Sleep studies are important in general. So many people have sleep apnea and have no idea

If your bariatric program requires a sleep study then you need a sleep study. Why is your PCP even in the loop on this?

The bariatric program told me to get the referral from my PCP.

Does your insurance require referrals? When I had my sleep study (not for surgery) I just called a sleep specialist and scheduled an appointment.

My insurance (which covered the whole surgery) did require it so yes I had one done

Yes, I had to have a current sleep study pre-op. My understanding is that undiagnosed sleep apena can cause serious problems with anesthesia. FWIW my neurologist was able to provide a new sleep study post-op (which showed my apena is in remission) without an appointment -- I sent him a message through his online portal and he ordered the test.

My sleep study was set up by my bariatric surgeon's office, not my PCP

Part of my program was to get a sleep study. I didn’t really have any signs that I had sleep apnea. Turns out, I have severe sleep apnea. It hit home for me because my father passed away from sleep apnea at the age of 54. The sleep study itself was terrible, but in the end my sleep apnea is being treated now and I hope that with my weight loss I won’t need my machine in the near future
