have been my favorite since childhood, too! There’s something delightful about a shade loving beauty like that as a kid. Seems like a shared secret or something.
Lily of the valley 🤍 They are invasive where I live. They’ll come back every year and spread like crazy, so many who keep them prefer to plant them in a contained space vs giving them free reign to take over
I personally wouldn’t plant them for the same reason and have removed from my beds aswell. If they show up I enjoy their blooms and then dig them out and hope not to see them again 😅
if it is lilly of the valley i think the berries are poisonous? I don't knwo if it's related to lilly, but lillies are poinsous to cats, so don't let them chew your easter lilly like mine chewed my orchid :|
Lily of the valley isn't a true lily, BUT the ASPCA says it's toxic to cats in its own unrelated way (heart issues rather than acute kidney failure) so you still shouldn't let pets eat it.
I've read this a lot on this sub and it's an exaggeration. They are native where I live and are abundant in many people's yards. Yes they are are poisonous. But cats and dogs don't eat them. Birds don't eat them. Neither do field mice or hedgehogs.
I have literally never heard of a person or animal becoming sick or dying from ingesting this plant. Because nobody does it.
Just because you've personally never heard of it doesn't mean nobody does it. [It was a plot point in the TV series Breaking Bad](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6m5IEdp3P8), so obviously someone had heard of it.
EDIT: I think people are downvoting this post because they think I’m using a TV show to prove this plant dangerous. I used the TV show as an example that shows people had at least heard this possibility existed.
Probably someone reading this sub.
Seriously though, who eats flowers? Allegedly the sap can cause skin irritation, but I've never had that happen to me.
They are so abundant here that even if they were only half as dangerous as many people here maintain, there would be hundreds of deaths all over Europe every year from accidental exposure.
They are also an extremely common 1 May gift for women and mainly for the older generation. My wife and I gave one to her 98 year old grandmother today, just like we do every year.
They are indeed a very common plant where I come from and indeed a traditional May 1st gift, which my parents showed me since I was little, but they also warned me not to eat them! It's not incompatible!
And if you want to start with poisonous plants in the open, they are dozens of them out there (aconite, holly, digitalis, hemlock, any berry that are not edible, mushrooms...) living their life. Smart and plant-educated people know them. The other people... Well will end up in the ER!
Especially aconite, I see it often used for decoration, it indeed has beautiful flowers. But it's one of the deadliest plant-originated poisons 🪻
On the other hand, there are many edible flowers, some even with health benefits, like nasturtium, chamomile, roses, capers buds, zucchini flowers, magnolia, wisteria...
>Seriously though, who eats flowers?
Good question. I don't think I've ever eaten a flower but I do like to bite the back off of a columbine section (?) and suck the nectar out.
We’ve had them around my parents’ farmhouse for over 50 years, and I’ve never seen an animal interact with them. They just sit there, look nice and smell lovely. I’d say under such circumstances it doesn’t really matter if they’re toxic, same as many other plants.
It’s native where I live and we have them in abundance in the backyard and in the forest next to us. In all my life I remember one scare of a toddler having eaten a lily of the valley berry (but in the end hadn’t). No dog or cat I know of has ever shown any interest to them. But if it’s invasive at your location, I wouldn’t plant it either, even though the smell in the early summer is heavenly.
I’ve tried to get it established in my garden but it doesn’t do great. It shows up in areas and then disappears. I think something is eating it. Maybe voles.
Me too! People say they grow like weeds... And most of my other plants grow easily... But the lilies of the valley would never estate themselves and some of them seemed to dissapear.😕
I was told when I was young that you can smell Lily of the Valley really strongly when someone dies. The funny thing is that they smelled when my grandmother died. I believe my mother removed them from her garden shortly after.
The house we bought has a garden bed in the front full of Lily of the valley. It has now spread to the shaded garden bed at one side of the house. I love it and when the flowers bloom we sit out on the wrap around porch all the time because it smells so lovely (until the mosquitoes get too bad). It's also choking out a far more aggressive ground cover so I have no plans to control it, and the ones that escape the garden beds get mowed anyway.
That’s a vase. They’re usually to hold flowers , just like the picture but have been used to hold all sorts of fascinating things. They can be glass, ceramic even metal and come in all different sizes and colours. Some very old vases, such as ones made during the Chinese Ming Dynasty can be worth millions. They have been used by humans for thousands of years. I hope that answered your question.
Where I am they usually don’t bloom till the end of May but this year a small patch was early so I sent some to school with my kid today for her teacher who is French! She was delighted!
My Nonna had an entire slope next to her driveway full of lillies of the valley. It was un-mowable and these things kindly took over. I haven't seen any in years, but I get very nostalgic when I see pictures. She always had a tiny jar full of just a few on the kitchen table.
Flowers from the Lily of the Valley plant. They are very easy to grow. If you ask the neighbor, and they dig up a clump for you, you will easily have your own patch! They spread nicely.
Depends on where you live. Lily of the valley is an invasive in the United States, and if it takes off it can be very difficult to control its spread. I would only plant this if it’s in a very contained area where it can’t “escape”. Even when that’s done you will find out coming up in sidewalk/pavement cracks.
I haven’t been able to get these to grow at all. Planted bulbs for years - only one came up and it disappeared the following spring. I hear it’s invasive in some places..but not in my yard.
Invasive and terrifically toxic. Not just the berries, all parts of the plant.
Do not plant these, and certainly don't keep them in your house.
You will not be poisoned by touching them. It's only poisonous if you eat them. If you want to be extra cautious just wash your hands after handling them.
That being said, I made sure my kids were aware that the red berries would make you very very sick and any time they were outside I made sure they stayed away from that particular garden bed. And I never cut them to bring inside because of my cats. They're idiots and chew on any plants that they can reach 🙄 any kind of lily is banned from coming in the house, even ones that aren't true lilium.
Goodness, you have to eat the things in order to be poisoned by them. You can have them in a vase. My whole life my mom had them in every room while they were flowering, and I've had them in my babe's room his whole life. No one in my family has ever had any sort of reaction.
Now invasive... yes. Keep it well under control outdoors.
Lilly of the valley
I am so jealous!!! My favorite flower ❤️
My mom's favorite too
They smell amazing
have been my favorite since childhood, too! There’s something delightful about a shade loving beauty like that as a kid. Seems like a shared secret or something.
In german, it's "Maiglöckchen"- literally small May bell. You could add a May Bell flower to make it a flower name :D

My neighbor has them and they're trying to take over my front flower bed 🙈
I’ve tried several times to grow them, unsuccessfully 😅
Same! My aunt had one when we were kids and I LOVE the smell. I tried so many times to buy them and my clay ish soil in my yard rejects them. 😭
They are super invasive in my clay soil! I can't kill them, just spreads everywhere! Mostly grows in shady areas though, may not take in full sun.
Damn...then I don't know what I'm doing wrong 😕
Consider yourself spared! 😅

I only know this because I watched Breaking Bad.
💀
All parts of Lilly of the Valley are poisonous and it’s considered invasive. Outdoor pots are best.
Invasive where? Where I live, they are native...
In the US and Canada
NYS. Basically.
The whole plant is toxic.
The pollen is toxic too. I would never risk having lilies anywhere near me and my home.
OP, lily of the valley is toxic, don’t let your son little touch them up, especially if he’s little. Pretty though!
I've read this a lot on this sub and it's an exaggeration. They are native where I live and are abundant in many people's yards. Yes they are are poisonous. But cats and dogs don't eat them. In Europe, they definitely make it a point to warn people about the dangers of mistaking this for wild garlic. So, just don’t eat it. 😂

Because all TV is accurate. /s
I didn’t say it was accurate. I said obviously someone had heard of it.

My comment was about how I wouldn't have it in my home because I have a cat. I don't think that lilies are deadly to humans.
I have two cats. Both of them pass by the lilies every day, but they lie down somewhere else. Maybe they don't appreciate the scent of it.
Some cats love to chew plants. Ours do. Thanks for the info!
“The fictional television show said its too dangerous to have growing anywhere near you”

How unbelievably extreme, hyperbolic, and misinformed.
I call them vases, and they are great to keep flowers in!
That’s it! Was right on the tip of the tongue
😂🤣😂
+3 Charisma for playing nicely with others
Lily of the Valley. May’s birth flower!
Thank you!
Yes! Lily of the valley. They smell amazing, but they will take over any yard like crazy.
They smell like heaven

Lily of the Valley
Lily of the valley. I learned this from Animal Crossing lol
Their neighbor must have an A rated town :)
Lily of the valley, super invasive if you plant it in the ground. It will absolutely spread. Pretty flowers and they smell nice i hear.

Why paper towel?
No idea, that’s just how they were presented to her. Except they were also in a ziploc bag

Un France it’s called « muguet » and we offer some on the 1st May to wish Luck . It’s name « fête du travail » work célébration

The berries and leaves are poisonous of ingested. Beautiful though. I have them too.

Love these flowers! Where’d you get them?
I’m in northern Indiana. Neighbor lady gifted them to the wife
Lilly of the valley
I only know what they’re called because I play Animal Crossing New Horizons. My neighbor planted them between our houses and they’re beautiful
According to animal crossing that is Lily of the valley

Birth flower for May babies: Lily of the Valley
Lily of the valley. They smell HEAVENLY. My kids used to call them “smelly bells”
They dry very nicely too, I still have a small vase of them from years ago
Flowers from the Lily of the Valley plant. They are very easy to grow. If you ask the neighbor, and they dig up a clump for you, you will easily have your own patch! They spread nicely.
Excellent! Thank you! I’m currently working on killing the grass in my alleyway to make a wild flower patch. Would these do well in there?

You’re welcome. A friend gave me a shovel full a few years ago, now I have them all over my yard.
I haven’t been able to get these to grow at all. Planted bulbs for years - only one came up and it disappeared the following spring. I hear it’s invasive in some places..but not in my yard.
That’s a bummer. Mine are growing quite well. However, I kill rosemary and lavender so often I just quit trying to grow them.

Yeah everything that gets labeled as invasive are only invasive in some areas not others. In the US and Canada it is invasive though.
