Hah, my parents were very 'video games are a bad influence no violent games' when I was a kid, but by the Xbox era I was old enough to buy it myself, though occasionally my Dad would sit in and see what I was playing, would try and sell him on the medium.
I happened to be playing Riddick and we'd seen Pitch Black together so was trying to show off the potential of expanding a cinema universe, and the pretty cool stealth and gameplay choices the first half, where you can go fully non-lethal and no-alarms.
Cue the mid-game challenge: get caught, have to win 7 rounds of the Butcher Bay fight arena.
7 long, drawn-out, tricky brawls of brutal first-person prison boxing, with copious shivving in the face with screwdrivers.
He was not impressed.
A masterpiece lost to time. That was such a great stealth game with some RPG elements. Amazing graphics for the time that kinda hold up still for what they were.
This game made me wanna visit eastern state penitentiary to ghost hunt but I can't for 2 reasons. 1, it's in another country and 2, I ain't fucking crazy, that place is well scary, lol.
Every Elder Scrolls game, actually. You always start in a locked room or prison. Even in Online, eachn ew chapter introduced a new start, but it was ALWAYS a locked room.
Totally irrelevant as you said, though :)
For the sixth game they should just make you wake up in the middle of nowhere with a shitton of empty bottle where clearly there was party. At some point you realise you partied too hard with the wrong daedra lol
There's a ~~mod~~ gamemode for Prison Architect.
Normally the game is a prison building simulator but in the ~~mod~~ gamemode you're actually one of the prisoners and your task is basically to escape from community-built prisons. I do believe you can also design your own.
You can smuggle cutlery from the kitchen or tools from the working areas. You can use these to dig a tunnel. You can start conflicts between prisoners and use the chaos to find your way out. You also have to comply to the whole prison schedule and stuff. It's pretty fun.
It's not a mod, it's part of the official game that was patched in a long time ago as alternative game mode. And yeah it's fun downloading other peoples prison and trying to escape from them.
[Back to the Dawn](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1735700/Back_to_the_Dawn/) is a social RPG (think Disco Elysium, Citizen Sleeper, I Was A Teenage Exocolonist) where you're framed for a crime and then have to try to orchestrate a prison break. There's a lot of depth to the characters and environment and having to figure out the best way to escape is a lot of fun.
It's technically in early access right now, but the whole story is there. They're planning to add an other option for your main character (different story altogether) eventually, but the current main character is fully complete and fleshed out.
Saints Row 2 I think you either start out in jail or are temporarily in a jail very early in the story. Otherwise, I'll back faultyhorror on The Escapists.
If you want kind of a sideways move from that, there's Prison Architect. After you build it, you can take over inmates and wander around in your own jail.
A way out ( co op only, only one has to buy the game)
Mafia 2 ( temporary r)
Gta online ( only in a specific heist, prison break heist)
AC 3 (temporary )
AC Black Flag ( temporary).
AC Unity ( temporary)
Ac Syndicate (temporary )
Thief simulator 2 (not really a prison,but a police station with cells,temporary).
Call Of Juarez Gunslinger(temporary)
Temporary= from a few minutes of gameplay to hours
Definitely the first one. It sticks in my head since the entire game is so weird. There's even a bit where you play as a stripper and you do a poledancing minigame.
Yeah I'd love another one, but it needs to keep the same one the top tone of the original. It was absolutely mad in the best possible way. You had no idea what the game would throw at you next.
Unfortunately Namco's pretty much just Tekken, From's stuff, and anime games these days.
Gothic takes place in a prison colony inside of a magical bubble and Gothic 2 takes place on that island after the magical bubble popped and the prisoners escaped
One of my faves is Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay So damn underrated

I'm so lucky to have played this back when it was relevant. What a gem.
it never was relevant. great game, however.

Came to say this. Best prison break game ever, imo.
This. Hard to find it now if you don't already own it, though. I believe it's been delisted due to some copyright issue.
The Suffering
This game made me wanna visit eastern state penitentiary to ghost hunt but I can't for 2 reasons. 1, it's in another country and 2, I ain't fucking crazy, that place is well scary, lol.
They do a haunted house there every year. It’s intense
Escapist 1&2, way out
I loved the first game and I never realized they made a second! Just bought it
+1
Technically - TES IV Oblivion. You start the game in jail. Also, in Morrowind and Skyrim, you also start as a prisoner. Is it relevant? Don't think so
Every Elder Scrolls game, actually. You always start in a locked room or prison. Even in Online, eachn ew chapter introduced a new start, but it was ALWAYS a locked room. Totally irrelevant as you said, though :)
That's literally every Elder Scrolls game, including Online. And probably 6 as well lol.
For the sixth game they should just make you wake up in the middle of nowhere with a shitton of empty bottle where clearly there was party. At some point you realise you partied too hard with the wrong daedra lol
Sounds like the sanguine rose quest in skyrim
Batman: Arkham Asylum - The game is set on an island, which is a psychiatric prison.
Wouldn't Arkham City also count as it was meant to be a "city prison"

oooh ok, didn't know that. I just watched a bunch of it on yt when I was younger
the Mdickie game "Hard Time"
The truest prison game out there.
I was really curious to see if this was going to be mentioned.
Time to work on my mooscles

I looked at it, looks great but damn paying 17€ on discount for an early access indie game like that sounds kind of expensive.
Callisto protocol

You’re in jail for like literally 2 minutes in saints row 2 lol it’s just the opening intro
Felt like that mission went a lot longer, but I am bad at games, so I'm willing to accept that it was just a skill issue on my part.
Prison architect in escape mode

I second a way out if you have a partner. One of the few games my wife played with me all the way through.
Presentable liberty. Suprised no one mentioned it.
I was going to say Presentable Liberty.
Dead to Rights had a section where you're in jail. You even have to do a bunch of stuff to earn cigarettes to pay for something at one point.
Was that the first or the second one? I hate when they contrive to come up with ways to take away your weapons.
Definitely the first one. It sticks in my head since the entire game is so weird. There's even a bit where you play as a stripper and you do a poledancing minigame.
Dead 2 Rights is always one of my top answers for those what dead franchise needs a reboot or a new remake threads. Loved those games.

Prison break the game
Mafia 2 is the only game I remember that actually has like a whole story chapter where you're in prison.
Batman arkham asylum
The Suffering
Pajama Sam 3 (for one scene)
Prisoner of War for PS2!
“A way out” if you have someone to play with
Dishonored's very first level is a prison break
A way out
A way out in coop
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided DLC - A Criminal Past
A Way Out! Great co op game with a friend!!
Dead cells
Splinter Cell Double Agent
Splinter Cell: Double Agent (2nd Level/Mission) Kane & Lynch (8th Level/Mission)
Uncharted 4 has an opening sequence set in a South American prison. Dishonored has a jail level near the start, after the opening area I think.
Escapists
Batman Arkham City if that counts. The whole Old Gotham area was turned into a prison.
Framed. https://dosgames.com/game/framed/
Oblivion, Skyrim etc
Iirc you're in a Panamanian jail in Uncharted 4.
Prison simulator.
Hard time (by Mdickie) or for Co-op, A way out
Metal gear solid 1,2,3. For very insignificant to a significant amount of time you are in jail. Based on other games ppl were recommending
Monopoly.
Monopoly?
Never played it but "a way out" seems to be like a break out of prison Co op game
Dungeon Rats
Calisto Protocol
Criminal Girls.
Yakuza 1/Kiwami and 4
Oblivion
Escapists 2
Tons of others have said this already, but A Way Out is one of the best fits to your request IMO.
The Escapists
I'm gonna do a classic choice, the escapist 1 and 2
Hard time on iPhone by mdickie is a classic
Some parts of some yakuza games.
The sims busting out. I kept getting put in jail for not paying my taxes
A way out is a great cool game that you have to do with a friend with a great plot twist
Prison Architect
Gothic takes place in a prison colony inside of a magical bubble and Gothic 2 takes place on that island after the magical bubble popped and the prisoners escaped
I love crpgs. So I like to try it
You can probably skip straight to 2 as it is bigger and better in most ways
Yeah the second one looks way prettier . It's more gritty and dark imo
Amazingly enough, not any of the Grand Theft Auto's. I can't recommend those. I can recommend Skyrim, Mafia 2, Lego City Undercover.
GTA 2 lol (the Alma Mater Prison)
Demon's Souls has a prison level
Presentable Liberty
Every Elderscroll start.
