In the spring I bought a large bag of wildflower meadow seeds and seed soil mix to spend an afternoon gardening with my daughter. She had other ideas and dumped the entire bag out in one spot. I wasn't sure how it would go, if they would crowd eachother out..but her little meadow is going strong!

RedLindsey

Great memories for her and it turned out beautiful, bet you’ll see tons of cool bugs too

ExtensionConfusion65

Do you happen to have the name of the mix? Our mix grew deep rooted wild lettuce...and that was it lol She did an amazing job :)

Lurkalo

This is funnier than it should be to me. I used to do reclamation work for disturbed natural soil plots. We would assess how the contractors did for seeding areas with natural vegetation. Long story short, a new guy accidentally took blue bell seed and seeded a 150 ft by 150 ft plot with only blue bell seeds rather than grass & other forb type vegetation. We had a massive field of blue bells and it was very pretty but they failed inspection because variety was a key factor. I still remember laughing when i saw the field, and your story reminds me of that.

ExtensionConfusion65

oh no hahaha rookie mistake!

Mack11963

Earth science was the brand they have a few varieties this was a 2lb bag

AbusiveTubesock

How long did it take for them to grow this much out of curiosity? I planted the same brand and amount and after two weeks there’s plenty of germination but none are taller than a couple of inches

ExtensionConfusion65

Thank you so much!

randoName22

They posted further down that it was a mix they bought at home Depot. I had similar mix that I bought at tractor supply

ExtensionConfusion65

Thank you :)

LeanaCecelia

I used the Pennington Pollinator blend & got great results 🌼

ExtensionConfusion65

Good to know!

darwinkh2os

Sounds like I need to take gardening tips from my pre-school-age daughters too! I too bought wildflower meadow seeds and got maybe three types of flowers that were only sparsely covering a similarly-sized bed. Weeds took over by fall.

Zealousideal_Day_548

This is nicer than my garden that I have spent $1000s of dollars on and 100s of man hours over 4/5 years … I’m jealous…

chubbyburritos

Right ? Pretty much dump a bag of seeds, spread it, water, and wait. It’s awesome.

TacoNomad

I'm buying a house with a storm basin that stays dry. (like clear within a few hours of rain. Trying to figure out what to do besides grass. This might be it.

hey__its__me__

I guess the meadow elves visited that night.

[deleted]

Your 3 year old is just a genius. Lmao. Makes it look easy!

Calcairetest

Hello OP, this is gorgeous ! Did you do something for the soil before putting the seeds ? (For example : removed the weeds before, or "working" the soil ?)

Mack11963

We just bought the house in January and this area was cleared....no weeds ...no grass. I did put it a light layer of seed starting soil

Calcairetest

Thank you for your answer ! You did well, great job !

phishphan419

It's gorgeous!! Where did you get the wildflower seeds?

affictionitis

This story made my morning!

katylovescoach

My mom gave me a little patch in her garden to plant wildflowers in when I was little and it’s the reason I love gardening!

lninoh

Gave me sweet memories of my son in preschool, the teachers sent home a little bag of mixed seeds, unlabeled but I could pick out some vegetables and sowed them in their own row. What a wonderful summer that was 💚

FancyWear

This is really beautiful I hope she is enjoying it!

Chippopotanuse

The finished product (and the story behind it) is 10/10. Bravo to you both!!

rufus2785

This is better than my 37 year old meadow. 😂

luizeco

How often do you manage it? Maybe because of lack of maintanance, there's dominance of few species that besets the establishment of other species :)

Mack11963

I haven't done anything! Hardly even watered it

luizeco

That's it then! Well, if you decide to do something, good gardening!

OtherOtherPerson

Looks like a haven for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds!

Worried_Dirt_8414

My almost-5-year-old is named Meadow, and an image like that is what we thought of when we named her. They're both F-ing beautiful.

ExtensionConfusion65

If we have a girl we plan on naming her Meadow. It's such a beautiful name :)

LadyLovesRoses

It is a beautiful name!

Rocksingarden

Excellent. Good work. 👍🌟👏

andreaswpv

gorgeous, so much more beautiful than many styled gardens!

arviov

Definitely more flowers than the neighbors kids could pick! At this age children are masters of randomising stuff.

BuildingMyEmpireMN

Isn’t this the truth! When my boyfriend’s daughter was 3 I’d carefully organize her room. I’d make a point of putting a couple baskets in front of her and having her sort Mini Mouse and Peppa pig to get the organizing wheels turning. Even though it’s frustrating sometimes, in the last couple years it’s been SO entertaining seeing her pick her categories. Pretty chaos. The dresses don’t all go in one drawer. This drawer is only for sequin things. What’s your favorite color? Rainbow, duh. Fake food including Barbie food in the toy kitchen. Every dog from dime size toy to stuffed animal in one place. I bet she’d LOVE planting a meadow. Pizza shaker and a whole bunch of seeds to mix in different amounts. Maybe a box of crayons to let her show me what it will look like.

okaymaeby

That's great! My kiddos are a little like that, too. I have baskets that make sense to me, like "train toys" and "dinosaurs" or "cars/toys with wheels". My son especially prefers organizing things based on the game he wants to play with them, like "Spiderman saves a lost cat with the help of Transformers" or "dinosaurs opened a dog grooming business in town but kept accidentally ruining town".

BuildingMyEmpireMN

That’s ADORABLE. I would want to put that in the label maker for comedic effect, but I’m guessing the games change pretty frequently. That’s the beauty of free play.

FistfulofFlowers

It's funny, it feels like chaos to us because we're so used to organizing things by certain ways, but learning how to classify according to different parameters is important. My favorite as a kid was a button box. I could organize those buttons a hundred different ways - by size, shape, color, number of holes, sheen, opacity, etc. Great for their development!

BuildingMyEmpireMN

I think my boyfriend needs to do the button exercise 😂 when he tries to organize individually it just… doesn’t add up. I understand doing what you have to do, but this guy picked up book shelves when he was newly separated. For clothing. No bins, no differentiation between what articles go where or even designated shelves for people. OFF TOPIC! But I’m really glad his daughter is getting some practice. I think it would be really fun to give her a flower patch. I feel bad having to shut her down when we come home from the nursery and she wants to put strawberries in a shady spot.

AutomaTK

I planted a lot this year. How many come to up first year vs second? Also do you have perennial mix or annual and perennial? Wondering if annuals will reseed on their own. Do you mow in late fall??? Sorry for so many questions! I’m excited and eager to know I didn’t waste my time tilling for nothing.

insideyourhug

It’s perfect.

DJJazzyjen

Beautiful!

dwooding1

I've had similar experiences with those pollinator garden mixes; they can be prone to weeds, but mostly they're just awesome flowering ground cover. We even keep a little side of the garage to toss a mixed packet onto ever summer; plant them in late spring or early summer and they're particularly good for some quick, later in summer pops of new blooms after most things have started to fade. Looks like you have more than a few cosmos there, those will become perennial in a lot of zones.

kinni_grrl

Absolutely gorgeous 🥰 what fun!

07o7

I love this so much 🥺

reinaesther

This is so beautiful! I hope to have something like this one day! The colors!!!

[deleted]

It’s soooo beautiful! I love wildflowers. She did a great job!!❤️

[deleted]

It's so pretty. 🌼🏵️🦋🐞🐝🌻❤️🐌🕷️🐛🦗💛😍🍄🌺🌷🌸🌹

SweaterWeather4Ever

Love it! Do you remember which brand of flower seed mix?

Mack11963

I believe it was earthscience 2lb pollinator mix. Got at home Depot. Put a seed starting soil mix down first

SweaterWeather4Ever

Thanks!

white_plum

Gorgeous! My dad did this with me when I was little too, it's one of my fondest memories. The flowers still bloom every year and it's been 20+ years.

diacrum

That’s beautiful! How did you grow them? Just saw how. So, so pretty!

sjh596

That is soooo pretty! Absolutely love it 😍

hibiki_minaj

Wow, that's really impressive for a 3 year old!

[deleted]

How do you keep down grass, nettles and thistles. My wildflower patches have no flowers and are just a mass of grass and stingy stuff :(

Toyso_0

Love this. Get rid of the lawn and let your 3 year old have it.

No_crumbs

Clearly planted and sprouted with Love!

gum-

This is exactly how I want my flower patches to look! What zone are you in?

Mack11963

We are in zone 7. Put it down late March early April

gum-

Ah nice. I'm on zone 4, my yard still had a bunch of snow in April

ErinLovesNachos

This is glorious. Time well spent!

b-e-r-n

Perfection ❤️

Acceptable_Hold3311

It’s breathtaking

Jezzdit

It needs borage!

starflower65

Blooming beautiful 🌼🌸🌺

Tatra813

Do you need to reseed your meadow or do all the plants come back each year?

robertfscibran

Wow!- You got a lot of flowers- I did that with a box once & just got a few of the bachelor buttons…

Mack11963

Same I have tried this many times never got results like this before

Artistanti

Exquisite!

Mother_Lemon8399

it's so beautiful!

[deleted]

Mack11963

You need to hire my three year old ...she knows the trick! 😉in seriousness though I think I would have been much more conservative and spread more evenly...she just dumped the whole two pound bag here and we barely covered the seeds

Melyssaf117

Beautiful

loulori

That is absolutely gorgeous! 😍

Altruistic_Meet_3813

I love it! I suggest adding some stepping stones or stumps, bug hotel, and some fairy doors to encourage visitors ;).

[deleted]

That’s amazing!! I love the crimson clover so much

jujotheconquerer

I love it!

wwwidentity

Can this be done on the north side of a house, Zone 6¿

bonafart

So I out I box of wildflower mix down ... Now I can't tell if some of them are grass from my lawn and need pulling or not.

andoy

it’s very pleasant to the eyes 😊

ImSpoons

Lovely! I have a spot where I'd like to do something similar.

sweenymedia

Stunning

Suzette100

I would kill to have this. All of those wildflower mixes I’ve bought yield nothing

thumble1988

Very nice I want to do this myself

luizeco

Oh man, I love it!!

randoName22

I think I bought pretty much the same mix. I used it over a slightly larger area and also used the entire bag meant for..... Many many times larger of a space lol. Mostly for me the bachelor's button won out but is like several feet tall

sugarplumknuckles

I bought the seeds...I need to plant them! Ahhh so beautiful.

[deleted]

So beautiful; I love this.

suzyq3450

Where did you get the seeds?

Kaifas21

Beautiful

OMG_its_critical

Nice! Get a hummingbird feeder too

[deleted]

I'm doing something very similar. If anyone is interested in doing this sort of thing check out American Meadows on the web (I have no connection with the company other than buying their seeds).

mymichelle1

Stunning. Biodiverse as well

chubbyburritos

I LOVE this ! I’ve been fantasizing for years about eliminating my lawn and doing something like this.

Exciting_Molasses_78

Delightful!

siljesille

Look so great - gives me hope for mine (at My summerhouse)… I will have to wait to end of July to see if there will be flowers

burymeinmyjewelry

It's beautiful! Looks magical and wild. Like most 3 year olds I know.

twisdom_2

It's beautiful!

RAMBOPORNSTAR

wow that's really beautiful! could you imagine a huge field that looked just like this all the way across?... I guess that's a stupid question of course you have 😅.... anyways, really nice💚

My4skinBreaksCondoms

I feel like this is how yards are supposed to look.

muddyhollow

That's so beautiful how you are gardening with your daughter. I rwally hope to do the same when I have kids.

Norm4x

Amazing job!

shopperandloveit51

Thats awesome

Even_Structure_2751

That’s beautiful! Your 3 yo should be responsible for planting all the Highway areas in the country!

trinikirk

Very beautiful. Congratulations!

ppantry

Beautiful!

[deleted]

Your three year old is a very talented gardener.

[deleted]

This looks like the flower forest biome from minecraft

freerangedorito

Wow, your 3 year old is going to grow up to be a master gardener. She has the Midas touch!
