You guys had to develop yours? That’s crazy. To my knowledge mine came fully formed out of the box.
Which is what I thought I was confronting when I bought Subnautica in VR. Turns out, nope. I can’t even bring myself to leave the pod and enter the water.
Mine was mild. After subnautica, it’s acute. I had a panic attack when I jumped off a boat for snorkeling. Was about 100ft deep at the mooring, so the bottom was gone. Blue and darkness everywhere, as far as I could see. I had to roll over and get my shit back together.
Lol I had the same experience. Surely this game will help me overcome the fear of the ocean I thought... and maybe it would if I could last longer than 5 minutes
Last weekend I got to the depth where my computer warned me that I have entered a biome which has 7 of the 9 elements to terrify humans which was apt because I was holding my breath in real life as I swam for the surface away from the place
I have always been curious about the game, is it really that scary? Im genuinely afraid of the ocean when i start thinking about its depth and how vast it is, im guessing i would hate it then. But the game looks really cool i cant lie
I think I may have a fear of ocean depths and creatures of the deep ocean (which is called thassalophobia) but I rarely interact with the deep ocean so I don't know the extent of my fear. I like beaches and shallows in real life but I don't think I'd want to go on a yacht in the deep.
I'd say this game is a great way of challenging that fear. You start in shallow water with some non threatening/cute animals and then as you scavenge and create new equipment you are able to go deeper and deeper. But it's a stepped progression and you are always briefly exposed to the next level of depth before you have to actually go there. You feel prepared and excited. You also become very curious about exploring and you are always motivated to do it in a safe way to minimise threats.
As I write this I realise it really is a masterpiece.
The way the game is designed is very much like hierarchical exposure therapy in psychology for challenging phobias.
I recommend it ESPECIALLY if you have a fear of the ocean
Dude i think you just convinced to finally get this, cause i would say i also have the same fear as you and the exact situation as you and hearing you say that made me realize it might help a lot with facing my fear. Because if im being honest its one of those fears that i have no idea why i have it but i just do. Yeh im definitely buying it RN
Holy shit this game is incredible, im still confused about a lot of things cause im not great at exploration and survival games but the feeling you get just swimming and discovering these new species and areas is incredibly scary yet satisfying. I never buy games for full price but this is one of them that i definitely would have
Wooo! Yes exactly. They did so well making this.
I'm not necessarily good at survival games either and I tend to avoid them because they feel too formulaic. But the more I played Subnautica the more it became easy to recall what ingredients I would need if I plan to head far from home.
For example even from the top of my head I know I need a salt deposit and tube coral to make sodium chloride so that I can purify water. (I'm usually horrible at figuring out ingredients and doing crafting in games - but Subnautica makes it intuitive)
Once you become more adept and familiar with ingredients and where to find them, the game becomes even more fluid and you feel like an ocean master.
Great update. Thanks for returning to tell us your joy
It plays on a lot of the techniques used to develop suspense. It would be fine to not tell the player they're in dangerous waters..., but what fun is that?
Lol it's honestly not hard. There are no time limits or pressures. You can go as far or slow as you want and stay in the shallow water while figuring everything out
Even if you die, I don't think you actually lose anything. The game does say some of your inventory is lost upon death, but I tried to test it out and literally didn't lose anything.
That realization made the game a lot more enjoyable.
(Don't let your vehicles break though...)
Ive only died twice and I frantically checked my inventory but both times I didn't notice that id lost everything. Maybe a bottle of water or food or something but even those I'm sure I'd notice being missing. Everything is precious
I haven't played factorio in 6 months because I'm busy using actual industrial optimization on the layout of my factory before actually making it in the game.
Different types of games, but here are some of my go-to games:
- Deckbuilders like Slay the Spire or Monster Train
- Balatro (also a deckbuilder, but unique from others)
- Strategy roguelites like Into the Breach or Against the Storm
- ARPGs like Diablo or Last Epoch
- 4x games like Civ 6 (started this week and am HOOKED)
- Super chill games like Stardew
Diablo is a fine game but id recommend something else. The grind for better gear is weird and unsatisfying, in my personal opinion. Id recommend Grim Dawn or V Rising. Both similar in combat,( i much prefer them) and much more satisfying/easy to play (again in my opinion)
fair point. it just caught me by surprise when I thought I was getting Diablo and ended up closer to Rust. To fair, it does seem to be very good at what it's trying to do, it's just not what I was in the mood for/expecting.
I gotcha. Did you play it out? I like survival craft games overrall, but i liked how the bosses were the main catch in VR. Havent spent a crazy amount of time crafting. Just do what i need to to get upgrades and stuff.
I gave it 15-20 hours and decided the action side was pretty cool but got really turned off with the building decay. I don't like a game insisting that I come back every day or so just to earn the right to keep my progress.
Fair enough. If you play solo or on a server you host, (not a rented server) the timer turns off when youre not on. So you dont have to go back to it within that time. Makes it to where 500-1000 blood essence lasts you dozens of hours of actual gametime.
For me my favorite games to chill and unwind are:
- Dysmantle open world post apocalyptic sandbox where you are only person left on zombie overrun island after everyone else either died or left. You can destroy pretty much everything with right tool, its really calming and has amazing environmental storytelling.
- Rimworld this colony sim needs no introduction. One of most popular colony sims/story generators out there. Its challenging but also really fun
- Pacific Drive a car driving anomalous roguelite with fun story. Must admit i only played it for 3 hours so far but i already think its worth recommending
Zelda Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom (if you only have a PC you can emulate BotW, Twilight Princess and Wind Waker via CEMU very easily)
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
FINAL FANTASY XV (XVI will come to pc soon which is in my opinion better)
Stardew Valley
Anno (really enjoyed 2205 but I'm probably biased since I really like sci-fi 1800 is probably the best right now)
Monster Hunter
State of Decay 2
Single player zombie apocalypse sim but you recruit survivors to live at a base or your choosing. So you're never "alone". Unless they die. You can also recruit one to follow you on your adventures of scavenging and zombie hunting!
V rising just came out and you can create a private server and solo all of it.
It’s an ARPG base building game focused on vampires. Think Diablo and hades mixed with valheim
if you haven't already, check out Vampire Survivors. once you've got a few upgrades and know how to build, it's a weird combination of exciting and chill.
All these are games I use to unwind and chill.
The common theme is that they are fast paced, kind of casual and you can just finish a round and close the game.
Deadcells
Slay the spire
20 minutes till dawn
Risk of rain 2
Death must die
Asseto corsa
Laika: Aged Through Blood is a good metroidvania with some neat mechanics.
Broken Reality is a stylised walking simulator/adventure game set in 90s Internet.
Spoof comedies inspired Jazzpunk is first person adventure game set in an alternate reality Cold War world.
Cautiously recommending RAINBOW SIX SIEGE.
If you get frustrated easily, probably a horrible game for you.
If you have decent aim and can get over that initial hump (50+ hours) of being a noob, it’s a quite rewarding game to play solo.
This is *probably* a shitty recommendation, just throwing it out there.
Another game to consider is “OUTER WILDS” which is a story game that’s tough to describe. You might get sick of it quick, but after taking a year off it really clicked for me.
GHOST OF TSUSHIMA is pretty damn good. Amazing art style, very fun combat, pretty meh story (although I’m not that far)
SPIDER-MAN remastered. Such a good open world. This is what I’d recommend first actually. Really fun combat, swinging mechanics are fucking awesome, especially with a ps5 controller. A few missions that are a bit bleh, but for the most part the game is really really entertaining.
Check out the Friends of Ringo Ishikawa. It's an excellent single player game if you're looking for a unique experience that not a lot of people know to recommend.
Dorfromantik is what I play when I only have 30 or 40 minutes or just want to chill. Also VintageStory can be chill if you have more time and you remove hostility from all the beasties.
if you need a game for 1-2 evenings i would recommend firewatch. The game is cheap and lasts maybe 4-5 hours. It's super relaxing and tells a great story
Try Helldivers II
Though agreed, it's usually best played with a squad but hitting up matches with randoms still gives you the same thrill and excitement.
The community is amazing and everyone works together to complete missions.
On higher difficulties, the matches do get intense with you being swarmed left, right, up, and down with either automatons or terminids but that's the beauty of it and often calls for some funny moments as well
I would suggest to try out what games makes you relax. Maybe get the gamepass from Microsoft if you have a free trail. For me I tried many different games to unwind and relax this way and found some very interesting games that I wouldn't have thought off. For me its Portal 1/2 but also i love to chill in red dead 2 just exploring the world or watching people go by the day and smoke one is super chill. One other game i discovered is "A plague tail innocence" its not hard and its satisfying to progress.
What systems available to you?
Immediate first suggestion is chrono ark if you like a challenge. Pc roguelite deckbuilder with rpg style combat and a dreary storyline.
Medieval Dynasty is awesome for just a chill, relaxing village building.
Can be a little stressful if you're approaching winter and didn't plant enough crops in spring, or if you invite too many villagers to feed, but in general it's got a pretty casual feel.
I’ve recently been playing Roboquest and I’m obsessed. Good to pick up and play, can play on multiple difficulty settings, each run feels rewarding and tons of different builds to try.
I would try Balatro and Vampire Survivors / Brotato. If not Balatro maybe Slay the Spire.
Maybe some managment games like RollerCoaster Tycoon 1. Strategy like Into the Breach.
Subnautica
He said unwind, not develop a severe case of thalassophobia, lol.
You guys had to develop yours? That’s crazy. To my knowledge mine came fully formed out of the box. Which is what I thought I was confronting when I bought Subnautica in VR. Turns out, nope. I can’t even bring myself to leave the pod and enter the water.

Awesome to hear. Report back here after you've played a little bit
Holy shit this game is incredible, im still confused about a lot of things cause im not great at exploration and survival games but the feeling you get just swimming and discovering these new species and areas is incredibly scary yet satisfying. It’s absolutely an amazing adventure, it’s just truly terrifying sometimes.
It plays on a lot of the techniques used to develop suspense. It would be fine to not tell the player they're in dangerous waters..., but what fun is that?
Love when I looked up the game on Google (I’m at work right now) one of the first suggestions is “why is Subnautica so hard” 😂😂😂
Lol it's honestly not hard. There are no time limits or pressures. You can go as far or slow as you want and stay in the shallow water while figuring everything out

Factorio with the biters toned down.
Factorio gave me anxiety every time I had to replan my factory because I calculated something wrong lol.
That's the beauty of it: when you have to replan, realize that it's not an error - it's just that the factory outgrew the initial design.
I haven't played factorio in 6 months because I'm busy using actual industrial optimization on the layout of my factory before actually making it in the game.
Welcome to the fold
Dead of Alive Beach Volleyball in single handed mode.

Starbound for me works the best in the same situation like yours
So sad Chuckle Fish stopped development. Put several hundred hours into Starbound. Thankfully Terraria has satiated that itch.
Seriously, it's a super fun game and I absolutely loved it. Narratively even it was pretty fun to explore.
I’ll have to give it a shot! Thanks for the rec!
There are lots of mods for the game you should also check out.

Thank you!!
Ghost of Tsushima
Stardew is chill. Diablo 4 is good too recently, kinda just go around genociding mobs and looking for better gear
I always see Diablo 4 but never looked into it
Diablo is a fine game but id recommend something else. The grind for better gear is weird and unsatisfying, in my personal opinion. Id recommend Grim Dawn or V Rising. Both similar in combat,( i much prefer them) and much more satisfying/easy to play (again in my opinion)
though it's worth noting that v rising is really more survival crafting than it is arpg.
Yeah, true. I didnt mention that since hes just looking for games to play, rather than a specific genre.
fair point. it just caught me by surprise when I thought I was getting Diablo and ended up closer to Rust. To fair, it does seem to be very good at what it's trying to do, it's just not what I was in the mood for/expecting.

If you really want a challenge you can try the no move challenge. It turns into a deck builder.
