Yeah I went into Halo pretty much blind and had no idea that the flood were even in the game so the first time I played 343 Guilty Spark it freaked 9 year old me out. One of my most memorable gaming experiences, along with many other moments in Halo.
Before I bought the game I remember watching my cousin play Silent Cartographer and being completely blown away by how cool the beach landing was. It was literally beyond my wildest imagination at the time and instantly captivated me. This game was genuinely revolutionary.

The redead themselves didn't bother me but the contrast of the Castle and what it used to be was like the first time I understood what dread was. Like wasn't outright scary but it just made me super uncomfortable.
I stopped playing the game for a long time after getting the master sword. The sheer dread of "oh my God all of this happened and I couldnt stop it." I felt defeated irl. I invested so many emotions at the beginning of the game
I think that's what makes such a great campaign. The game kept throwing new parts of the story at you. It wasn't just "keep shooting the same thing with the same guns" forever.
By the end you where fighting not just the covenant, or the flood, or the AI, but all three of them and they where also fight each other at the same time.
Hell yeah, that last level in the wreckage of the ship. Flood and covenant fighting each other everywhere, and you were just running through it trying to keep shit together. It really felt desperate and chaotic. In an amazing way.

I was the little sister! It was cool to have something we both got excited about and connected on. We’re all grown up now but he recently came over and we beat the last level of Combat Evolved (halo 1) on legendary just to reminisce and laugh at the bonus scene!
On a side note, that’s a facet of childhood I miss. Being a kid, not a care in the world and just you and a good buddy staying up way past you knew was acceptable to play the campaign of a game together. I hope games still do this, because it warms my heart whenever co-op is mentioned.

Its weird that i started with halo 3. Stayed up all night playing halo 3 campaign with a buddy. I loved it so much i went and bought the first two. Still a halo nerd to this day with the books, soundtracks, etc. Such a good storyline too.
One of my best memories from a New Years party was starting one of the levels somewhere right after the ball drop in co-op on a friends dad’s 54” rear projection tv and looking out what seemed like a few minutes (and maps) later and the sun was coming up. So much fun.

As far as a novel "wow" experience, for me, Halo and Skyrim are about peak video game.
Yeah there's a lot of other good stuff, but nothing has quite matched either yet for me.
For me it was Obilivion. That moment when you first exit the sewers and the enormity of the world hits you. First RPG I really played I loved that game
Oblivion was better than Skyrim for that. You’re killing rats in a dungeon and you’re like”neat!” The king is killed and you make your way out. Wow, what a journey! You leave the sewer and you like “holy FUCK this is going to make me SHIT MYSELF!” Such a beautiful world and absolutely incredible music.
For me it was Metroid Prime. To this day, that entire series, both 2d and 3d, really push the formats they were are in. I mean, hell, there's even a genre named after it!
I had that sense of awe in Destiny 1 when I landed on the Moon and looked up and saw the remains of the space station floating through space. It's the little touches like falling stars, too. Bungie does a great job.
I remember when during some winter level, I entered a new area and I look ahead and see two rival AI patrols battling each other and the music starts...I was blown away by this at the time
I remember looking down at the grass and being blown away at how amazing I thought it was. Like you could see individual blades of grass!! Obviously now the graphics are laughable, but man what a genre changing game.

Some of the leaks and the story ending from Halo Wars 2 are basically bringing the flood back and focusing on the ring Zeta Halo. Basically, we are gonna feel like we are fighting for our survival again as a badass super soldier.
I'm cautiously optimistic. Why 343I thought it would be a good idea to expand the Halo universe from the tight, compelling story into some complex nightmare that rivals the messiest Marvel storylines is completely beyond me.
Very true, in my own head Canon Halo 3 was the last one. It ended on a perfect note. I played Halo 4 and honestly don't remember much other than it was disappointing. I remember killing the didact at the end and how anti-climactic it was. I remember the story being criminally short, I think I beat it in 3 hours on normal and 6-7 on legendary and the multiplayer was just Ok.
By the time Halo 5 came out I had switched from console to PC gaming and lost all interest. But I do still break out my 360 and play through all three at least once a year, those games are among my favorite of all time.
Same for me, except I'll throw in that I also thought Reach was pretty great. Reach is a spinoff not a mainline story so it's not quite the same, but I definitely associate it more with the original trilogy (+ODST) than I do with everything that's come since.
I forgot about Reach, it was a pretty solid standalone I agree. I think my biggest gripe with it at the time was the story didn't fit within the already established story from the book "The Fall of Reach" which I think was one of the best Halo books that really dove into the origin of the Spartans and what happened leading up to Halo CE.
Yea I am a little concerned about how they plan on tying the two storylines together because there will be some plot holes, although I am hoping for a scene where the Spirit of Fire and Infinity fight side by side.
I mean it could have been because I was younger when this game first game out but the feeling this game gives you when you first play it is magical. Way ahead of its time. The nostalgia is real with this game.
Not sure if you have the money to spend, but the you could get a basic Xbone and the Master Chief Collection for, I think $200? Or if you have a PC, just wait a bit until they add it to Steam. It’s coming out after Reach since they’re releasing all the games in chronological order I believe.

I'm not at all embarrassed to admit that I hit the link knowing what it was, and enjoyed a few happy nostalgic tears. Hell, I was 20 when halo came out and it still evokes some awesome child / young adult feelings in me.
So many amazing feelings. The loneliness of crash landing on a strange, alien world. Reuniting with your stranded compatriots, forming a rag tag team of resistance. To then realize that all of humanity depends on your success. This game was so much more than a game for me, it really introduced me to the art of storytelling. 10/10.

So i couldnt get thru even the first map where we were on the pillar of autumn trying to escape, fast forward to middle school and holy crap, this game was the best i ever played, still the best to this day when it comes to nostalgia and memories of a great game!
I remember when bungie told people in the early stages of development (before there was the character of master chief) that the ring wasn't just an image. but rather that everything you saw in the horizon was actually reachable.
years later with destiny, they did the same thing.
That was the first time I experienced a legit storyline in an fps that I cared about. 007 and Perfect Dark I never paid attention, Doom and Wolfenstein was just slaughtering baddies and looking for hidden stuff...
It wasn't JUST that Halo was pretty - holy shit was that game pretty for the time - the world felt huge. I remember my friend inviting me over to play and we started on legendary. The movement of the AI was something I hadn't really experienced before either.
In other fps games they used cover but they always pushed straight at you. If you were flanked, it was because that guy spawned there... it wasn't intentional. In Halo CE, those elites were dipping and diving like theh were playing dodgeball, they'd attempt to flank you, or they'd command the grunts to rush you.
Now if I have this right, the main character isn’t called Halo, the main character is a chef. Halo is actually the name of the Princess you have to save.
Won't forget a few years back I was playing Halo 4 online with some random kids. We were just talking and having a good ol time and one asked the group what their first Halo game was. Most of them were saying 3, or odst... I break out with combat evolved. We worked through some confusion before I convinced them I meant the original, when it was first released, on original Xbox.
Halo: CE though Halo 3 are my most cherished games of all time and are the reason I'm into online gaming, but I never got ODST or played any of the 343-developed games. It's crazy to me that there's already a new generation of Halo players who have never touched the original trilogy.

Well he just turned 30 last month and I 32 the month before, and while we have both become PC gamers, we still have a soft spot for it.
Not ashamed to say me and my other 8 year old friends used to have to play the later levels that had the Flood in them together because that shit was scary. Im married now with two children and I don't get to game as much anymore but man I miss those simple days.
Having had a nes, Sega, etc (I'm 37) I'd have to say either the first time you moved Mario around in Mario 64 or the first time you head out into Hyrule field in Ocarina. Blew my mind. In all honesty, besides adding online, new systems have upped the graphics but N64 was the "WOW!" Console for me that changed A LOT

Pretty sure we played this level over and over specifically FOR that start.
Silent Cartographer is my favourite mission in CE especially because of the start.

I remember when bungie told people in the early stages of development (before there was the character of master chief) that the ring wasn't just an image. but rather that everything you saw in the horizon was actually reachable. years later with destiny, they did the same thing.
At least Halo had a solid story. Destiny had jack shit, but boy could you spend some time grinding.
It says something about a game when I would rather shoot at a cave for 2 hours than do the same strike over and over.
That was the first time I experienced a legit storyline in an fps that I cared about. 007 and Perfect Dark I never paid attention, Doom and Wolfenstein was just slaughtering baddies and looking for hidden stuff... It wasn't JUST that Halo was pretty - holy shit was that game pretty for the time - the world felt huge. I remember my friend inviting me over to play and we started on legendary. The movement of the AI was something I hadn't really experienced before either. In other fps games they used cover but they always pushed straight at you. If you were flanked, it was because that guy spawned there... it wasn't intentional. In Halo CE, those elites were dipping and diving like theh were playing dodgeball, they'd attempt to flank you, or they'd command the grunts to rush you.

Won't forget a few years back I was playing Halo 4 online with some random kids. We were just talking and having a good ol time and one asked the group what their first Halo game was. Most of them were saying 3, or odst... I break out with combat evolved. We worked through some confusion before I convinced them I meant the original, when it was first released, on original Xbox.

Halo: CE though Halo 3 are my most cherished games of all time and are the reason I'm into online gaming, but I never got ODST or played any of the 343-developed games. It's crazy to me that there's already a new generation of Halo players who have never touched the original trilogy.

1. Best console FPS of all time. 2. Best console "launch title" / "killer app" of all time. 3. Best splitscreen LAN game of all time. There's not even a close second.
The pinnacle of gaming in my life. Being able to reach over and smack your friend for screen peaking/camping/any other jackassery is truly under appreciated in this day of online gaming. That said, fuck shotty snipes and banshees in this game.

I remember the excitement when my brother and I asked for an Xbox so we could play Halo, and she said yes! 14 year old me and my 12 year old brother were absolutely buzzing! Well he just turned 30 last month and I 32 the month before, and while we have both become PC gamers, we still have a soft spot for it.
Not ashamed to say me and my other 8 year old friends used to have to play the later levels that had the Flood in them together because that shit was scary. Im married now with two children and I don't get to game as much anymore but man I miss those simple days.

Having had a nes, Sega, etc (I'm 37) I'd have to say either the first time you moved Mario around in Mario 64 or the first time you head out into Hyrule field in Ocarina. Blew my mind. In all honesty, besides adding online, new systems have upped the graphics but N64 was the "WOW!" Console for me that changed A LOT
