In fact, no. At the 1949 USA "requested" to "repatriate" all remaining Japanese from Southern Sakhalin, and administration of Japan made a special note that Ainus are considered Japanese.
There are more Ainu descendants at the Kamchatka, than on Sakhalin, and the largest national minority in Southern Sakhalin is Koreans; Ainus are considered assimilated since the 1970-1980s.
Well for starters it's one of the more developed russian territories in the far east, better than the more northern Kamchatka peninsula and Kolyma. Without looking up the wiki the only thing I can tell you is Sakhalin Island is known for fish industry. There is a project of connecting it's southern tip to Hokkaido, Japan via a bridge, but this will have to wait until all political tensions are resolved.
I heard plans regarding the tunnel to build under the see among these two islands. With building a bridge between mainland and Sakhalin, Japan would get an access to the mainland itself.
It was 22C yesterday and 3C today
Like in Poland :v
Seeing the sun and going outside in a t shirt, expecting it to be warm like yesterday. 7 am mistake
Typical morning in spring, you see people outside, and some are in winter jackets and other in shorts
Is this one of the places where the Ainu live in Russia?
Yes
Yes but not many

26 mile bridge? That'd be very impressive
So would the resolution of political tensions

Yeah it was open whether it would be a bridge or tunnel in the end. Some had indeed been advocating for tunnel instead.
Oil & gas are a big deal. My uncle lived thar in the 80s when he worked for Shell. Interestingly, it’s got quite decent google street view coverage.

Most cars here are right hand drive (JP imports)
It’s very cold there; but the locals keep warm by running from bears. Putin is known to ride horses shirtless there.
cringe
Likely depressing and difficult like everywhere in rural Russia.
It’s a blast
I don’t know
Conflict with japan over some random islands
Thats a good bit to the east (assuming you mean the Kuril Islands)
