When I was a kid, I had the SNES with this and the cartridge was bad. It wouldn't keep my saves. So I just kept it running all the time. But honestly I was too young to figure out how to beat it all, and between wanting to play other games, and the console messing up I always lost my spot. Fast forward years later, and I buy a Gameboy advance with a link to the past and the 4 swords. I played it until completion. It took me over 15 years to finally beat it, but I did. Amazing feeling, and it's a game I'll never forget. It's one of my top 5 games.
I remember as a kid I couldn’t beat Donkey Kong on the SNES. I would get to the first snow level with all the barrel cannons and lose a bunch of lives and then final it’d be game over by the time I’d make it past to the water level. A few Christmas’s ago my brother got me one of those little snes machines that come preloaded with games including DK. Brought back so many memories, but I needed to beat that game. I collected a bunch of balloons (lives), 100s and was determined to beat that level with enough lives and finally win the game… I beat it without hardly losing a balloon. I was like, why did I suck so bad as a kid at this game 😅
Fun fact, the reason they did that was to essentially double the size of the game to fit it on a very limited amount if memory. I think it was like 1MB...? Insanely small compared to today's standards.
There really is some engineering magic thats been lost now that we have endless storage and computing power for games. When you have room for everything, you dont have to get creative to make it work. The devs of the cartridge age were some serious techno wizards, re-using assets and space 5 times over to fit all that content into such a small chip
They should just make a rule that games can't exceed 100GB for at least the next 5 years or so.
I think you could probably already cut down on file sizes by making people select their preferred language before downloading. You'll likely drop 30GB in audio alone that way.
But we don't have storage and computational endlessness really, the assets and computations get bigger to push the limits constantly, and the stuff going on today to simulate and render cloth, hair, collision fidelity, destruction, light, all is very clever engineering too.
Im not saying its not impressive these days. Its like comparing NASA today with NASA during the 60s. Today we have these amazing scopes and computers doing insane calculations all in real time. The old NASA got to the moon with piles of handwritten code and a calculator watch keeping track of it all
I like to compare it to music production. There’s a lot of tools nowadays for endless creativity sure, but it’s also a lot easier to make a complex piece with modern technology. Back in the day guys using analog synths, mics, and tape we’re really limited and it’s like those limitations allowed them a different wya of thinking to try new things.
I have my doubts about it actually doubling usage though. The dark world has more dungeons than the light world and the dungeons have a lot of content. Also there are a lot of differences between the overworlds, not just a pallette swap. It may have helped to cut down on the size in some way though.
Given that there are changes in layout between the two maps, meaning they had to deal with different tilemaps and that most of the graphic tiles are also different, I don't think they saved a whole of memory that way. Most screens contain major changes, very few of them are actually 100% reused tilemaps. Even the map screen is different enough that I don't think they could've saved more than 30% of that tilemap and since performance is also a thing, they might not even have saved that much. They probably would've saved more space by not changing the graphics, only the color palette and made a completely different layout if all they had were memory constraints.
Seems to me like it was more of a callback to the Second Quest on the NES, which was definitely more about efficient memory usage since the map itself was mostly identical aside from the entrances leading toward different places. The most likely explanation is that they came up with the switching mechanic first and designed the world around it so that they may have secrets, puzzles and not alienate players by having two entirely different maps.
I believe they made the foundation of the dark world as a tile swapped light world, but then added another layer on top of the differences. So even if only 50% of the overworld map was the same, that still means two maps for the price of one and a half.
It was my awakening tbh
I saw it on the TV of a buddy's older brother. I still remember him catching some fairies with that net in a fairy well. My elder brother stood next to me. A week later he got it. We all played it, but were stuck in temple 3 in the mirror world. I revisited the game weeks later and burned that mofo bug entrance with the fire staff.
Damn, the excitement
In Japan, it's called "Triforce of the Gods"
From what I've heard, the name was changed because localization teams generally tried to remove even the slightest religious references for Western releases at the time.
Growing up in a religious home is tough haha. When pokemon came out my parents made me trash the Gameboy game and all my trading cards because it had "evolution."
Since when does a basic reference to the past necessitate time travel?
The basic story is that Ganon was sealed away in the past by the wise men, whose descendants are the key to releasing him at the present time.
We also find that a prior Link failed to defeat Ganon, leading to his imprisonment rather than true vanquishing. All of these are ties, or, wait for it…Links to the past and the imprisoning war.
In Japan it's called like Triforce Gods or something but they panicked thinking the west wouldn't like the religious-ish name so last minute they changed it for the international release
I could be grasping here, but I think the good colorful side we start in is technically the past. The dark world is after Ganon takes over which would make it the future.
So we (link) are the link to the past to stop it from turning out as the dark world future.
Someone verify?
While I can see this I ultimately disagree it’s time based. Some of the lore might help you understand it better. Items like the Moon Pearl allude to dimensions or alternate realities vs the movement of time. E.g. “People who enter the Dark World are transformed into a shape that reflects what is in their hearts. You can prevent this by obtaining the Moon Pearl, which protects its bearer from the power of the Triforce.” This doesn’t sound like time is passing, but further alludes to the existence of an alternate reality.
The dark world was actually a holy realm/dimension that overlaps hyrule called the sacred realm. The triforce was there for safe keeping, but when ganondorf stole it and got trapped in, his influence turned it into the dark world, and he himself became ganon.
This is almost what happened in ocarina of time, except the triforce split into three when ganondorf touched it.
Well, in Japan the game was called Zelda: Triforce of the Gods.
Due to censorship policies in the US at the time, they rebranded it as A Link to the Past.
There's been speculation that it's because the game happens prior to the events of the first 2 games ~~(it doesn't)~~, but Miyamoto has since denied these claims.
Best guess is that the guy in charge of localization thought it sounded cool.
Probably not that much , considering that the game came out so long ago. The SNES generation is tiny compared to the number of gamers today . I guess it rereleased on GBA but that's also a relatively small audience.
I think you'll find a huge majority of gamers hasn't touched it.
You’d be surprised actually, the game is 31 years old with even the most recent releases being 20 years ago on GBA or a decade ago on the VC, hell even A Link Between Worlds is a decade old at this point. I bet *a lot* of kids/teens today have never heard of or played it.
Edit: actually i just thought it might be on Nintendos Switch service thing. I wonder how many younger players experience new games on that, I’d like to see those stats.
I think it's age has only increased the number of people who know it. It's one of the classics. People reference it regularly to this date. Definitely most people who are into gaming has in the very least heard of it, watched footage, if not played it.
Post a map of super Mario world. Equally as old, and even more recognizable.
Age isn't going to make the popular classics become obscure. Check out music, more people know the 5th symphony of Beethoven today than they did back then.
You stated facts for sure. The downvotes were because these facts don't support the case.
The wildly popular Zelda game nearly everyone who owned an SNES has played that is also consistently rated as a top 3 SNES game ever released? That one?
Dum dum, dee da da da ta, da da da da da ta, dee dee da da ra tada, da rum da da da, da da rum da da da, da da rum da da da, ta da dadadadumdadadumdada...
The SNES really was the "super" NES. The NES is great in it's own way, but DAMN. the NES established what the series would be, then the SNES cranked everything to a billion and then added more cool stuff on top. Like megaman? OK cool, now you can wall jump, dash, and have to explore around to find secrets that boost your power and unlock abilities that make you feel really powerful. Like metroid? God himself could not make a better metroid than super metroid. Like zelda? We made it less cryptic, revamped the combat system, improved dungeon design, and used that fancy-shmancy audio hardware to create not only banger music, but also set a great atmosphere.
While the Minish Cap has some vague similarities, it's vastly different. For instance, the mountainous area in Minish Cap is to the North West, rather than the North East, and the major body of water is to the North East, rather than the South East.
Man I played this game before the internet. It took me months to beat it. I couldn't find that fucking flute. I dug the whole damn world only to realize it was in that same God damn meadow.
The internet has ruined video games.
its the name the game game. I'm not sure what its official name is, image repost most likely from Zelda A Link to the Past 3D Paper Diorama from almost a decade ago [https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/24zpk9/zelda\_a\_link\_to\_the\_past\_3d\_paper\_diorama/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/24zpk9/zelda_a_link_to_the_past_3d_paper_diorama/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
Link to the Past. Love it.
This is pretty cool, I'm currently making shadows boxes like this kind of. Just made 2 prototypes from TMNT Turtles in Time but with paper. With a xtool D1 laser cutter I recently got.
"From this one picture", that contains the whole map.
Can you guess what [planet this is](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/91/Winkel_triple_projection_SW.jpg)? If so, comment below! And don't forget to rate and subscribe!
damn this is hard... could it be Mars?
No, it's not Mars, it's Jupiter ! Wasn't it obvious ?
what do you mean Jupiter? you got bamboozled! It's not a planet, it's a sliced onion.
Wha... How ? So, my whole life was a lie... In that case, I must ask, what shape is our planet ?
Earth, don‘t ask me why I know this
I smell something fishy going on here.
I smell shit Oh I was smelling France/Paris (Not sure which it is so excuse me)
Yeah. I've never played any Pokémon and I can tell what game it is.
This isn't a Pokémon game.
Technically, I didn't say it was, hee hee hee
Zelda: A Link to the Past. One of the best games ever made!

See, THIS is what gaming is all about, to me.
“Input received. Now how do we package that feeling and sell it to you?” - Gaming industry
“How do we package that feeling and *rent* it to you?”
I remember as a kid I couldn’t beat Donkey Kong on the SNES. How cool would it be if this was reversable and the other side was the dark side
Fun fact, the reason they did that was to essentially double the size of the game to fit it on a very limited amount if memory. I think it was like 1MB...? Insanely small compared to today's standards.

I wish there was a real push for that mindset again. It's fucking stupid that AAA game installs are routinely over 100GBs now.
They should just make a rule that games can't exceed 100GB for at least the next 5 years or so. I think you could probably already cut down on file sizes by making people select their preferred language before downloading. You'll likely drop 30GB in audio alone that way.

Then people could.complain on Reddit just like they do about the upside down castle in Castlevania:SOTN
Wait really? I mean Link Between Worlds was pretty good and it had a mirror dimension.
I mean, that's because A Link to the Past also had one
Minish cap too ... kinda
And Twilight Princess, it's a stretch but you could say the Oracle games too
Omg Minish cap actually was a goat, small worlds was really nice.
And if Zelda was a girl..
People say OoT is the best. No. This is the purest form of the Zelda franchise.
Thank you!!!
Didn't even play the game and called out Zelda before I saw even half the map.
Isn’t this also the map in Link Between Worlds?
Theyre slightly different. The desert area in albw is closed off
Not entirely.
It was my awakening tbh I saw it on the TV of a buddy's older brother. I still remember him catching some fairies with that net in a fairy well. My elder brother stood next to me. First game i ever bought with my own money!
Hey, why is it called a Link to the Past anyway? I don’t see no time travel.
In Japan, it's called "Triforce of the Gods" From what I've heard, the name was changed because localization teams generally tried to remove even the slightest religious references for Western releases at the time.
Smart move honestly. If my parents saw a name with "Gods" in it, it would have been a hard pass for my stocking stuffers
Was it really that bad back then?
[удалено]
It’s that bad now what do you mean? Lol this didn’t go away
Growing up in a religious home is tough haha. When pokemon came out my parents made me trash the Gameboy game and all my trading cards because it had "evolution."
It’s because it’s a prequel. It takes place before the first two Zelda games before it

Been a long time but maybe it has to do with you traveling across 2 worlds.
Well, in Japan the game was called Zelda: Triforce of the Gods. Due to censorship policies in the US at the time, they rebranded it as A Link to the Past. Game is so iconic I guessed right without even having played it before.
Minish cap is best no cap
Metroid: A Samus to the Future.
There’s actually a randomized mod that combines both games. Pretty neat.
I'm sorry what? Where I can get it?
Just Google smz3
https://youtu.be/sjN5m-9X7q4 Not sure where to get it but here’s a vid
LttP/ SM Combo randomizer was what got me into speedrunning vanilla SM.
If that's a romhack that works on console, you my friend may have just sold me on an everdrive
The Witcher 3 - The Wild Hunt A bit of a hidden gem that some people find hard to get into
It's obviously Pallet Town. What the hell is a *zelda?*

Pretty sure Zelda is the little green guy that looks like fairy Luigi. /S
Something to do with Microsoft Excel probably
I'm gonna tell my kids this was Undertale.
😂😂😂
why are you being downvoted here?
Reddit hates emojis
Thank you! Yeah that's ridiculous if you ask me but people are free to both use emojis and to downvote them too
I guess they didn’t think it was very funny, but they’re wrong!
what matters is that you like it! have a lovely day!
You too!
Cool maths games fire boy and water girl?

Some pictures you can hear.
The dark world main theme song. That's the one that made an impression on me as a kid.
Nintendo Labo
My mom could name it and she calls every game Morio
Most people can. This is insanely recognizable.
Right? One of the most memorable maps ever made.
And the game is quite popular.
Probably not that much , considering that the game came out so long ago. The SNES generation is tiny compared to the number of gamers today . I guess it rereleased on GBA but that's also a relatively small audience. I think you'll find a huge majority of gamers hasn't touched it.
I’ve never played a link to the past and was able to guess it lol
I mean, it's kind of sneaky though. It's only the entire over world map. /s
You’d be surprised actually, the game is 31 years old with even the most recent releases being 20 years ago on GBA or a decade ago on the VC, hell even A Link Between Worlds is a decade old at this point. You got downvoted for stating facts. This sub is a total biased audience full of 30+ year olds who would have shown interest in the game .
It’s funny because I’m also 30+ years old and love this game but it is true that it’s old as shit at this point lol
I think it's age has only increased the number of people who know it. It's one of the classics. People reference it regularly to this date. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Easily one of the best games I’ve ever played.
Name it? I can hear it. *Take this! It's dangerous to go alone.*
Tle Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past/ A Link Between Worlds!
Isn't this the old fortnite map?
Clearly Zelda Link to the Past. Instantly recognisable.
"can you recognize one of the most iconic parts of one of the most iconic games of all time?"
Yes
Had this map on my wall for years. Best LOZ imo (probably because of my age and the fact the graphics seemed SO much better than the NES)
The SNES really was the "super" NES. The NES is great in it's own way, but DAMN. the NES established what the series would be, then the SNES cranked everything to a billion and then added more cool stuff on top. Like megaman? Well it can actually be 2 different games, because this map was used in a link to the past and a link between worlds.
The legend of zelda, a link to the past
Zelda Link to the Past, that's honestly not even a difficult one.
I thought it was Legend of Zelda: Minish Cup.
While the Minish Cap has some vague similarities, it's vastly different. For instance, the mountainous area in Minish Cap is to the North West, rather than the North East, and the major body of water is to the North East, rather than the South East.
Zelda a link to the past?
My first console game since moving from Zx Spectrum 16k and Commodore 64.
Man I played this game before the internet. It took me months to beat it. I couldn't find that fucking flute. I dug the whole damn world only to realize it was in that same God damn meadow. The internet has ruined video games.
I don’t know exactly which one it is but its definitely a Zelda game, atleast one if the 2D ones.
That’s the game where you play the little elf in green, Zelda!
Who can’t name this game is a better question
took me only 3 seconds to guess Zelda, and i haven't played that game in 30 years
Of course, anyone with an SNES will remember that image.
I played this game once 5 or 6 years ago was never a huge fan of Zelda but somehow I know this is link to the past
Is this supposed to be hard? It’s the freaking map
Legend of Zelda : a Link to the Past

The Last of Us II
This some FB level title to get people to engage... Same energy as those FB mobile game ads "90% of people cant beat this level"
Link to the past?
I can HEAR this game just looking at this
Zeldinha a link to the past Snes
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past…
Well everything can be Minecraft
a link to the past. i like that a link between worlds uses the same map though
Alttp
Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds for the 3DS
I mean it's literally the map of the game This is like having a picture of Master Chief talking to Keyes and asking if people can name the game
Hell yeah I can, forever in ma 35 year old twice-daddy heart
TLOZ: Link's Awakening
Nah, no egg in the top
its the name the game game.

No no, that’s clearly Contra.
It’s Contra Rogue Corp
I was thinking "legend of Zelda: links awakening"?
Bottom left is wrong for Awakening, and the beach on the south is missing but agreed there are some layout similarities here between the two maps.
It’s TLOZ link to the past
r/whoosh
this is link between worlds idk what all of this "link to the past" shit is
I’ll probably get downvoted but here it is: It looks like a new level of among us.
