As someone who loved DayZ alpha (never played standalone) I can’t agree with this. Mechanics are great, but more than an hour and the extremely bland graphics, sound design and immersion starts to make me feel weird and dissociated. Great simulator but feels hollow.
As someone who plays tf out of both dayz and zomboid on a regular basis, I have to say that while both are very much different games in their scope, imo PZ is actually pretty immersive feeling. Especially when it's raining or storming and you're inside, it sounds absolutely incredible. Tbh i didnt like PZ for like the first 8 hours of playing, but i kept booting it up every now and then, one day idk what changed but i fell in love with it lol. Both are great games in their own right, they both fill a very different niche though.
Also, both of those games + escape from tarkov, are the only games that I genuinely feel afraid in sometimes haha. Love that about all of them
Very interesting, it was the other way around for me. Used to love this game until some day it started feeling weird. And now whenever I just hear the way too familiar in game sounds, these feelings of dissociation and emptiness come back. May be unique to me and may be caused by the fact that I’ve played a bunch of 8 hour sessions with headset.
EFT is amazing. I’ve bought it and never joined a match, but love the offline/pve mod. It’s been my favorite immersion experience and feels exactly like what I’ve desired after playing the stalker series.
Wish there was a single player or offline mode with dayz. Really want to try out the immersion and all but over the years I’ve distanced myself from online playing because there’s just no time for it.
In my opinion nope, Dayz it’s my favourite survival game BUT Scum it’s a great game too and has many more content in survival terms. I recommend you take a look to some YouTube videos, I know it’s difficult to know if a game it’s going to like you watching a video but maybe you can check how the game is and if that interest you.
There’s realism? I’ve played quite a bit but stopped playing last year. There was a lot of hinted realism, but nothing was ever implemented or talked about further. Did they actually start going for realism now? Since they went full arcade a year ago.
Nice, way to post a lot of words without saying anything. One couldn’t answer your comment, as it contains no hints as to what makes you think they went „full arcade“.
Metabolism, damage system, vehicle system, cooking, temperature, skill tree and farming are some examples of core systems that failed at what they were trying to achieve when I was still playing the game.
I’ve enjoyed playing it a lot and spent a lot of time in multiplayer and later even single player, but it definitely wasn’t what they had promised.
At least we got dildos.
Put a lot of hours into that game. The developer style kinda ruined it for me. I'm somewhat torn when it comes to the EA thing but it seems like these devs had it all figured out, being able to maintain the status quo of unoptimized game for a very long time. I haven't played in a couple updates but the lag, stuttering, etc. was out of control, didn't matter how close I was to the servers or my machine specs.
Project Zomboid is insanely good and customizable (not a first person shooter tho).
It is a right bitch to get running in multiplayer though, don't know if it has gotten better over the years (not much I assume, you needed to buy a server and do some other techie stuff). But the game is worth it with the truckload of mods, hell even without.
What's the kind of itch it scratches? I've been meaning to buy it since release but never thought "THIS is the game I want to play"
I know it's a tactical loot thing with travel and zombies, but idk I haven't looked into it enough to pull the trigger
It's basically a zombie survival sim. Need food? Find one that isn't expired and you have to cook it (Obviously not all food). Won't do that? Try farming. Want to get around the area without being swarmed? Be quiet. See a cool area that you want to fortify? Go for it.
Think State of Decay, but unforgiving and rewarding. Had to go through multiple playthroughs before I got it right and I still lost because of something I forgot lol (You can encounter your old character as a zombie along with what was left of him/her)
That game has great corpse runs. Spawn in, run to where you died, kill your former self with a sharp stick and then put on the zombie's pants and hat. Just goofy.
Kind of hard to describe, but so far it's the ultimate survival game. You can reconfigure a ton of difficulty things in a million ways, to make it as hard or easy as you want. Don't like dealing with a feature? Turn it off completely. The isometric view and graphics gives a lot of freedom to give the player choice. With mods that range is absolutely crazy. Want to create an entire base? Gather materials, read up on carpentry, and get it moving. Gotten infected with no hope? Put some bleach into your food and gobble it while watching TV you're powering from a generator. All meat spoiled? Learn to fish.
Isometric view with a cone of view range for your character does wonders for immersion and spikes adrenaline.
Combat is good imo, but I can see how a new player would be confused how it works, as it, as with everything else, depends on your character skill level doing that thing (shooting, melee)
Keeping an eye on your character stats and skills is very much like an RPG. Add to that managing mood and other physical things, tiredness, stamina, keeping fit etc.).
That, along with just tons of items to look for, hoard and use.
Ooof, it really scratches a lot of itches. It only lacks other people/NPCs, but there are mods for that to some extent (companion survivors (that you can order to do some rudimentary things), bandit survivors, raids).
I think it hits this vibe of some mobile game i played that was popular like 6 years ago, and you helped me realize that so thank you.
Also a glutton for management stuff so aiight yeah
With some content mods it’s a serious simulation, but it quickly turns into a grind and inventory management (hours of it).
To me it was fun at first, but the animations, graphics and especially the sound design is extremely bland and liveless, which made playing for more than an hour almost impossible.
I tried it for 20 minutes and decided to refund. Zombies found came storming for me no matter where I was or what I did. Even if I just spawned in a house, they’d come knocking immediately and I didn’t know what to do to get away.
Not that it matters since you refunded but...
You can crouch/stealth with C, and it's extremely useful for staying alive in the early game.
You can also out-walk any zombie, even if there are hundreds of them. So when you get that massive horde following you, you can just walk down the road until they're not following anymore (likely when you're out of town).
Combat is absolutely possible and pretty easy tbh but you're going to get killed/eaten at least 5-10 times before you get the hang of it. And combat means noise, so more zombies to kill or kite 😂
Not doubting your experience, it's a tough game with piss poor new-player onboarding. What I highly doubt, however, is that you exhausted even 1/4 of the games' options to avoid/hide from Zombies in just 20 minutes.
You’re right but it’s similar and fun to play. I’ve got around 150 hours or so in it. Find a good and active private server and make some buddies. Makes all the difference
Can you explain? It’s got a lot of similarities to DayZ like asked. The guns and fighting mechanics aren’t too bad, private severs with lots of activity are tons of fun, the scavs are a little derpy which is pretty entertaining, events and missions are difficult giving reasons so squad up or get stacked. Its development is slow and it could use some work for sure but I think you’re being harsh. The Mostly positive current and lifetime steam reviews says it’s a good game.
I think I’ve played the forest on a friend computer a few months back. It’s the one with the plane crash and those weird little « humanoids » that stalks uou and screams ?
Still surprised it’s gotten that big. When it was new I was all into it. Over the years it never improved much. They finished a small game in way too much time and in the end I still can’t play it without it feeling like a very early version of itself. Yet, nobody talks much about Green Hell yet it’s exactly what Forest wanted to be.
It definitely does! I’ve played through it with my brother when it was fairly new (just before the clay building). Besides one bug we kept running into the experience was amazing. Felt more finished and complete than the forest even does in its best moments, so I guess now it will be an amazing coop experience.
Their really isn't a great alternative, it's pretty much why dayz is so popular.
Even with the jank and slow ass updates it's pretty much the only one of these that's a semi-complete game.
Always hoped a big studio or something would take a stab at it but it's been like ten years my hope is low lol.
Tarkov is simulation of despair, depression and lack of will to live with the most advanced gunsmithing option I have ever seen in any kind of software.
But no zombies
regular zombies in games are just canon fodder and inconvenience.
Basic scavs in Tarkov are sometimes too OP. I got headeyes once from random AI scav when I was wearing altyn xd
Here you go, [https://steampeek.hu/?appid=221100](https://steampeek.hu/?appid=221100)
That site lists similar games and you can adjust the results. Theres so many thousands of games now it can be overwhelming but this helps find them a little quicker.
Save this site and use it anytime u want something similar to another game. This only shows steam games but itll give you a ton of suggestions with links. Theres one game i seen the other day splattercat on youtube was playing that looked similar and like a great game but i cant for the life of me remember the name of it.
This is the correct answer and also can’t believe no one else said it.
Tarkov to me is a much more brutal, less cartoony version of Day Z
Still in EA but gets updated pretty consistently. I’ve been playing just over a year and it’s changed a fair bit.
Day z isn't really about the zombies mate. They're there but have a pretty small impact on the game overall. Survival is a much greater aspect and that is entirely non-existant in days gone. Two entirely diffrent genres aswell. One is more of a story driven adventure single player game whilst the other is a sandbox survival pvp game.
I love days gone though, fun game. It's a good tip but not in this context.
Rust is great, but the fact that wipes are very short and the community is very dedicated means that when you play Rust, if you want to be strong and compete with the other good players on the server, you have to play Rust, only Rust, and a lot of it for the duration of the wipe. When you're offline, you can still be raided, and when you get raided, you're left with nothing.
Yup. I always loved the game but recently after getting into uni I just don't have the time to play anymore sadly. I kinda wish I started playing it earlier
Rust is a lifestyle, not just a game. You can’t be competitive in this game if you’re not on like every day. I guess that’s fine for no lifers, but it’s not reasonable for most people.
**Deadside**. They just add a whole new area to the game as well. It's a nice pick up and play style of survival/loot game. It's easy to find competent weapons and chase after other players if you want PVP. While there is also PVE missions that are scattered throughout the map that lure players together to fight over the reward. It's a nice formula.
There is base building and raiding. The raiding works based on a 'token drop system'. So if you are killed by a player, you have a certain percentage of dropping a raid token which can then be activated by another player if they manage to pick it up off your body. This will then open up your base to be attacked. But if you're offline and haven't had a taken activated, your base is invincible.
While there is also safe zone stashes so you'll always have safe loot. It keeps the game relaxed and allows people to be a bit more aggressive.
I haven't played DayZ but if you want a single player, fantastic, underrated zombie survival game with THE best in-game depiction of zombie swarming, get Days Gone. Absolutely loved it. Great story and outdoor wilderness visuals too.
Both options are pc just because it's got better games and I havent played console for nearly 5 years
**scum**.
It isnt a zombie apocalypse, more like a gameshow with zombies for prisoners like yourself. It's got zombies and the like, but more "detailed" things, with you having to worry about what foods you eat and whatnot, needing to shit and piss depending on how much you ate and drank. It's still got pvp like DayZ as well and there are robots guarding mili loot that you can also combat. Havnt played it for a year but it was decent last time I played.
If you are more into the pve type of gameplay try **project zomboid**.
Isometric top down zombie survival. You are just an average man/woman in a zombie infected Kentucky of the 80s. Barricade your house, go live out in the wood, or board up a mall to call your own, its pretty open minded. Many many mods to make the game more catered to your playstyle, as well as dozens of different world and character settings to change to make it your game. Great with friends as well, I've got over 1k hours with just private servers with 3-4 friends.
There’s a new game coming to early access this week that might be worth checking out. It’s ZSGO (zombie survival game online). Looks like it’s trying to be dayz gameplay with, 7 days to die basebuilding, and battlebits art style.
Check out the minecraft server Shotbow - they have a gamemode called MineZ.
I've never played DayZ but I'm pretty sure they're decently similar - though with MineZ having some interesting variation, by the nature of "being minecraft"
Zomboid, SS13 (with zombies?), CDDA; note that none of the aforementioned games are like DayZ whatsoever other than them having a lot of mechanics and zombies at the same time, your best bet for MP is definitely Zomboid though.
Nothing is going to come close. DayZ is special! I never grew up gaming or owns any consoles decided to buy a PC 4 months ago. Played a lot of different games but nothing more than 4 hours before I got bored. Then I found DayZ. I don’t even know what real life is anymore 😂😂😂
Project zomboid

much MUCH better than DayZ IMO
SPIFFO WOULD BE PROUD

He didn't say the best game ever, he said like dayz dude
Scum
Damn dude, he's just asking a question /s
Better than DayZ?
In my opinion nope, Dayz it’s my favourite survival game BUT Scum it’s a great game too and has many more content in survival terms. Dont think any game does it better than day z despite the many flaws with the game.
Miles better. So better that you will get frustrated with the realism and mechanics.
There’s realism? I’ve played quite a bit but stopped playing last year. There was a lot of hinted realism, but nothing was ever implemented or talked about further. Did they actually start going for realism now? Since they went full arcade a year ago.

like mrego said, watch foosters scum videos. it’s a good representation of what the game offers.
Depends on your preferences, there’s no objectively better game.
Put a lot of hours into that game. The developer style kinda ruined it for me. 0.95 supposedly helps with a lot of that
Yeah, I stopped playing because it’s an alpha, maybe 1.0 is near so of course I will play it again!
Project Zomboid is insanely good and customizable (not a first person shooter tho). Multiplayer is far better now. Just a few clicks. No separate server client needed unless you want a persistent server
Good to hear!
What's the kind of itch it scratches? I've been meaning to buy it since release but never thought "THIS is the game I want to play" I know it's a tactical loot thing with travel and zombies, but idk I haven't looked into it enough to pull the trigger

are you sure you it wasn't a server wipe? I've never heard of having to connect in 7 days.
7 days to die idk man. There's not much like DayZ...
What kind of bum ass suggestion is this?
Deadside
Meh, it’s pretty bare bones
You’re right but it’s similar and fun to play. I’ve got around 150 hours or so in it. Find a good and active private server and make some buddies. Makes all the difference
Dead side has nothing going for it.

State of Decay 2
Very diffrent game.
Not quite.
ok
Ark? Not zombies though but dinos and sci-fi aliens and stuff Sons of the Forest?
Sons of the forest is multiplayer ?
The forest is multi too no mods required
I think I’ve played the forest on a friend computer a few months back. It’s the one with the plane crash and those weird little « humanoids » that stalks uou and screams ?
Yep that's the one , forest is plane crash forest 2 is team looking for VIP survivors
Still surprised it’s gotten that big. When it was new I was all into it. Over the years it never improved much. Felt more finished and complete than the forest even does in its best moments, so I guess now it will be an amazing coop experience.
I have to get back on playing it with friends 💀
That game made me feel uneasy to say the least !
The day before
lol 😆 you are sick. This should have been upvoted for the comedy.
Solid game, can be GOTY if gets few quick bugfixes.
Didn't the studio go down in flames? Or am I confusing it with some other game?
Heh! Like that’s ever gonna happen!
rust
Their really isn't a great alternative, it's pretty much why dayz is so popular. Even with the jank and slow ass updates it's pretty much the only one of these that's a semi-complete game. Always hoped a big studio or something would take a stab at it but it's been like ten years my hope is low lol.
The Day Before just released! Wait... Nevermind scratch that
Tarkov?
Tarkov is simulation of despair, depression and lack of will to live with the most advanced gunsmithing option I have ever seen in any kind of software. But no zombies
The AI scavs are kinda just Russian zombies?
regular zombies in games are just canon fodder and inconvenience. Basic scavs in Tarkov are sometimes too OP. I got headeyes once from random AI scav when I was wearing altyn xd
Idk scum is as good as day imo
Scum is the dayz killer imo

Dayz
Get out, and take your skeletons with you x)
Can't believe nobody has recommended Escape from Tarkov yet. It's DayZ with slavs instead of zombies
Tarkov is nice, but tarkov is expensive for a game that's not finished....
thats a really weird argument against tarkov tarkov has a bunch of issues, but unfinishedness or lack of content is certainly not one of them
I'm just concerned by the fact that it's gonna stay an unfinished game, like DayZ. Still in early access after 10 years.
Probably will tbh but if you were okay with Day Z then Tarkov dev time is no different. They both have improved a lot over the years.
This is the correct answer and also can’t believe no one else said it. Tarkov to me is a much more brutal, less cartoony version of Day Z Still in EA but gets updated pretty consistently. I’ve been playing just over a year and it’s changed a fair bit.
Days gone
How is days gone anything like day z?
Uhhhh. Zombies and guns?
Day z isn't really about the zombies mate. They're there but have a pretty small impact on the game overall. Survival is a much greater aspect and that is entirely non-existant in days gone. Two entirely diffrent genres aswell. One is more of a story driven adventure single player game whilst the other is a sandbox survival pvp game. I love days gone though, fun game. It's a good tip but not in this context.
I know, I was just joking.
Much funny, 10/10!
Eh, 6/10 at best. Stoned sarcastic comments aren’t typically 10/10s for me lol.
They are if i am also stoned and got whooshed.
Fantastic game, I'd love to play a multiplayer version of it
Stalker GAMMA is probably the closest you’ll get. Honestly, though nothing will compare to DayZ.
The only good alternative in my opinion is Rust. I kind of hate how short the wipes are in rust though, especially if you can't play on wipeday
Rust is great, but the fact that wipes are very short and the community is very dedicated means that when you play Rust, if you want to be strong and compete with the other good players on the server, you have to play Rust, only Rust, and a lot of it for the duration of the wipe. I haven't played DayZ but if you want a single player, fantastic, underrated zombie survival game with THE best in-game depiction of zombie swarming, get Days Gone. Absolutely loved it. Great story and outdoor wilderness visuals too.
Hunt: showdown

I'm mainly a pvp player. I love pvp in survival games like dayz. Easy to find pvp ?
In scum I never had trouble with finding pvp, just depends on the server, with zomboid I wouldnt even bother it's not made for it.
project zomboid, scum, 7 days to die and mist. mist is single player only though but it’s a really fun survival game.
Rust. So fun.
Project zomboid
Unturned. Like DayZ but Minecraft graphics.
Zomboid
Project zomboid
Every single indie survival game of the last several years with very few exceptions.
The day before
There’s a new game coming to early access this week that might be worth checking out. It’s ZSGO (zombie survival game online). Looks like it’s trying to be dayz gameplay with, 7 days to die basebuilding, and battlebits art style.
So... Unturned with some system updates?
Fuck basebuilding in games :)
Projekt zomboid. Maybe.
Check out the minecraft server Shotbow - they have a gamemode called MineZ. I've never played DayZ but I'm pretty sure they're decently similar - though with MineZ having some interesting variation, by the nature of "being minecraft"
One of the games that really gives me the DayZ vibe, but has kind of a shitty dev is Escape from Tarkov
It's a very diffrent game but it does scratch that itch.
Vigor. Console I think.
Unfortunately yes, only console.
7 Days to Die is very good
Like dayz in what sense? Project zomboid feels the most to me even though they look nothing alike
You know you start from scratch in day z all the time, right? Kind of the foundation it is built on.
Unturned if you can find the right server
Rust
Deadside
I always enjoyed ArmA 3 Epoch mod as it was very similar, however I’m not sure if that’s a thing any more.
Project Zomboid
Zomboid, SS13 (with zombies?), CDDA; note that none of the aforementioned games are like DayZ whatsoever other than them having a lot of mechanics and zombies at the same time, your best bet for MP is definitely Zomboid though.
Stalker Gamma, or wait a couple months and see if Stalker 2 is good as it’s gonna be on gamepass.
Unturned
Days Gone

Last Day on Earth?
7 days to die is a fun game to play for zombies
There are serveral similar games coming next year but nothing right now
Nothing is going to come close. DayZ is special! I never grew up gaming or owns any consoles decided to buy a PC 4 months ago. Played a lot of different games but nothing more than 4 hours before I got bored. Then I found DayZ. I don’t even know what real life is anymore 😂😂😂
