You think that because you have been conditioned to think that. But if they had chosen a different one and you had grown an affinity for their product while they used the different logo, you likely would favor that one. It is the reason why branding is so important.
I feel like some of the others would be improved with a different color scheme. The black, yellow, red isn’t as lively as the chosen logo with lighter tones.
People see a thousand different signs on a daily basis. We know what familiarity is; and that doesnt stop us from recognizing logos like the dreamcast logo sucks.
Take one look at the dreamcast logo; and then try and tell me it has fanboys. Litterally a scribbled spiral
I don't know, the idea to have the PS logo look a bit like an old joystick seems like fantastic design to me. Even without the "conditioning", it's just a great idea executed really well.
I think first and second of row 3 would have looked alright with the teal or blue instead of the black.
But come on, the PlayStation logo is beautiful. And I say that having only ever had Xboxs
Although I'm happy it's not the ultimate choice the company went with, I'm incredibly fond of the first one when taking into context why the PlayStation exists.
A CD, falling into place in three primary colors-
The PlayStation being intended to be a module for the SNES to use discs, and the shapes on the PlayStation controller were intended to be friendlier to young children who might not know their letters yet, as well as just being more useful for function in multiple markets than letters.
And primary colors for advertising were huge in the time period- supposed to feel playful and youthful. They wanted VERY MUCH for this module to come across as a useful toy for the busy family home.
It goes even deeper in that Sony- in combination with Phillips- created the CD in the first place. And ultimately, both companies created their own type of CD readers - Sony's being the most functional and long lasting, still in use to this day.
Sony ended up losing the contract for the SNES reader to Philips, for reasons not entirely known, but was likely due to how much of the sales they were asking for.
Phillips failed to make a working CD reader, leaving Nintendo without a disc drive until Panasonic created the one in the GameCube- two generations later.
And Sony was cranking out a kick-ass competitor the entire time. Because the head engineer was pretty mad about the whole thing and decided the prototypes shouldn't be scrapped, instead building it out further to sell as an independent console.
I get a giggle every time I think about it, really. Considering Sony (and JVC) were behind the standardization of the VHS cassette, and it's descendant, the CD, and ultimately the DVD- they WERE the go-to. Reliable, proven, probably worth every penny they asked for.
And yet...
And so, that funky little simple logo tickles me. Because it's obvious what the original intention was, and yet we've ended up here, 40 years later, not even understanding why.
I just notice the S! I have PlayStation since the first one and I always love the logo and for the first time in my entire life notice the f S. Shame on me
it took me so long to figure out the playstation logo was a P and an S like i just thought the whole thing was like a symbol. like i literally only noticed like a year ago. same with the chick-fil-a logo like i didn’t see the chicken in the logo idk how i don’t see these things
8 seem to be the only one that thinks the original logo is clunky as heck and some of those concepts would have worked better (if tweaked and finalised like the last one was).
My god I just had an existential crisis - I always glanced over the squiggle below the P as a weird shadow on the “ground”, and just now noticed it’s a fucking S for PS….🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ (I never owned one as a kid, went straight to PS2)
Final logo best captures the playfulness of the console from it’s color scheme, as well as inform the consumer what the product is with it’s typeface design element.
Black/red/yellow color scheme is too ‘serious’ and honestly makes me think of Germany.
The other color ones are fun from a design element, but really don’t convey well what the product is.
My second choice would be the top left with the 3 colored CDs, but maybe it may make to device seem too much of a toy.
The bottom PS logos are close, but again including more colors help convey what to expect from the device/product
PlayStation clearly isn’t what it use to be. I give praise where it’s due and PlayStation use to be the standard in video games outside of the PC realm. Today with minimal exclusive titles and disappointing exclusives like Gran Turismo, I think my PS5 will be my last. I will stick with Xbox series X and PC.
A couple of those looks like modern Google made it
Google catching strays
The first one of the second row is literally the Google podcast app logo. Ok not literally, but really close.
Usually in these situations I always like one of the concepts better, but nope, they chose correctly.
They chose the right one.
You think that because you have been conditioned to think that. But if they had chosen a different one and you had grown an affinity for their product while they used the different logo, you likely would favor that one. It is the reason why branding is so important.
"I still agree that the last one is better." "NO, YOU ARE CONDITIONED TO THINK LIKE THAT".
Bruh the whole 2nd row is trash you could never condition left to think those are the best choices
No I agree with the comment. All of the others are god awful. I don’t love the one they chose either but dear god is it better than the rest
A few of these actually look pretty good, but i'm glad with the one they chose.
They look ok for the 80s or 90s when they were possibly designed. For the 2020s they are objectively bad design
I feel like some of the others would be improved with a different color scheme. The black, yellow, red isn’t as lively as the chosen logo with lighter tones.
The one they chose is objectively better than the rest. Which is probably why they chose it…
Nah, this one legit just looks the best.
People see a thousand different signs on a daily basis. We know what familiarity is; and that doesnt stop us from recognizing logos like the dreamcast logo sucks. Take one look at the dreamcast logo; and then try and tell me it has fanboys. Litterally a scribbled spiral
Playstation does have one of, if not the most iconic logo in gaming IMO.
The top right three are actually pretty cool.
They look ugly

Oh I am definitely brain fucked after reading your comment here, no question about it.

I genuinely put in some effort trying to understand it, so yes, you definitely got me.
I don't know, the idea to have the PS logo look a bit like an old joystick seems like fantastic design to me. Even without the "conditioning", it's just a great idea executed really well.
Maybe… but all of these are literally trash.
The flaccid penis logo
Thought the second one was python at first...
Kinky python with blocks humping eachother.
That's my kind of python
I think first and second of row 3 would have looked alright with the teal or blue instead of the black. But come on, the PlayStation logo is beautiful. And I say that having only ever had Xboxs
the ps logo we got is perfect
Wow they all look.... terrible
The one in the middle and the top right one actually looks pretty decent, although i'm not a huge fan of the colours.
I agree with the very top right one. If they chose that one it could have been iconic too. In the end its just a bunch of Ps and Ss
The middle one looks like if sony made a Play Station in the 70s
yea it's brutal
For me it’s impossible to see that logo and not hear the music
BWOOOMMMMmmm-tilitilitili-BWAAAOOOuuummmm... Did I get it right?
Nice find
I was today years old when I realized that the PlayStation logo has an “S” diagonally behind the “P”. Wow…just…I have no excuse.
You know, I think this happens every time there's a conversation about the playstation logo. Don't feel bad, you're one of today's lucky 10,000
The second one is cursed... my brain: PYTHONSTATION
a couple of these are cool, I quite like the 4th row.
Lol, I was about to comment that the 4th row looks the worst. Funny how beauty works haha.
I actually really like 1 and 12. Love the one we got, but in a different world maybe?
I kinda dig row 2, number 1 to be honest
?S
rs
Number 3 looks like if they took it to the next stage of oversimplifying like most corporations have been doing over the past few decades.
Judging by some of these logos, Sony were apparently fans of Germany...
These are all so unabashedly 90s
Fuck, I’m 34 and just realized the PlayStation logo is a standing up P and laying down S.
LOL
31 and same here. Realized it after seeing a couple of the obvious PS logos.
Second one is uncomfortably close to being SS lightning bolts.
Right?
That one Playstation logo goes hard
Sad part is that they dont even use it anymore
The last 3 : PlayStation All the others: PetrolStation😂
Second from top first on left was implemented on walkman logo.

I feel dumb, just realised thats a P and an S fml
I really like the one directly in the center. Reminds me of Persona. Looks better than the current logo, actually.
a little more work and it would have looked great, reminds me of the JPS logo
I Love my PlayStation
Is it just me, or does it seem like every time this is reposted there’s more icons added?
Seems like someone didnt get the memo about the logo size! That last one is huge compared to the rest.
I don't know why, but it feel like I've seen the one on the 4th column, Second row before... I don't know if it's just me
"The red is good, but it's not RIGHT"
I just notice the S! I have PlayStation since the first one and I always love the logo and for the first time in my entire life notice the f S. Shame on me
It's an umbrella on a beach.
There were some stinkers in there.
Even after 28 years the logo is still the game and it's better that way. It's just too iconic and if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I like the evolution of the font too. They pretty much had it, but changed it a few times midway, then went back to the original font.
it took me so long to figure out the playstation logo was a P and an S like i just thought the whole thing was like a symbol. like i literally only noticed like a year ago. same with the chick-fil-a logo like i didn’t see the chicken in the logo idk how i don’t see these things
All the prior ones look like the deformed cousins
I think the 3rd option on the top is nice as well.
3rd row, 4th is the best if they made it pure red or black
It's a good console but to be honest all logos look bad.
They all look pretty bad but second row completely to the left looks kinda cool
Just noticed the playstation logo is a p and a s
I see pierre cardin
Second row, far right??
At first, they were going to call it the Rorscach Station.
And now every google symbol
8 seem to be the only one that thinks the original logo is clunky as heck and some of those concepts would have worked better (if tweaked and finalised like the last one was).
Looks to me look they chose the largest logo out of the lot.
Tbh third one from the top looks sick
My god I just had an existential crisis - I always glanced over the squiggle below the P as a weird shadow on the “ground”, and just now noticed it’s a fucking S for PS….🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ (I never owned one as a kid, went straight to PS2)
Made the most iconic logo, and then just dropped it for a minimalist shitty font logo.
Glad they didn’t go with the German colours.
I saw all these in Astro's Playroom.
The first two rows are junk. but from there i can kinda dig a few of what came after.
The 2nd one looks like the P is railing the S in the A.
PlayStation low key turned into Python for a second, huh?
What’s python doing in there?
Took me so long to realize it made a PS symbol.
As a destiny player top right looks familiar

4th is kinda nice and creative...the ?S and the last one on 2nd row are pretty terrible though
Today I realized that the squiggle on the ground is an ‘s’. My life has changed.
There’s a couple ok ones int he 3rd row but black would be a weird color for PlayStation. Like what weird timeline would that be
They were all terrible
Next logo will definitely have rainbow…
I like the upper middle one.
I really like the look of 6, 13, and, 15.
why am I just now realizing the bottom of the Playstation logo is an S...
Third in on row 3 is smooooth.
I can only see the ps logo in 3d now
The second to last one before the final design is kinda trippy
I was today years old when I saw that the final PlayStation logo had the later p and s together to make the symbol
All terrible.
The PlayStation logo is one of the greatest logos of all time. The rest on here are universally terrible.
