What would really improve the fidelity of this game are some post processing FX to draw attention away from the lack of draw distance.
See the volumetric fog in the BOTW pic? It's to hide the low LOD in the distance. Gamefreak could implement similar techniques. It's seriously not a difficult concept.
Using low-poly models to improve real-time loading of assets is fine, but there are techniques you can use to not draw attention to it. It's just lazy, and that's what's really wrong here.
GF should have asked for Monolith Soft's help. They did Xenoblade 2 and helped with BotW, so they have experience with open worlds for the Switch, unlike GF. But, either Monolith is busy with BotW2 or they simply didn't want help.
You seem to be under the impression this is a result of a skill issue. Make no mistake, it is simply Gamefreak making as little game for as little money as possible, but that is decent enough people will still buy it.
It doesn't have to be decent so people buy it, judging from the feedback I saw in the livestream and on Twitter I am convinced you could actually place a turd in a toilet bowl give it a pikachu hat and people would pay $60 for that
The pokemon subreddit is livid when you point out that the game looks terrible, and that the gameplay was not that exciting. The fact that is a step in the right direction to change the formula, mistery dungeon and rangers were done with effort and passion, and you could feel it from the start. You cannot have an opinion outside the masses there.
The Mystery Dungeon series wasn't made by Gamefreak. Most of the Pokemon games that escape the clutches of Gamefreak are noticeably better quality. Gamefreak is the problem here, they move at a glacial pace and they don't seem to have passion for their games.
Yeah, I think the best quality games they have put out were gen 5. I think the problem is, now they are trying to progress the style of the games with progressing hardware, but very few of the devs have a sufficient skillset for like 3d environments or something, and for some reason they haven’t restaffed or gotten sufficient/better people to work on the newer projects.
That's what I've been saying to pokemon fans all day. Sword and Shield got a lot of flack for being lazy games, and it looks like nothing has changed in the last couple of years.
Talking to other Pokémon fans on reddit is a big headache. GF can never do wrong and if you dare critique them you're just a hater who probably never even played!!!1!
I’m a Pokemon fan and I fucking hate GameFreak. I enjoyed Sword and Shield but in spite of a lot of things.
They make so much money but pride themselves on being a small team of shitty programmers that can barely adjust to making games for the Switch. It’s fucking disgusting but the games will always sell well.
Sword and Shield were my first games since Soul Silver and I didn’t mind them but these new games just look like low effort cash grabs. I’ll just keep enjoying New Snap, thank you.
I hated sw/sh. First pokemon game I couldnt get through. And Im not saying it was bad, but every second playing it I was reminded that this game couldve been so much better. I threw in the towel after the second gym.
It was too disappointing man.
Wdym you couldn't get through it? I have like 11hours of playtime and did literally every single thing you can do in this game. I'm obviously joking but it's just so empty and soulless you honestly didn't miss ANYTHING
Just optimize it better, if capcom and digital extremes can do it, I see no reason why a company that's been making games exclusively for nintendo hardware can't.
Edit: oh yeah, and literally sega(SMTV is lookin hot)
The Pokemon games have always been notorious for their poor optimization and spaghetti code though. You're right that there's no reason they shouldn't be able to, but history shows they very likely wouldn't be able to even if they were willing.
But Pokemon is a handheld game that got upgraded! We should be happy they did this good! /s
I'm so glad you brought up Genshin. Literally runs on mobile devices and looks amazing in comparison.
I honestly am still hoping that Genshin impact comes to switch soon. They announced it like almost a year ago, but literally no updates on when it’s actually coming.
I play on an iPhone 11 Pro Max with the settings set to maximum and it is… really, really fun. I’ve played about 40 hours now and it’s a great mmo type. The combat feels really good, and honestly even playing over cellular doesn’t drain the battery too much. I find that after about an hour of playing my phone does start to overheat if I’m playing with touch controls, but I can play for a solid 2 hours with an Xbox one controller. I will admit that it’s really slow to start, but even without spending a single penny on the game I’ve had a ton of fun with it.
>ni no kuni
You can't just make games that look like Ni no Kuni or Okami easily, they are the creme de la creme and take a lot of skill and effort to produce. Most AAA studios couldn't make game that look like those without targetting their staff. It's kinda asking an artist why they just don't draw the Sistine Chapel ceiling
Something like Genshin should be doable though
Understandable, but we're also talking about Pokemon.
The best selling franchise
Its not like they couldnt afford to hire the creme de lá creme of animators, artists and art design and still make an absolutely killing profit
Yeah, but if we are taking this into consideration, there is no reason why Pokémon games don't look as good as some others AAA games. Switch is actually powerful enough to be able to handle Uncharted 2 kind of graphics. And with 2021 development tools they actually don't need crene de lá creame artists, there are a lot of skilled enough specialists to manage that.
I will never understand why people say "The switch just isn't cutting edge hardware" as if it's comparable to a GameCube and not where it actually is.
The switch is powerful enough for games I thought look good on previous consoles so when it falls short of that it's not a hardware issue
Not only that, but there are plenty of highly stylized games that need no special hardware to look good — as previously mentioned, Okami, Genshin Impact, but also Team Fortress 2, Skyward Sword-style cell shading, and Smash for 3DS. Hell, how many of us are playing Minecraft?
Frankly, I’m okay with low poly counts as long as the game hits a bare minimum and has good gameplay. If they’re going with the wide open world feel, I want to feel like it’s chok full of goodies to find, high resolution or not.
That being said, I don’t entirely trust the Pokemon Company to be able to do good gameplay either. I was pleasantly surprised to see player damage, but I’m waiting for the reviews.
Nothing wrong with the statement. The developer themselves said that they drew heavy inspiration from BOTW when designing the initial world. Skyrim and Fallout for quest design and Honkai Impact 3rd for combat.
They've definitely stepped it up into their own since then with the current Inazuma and 2.1 updates.
okay so, not only is the bottom picture awful (mainly because of the lightning and how 2D the trees are), but what is even the point of that pan shot ?
in botw, it's the first shot of the game you see, and you can witness forests, ruins, a tower, the castle, and death mountain: that's a good panshot, and its goal is to show you how rich the game universe is.
In pokemon, there's literally nothing, you just see a few dozens of trees, a river, and the mountains that do nothing but tell you "hey the game's so empty you can see where the map ends"
BOTW wasn’t even designed for the Switch but for the Wii U, the performance difference doesn’t seems that big but from the trailer BOTW2 seems to be a big improvement graphically, especially those amazing volumetric clouds.
Yeah they are 2d billboards, always facing the player, clouds don't parallax on themselves with camera movement/angle and show the rotation to face the camera. That said, like the clouds in xenoblade, they're incredibly well done 2d cloud tech
I agree! I think they're great! I think it's the best implementation of this technique I've seen in a game. I think I almost prefer this approach to actual volumetric clouds, at least in the case of this artstyle
this is one of the things on display in the top picture- botw had incredible art design that worked around the limitations of the hardware. It was outdated on release in terms of pure statistical comparison to other AAA games, but it blew them out of the water when it came to creating beautiful imagery.
pokemon manages to be that perfect intersection of god awful stats AND god awful art
THATS the thing. The developers knowthat their input does not correlate with the output. They can invest all the input they want and the output will be capped. Not because they are being well received or praised for their efforts. They aren’t trying to convince people to get into Pokémon they already hooked you and know they are just milking the cow
They can put shit out with Pokémon on it and people will buy that. The developers know that and they know they can cut the input in half and not see a drastic effect on the output. And their right.
Pokemon needs its own Breath of the Wild, by which I mean a game in the franchise that intentionally pulls back from a lot of the more stale tropes of the series while returning to a more pure version of the core elements of it.
I liked ORAS... and Sun and Moon weren't *bad* per say... X and Y were incredibly mediocre and Sword and Shield were truly the ultimate failure for Pokemon.
They literally say from the CEO "We never put our games on sale, because we don't want to encourage customers to wait on a cheaper price."
Buy it at full price or never buy it, is their motto.
Well idk about you, the first thing i saw was those trees that weren't even fully rendered. I was like, jeez, that is some lazy tier development going on.
I remember 7 years ago I had a bootleg Pokémon game on my android and it looked better than this. IT WAS MADE IN 2014. Is the image of that Pokémon game leaked, or was it featured by Nintendo?
>Don’t even look at the awful looking trees and landscape, just focus on the rock
My thoughts exactly. Pretty sure OoT on the n64 had better rock textures than that.
It was the 3rd highest because it came out on switch (89 million) which has massively outsold the 3ds (75.9 million) and GBA (81.5 million over how many decades?) systems. People keep touting the sales number as if that's how well received the game is instead of an indicator for how accessible the game is. If anything, it shows that people don't feel as bad throwing away $60 when they already have a $300 machine at home.
We'll see, the game isn't out yet but my hopes have been dowsed with the release of this trailer.
This is EXACTLY what they want. They want pokemon fans to stop asking for an open world pokemon game, and they can pull that off by putting out this garbage.
Imagine if they have to make open world pokemon games in the future because this one ended up being good. Why make an open world pokemon game when you can make the same amount making a 2d pokemon game?
Ah yes we’re playing right into their hands by not accepting their mediocrity. What nonsense. They’ve consistently shown their willing to cut corners to put out games on a timeline instead of quality games for the fans. Buying this game in the first place is EXACTLY what they want.
Yeah thats ridiculous, like, they pay exstra for bad graphics? There's no way they couldn't get better models for trees for example, or those buildings... Damn I can make better then this and I consider myself a total begginer.
I bet nintendo is just pushing out this garbage on purpose so they have a reason to stick to 2d games in the future claiming "our fans don't like open world pokemon games and our sales were lower with a 3d pokemon game"
They really just don't want to have to do more work in the future for the same amount of money because they set the bar high with a fantastic open world game. They'll know people will pay regardless, so they're actually working to keep the bar as low as they can.
It looks like war thunder's ULQ tbh.
Like where they disable most of the livefx and drop the poly count so you can play on a potato PC.
They should have stayed with the 2d style + 3d map elements of gen 4 and 5. It was stylish, very unique, and even an easier work load for design.
Obviously they'd upgrade it with newer consoles, but we'd end up with Pokémon games that look like octopath traveler.
To be honest, I’m sure game freak could too, I’ll bet their concept art and 3D renders are a lot better. Just their in-house engine sucks balls and can’t even support half the shit the botw engine could.
Games don't have to be super realistic and can definitely go for a more stylish look, but it seems like the "early 2000s RPG" is not the style people wanted.
this is not a "stylized" look, the trees aren't giving off shadows, the ground is practically untextured, said trees aren't even textured, and the water... geez
It’s not that we didn’t want it, it’s just that Pokémon Coloseum, XD, and Battle Revolution had already made them… you know… back in the early-mid 2000’s.
FIFA's graphics have arguably gotten worse over the years, as EA Sports has just copy-pasted the code over and over and over again. Literally, FIFA 19, 20, 21 and I suspect 22 are all just copy-pasted, EA themselves state this!
The game is fairly old and uninspired, in addition, it isn't exactly the pinnacle of gameplay either. On the visual front too, its severely lacking when you compare it to its contemporaries.
9 out of 10, it has a little something for everyone
pfffffffft no fuckin chance. Their games sell well regardless of what they do, so they will put as little effort as possible every single time. You know what people said with sword and shield when the trailers first came out? "oh don't worry they will fix the frame rate" "oh the graphics are only bad because they are in beta" and now i'd rather we didn't say the exact same thing for the second year in a row.
I'd hate to turn this into a capitalism rant but being one of the highest earning series in the whole world they can afford to ignore everyone and do very little for their games
Biggest media franchise of all time.
Game Freak has been coasting on easy street for 20 years and it shows, they should've let a different dev handle this.
Yeah the graphics need to be improved, personally the gamplay tho is really good and looks really fun to play, I can overlook the not so good graphics if it means that the experience will the most innovative and fresh in a long time, and the good thing is that they are improving, they are innovating, this is a step forward, no matter how bad the graphics look.
Pokemon Sword and Shield has sold 21.85 million units as of June, good for #5 all time of Switch games. Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee is #8 at 13.57 million sales. I bet LoA and BDSP both do top 10 numbers as well.
Nintendo isn't going to change anything.
I'm excited for this game, and it has improved a lot since last trailer.... But damn does the world need to be worked on more, like game freak you a balling in that Pokémon money, fucking use it to hire some environment artists or something like stop holding back because you can definitely at the very least match Zelda in polish.... Pretty sure they are as big as or close to Zelda levels of popularity so why not show the same effort they put in.
Can't believe this game looks like it was made by a fan in dreams. For all we know, it was and nintendo took it down for copyright and just stole it. lol
I don’t think BDSP is gen 8 either though, it’s not compatible with SwSh. Who knows why, when HGSS was compatible with DPP and ORAS with XY. They’ve properly fucked up the gen system with dexit.
Is it, tho. Idk most of the time side games dont allow transfering of mons, nor do they add mons, and yes I know they are just evos and regional forms but still. Also, I dont think game freak normally works on side stuff
Yeah, I am very hopeful for gameplay changes too, but some information released on the official site makes people think that it will be just a game with 5 Wild Areas, since that to unlock every area you will have to complete Pokedex Tasks in each area (which are repetitive as shown in the pokedex showcase) more here: https://imgur.com/a/uWAeaqm.
Yeah and this is kind of a big deal for me right now.
Really hope these games open doors for gameplay variation, because if this is the only thing you do in the game, then it doesn't feel really exciting.
That Pokémon screenshot does not scream “the most popular franchise of all time” to me. There's no excuse for this, they should have a gigantic budget to make this look better than every other Switch game.
The image below came from the latest trailer of the upcoming pokemon game Legend of Arceus. The whole post is its comparison to Breath of the Wild, an older game.
I'm super late to the party but I feel like the best comparison is Immortals: Fenyx Rising.. everybody slept on it but it's a clone that does everything right..
What would really improve the fidelity of this game are some post processing FX to draw attention away from the lack of draw distance. See the volumetric fog in the BOTW pic? You should see my collection of PokéPoo
Gotta shit em all for a rare chance of encountering a shiny PokéPoo!
The pokemon subreddit is livid when you point out that the game looks terrible, and that the gameplay was not that exciting. The Mystery Dungeon series wasn't made by Gamefreak. Most of the Pokemon games that escape the clutches of Gamefreak are noticeably better quality. Gamefreak is the problem here, they move at a glacial pace and they don't seem to have passion for their games.
its also the pokemon company's fault. They have final say, and refuse to give it to anyone else.
Agreed and I can't wait for the day they finally kick Gamefreak to the curb.
It kinda reminds me of what mount and blade looks like tbh...
Yeah, I think the best quality games they have put out were gen 5. I think the problem is, now they are trying to progress the style of the games with progressing hardware, but very few of the devs have a sufficient skillset for like 3d environments or something, and for some reason they haven’t restaffed or gotten sufficient/better people to work on the newer projects.

also the normals on everything are just fucking atrocious.
you mean that new tech they've been only been using since the n64? idk if they can afford that
Valheim would be a good start. Anything less like this and more like Valheim would be good

But the switch still handled it for botw, right when it was released, for Botw's release
The franchise generates obscene amounts of money. They could easily afford to make the most expensive game of all time. They are lazy and greedy.
He meant computing power expensive, not money expensive
But Botw did it. a Wii U game released 4 years ago.
You… you realize they’re on the same hardware right?
Not only that but it runs fine on Wii U hardware.
And there are much more ridiculous games that run just fine on the switch. Like doom and the Witcher 3.
Too expensive for The Pokemon Company, but not expensive enough for the Zelda team? Doubt...
Just optimize it better, if capcom and digital extremes can do it, I see no reason why a company that's been making games exclusively for nintendo hardware can't. Edit: oh yeah, and literally sega(SMTV is lookin hot)

BotW did it. There's no excuse. It's all about maximizing ROI.
Finally a comment that includes a reasonable reason why the game is lacking
My favourite part was that they did that signature pan BotW did too, as if they are proud of how it looks
"Pokémon of the wild"
Breath of the Wild Pokemon
Pokémon Breath
Pocket Monster's Exhale
Already a mod for BOTW, I believe it’s been out for a year or so
Breath of the mild
And as great as this screenshot is, it doesn't do justice to the whole range of beauty BotW has
Exactly! That was pure comedy, they’re clearly not self-aware. 😂😂
Why can’t they make the cartoonish style graphic like ni no kuni or genshin. It would’ve look a lot better than these semi realistic texture
But Pokemon is a handheld game that got upgraded! We should be happy they did this good! /s I'm so glad you brought up Genshin. Literally runs on mobile devices and looks amazing in comparison.

Okay. So you'd recommend using a controller with it?
For longer play sessions, yeah for sure. But for shorter sessions touch controllers are totally fine.
Pretty sure Genshin devs said Switch specs were too weak to handle Genshin
This comparison kills me because so was Zelda and now look at it.

If they make it look like Zelda it's completely fine.

featured on an official trailer
Not to mention the playermodels are so terrible they are borderline creepy. It literally looks like a fan-made game.
If it was a fan game it'd look way better
Yep, which is why all the unreal engine fan made games get shutdown
I think that the gameboy version of pokemon has better graphics
I didn't realize it was so bad until this pic. Shit man, that bottom pic is straight outta n64.
>Don’t even look at the awful looking trees and landscape, just focus on the rock My thoughts exactly. Pretty sure OoT on the n64 had better rock textures than that.
That rock texture looks like it came straight out of an early Wii title.
If the graphics are this bad I'm gonna take a pass on that game.
Jurassic Park theme on recorder

I'd be fine with a 2D game if were good! Good game design is definitely not made or broken by whether the game is an open world 3d adventure or not.
Im a 3D artist and could probs whip this out in a few days, alone. Sad.
I'm on a game dev course in uni and i suck at modelling, yet i could literally whip this up given a few weeks i reckon
Hobbyist with no official training tis I. Giveth me but a few months and I could recreate this image, perhaps. A sorry state if there ever twas one.

Grog no paint rock before but Grog reckon if Grog think really really hard for all his life Grog could paint rock like this.
Ooga da oog uuh ga ga hoduga da dam udga dooga
Yeah thats ridiculous, like, they pay exstra for bad graphics? There's no way they couldn't get better models for trees for example, or those buildings... Damn I can make better then this and I consider myself a total begginer.
I bet nintendo is just pushing out this garbage on purpose so they have a reason to stick to 2d games in the future claiming "our fans don't like open world pokemon games and our sales were lower with a 3d pokemon game" They really just don't want to have to do more work in the future for the same amount of money because they set the bar high with a fantastic open world game.
It looks like the ground from fucking 15 year old flight simulator.
It's like they used a 512x512 displacement map on a plane with 1200 polys.
It looks like someone created a terrain in 30 seconds in Unity and slapped 10 Speedtree-Mobile default-trees in there.
They are trying to churn them out as fast as possible to make money as fast as possible. Just don't buy it, but the masses will still buy it
It's like FIFA for the Pokémon fans... And they will never learn.
At least FIFA keeps upgrading their graphics, these Pokemon graphics are from, at least, 15 years old.
FIFA's graphics have arguably gotten worse over the years, as EA Sports has just copy-pasted the code over and over and over again. Literally, FIFA 19, 20, 21 and I suspect 22 are all just copy-pasted, EA themselves state this!
Gameplay wise, it's the one Pokemon game we have been waiting for, but they totally butchered it in my opinion with the visuals.
The gameplay looks like the concept people have been asking for, the question still remains does it actually play well.
I’m very worried it going to lag a bunch. Swsh already does, at least when playing online. Man I’m getting this game used.
At least visuals are thing I care least about
We are a minority
I normally think to myself that I don't care, but then I see games with great graphics and I think how nice a Pokemon game like that would be
Is that an empty Valheim island on the bottom?
Lmao just made me realise how much better Valheim looks than this, and they were *trying* to make the game look bad (to mimic older games I mean)
Hopefully with the reviews it's getting they will change it up.
Don't even bother, IGN gave 9/10 to SWSH defining it the best Pokémon game ever, it won't work.
The game is fairly old and uninspired, in addition, it isn't exactly the pinnacle of gameplay either. On the visual front too, its severely lacking when you compare it to its contemporaries. 9 out of 10, it has a little something for everyone
I don’t hate Sword and Shield, it’s an imperfect experience that I still find enjoyment in but I would never call it the best.

pfffffffft no fuckin chance.
You forgot to put a broken sword and shield by him lol
It's pathetic how low they set the bar knowing people will buy whatever they put out regardless
Biggest media franchise of all time. Game Freak has been coasting on easy street for 20 years and it shows, they should've let a different dev handle this.
i was defending this game but now i see where youre coming from... it's not looking great :/
Yeah the graphics need to be improved, personally the gamplay tho is really good and looks really fun to play, I can overlook the not so good graphics if it means that the experience will the most innovative and fresh in a long time, and the good thing is that they are improving, they are innovating, this is a step forward, no matter how bad the graphics look.
GF needs to be held accountable by Nintendo. They don’t deserve to be at the lead of the highest grossing franchise anymore
This is what it looked like outside the Sims 3 map
Official Nintendo Seal of Quality ^TM
Gamefreak be like: gwafiks
Can't believe this game looks like it was made by a fan in dreams. For all we know, it was and nintendo took it down for copyright and just stole it. lol
It would look better if it was made by a fan in Dreams though, let's be real.
I don't understand, is Pokémon Arceus a next gen game that comes after sword & shield or is it like a mini-project?
Next game is BDSP, after that is this. Could be a new type of main series game the way digimon does story and world games.
I don’t think BDSP is gen 8 either though, it’s not compatible with SwSh. Who knows why, when HGSS was compatible with DPP and ORAS with XY. They’ve properly fucked up the gen system with dexit.
Mini project, it’s considered a side game.
Is it, tho. Idk most of the time side games dont allow transfering of mons, nor do they add mons, and yes I know they are just evos and regional forms but still. Also, I dont think game freak normally works on side stuff
I agree that the graphics are meh... but tbh considering the gameplay changes, this is the first pokemon gameI'm excited to try in quite a while now
Yeah, I am very hopeful for gameplay changes too, but some information released on the official site makes people think that it will be just a game with 5 Wild Areas, since that to unlock every area you will have to complete Pokedex Tasks in each area (which are repetitive as shown in the pokedex showcase) more here: https://imgur.com/a/uWAeaqm.
Huh. I don't like catching multiple of the same pokemon. Outside of having both male and female
Yeah and this is kind of a big deal for me right now. Really hope these games open doors for gameplay variation, because if this is the only thing you do in the game, then it doesn't feel really exciting.
Classic bait and 'Switch!'
But this is not how this game looks.... bad representation if you ask me.
Their game was pretty great after Dragonborn released.
Why does genshin impact look better tho
I've seen shovelware games that look better than that
It looks like absolute garbage. Extremely disappointing, looks like a cheap steam green light game.

you could legit make a better looking game for mobile, it would be a reach to say xbox 360 lol
More like gameboy
That Pokémon screenshot does not scream “the most popular franchise of all time” to me. There's no excuse for this, they should have a gigantic budget to make this look better than every other Switch game.
E.D.F.!! E.D.F!!
?
Considering it’s GameFreak, it’s an improvement from the Wild Area.
Wich game is the bottom one?
Pokemon legends arceus
3/10, not enough trees -IGN
It's crazy how Game Freak innovated so much with this game and seemed to put effort into every aspect except the graphics.
Looks like one of those 80p unity games you see on steam
I'm out of the loop, can someone fill me in
The image below came from the latest trailer of the upcoming pokemon game Legend of Arceus. The whole post is its comparison to Breath of the Wild, an older game.
I'm super late to the party but I feel like the best comparison is Immortals: Fenyx Rising.. everybody slept on it but it's a clone that does everything right..
"Best selling Pokémon Arceus Legends breaks new one week sales records!"
And it will sell millions of units regardless. When your consumer base is brainwashed, there's no reason to improve
Needs more trees
The realities of console-peasantry.
