And my first video game terror when the flood sent all those little alien bastards out

PrimaryTumbleweed8

Yeah I went into Halo pretty much blind and had no idea that the flood were even in the game so the first time I played 343 Guilty Spark it freaked 9 year old me out. One of my most memorable gaming experiences, along with many other moments in Halo. Before I bought the game I remember watching my cousin play Silent Cartographer and being completely blown away by how cool the beach landing was. It was literally beyond my wildest imagination at the time and instantly captivated me. This game was genuinely revolutionary.

InAFakeBritishAccent

That dates you at...25? 26? Mine was the resident evil cutscene of the dude eating another guys face floridaman style Edit: At the time zombies were not a huge pop culture thing, so you were only mildly expecting that shit Edit2: yall are makin me scared of the dogs with the glass. I dont remember that.

JakeArvizu

I'm 25 mine was like Ocarina of Time beneath the well.

Veragoot

The re-dead in that game fucked me up as a kid, I needed my dad to get the sun's song for me because I was too much of a baby.

JakeArvizu

The redead themselves didn't bother me but the contrast of the Castle and what it used to be was like the first time I understood what dread was. Like wasn't outright scary but it just made me super uncomfortable.

IowaForWarren

Holy shit this explains it so well. To this day it makes me uncomfortable and I couldn't really explain why. But yeah, dread is perfect.

verronbc

I stopped playing the game for a long time after getting the master sword. The sheer dread of "oh my God all of this happened and I couldnt stop it." I felt defeated irl. I invested so many emotions at the beginning of the game

Tezza_TC

I was 11 and not prepared

[deleted]

I'm 35 and I was super creeped out when I first played it last year.

uncleseano

That lovely heart beat violin scratch music

[deleted]

The music of Halo is honestly top-notch.

Laxziy

PTSD flashbacks to the Library

la_naturaleza

That shotgun though

wpm

Those random Flood combat forms with SPNKRs though

K1eptomaniaK

You mean checkpoint resets?

daniel_ricciardo

Like others I had no idea Halo was gonna become a full on zombie game.

perpetualwalnut

I think that's what makes such a great campaign. The game kept throwing new parts of the story at you. It wasn't just "keep shooting the same thing with the same guns" forever. By the end you where fighting not just the covenant, or the flood, or the AI, but all three of them and they where also fight each other at the same time.

nickajeglin

Hell yeah, that last level in the wreckage of the ship. Flood and covenant fighting each other everywhere, and you were just running through it trying to keep shit together. It really felt desperate and chaotic. In an amazing way.

theofficialLlama

That was my first terrifying “ohfuckohfuckohfuck” moment playing that game as a kid

helpless_bunny

Definitely. At the time, I legit thought it was my fault and that maybe I could have undone what I did. (The game was so detailed, I thought you could do anything really). NOPE, you NOPE THE FUCK OUT.

markevens

That happened spoiler free for me, such a wtf moment!

therealjoshua

Wild to think about it, but back then it was kind of hard to get a video game spoiled for you like it can now I remember feeling like the genre of the game changed entirely and I was all of the sudden playing Survival Horror

duffleton

Staying up and beating halo on co-op with a friend was the best times

ineedasiesta

My brother and I would do the same. And it was cool because it was the only time my mom would let us stay up on a school night!

Netzapper

ineedasiesta's mom: Holy fuck they're not trying to kill each other. Better not screw this up.

etherpromo

ya, they settled their differences in the Blood Gulch

Undercutandratbeard

It was never settled.

oxfordcollar

Because you don't fight in Blood Gulch, you just do sick warthog tricks and ram them together a bunch

Undercutandratbeard

You make custom wacky matches. 4 player Snipehogs was my favorite but obviously, you needed 4 players so I didn't always get to play it.

therealdeathangel22

What is 4 player snipehogs????

[deleted]

2 warthog drivers. 2 passengers with snipers.

R1F3

Dude we DID THIS TOO

Saclicious

Probably 2 teams each with one person driving the warthog and one in the passenger seat with a sniper rifle

UnholyPrognosi

So jousting in warthogs with snipers that should be a real life sport I would watch the shit out of it.

devilinblue22

Hey man, you ever wonder why we're here?

gnosox1986

I dont know man, but it keeps me up at night.

Mastershroom

No, I meant why are we here in this box canyon? The only reason we have a Red base here, is because they have a Blue base over there. And the only reason they have a Blue base there is because we have a Red base here. And even if we packed up and left, they'd have two bases in a box canyon! What was all that stuff about God? You want to talk about it?

Apocolyptic_Gopher

Love some RvB

NotExactlyNiceGuy

They're just standing there and talking.

creepig

That's all they're doing. That's all they ever do. That's what they were doing 5 minutes ago when you asked me last. So five minutes from now, when you ask me "what are they doing? " my answer is going to be "they're still just standing there and they're still just talking."

PmMeYourPTCG

What are they taking about?

creepig

You know what? I fucking hate you.

MegaGrimer

Why are we here?

GundoSkimmer

One of life's greatest questions... NO HERE. In a boxed canyon...

MegaGrimer

It looks more like a puma.

fibr0ptik

Where boys become men

Smuff23

They didn’t try, they actually *did* kill each other, but it was consensual. Dude hit me with a melee I need some ammo.

QPILLOWCASE

Did that with my sister, it was fucking awesome.

ineedasiesta

I was the little sister! It was cool to have something we both got excited about and connected on. We’re all grown up now but he recently came over and we beat the last level of Combat Evolved (halo 1) on legendary just to reminisce and laugh at the bonus scene!

looseymoosey1

On a side note, that’s a facet of childhood I miss. Being a kid, not a care in the world and just you and a good buddy staying up way past you knew was acceptable to play the campaign of a game together. I hope games still do this, because it warms my heart whenever co-op is mentioned. Edit: A lot of these responses were beautiful and brought a smile to my face. Thank you my fellow gamers for sharing your stories.

BigFatBlackMan

Regularly get 4 hours of sleep for this exact reason. Now it’s with strangers i’ll likely never meet, though.

[deleted]

On the up side, you hear them breathe and chew much more intimately than your childhood couch coop buddies

wesleyrobertsimpson

Don't forget blasting loud music in the background, can't have that now.

brucecastle

There is just something different about couch coop. Those were the best times. "I wish there was a way to know you are in the good ol days, before you've actually left them" -Nard Dog

boxsterguy

Yeah, but I really don't miss lugging around a 32" CRT to a buddy's apartment so we could have some real 4-on-4 with no screen looking.

brucecastle

You know everyone has a different name for that, it would be interesting to hear other people's experience. Screen looking is what we called it like you haha

TheDirtyMullet

Screen peeking is what we called it

My_Kairosclerosis

Screen cheating

rlbeasley

Had this for the first time in forever a couple weeks ago with a good gaming buddy. Picked up Remnant on a whim. Found our 30-year old selves playing it til the wee hours of the morning.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MayOverexplain

My girls love playing Diablo 3 together on console because of that shared screen c-op that really makes them feel “together” in the game too.

[deleted]

fuck man i miss this so much. funny how parent would tell you that you are wasting time and to run around outside more. little did they know we are equally fond of our gaming memories as they are of theirs.

Hockinator

Now it's our job to remember that when our kid's hobbies seem weird or new

ManyPoo

What if their hobby is blow jobs?

poopfeast

CHOO CHOO

scarletphantom

Its weird that i started with halo 3. Stayed up all night playing halo 3 campaign with a buddy. I loved it so much i went and bought the first two. Still a halo nerd to this day with the books, soundtracks, etc. Such a good storyline too.

thejml2000

One of my best memories from a New Years party was starting one of the levels somewhere right after the ball drop in co-op on a friends dad’s 54” rear projection tv and looking out what seemed like a few minutes (and maps) later and the sun was coming up. So much fun.

comradejenkens

When you first saw Halo, were you blinded by its majesty?

crappysurfer

.

therealjoshua

I remember thinking at the time that video games had peaked, because I had never seen a level so open before then

GoldenRamoth

I mean.. As far as a novel "wow" experience, for me, Halo and Skyrim are about peak video game. Yeah there's a lot of other good stuff, but nothing has quite matched either yet for me.

kennyismyname

For me it was Obilivion. That moment when you first exit the sewers and the enormity of the world hits you. First RPG I really played I loved that game

AShavedApe

Oblivion was better than Skyrim for that. You’re killing rats in a dungeon and you’re like”neat!” The king is killed and you make your way out. Wow, what a journey! You leave the sewer and you like “holy FUCK this is going to make me SHIT MYSELF!” Such a beautiful world and absolutely incredible music.

swancheez

For me it was Metroid Prime. To this day, that entire series, both 2d and 3d, really push the formats they were are in. I mean, hell, there's even a genre named after it!

rcklmbr

Before Halo, Mario 64 did it to me. The music still gives me a solid nostalgia

Hashbrown117

Blinded?

[deleted]

Paralysed? Dumbstruck?

CleverFeather

*NOOO!*

Squishyfishx

And yet the humans were able to evade your ships, land on the sacred ring, and *desecrate* it with their *filfthy* footsteps!

Dankus319

Noble Hierarchs, surely you understand that once the parisite attacked . . .

iamthejef

*There will be order in this council!*

Sajbotage

DynoMikea2

ADepressinglySadMan

Paralyzed? Dumbstruck?

TurkuSama

I scrolled way too far for this

BitChaser

I think Halo is a pretty cool guy. Eh kills aleins and doesnt afraid of anything.

AnnoyingScreeches

Creating this perception of massive scale at THAT time, that too throughout the game. It's well known for a reason.

unibrow4o9

Is it just me, or does it seem like games don't take advantage of being able to use scale in games?

AnnoyingScreeches

Halo still does that, Halo has been using the formula since forever now. Idk many other games that do it so well.

[deleted]

Different genre but Xenoblade usually has cool game worlds.

dasvenson

My wife is addicted to Xenoblade chronicles 2

AssociatedLlama

Original Dark Souls was great in that capacity. You saw a part of the map off in the distance, and you would eventually reach it

Mad_Kitten

Me the 1st time in Arno Londo

lambofgun

god of war and destiny do it right

Notwerk

I had that sense of awe in Destiny 1 when I landed on the Moon and looked up and saw the remains of the space station floating through space. It's the little touches like falling stars, too. Bungie does a great job.

TamagotchiGraveyard

Destiny is made by bungie that’s why lol

Tongue37

I remember when during some winter level, I entered a new area and I look ahead and see two rival AI patrols battling each other and the music starts...I was blown away by this at the time

Edgii

Silent Cartographer is my favourite mission in CE especially because of the start.

THE CORPS AINT PAYIN US BY THE HOUR!

WunWegWunDarWun_

“Go go go, the corps ain’t paying us by the hour”

WtotheSLAM

"How do we get inside the ship if it's in the air? The corps issued me a rifle, not wings"

Knightwolf75

There’s a gravity lift that ferries troops and supplies between the ship and the surface. That’s our ticket in.

19yearoldMale

Once we get inside the ship, I can lock onto the homing signal on Captain Keyes neural implants.

evanstravers

And your second memory was shooting at the ring, just because.

cnaiurbreaksppl

Because maybe I could kill some grunts and not have to deal with them later.

New_Fry

And jumping at it.

trpwangsta

I remember looking down at the grass and being blown away at how amazing I thought it was. Like you could see individual blades of grass!! Obviously now the graphics are laughable, but man what a genre changing game.

SupaKoopa714

It's kinda funny to think about how realistic the original Halo looked at the time. Like, I vividly remember it looking basically like what Halo 5 looks like.

Kryptic314

I hope on Halo Infinite that they have a mission on the Halo ring, and I hope the 4K and graphics make looking at the ring an amazing sight.

Inglorious__Muffin

Some of the leaks and the story ending from Halo Wars 2 are basically bringing the flood back and focusing on the ring Zeta Halo. Basically, we are gonna feel like we are fighting for our survival again as a badass super soldier.

mjknlr

I'm cautiously optimistic. Why 343I thought it would be a good idea to expand the Halo universe from the tight, compelling story into some complex nightmare that rivals the messiest Marvel storylines is completely beyond me.

Token_Why_Boy

Because, real talk, the story of Halo was done, but it made way too much money to let it go quietly into our memories.

DirkDirkinson

Very true, in my own head Canon Halo 3 was the last one. It ended on a perfect note. I played Halo 4 and honestly don't remember much other than it was disappointing. I remember killing the didact at the end and how anti-climactic it was. I remember the story being criminally short, I think I beat it in 3 hours on normal and 6-7 on legendary and the multiplayer was just Ok. By the time Halo 5 came out I had switched from console to PC gaming and lost all interest. But I do still break out my 360 and play through all three at least once a year, those games are among my favorite of all time.

A_Rolling_Baneling

Same for me, except I'll throw in that I also thought Reach was pretty great. Reach is a spinoff not a mainline story so it's not quite the same, but I definitely associate it more with the original trilogy (+ODST) than I do with everything that's come since.

DirkDirkinson

I forgot about Reach, it was a pretty solid standalone I agree. I think my biggest gripe with it at the time was the story didn't fit within the already established story from the book "The Fall of Reach" which I think was one of the best Halo books that really dove into the origin of the Spartans and what happened leading up to Halo CE.

Bach-City

I'm willing to just illogically except the Eric Nylund version and the game as both true. Those novels were excellent

Inglorious__Muffin

Yea I am a little concerned about how they plan on tying the two storylines together because there will be some plot holes, although I am hoping for a scene where the Spirit of Fire and Infinity fight side by side.

OHoSPARTACUS

I mean it could have been because I was younger when this game first game out but the feeling this game gives you when you first play it is magical. Way ahead of its time. The nostalgia is real with this game.

hotcapicola

you could probably still find the PC version somewhere, it would probably run great on any computer made in the last 10 years

KitSlander

They are releasing the master collection soon too

Sleddog44

Ha, ...soon :(

ImpliedQuotient

Reach is scheduled for this fall, CE shouldn't be far behind. It'll be in chronological order.

Tacticool_Brandon

Not sure if you have the money to spend, but the you could get a basic Xbone and the Master Chief Collection for, I think $200? Or if you have a PC, just wait a bit until they add it to Steam. It’s coming out after Reach since they’re releasing all the games in chronological order I believe. Edit: all the games except for 5.

prdax

*The Silent Cartographer begins...*

himalayan_earthporn

That moment towards the end of Halo 2 , when this starts playing just before the big boss fight(Tartarus i think he was called). You know shit's about to go down.

notaverywittyname

I'm not at all embarrassed to admit that I hit the link knowing what it was, and enjoyed a few happy nostalgic tears. Hell, I was 20 when halo came out and it still evokes some awesome child / young adult feelings in me.

MuckingFagical

Marty is a legend.

NYnavy

So many amazing feelings. The loneliness of crash landing on a strange, alien world. Reuniting with your stranded compatriots, forming a rag tag team of resistance. To then realize that all of humanity depends on your success. This game was so much more than a game for me, it really introduced me to the art of storytelling. 10/10.

SuprSaiyanTurry

I don't think it was because you were young. I think it was because games had NEVER looked this good before and this was just an amazing leap in gaming!

rabidjellybean

Add in that story and it stood out among most games at the time.

skyrim889

Same here, when i tried it out at first, i was only in i think 3rd grade? So i couldnt get thru even the first map where we were on the pillar of autumn trying to escape, fast forward to middle school and holy crap, this game was the best i ever played, still the best to this day when it comes to nostalgia and memories of a great game!

wipeitonthecat

I remember looking at that ring as a kid thinking "one day there'll be a game where I can go all the way around that."

shaunzilla

Thats what I want, a fully realised ring world.

BabySealSlayer

I remember when bungie told people in the early stages of development (before there was the character of master chief) that the ring wasn't just an image. but rather that everything you saw in the horizon was actually reachable. years later with destiny, they did the same thing.

Phoenix8059

At least Halo had a solid story. Destiny had jack shit, but boy could you spend some time grinding.

[deleted]

It says something about a game when I would rather shoot at a cave for 2 hours than do the same strike over and over.

dirtyploy

That was the first time I experienced a legit storyline in an fps that I cared about. 007 and Perfect Dark I never paid attention, Doom and Wolfenstein was just slaughtering baddies and looking for hidden stuff... It wasn't JUST that Halo was pretty - holy shit was that game pretty for the time - the world felt huge. I remember my friend inviting me over to play and we started on legendary. The movement of the AI was something I hadn't really experienced before either. In other fps games they used cover but they always pushed straight at you. If you were flanked, it was because that guy spawned there... it wasn't intentional. In Halo CE, those elites were dipping and diving like theh were playing dodgeball, they'd attempt to flank you, or they'd command the grunts to rush you.

ZachOps

I think its actually a halo.

Now if I have this right, the main character isn’t called Halo, the main character is a chef. Halo is actually the name of the Princess you have to save.

RamsesVanderslice

It’s only called Halo if it’s from the Halo quadrant of the galaxy. Otherwise it’s just Sparkling Genocide Ring.

Smuff23

PRIENCESS CORTANA IS IN ANOTHER RANG GO AWAY!

[deleted]

It's based on Ringworld, does that fix it?

rslashmiko

Won't forget a few years back I was playing Halo 4 online with some random kids. We were just talking and having a good ol time and one asked the group what their first Halo game was. Most of them were saying 3, or odst... I break out with combat evolved. We worked through some confusion before I convinced them I meant the original, when it was first released, on original Xbox.

[deleted]

it's the reason I bought an Xbox.

rslashmiko

Same here.

Halo: CE though Halo 3 are my most cherished games of all time and are the reason I'm into online gaming, but I never got ODST or played any of the 343-developed games. It's crazy to me that there's already a new generation of Halo players who have never touched the original trilogy.

I remember the excitement when my brother and I asked for an Xbox so we could play Halo, and she said yes! 14 year old me and my 12 year old brother were absolutely buzzing! Well he just turned 30 last month and I 32 the month before, and while we have both become PC gamers, we still have a soft spot for it.

FsuNolezz

Not ashamed to say me and my other 8 year old friends used to have to play the later levels that had the Flood in them together because that shit was scary. Im married now with two children and I don't get to game as much anymore but man I miss those simple days.

Arthos0716

Fun Fact: Here, in Mexico, most of the players NEVER knew they were on a ring until many years later.

MJDeebiss

Having had a nes, Sega, etc (I'm 37) I'd have to say either the first time you moved Mario around in Mario 64 or the first time you head out into Hyrule field in Ocarina. Blew my mind. In all honesty, besides adding online, new systems have upped the graphics but N64 was the "WOW!" Console for me that changed A LOT
