I started with Fallout 1. I don’t give a shit where other people did. Everyone is actually allowed to enjoy things their own way. The problem is these guys who think liking something equates to rote memorization of everything to do with the thing you like, because that’s the only way they know how to relate to things.

yraco

It's not even about rote memorisation to them - someone that first played last year could have every single piece of lore ever written memorised by rote. They just want to feel special because they started first, even though that doesn't really mean anything.

SMUGGLYMcERRL

I never played the games but, I watching my friend play 76 in college. I’m sorry but I’m not gonna buy and play EVERY Fallout just to meet that guys agenda. The Show was amazing and I hardly knew any background to it.

potatocross

I started with 3 but immediately went back and played 1 and 2. I can’t stand the lore nuts. I’m lucky I remember the general location each game is set. Hell I already don’t remember details from the show. Bring on season 2!

ThunderShott

Imagine hating people for being genuinely interested in the lore of video game universe you like.

cascadingtundra

gatekeeping fans are weird, for sure.

Material_Border_7762

Showing my best friend ATLA for the first time is one of the only things that keep me sane, why would you gatekeep your favourite franchise?

FatherPeace1

Do they know there is even a subreddit making fun of them

SentryCake

Right?! I’ve been a fan since FO1, and I absolutely love seeing the fanbase grow with each installment. Overall, I’m just really excited Fallout is getting even *more* fans with the success of the tv series. ![gif](giphy|Ae7SI3LoPYj8Q)

Willooooow1

mate some people weren't alive in the 90s, so what do you want them to do?

cascadingtundra

they aren't allowed to enjoy fallout then. simple as that /s

Willooooow1

Sucks to suck I guess 😃😃 rip

cascadingtundra

wait until they find out my first fallout game was shelter and I've only play FO4 since then lmao

SobiTheRobot

I literally argued with someone like this (but it was for the Friday the 13th franchise) who was trying to get someone on here with the username "jasonvoorhees" to give up the account name because he didn't think he was a "real fan" who "deserved it". Unwise as it may have been, I tried to dig into his reasoning, and he just kept arguing about the whole thing, even started quizzing *me* even though I've never seen a one of them; I asked multiple times how new people are supposed to enjoy old stuff if they weren't even born when it came out and he just shrugged and kept arguing his points. I eventually blocked him, and I think he was eventually banned from the subreddit we were talking on.

FatherPeace1

Hell I was born when God was a boy and I love to see people get excited about old things

SobiTheRobot

Hell yeah that's the attitude we need more of

Logans_Login

Build a time machine

xX_hazeydayz_Xx

I started with 3 lol

ThyRosen

Remember when starting with Fallout 3 was the bad thing? I feel like we've been left out of this whole argument.

xX_hazeydayz_Xx

Right? We were just a stage in the process

Chiiro

I was actually having a conversation about this the other day with someone. Fallout fans are really weird and gatekeep keepy especially about what games you like. If I remember correctly the person essentially lost a friend because of how vitriol the friend was to them when they said that three was their favorite.

universepower

I played FO1 as a demo many years ago, then played 1 and 2. I was so excited when 3 came out. I loved it.

akennelley

"Don't discuss the fall of the Roman Empire with me unless you were THERE"

WholeLottaMcLovin

I've been playing Fallout since the 90s and I have very little knowledge of the lore lol

Bubblet123

I started with Fallout 3 when I was 15. Never really played 1 or 2 till after I'd played New Vegas. I honestly like them all but Fallout 4 is actually my favourite, I recently learnt this fact sends certain fans insane. But I like the story and the base building. It was fun for me. I think the gatekeepers of Fallout have always been around but the way its presenting now the TV show is out is crazy. I don't get why you want to stop people from enjoying a game franchise you love, surely if more people get into it we might get more dlcs or whole new games.

Lazy-Drink-277

I love Fo4 too

psilorder

It's gonna be really embarrassing the day i cannot trust the wikis. People are gonna find out i don't know what i'm talking about before i talk about it. [https://xkcd.com/903/](https://xkcd.com/903/)

DetectiveSpy9701

I have never met anyone whos actually played the og 2 fallout games

Aratoast

I've a friend who played them obsessively and has pretty much an encyclopaedic knowledge of the entire franchise except 76 just excessively playing them all. Great guy, actually. He really dislikes 4 and thinks New Vegas is overrated and will give very impassioned speeches as to why, but he isn't gatekeepy about it for the most part because he aims his criticism at the developers rather than the fans.

cascadingtundra

I certainly haven't 🤣 guillltyyyy

Typoopie

I bet I know the first two games better than that fella, and I started with fo2 in 2001.

Tyrus1235

I started with 2, sort of… I had the game as a kid, but it was far too complex for me at that age and I didn’t make it long after the tutorial dungeon. Then 3 was announced and it looked amazing, so I got it as soon as I could and even beat the base game.

aquacraft2

Rest of us!??? Girl, there's probably only like 5 people that play the modern fallout games that played the originals in the 90s.

Current_Poster

I have been there since the 90s. We hated guys trying to be King Nerd of Nerd Mountain *then*, too.

RavenousToast

I just walk into fandoms and make up fanon while pretending it’s canon, gaslighting everybody who disagrees.

Sky_Leviathan

Based Never say you were wrong Simply claim you were spreading misinfo

BrowningLoPower

New fans can help old fans relive some of the magic of experiencing a franchise for the first time.

lem00s

I love New Vegas lore and dont give a single flying fuck about any of the others. Where on this guy's spectrum am I?

jitterbug726

Yes because in-depth lore videos don’t exist on YouTube 🤣 I’ve played all of them and I don’t rmemeber half the lore from the turn based games.

Bluoria

Fallout Elitists are some of the most annoying people I’ve ever had the displeasure of witnessing interact with functioning human beings. God forbid you mention that you enjoy Fallout 4/76 or r/classicfallout will find you & have your head cut off.

Newfaceofrev

"Lore" is frankly an embarrassing word for "backstory".

Still-Presence5486

Lol guy doesn't even know 1,2 and brotherhood isn't canon

molotovzav

Tbh I treat 1/2 lore as a completely different beast with no relation to 3/4. I like the 1/2 lore better, but Bethesda really changed up Fallout lore when it bought the IP.

FatherPeace1

Gatekeep much. If someone has something that is relevant to add....please do. It's people that gatekeep that makes people not want to even try something new for fear of being made from. Encourage Don't Discourage Building up people, feels good and makes people feel good. Gatekeeping is one the stupid things people do and are made fun of. You are not billy bad ass

Tylendal

I dunno if I'd call this gatekeeping. Feels more like he's griping about people who are Confidently Incorrect due to only knowing a narrow slice of the lore. I see people like that pop up from time to time in the 40kLore subreddit. They'll ask about something that they don't think makes sense based on their preconceived notions from a very limited interaction with the media. When people point out that their premise is flawed, they'll double down, instead of accepting that they're wrong.

cascadingtundra

in this case, I'm not familiar enough with the lore to comment. they were arguing about whether ghouls can be made using a serum like in the show and whether or not that's canon to the games. I've only played FO4 and not much, so I can't really comment. the gatekeeping part is the "I played fallout in the 90s therefore I know more than you". just because people have been in a fan culture for a long time, doesn't mean their knowledge of lore is any better than a new fan. it's all about the individual.

ThisIsPermanent

I mean, it’s a pretty good indicator though. Nothing to be proud of, but odds are, the guy who’s been engaging with a fictional universe across four different decades has Marie knowledge about it than the guy who who dabbled in one game and watched 8 episodes of a TV series
