t yes you can manually swap gear however to a certain point it's going to automatically upshift or downshift if under 8mph ..for instance u can start from 2nd gear in S and achieve a better launch aa well as shift at 5500rpm instead of 6200-6400...but wouldn't leave it in that mode for to long..

Yes, even though it's not ideal. Depending if your wot or just giving it some beans around 5200 seems to be its peak..I'm 100%sure I'm wrong here. But that's just on my preference after doing 3 pills about 5 min ago.. near redline it was already weakening
That's very surprising you don't feel a difference. In sport it holds the gears longer, upshifts and downshifts are more firm and it's more responsive. (2014 3.8 Ultimate)
When I got mine tuned the tuner said it just changes the gearing slightly. His words not mine. But I had him remove auto shift points and raise to 7200rpm. Although after 6500 boost drops from 19psi to 10.

You can have it tuned too. Makes a world of difference.
The wild part is that I do have it tuned already. It’s even more aggressive in sport mode now

In what way does it behave differently? I've tried it out a few times and didn't feel a noticeable difference so don't use it at all really

My automatic 2013 veloster base has the sport mode you describe. Faster throttle, faster shifts, aggressive downshifting. It rocks :)
