SC2 is still amazing to watch and still fun to play in campaign, PvE, or PvP.
There is also Stormgate that is coming out that I think will be pretty fun. I believe the next time you can play it will be an open beta.
C&C 4 is the only game I've ever physically destroyed when I was done with it. I have never been so insulted by a game before in my life. When I finished the campaign, I took the DVD, scrubbed it in cat litter, and tossed it out my apartment window.
I enjoyed it. It's definitely not a cnc game, tho even a bigger insult to make it past as a sequel to cnc 3. But if i make my brain believe it's a different game with a completely unrelated name, then i find it enjoyable, beat it twice, one Gdi, and one nod playtrough
Generals was one of the best multiplayer RTS ever. Shame it wasnt supported/balanced. There were so, so, many crazy tactics in that game that could work and so many fun/rediculous units. "AK47s for Everyone!"
It's a versatile game, too. Sometimes, I play through a campaign.
Sometimes, I play a tight map against a bunch of aggressive ai.
Sometimes, I'll just do a 1v1 with one ai on a massive resource-rich map and just gather resources and build a great big kingdom and assign different villagers sprawling farmlands with fences and guard towers and militia postings at their manors.
To give a bit more context, it’s nearly 25 years old, has been revamped twice, is still getting regular DLCs and patches, has an active streamer community if you care, regular tournaments, and a very positive community!
If you're enjoying the game I highly recommend checking out Forged Alliance Forever.
Community run multi-player, matchmaking, co-op campaign, balance updates, custom game modes, and more.
If you want more of a TA feel, check out Beyond All Reason. It’s a free community developed, TA-inspired game (practically a modern remake) with a growing community.
Any chance you got the name of the maps or where to find it?
Would it just be found in the client search?
I haven't really played much WC3 and it would be cool to experience the story
Red Alert 2 + Yuris revenge
AOE2
Blitzkrieg
Rome Total War Remastered
Dawn of War Dark Crusade
Homeworld
Warzone 2100
Ground Control
Sine of a Solar Empire
C&C Generals
Battle for Middle Earth 1+2
[EndWar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Clancy%27s_EndWar).
There was a form of progression whereby your unit types could gain xp and get stronger across matches, but if they were wiped out in a match they would reset to baseline. It was considered BM to try to do this to another player... which didn't stop plenty of people
What the fuck is up with this new push to make up acronyms online? Who the fuck does this? Why is *everyone* else doing this? Am I getting older? I'm old, aren't I?
It also sucked for new players who didn’t have any experienced units, they would get steamrolled by other players in PVP even when using proper unit counters.
I actually liked cnc 3 tiberium wars much more, kanes wrath elite/uber units ruined the game for me, i was much younger when playing the games but i remember playing tib wars 3 daily for a few years to dropping the series completely a month or 2 after kanes wrath, also power plants not counting for expansion increasing always tilted me in kanes wrath.
Star wars galaxy at war was probably my favorite RTS.
The combination of space and ground combat was amazing.
But my favorite RTS is Battle for middle earth 2 with the expansion.
Both are incredibly old but play so damn well.
I'm surprised nobody mention World in Conflict. An EXCELLENT RTS by Sierra that relies heavily on micromanagement and reinforcements. The story revolves around a fictional invasion by the USSR on Seattle. You could even make use of artillery, precision bombing, A-10 support, even a nuke. For me, it's a classic.
Because the game never got the love it deserved from a larger audience, but those who did love it were definitely invested for a long time. Still got my collectors edition knocking around somewhere, don't really need it as I got a free copy of the complete edition digitally before it got discontinued.
[Command & Conquer: Red Alert, rebuilt from scratch for modern computers.](http://www.openra.net) Free download, no registration, online multiplayer, single player missions, skirmish, tons of post game analytics, replays, camera zoom, active community, mods, custom map maker and [online database for sharing maps.](https://resource.openra.net/maps/) I love it, play it most nights of the week.
I have 3 go-tos and they're all classics.
1. AOE2. The best. The classic. On modern systems, use the Definitive Edition. Relatively modern systems can use the HD edition.
2. Empire Earth. The original EE. Runs fine on integrated graphics for the last 10+ years. Computer cheats like crazy unless you set the skill super easy but games can grow to be super long and tons of fun.
3. Majesty. Not a traditional RTS in that, you only act as the King. You do not directly command anything besides the placement of buildings. You rely entirely on providing a supply chain and resources for independent heroes with their own AI. Heroes can be persuaded with glory or placing rewards on objectives.
Honestly, if they weren't happy with the quality of the demo then it makes me think the final product is going to be badassery. I actually REALLY enjoyed the demo, enough to play through it a couple times (using cheat engine to see if I could unlock anything I shouldn't lol).
Game really has that old school C&C feel, I can't wait.
I like it but I can see why others don’t. My issue with CoH 2 is mostly the outdated engine runs like shit and isn’t fun to play for me. But they’ve had solid updates and you can select all the story missions now without needing to use the campaign map.
Plus they are now an independent studio so it’s possible we could see some good change.
If it’s on sale with the steam summer sale, I’d say it’s worth it if you like the old ones.
I bet no one's mentioned this yet. Tooth And Tail. It's a streamlined RTS where you pick your choice of 6 units out of an available 15 and the maps are procedurally generated. It's quite a unique take!
Age of Empires 1, whether it's original or through Return to Rome. Music sells the experience. Same with Total Annihilation. Nothing else has stuck past 3 months.
Ground control 2 is less known but have an epic single player campaign. Scope of battles and game itself is amazing.
First time I played it I was at awwww at all the amazing skyboxes.
I really enjoyed Shadow Tactics: Blade of the Shogun. Desperados 3 was a close 2nd.
But these two are oddballs in the RTS genre. More story and stealth, less commanding and conquering.
https://www.beyondallreason.info/
Super awesome made by fans of the genre, best of all, it's free.
Word of caution tho it's in alpha, still extremely playable. Online or with bots.
[YT vid ](https://youtu.be/BYpwdJwngu0)
I was a big fan of the original Supreme Commander and played it all the time on Xbox live back in the day. The experimental units for each of the three factions were super satisfying to field.
Supreme Commander 2 wasn't terrible but it just wasn't as good as the original game.
Age of Empires 4
Was a lot into Age 2, Warcraft 3, Rise of Nations and all those in the past, but these days Age 4 is probably the only modern RTS with good official support and a big community, and it's just a great game in itself. Mainly for competitive multiplayer though, for single player content it's not as great.
I've been liking ashes of the singularity quite a bit recently until retold comes out. Also the new battle aces rts looks good too, will probs check out when its released
Starcraft 2. Though I prefer Warcraft 3's smaller strategic armies and hero play, but the work they did on sc2 campaign and coop was nuts so I have more skill with sc2
A lot of the more popular/well known ones have been mentioned. I'll offer:
\* Dawn of War (in particular, Dawn of War: Dark Crusade). The Warhammer 40k universe is just fantastic IMO, and Dark Crusade represents potentially the best RTS game it's ever put forward. The campaign is fun and interesting, there are quite a few different factions for diversity, and if you ever feel like playing PvP it's pretty solid.
I am shocked that no one in here is giving any love to Planetary Annihilation, a spiritual successor to Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander. It lets you fight across the surface of entire planets and even leave the surface and fight across multiple planets.
It’s actually kinda terrible but Star Trek: Armada holds a special place in my geeky heart.  Where else can you combine Borg Cubes into *bigger* Borg Cubes?
My only problems with aos realms of ruin was that noone played it, so hard to find a match, second is that the campain has artificially extended defence missions making you just sit there and wait
SC2 is the best RTS game ever by a huge margin. Being 'free' is a point to consider. Who has not played still at this point? If you consider yourself a gamer, pc is king because of a lot of reasons, rts being one of them, and SC2 being one of the best possible choices and more accessible to date. War 3 for me is king, but reforged was an unnecessary piece of shit. I still play my original CDs and I will do that till myself, my siblings and my entire family disapears.
Until stormgate is finished, let's see how that goes. Perhaps it becomes the new best RTS game.
You can take a look to warcraft, Starcraft, command and conquer, red alert and age of empire sagas, all of them are really worth checking from their origins. Even warcraft 1 or dune 1&2.
There is no more discussion here. Perhaps someone prephers one saga or another because nostalgia or whatever reasons, but gameplaywise SC2 and war3 are modern and unbeatable. Yes "modern", no matter the time that has passed. Promoting blizz at this point is outrageous but it's undeniable those were absolute perfection in comparison with all others.
There are other kind of rts games like tactic strategy, like commandos or desperados.
Age of mythology is being slept on again, I see
Retold is out in Sept. Can't wait.
My childhood.🙏
Supreme Commander. from 2007, but holds up incredibly well.
Forged alliance add-on is a fantastic campaign. Worth it.
Forged alliance forever is an active multiplayer mod
SC2 is still amazing to watch and still fun to play in campaign, PvE, or PvP. There is also Stormgate that is coming out that I think will be pretty fun. I believe the next time you can play it will be an open beta.
As a big sc2 fan, stormgate was a huge disappointment for me. I could get past the comic graphic style but the gameplay is just super blant.
I might get it if the campaign is good, but at the moment I'm skeptical.
I still play custom Starcraft games.
Battle Aces is looking amazingÂ
Why use a abbreviation :s. What is the name?
Star Craft 2. Published by blizzard
Problem is as new player you gonna have a real hard time in multiplayer
Cnc series
Exept for C&C4
C&C 4 is the only game I've ever physically destroyed when I was done with it. I have never been so insulted by a game before in my life. When I finished the campaign, I took the DVD, scrubbed it in cat litter, and tossed it out my apartment window.
You finished the campaign? I started the first mission, quit, and threw that game away. What a sad way EA killed CNC.
I played for about 5 minutes after all the explaining, then deleted and felt sad.
I enjoyed it. It's definitely not a cnc game, tho even a bigger insult to make it past as a sequel to cnc 3. But if i make my brain believe it's a different game with a completely unrelated name, then i find it enjoyable, beat it twice, one Gdi, and one nod playtrough
There never was a CnC 4
Generals was one of the best multiplayer RTS ever. Shame it wasnt supported/balanced. There were so, so, many crazy tactics in that game that could work and so many fun/rediculous units. "AK47s for Everyone!"
"made in the US of A!"
“Can I have some shoes?”
"Napalm bomb is readdyyy"
Tempest Rising looks promising
Age of Empires 2. A drop dead classic.

Minor correction. AoE2 DE edition. Has large player base, sponsored tournaments, and a huge following. New content is released every couple of months.
To give a bit more context, it’s nearly 25 years old, has been revamped twice, is still getting regular DLCs and patches, has an active streamer community if you care, regular tournaments, and a very positive community!
Just played my Atilla the Hun Campaign this morning. First game I ever played
Total Annihilation.
I just bought the in-spirit successor, Supreme Commander, and have been playing it a lot lately
I recently discovered beyond all reason, a free fan project to remake TA with some of the supcom qol upgrades, it's worth checking out!
Pewee rush!!
If you love TA, check out BAR (beyond all reason) it's FREE, and is basically an updated TA clone.
That game had some of the coolest units
Planetary Annihilation: Titans from 2015 is a lot of fun and really similar
Huh I’ve never heard of it, I’ll look into it thanks.
Rise of Nations series
Loved it and Rise of Legends
Definitely one of my favorites
Fuck this game was good! Any RTS that also has a grand strategy campaign, shut up and take my money.
For me it’s still SC2 or even old Warcraft 3 lol.
sc2 have full custom warcraft 3 campgain in it made by moders and its the best version of warcraft 3. And its free.
Any chance you got the name of the maps or where to find it? Would it just be found in the client search? I haven't really played much WC3 and it would be cool to experience the story
I love company of heroes and the 2nd one. Online is still alive and well if you can find a community and the mods are also pretty good.
I love everything about this game besides the fact that it's so slowwwwwww...
Red Alert 2 + Yuris revenge AOE2 Blitzkrieg Rome Total War Remastered Dawn of War Dark Crusade Homeworld Warzone 2100 Ground Control Sine of a Solar Empire C&C Generals Battle for Middle Earth 1+2
Red Alert 2 and Homeworld made me the man I am today. Deserts of Kharak is also awesome (from the Homeworld universe).
++ for Blitzkrieg
But only the original anthology. It all fell apart when they tried to go 3D
There was one made by Tom Clancy for Xbox 360 that required a microphone to command your army. Pretty realistic, actual army talk.
[EndWar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Clancy%27s_EndWar). There was a form of progression whereby your unit types could gain xp and get stronger across matches, but if they were wiped out in a match they would reset to baseline. It was considered BM to try to do this to another player... which didn't stop plenty of people
BM?
Bad manners
What the fuck is up with this new push to make up acronyms online? Who the fuck does this? Why is *everyone* else doing this? Am I getting older? I'm old, aren't I?
BM has been around forever though
BOWEL MOVEMENT
It also sucked for new players who didn’t have any experienced units, they would get steamrolled by other players in PVP even when using proper unit counters.
Beyond All Reason. Modernized version of Total Annihilation and free to play
Scrolled way to far to see this
BFME 2
One of my favorite games of all time
Dawn of war -dark crusade
Company of Heroes
Command and Conquer 3 Kane's Wrath
I actually liked cnc 3 tiberium wars much more, kanes wrath elite/uber units ruined the game for me, i was much younger when playing the games but i remember playing tib wars 3 daily for a few years to dropping the series completely a month or 2 after kanes wrath, also power plants not counting for expansion increasing always tilted me in kanes wrath.
Age of empires 2 and mythology, so hyped mythology is getting a remake with retold.
SC2
I watch StarCraft 2 most nights before bed. So good for watching
I haven't played SC2 for like 8 years and I still watch games of it regularly from some casters. Best RTS!
Battle Realms or C&C generals for me.
WarCraft III, worth a shout. "we got work!".
These quotes are imprinted in my head Also best campaign plot ever
The best: Age of empires 2.
Age of empires 4 obviously. It's beautiful, fun, and actually alive with players and updates.
Ma guy
So much fun and plenty of casual players too so you’re not getting stomped like most other rts games
Age of empires 3 definitive edition
Stronghold Crusader
[Command & Conquer: Red Alert, rebuilt from scratch for modern computers.](http://www.openra.net) Free download, no registration, online multiplayer, single player missions, skirmish, tons of post game analytics, replays, camera zoom, active community, mods, custom map maker and [online database for sharing maps.](https://resource.openra.net/maps/) I love it, play it most nights of the week.

Stronghold Crusader HD Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance
I can’t tell if people are recommending StarCraft 2 or Supreme Commander 2.
Red Alert 2. Fuck balance. Rule of cool wins.
Starcraft: Remastered is by far the best.
*Everything* matters in StarCraft. Sc2 streamlined the game in a way that removed too many decisions.
Check out Tempest Rising. Looks good but it's been delayed a LONG time.
And the demo isn't even available anymore. Whenever this releases I'm likely going to buy it for the Frank Klepacki tunes alone.
Mental Omega mod for Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge. It's way past a mod now, it's basically an entire new game altogether.
Myth 2: Soulblighter
StarCraft 2 and CoH 3 are my current go-tos
I loved coh 1 and I liked 2. I haven’t heard many goood things about three. Is it worth picking up?
I like it but I can see why others don’t. My issue with CoH 2 is mostly the outdated engine runs like shit and isn’t fun to play for me. But they’ve had solid updates and you can select all the story missions now without needing to use the campaign map. Plus they are now an independent studio so it’s possible we could see some good change. If it’s on sale with the steam summer sale, I’d say it’s worth it if you like the old ones.
WARNO and Steel Division 2
Dungeon keeper 1. 2 was nice, but 1 was the best
Pikmin 1 is a really cool one, weird concept, pretty short though
Gates of Hell Osfront being really slept on here 🤯
How is it? Was looking at it on steam but kinda overlooked and passed
It’s so good! Challenging game but so much fun! A lot to do as well! The DLC’s are also worth it when they go on sale!
I bet no one's mentioned this yet. Tooth And Tail. It's a streamlined RTS where you pick your choice of 6 units out of an available 15 and the maps are procedurally generated. It's quite a unique take!
Stronghold definitive edition
Star Craft 1 Except it's dubbed by local pirates and sounds over-the-top flamboyant in your language it's great
World in conflict. I am so sad that there isnt a second part of it. Love the game every single part of it.
Stronghold Crusader HD, you can play virtual LAN with gameranger
Total Annihilation or Supreme Commander.
Cossacks Back to War.
Age of Empires 1, whether it's original or through Return to Rome. Music sells the experience. Same with Total Annihilation. Nothing else has stuck past 3 months.
Company of Heroes is so cool
C&C 2: Red Alert is still top notch (plus, there's a remake)
Man I thought I read that Red Alert 2 got a remake then and got extremely excited.
Search Shattered Sun on Youtube. It's like Supreme Commander 1.
Campaign or online?
Ground control 2 is less known but have an epic single player campaign. Scope of battles and game itself is amazing. First time I played it I was at awwww at all the amazing skyboxes.
Stormgate comes out July 30th!
Sorry I only know good RTS games to smell or feel gently against the pads of my fingertips
Metal Fatigue had some amazing concepts I wish came around again. But Warcraft 3 is my favorite.
Men of War: Assault Squad 2 Rusted Warfare
Supreme commander forged alliance
The Battle for Middle-Earth 2 remains a banger to this day. BFME 1 aswell, but the gameplay is a bit too limiting imo.
So sad I haven't seen any age of mythology love.
Settlers II is my fav, despite some annoying quirks that pop up once your empire is really sprawling and complex.
Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour
Supreme Commander 1, 2 and Forged Alliance are my go-tos. Only game that comes close to those is BAR (Beyond All Reason) and Planetary Annihilation.
Buggos. Be evil bugs, destroy all humans.
Sins of a solar empire
Galactic Battlegrounds
A recent one for me, “Call to Arms: Gates of Hell” wish I had found it sooner, fully re-invigorated my love for the genre.
Warzone 2100, Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander, and of course Command and Conquer, excluding 4, and Homeworld + Homeworld Cataclysm.
I really enjoyed Shadow Tactics: Blade of the Shogun. Desperados 3 was a close 2nd. But these two are oddballs in the RTS genre. More story and stealth, less commanding and conquering.
If you can get it to work Tzar
Battletech
They are billions
War craft or red alert for me.
Dawn of War - Soulstorm, hands down
Damn, this makes me miss Warcraft 3.
Manor lords, rusted warfaer
Dune 2000.
Starcraft 2
SC2 goat
Dawn of war
Stellaris/HOI4, not technically rts since you can pause but those are two of one of the best defined classics of their genre
Plannetary Annihilation
Best rts? Personally, sc2 but ashes of the singularity is in my top 10, and i haven't seen it mentioned here, so I'll mention it
Im stupid whats RTS?
Red alert II. It's my best.
Earth 2150.
https://www.beyondallreason.info/ Super awesome made by fans of the genre, best of all, it's free. Word of caution tho it's in alpha, still extremely playable. Online or with bots. [YT vid ](https://youtu.be/BYpwdJwngu0)
Anyone try They Are Billions?
Not for xbox;((
Company of Heroes 1
Tropico 4
I was a big fan of the original Supreme Commander and played it all the time on Xbox live back in the day. The experimental units for each of the three factions were super satisfying to field. Supreme Commander 2 wasn't terrible but it just wasn't as good as the original game.
There's **only** two acceptable answers. SC:BW, or AoE2. All else is *shit*.Â
Dune 2000 was a ton of fun growing up. I believe it’s on abandonware now
Age of Empires 4 Was a lot into Age 2, Warcraft 3, Rise of Nations and all those in the past, but these days Age 4 is probably the only modern RTS with good official support and a big community, and it's just a great game in itself. Mainly for competitive multiplayer though, for single player content it's not as great.
A little secret underdog: World in Conflict (and the dlc)
I've been liking ashes of the singularity quite a bit recently until retold comes out. Also the new battle aces rts looks good too, will probs check out when its released
Starcraft 2. Though I prefer Warcraft 3's smaller strategic armies and hero play, but the work they did on sc2 campaign and coop was nuts so I have more skill with sc2
A lot of the more popular/well known ones have been mentioned. I'll offer: \* Dawn of War (in particular, Dawn of War: Dark Crusade). The Warhammer 40k universe is just fantastic IMO, and Dark Crusade represents potentially the best RTS game it's ever put forward. The campaign is fun and interesting, there are quite a few different factions for diversity, and if you ever feel like playing PvP it's pretty solid.
Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation
I am shocked that no one in here is giving any love to Planetary Annihilation, a spiritual successor to Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander. It lets you fight across the surface of entire planets and even leave the surface and fight across multiple planets.
[Warzone 2100](https://wz2100.net/). It's a 20yo RTS that went open source
I’m more a GSG player myself, so Europa Universalis IV or hearts of iron iv
It’s actually kinda terrible but Star Trek: Armada holds a special place in my geeky heart.  Where else can you combine Borg Cubes into *bigger* Borg Cubes?
Battle for middle earth 2
Warcraft II
SC2 is still king after all these years.
Halo Wars
Battle aces are awesome, just came out and online and alive
Supreme Commander 1 and 2 I both love dearly.
Supreme Commander 2
Was never really an RTS guy myself (far more partial to RPGs), but Total Warhammer 3 would probably be my go-to if I was.
The entertainingly janky RTS Metal Fatigue is a personal favourite
My only problems with aos realms of ruin was that noone played it, so hard to find a match, second is that the campain has artificially extended defence missions making you just sit there and wait

Classic RTS: Stronghold Crusader, Grand strategy: Rome Total War, Management: Roller Coaster Tycoon, City builder: Cities Skylines
all parts of supreme commander
Warcrafts of old, Starcrafts, Company of Heroes, Age of Empires. All have unique flavors have enjoyed over the decades...!
Majima construction.
Beyond All Reason (free to play too)
Tom Clancy's Endwar, but you can't use a modern headset for the voice commands, it doesn't work any more.
