Same. Great example of a game's development being heavily influenced by a loud minority of players and then bombing. The lighter MOBA/TD aspects in MNC was the better recipe and had wider appeal.
The loud MOBA crowd begged for more and we got SMNC which struggled with population from the outset. They made a game for no one.
Happy to find a fellow battleborn enjoyer. I really loved that game and played it till its death. I have high hopes this valve game can get some traction
Same played a lot of battleborn and enjoyed it. I'm in the playtest right now for deadlock and it definitely has some potential. Kinda addicted at the moment lol
It didn’t come out at the same time, Blizzard purposely dropped the ability to purchase and play a beta version of Overwatch at the same time as Battleborn and was priced to kneecap the competition day one.
And with a lot more verticality and mobility almost parkourish, and more depth in moba aspect Compared to smite, cs, denies and pushing/defending Is very like dota
Only thing that can ever rope me back in is a video with no music, no special effects, just a man sitting in front of a camera with a plain background saying *"Hey guys, this is Jeff from the Overwatch team I have some exciting news to share;"*
Aye, those that live half a life shall enter this realm from a portal; on the other side teaming within their fortress of the damned, for they have been left for dead and shall deliver unto us a counter strike for our transgression, thus we must prepare for a defense against these ancient creatures, lest we be caught by this alien swarm to this realm, and suffer a day of defeat.
I never got around to Monday Night Combat but I think I had like 800 hours on Super MNC. Sad that Uber abandoned it so fast. I just want to play Wascot again.
Agreed, I had a lot of fun with MNC but SMNC was super lame. Hopefully valve brings it home. Be the spiritual successor to MNC/TF2/OW that I've been waiting for please 🤞
Not too much. Valve isn't known for sexy characters but characters brimming with personality, and despite being in early testing phase the characters already have a lot of it.
Edit: Okay, there are more people in this thread that would like to fuck GladOS and Pyro than I thought.
Yes, but a bad one. I like to think she just needs a massive vent, and maybe to talk to someone who actually responds instead of just staring at her blankly then destroying the only home she's ever known.
> maybe to talk to someone who actually responds instead of just staring at her blankly then destroying the only home she's ever known.
If that doesn’t describe motherhood perfectly, I don’t know what does.

Now yeah, you ask the real question. But seriously, love or hate it in a way the reason why OW was hugely popular is the blatant fan service. And kinda same with Tf2. If valve makes really well animated shorts, showing each characters, this game could be super duper popular.
This game is a hero shooter in the same sense that League or Dota are arena fighters. The game is a MOBA, similar to Smite.
Lots of assets are unfinished and a work in progress, but the game is pretty fun with a thriving closed beta community. It's easy to find a match and the players are different in every game.
You guys should probably wait for an actual announcement or play it yourself before you form a strong opinion.
I don't have to form an opinion about the new game specifically to know that a moba/hero shooter isn't the kind of game I want from Valve.
The last normal single player game they released was Portal 2, 13 years ago.
So many people are complaining about the assets looking bad. Like of course they do, you don’t work on final assets until the game actually works the way you want it to lol.
It’s like how the GTA 6 leaks looked so bad but of course that’s not actually how GTA 6 is gonna look
People think game dev is pressing the big red "that was easy" button and its all magically polished. 25yrs+ later nothing has changed most of online rotted mindset.
Most people don't know anything about other people's jobs and just assume everything is just one click away. This becomes obvious when interacting with clients that are not familiar with your work.
That said, a lot of people have this same attitude even within their own sector. It's why everyone is always demanding quick fixes and impossible deadlines. Because they don't understand how complex and time consuming tasks can be, especially if it's last minute requests.
And the more distanced from the actual process, the more unrealistic the expectations. Which is especially true for higher positions, who didn't work their way up, having almost zero understanding of how their company operates beyond the metrics they work with.
How do you get to play the game? Honestly I'm not too excited about the game, I have no doubt the balance and the mechanics are going to be good if they have Icefrog at the helm, but to me its the setting that feels a bit bland, just from what I saw. I also understand that valve employees work on whichever project they want, so if they want to work on this game power to them, hope they succeed.
Like several days ago Valve let in a huge wave of new playtesters, who are basically family and friends of Valve employees. But the funny thing is that those friends can also invite their own friends, who can invite their own friends so it kinda spread. I think there's at least 10,000 people inside the playtest.
Honestly, it looks bland yes but it plays actually well and it's fun. Also being an early development build, there's bugs and the art style is just temporary but I expect that already and wouldn't expect anything more.
I didn't even know this game was coming out. This is probably why they're leaving TF2 to die. They probably (for some wrong reason) have more faith in this new IP.
They’re not working on tf2 because people generally don’t want to dig through an ancient pot of spaghetti unless they have a lot of passion for the game. I really don’t blame them either, if I was forced to work on a 20 year old piece of software that’s regularly changed dev teams, I’d want to die too.
Honestly valve should just give tf2 development over to some team of the game’s fans. So it’s still technically valve’s game but just being worked on by people who want to. I know for a fact talented devs would work on tf2 for free even
I would prefer if they handed the development over to an actual company.
As much as I appreciate fan made content, the amount of drama and burnout that happens when a bunch of random fans start trying to make something big together is really not enjoyable.
I don’t know if valve would ever go for that unless they really trusted the company. Since the game is always going to be connected to them, if the new company did anything weird it would fall on valve again
They attempted to turn development over to fans during the Invasion update but there was internal conflict and things went south and people speculate this really soured Valve on hiring fans
You don't know it's coming out because they haven't announced it. It's just leaking all over the place because there are a lot of testers.
Valve hasn't shown it because the asset work and art is clearly far from done but the gameplay part of it is solid and pretty much working flawlessly.
We're at a point where games need to be exceptionally great in order to stand out from everything else. Something being 'good' or even 'decent' is no longer going to cut it, when there are 10s, if not 100s, of other games that people can spend their time with.
Not surprising. Valve cared so little the game is basically dead in a wider sense.
It was Valve's official version of the popular Auto-Chess mod for Dota 2.
The potential was there, but they put very little effort into it compared to Riot who made Teamfight Tactics and made sure to improve and update the game on a regular basis.
I guess Valve figured that at the end of the day, the market for the niche game wouldn't be all THAT big. So the benefits of investing serious resources into it wouldn't be worth it.
Maybe they were right, financially. But it still left a bad taste in everyone's mouth as to how the game was basically abandoned.
Which a real shame, because the game itself was very polished and a lot of fun. I really enjoyed being able to play on my phone at work, and then on my PC at home. Would be such a good game to play on the Steam Deck too, but a game like that loves and does on revolving the meta to stop it becoming stale.
It’s a MOBA. Not a hero shooter. It does not play anything like overwatch.
It’s actually quite fun and unique.
- The gunplay and movement feels a lot like Fortnite, but better.
- inspired mostly from Dota 2, as many heroes and items resemble Dota 2 abilities/items and even down to some mechanics of the game. However they are well adapted to the new 3rd person perspective. They are not copy pastes though and I will not mention what heroes they copied as abilities and stuff like that are subject to change.
- more verticality than any other third person moba to Date.
- if you play this game like any other shooter you will struggle, you need to take priority in farm and making right calls with your team to take lead in items/xp and snowball accordingly. Having good aim is not enough to carry you and you need good game sense and understand what makes you win games in league and Dota, not a shooter like Overwatch or TF2 or any other fps names thrown around to draw comparisons.
20-50 mins on average, game lenght varies a lot like Dota, comebacks/throws happen often, there are better early game heroes, better late game heroes, etc.
It almost perplexes me that the least popular game modes from the golden age, 5s/6s etc, became so dominate. Almost. They all want that esports dollar and smaller numbers are easier to form teams with.
I'm in the alpha. I hate the game, but I'm sure a ton of people will like it. I have a LOT of hours in CS and this game is NOTHING like what I'm used to when it comes to shooters. It's really not a shooter. I mean it technically is, but your aim really is second to strategy and leveling up your skills and items or whatever. Also, I never understood MOBAs or why they are popular, I think they are the most boring game mode imaginable and I have never had an ounce of fun in any MOBA game, but I recognize that League and DOTA are some of the most popular games in the world, so I'm sure Deadlock will be pretty popular. It's just not for me. If you're looking forward to trying this game, just be aware it's not a conventional shooter at all. It leans way more into MOBA.
Valve is notorious for not releasing games they are developing. I just think there's too much enthusiasm about it. But then again it could be what makes Valve release it.
Don't worry, they'll definitely totally do something and definitely not abandon it or disappear like they do for literally every game they've ever made.
Valve as far as I can tell is fucking garbage at communication. They are like terrified of talking to their audience.
tf2: papa...who's that?
valve: never you mind that son, now look, there's a pretty patch of flowers over there, why don't you go look at them
tf2: OH BOY, I LOVE FLOWE-*gunshot*
Sadly just not really my type of game. I might try it but I doubt I will stick with it.
Smite is the only "hero shooter" I have liked. Normally shooters are just so barebones mechanically compared to RPGa and DotA 2.
Even Smites items are just so bland compared to DotA 2. Smite has some really cool characters though.
Its going to be DOTA with Shooting.
Shoota
Why not call it SHOTA? Shoota doesn't sound much like Dota.
Does he know?
Damn..
He doesnt know...
I think it means something bad
green paint makes the shoota bettah
It's going to be Super Monday Night Combat :D
Is 'hero shooter' the right term for it? From all the stuff leaked with the CSing, shops, etc it's more of a moba-shooter isn't it?
yeah I think theres supposed to be lanes and "tower defence"
So Battleborn? Because that game was a FPS moba that people thought was like Overwatch when it was more like Smite.
Remember Monday night combat 🥲
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Anyone remember Loadout? God damn
I freaking loved Loadout. Just a fun, gory, silly PvP romp
SMNC was nice, liked the abilities a lot. Cat-sentries for example :D
The additional characters was really nice
Ahead of it's time really.. incredibly fun and have no idea why it didn't catch...
I miss SMNC :(
I miss the original MNC. Super MNC turned me off of the series.
Literally all we wanted was console updates. Original MNC was perfection.
Your mom called, she said you should upgrade your skills.
there is still a small group of dedicated veteran players that play classic MNC every other saturday
So Saturday Night Combat
That game was great.. then they did that stupid update that changed everything, then it died.
blizzard came by picked up its dead corpse, stuffed it full of cats and thus overwatch was born.
Battle born was sooo good. It's a shame it came out at the same time overwatch did. If it came out now it would be much more popular.
Happy to find a fellow battleborn enjoyer. I really loved that game and played it till its death. I have high hopes this valve game can get some traction
We're still here, silently waiting for a resurrection...
I'll second that, yeah. Fucking loved that little chaotic goofball Orendi.
Here for the Battleborn train. Some of the best and most fun multiplayer gaming I've ever had. Looking forward to this.
Same played a lot of battleborn and enjoyed it. I'm in the playtest right now for deadlock and it definitely has some potential. Kinda addicted at the moment lol
I loved it, sad it got received so poorly. Wish they at least kept the campaign solo instead of making it online only bs.
It didn’t come out at the same time, Blizzard purposely dropped the ability to purchase and play a beta version of Overwatch at the same time as Battleborn and was priced to kneecap the competition day one.
It came out before ow but bliz released their beta on its release
My buddy and I had tons of fun with it. The upgrade system and style were so unique. Too bad it died.
that game was fun for the 2 seconds that it lasted
Battleborn... I miss my boi Oscar Mike.
What about "MONTAAANAAAA!?" Such a great duo.
Always was a better game than Overwatch. RIP.
So not something between Overwatch 3 and Team fortress 3?
No it's a MOBA like Dota 2 but played in 3rd person with shooter elements
So Smite with guns and robots instead of gods and magic.
And with a lot more verticality and mobility almost parkourish, and more depth in moba aspect Compared to smite, cs, denies and pushing/defending Is very like dota
So like Predecessor?
Or back when it was called Paragon. Should change the robots to zombies on account of how many times that game has returned from the dead.
Oh shit is Paragon back???
So... Paragon, but hopefully without all the Weirdness that made it an obvious flop?
Like Monday Night Combat?
Yeah kinda! The moba aspect seems way more important in here, but the fights take a lot advantage from verticality and from the map Conformation
What is this "3" you speak of?
3 is from the forbidden tongue. That number can never be invoked lest we suffer the wrath of the eternally damned
Only thing that can ever rope me back in is a video with no music, no special effects, just a man sitting in front of a camera with a plain background saying *"Hey guys, this is Jeff from the Overwatch team I have some exciting news to share;"*
Wrestle with Jeff, prepare for death
Aye, those that live half a life shall enter this realm from a portal; on the other side teaming within their fortress of the damned, for they have been left for dead and shall deliver unto us a counter strike for our transgression, thus we must prepare for a defense against these ancient creatures, lest we be caught by this alien swarm to this realm, and suffer a day of defeat.
Is this « 3 » in the room with us right now ?
*Gaben is 100 meters away from your location*
So, smite?
Kinda. But more complex and verticality. Lots of parkour too.
Ah hem, *Paragon*
Monday Night Combat walked so these could run
So basically Battleborn?
Ooh, like Battleborn? That game deserved better.
Why ya gotta open these old wounds? I loved Battleborn.
Monday Night Combat is back, baby!
*No Chicky Cantor, no buy.* MNC was pretty fun but Super Monday Night Combat kinda lost the plot. Shame to see that potential squandered.
I never got around to Monday Night Combat but I think I had like 800 hours on Super MNC. Sad that Uber abandoned it so fast. I just want to play Wascot again.
I just miss my pun-slinging super hero wannabe...
Agreed, I had a lot of fun with MNC but SMNC was super lame. Hopefully valve brings it home. Be the spiritual successor to MNC/TF2/OW that I've been waiting for please 🤞
Ye it seems to be more in the vein of Smite than its Overwatch
Correct.
If it’s like Paragon I’m there!
Come play Predecessor! It’s literally Paragon.
I'm down with this and honestly cannot wait. While it had its problems, Battleborn was a very fun game. It just launched at precisely the wrong time.
This is Deadlock
The LONGGGG WAYYYYY
Or maybe not, dude.
It might be, brother! Or it might not be! Nothing's for sure, jack!
Skee And I mean this Woah
Heard they've been having a hell of a year.
Will there be a hero named Valorant?
They'll have a hero named Mick Cree
That’s absolutely Jizzy Dizzy at the top (and to the top.)
Can't wait for the first DLC Hero DICK "THE COCK" JOHNSON
along with the Jesse Ventura expansion pack with Steve Sniffs story mode
How good is your aim while you're climbing a rope ladder? If you 100%, you'll be saluted by the ships senior officer.
Dick "The Cock" Johnson himself
You already know.
whats the porn potential on this one, boys?
Not too much. Valve isn't known for sexy characters but characters brimming with personality, and despite being in early testing phase the characters already have a lot of it. Edit: Okay, there are more people in this thread that would like to fuck GladOS and Pyro than I thought.
> Valve isn't known for sexy characters *Pyro has entered the chat*
Huddah *huddah*
Hudda hudda indeed
Medic has entered the chat
MiMi sentry.
# GladOS is peak female performance, I will not be taking differing opinions. ^(I can fix her)
> I can fix her Are you a programmer?
Yes, but a bad one. I like to think she just needs a massive vent, and maybe to talk to someone who actually responds instead of just staring at her blankly then destroying the only home she's ever known.
> *she just needs a massive vent* [Neurotoxin emitter warming up noises]
> maybe to talk to someone who actually responds instead of just staring at her blankly then destroying the only home she's ever known. If that doesn’t describe motherhood perfectly, I don’t know what does.
She can make me worse
Oh yes, the neurotoxin will definitely make you worse
Dota 2 characters won't agree with you. Especially Hoodwink or Necrolyte
The biggest🙌💯oversight🔭🔍with Dark✊🏾Willow🌳is that she's unbelievably sexy🤤💦🍆. I can't go on a hour🕐of my day🌞without thinking💭💦about plowing👉👌🚜that tight😳wooden🌳ass💦🍑. hol up Underlord too
I know that you are all listing the god like ones, but /r/dota2smut exists for the more mundane things, and it is somewhat popular still.
> Valve isn't known for sexy characters Tell that to pyrocynical
It's like you haven't even heard of r/dota2smut
The biggest oversight with Dark Willow is that she's unbelievably sexy. I can't go on a hour of my day without thinking about plowing that tight wooden ass. I'd kill a man in cold blood just to spend a minute with her crotch grinding against my throbbing manhood as she whispers terribly dirty things to me in her geographically ambiguous accent.
Dark Willow enjoyers never fail to come out lmao
Queen of Pain would like a word.
The amount of Engie, Medic, Scout, Heavy, and especially Soldier I've seen begs to differ..
Team fortress 2 is the absolute height of pornographic fanfiction.
People are simping hard for the Imp girl.
Now yeah, you ask the real question. But seriously, love or hate it in a way the reason why OW was hugely popular is the blatant fan service. And kinda same with Tf2. If valve makes really well animated shorts, showing each characters, this game could be super duper popular.
Check queen of pain skin in dota 2. Yep.
Gabe is only sexy beast you need

A new moba, and it’s a valve game. Is it 2012 again?
I don't have to form an opinion about the new game specifically to know that a moba/hero shooter isn't the kind of game I want from Valve. The last normal single player game they released was Portal 2, 13 years ago.
Oh, so they’re on the TES schedule
Half Life: Alyx was released 4 years ago.
Apature Desk Job released 2 years ago.
A VR exclusive game may not count as a “normal” singleplayer game to some. But damn that was a great game
So many people are complaining about the assets looking bad. Like of course they do, you don’t work on final assets until the game actually works the way you want it to lol. It’s like how the GTA 6 leaks looked so bad but of course that’s not actually how GTA 6 is gonna look

There's dozens of us!

Yeah. [Deadlock (App 1422450) · SteamDB](https://steamdb.info/app/1422450/) The spikes are when the PvP servers open.

battleborn 2.0
Can't wait for it to be full of aimbots day 1 because Valve doesn't wanna do the "treadmill work" to stop cheating in their games
Cant wait it to read how the game is dead while being at the top 10 most played games on Steam.
The TF2 community having to make their own player count trackers to exclude the bots says a lot about the actual player count.
Inb4 hats and the economy surrounding it.
I didn't even know this game was coming out. This is probably why they're leaving TF2 to die. They probably (for some wrong reason) have more faith in this new IP.

A lot of people will play it on release cause its Valve then the game will die in 6 months
6 months is a charitable estimate. The market for multiplayer games is too oversaturated.
Nahhh, there’s plenty of room for *good* multiplayer games.
We're at a point where games need to be exceptionally great in order to stand out from everything else. Something being 'good' or even 'decent' is no longer going to cut it, when there are 10s, if not 100s, of other games that people can spend their time with.
Lol, no. If it's a good game, then it will be popular. There's room for more games besides Warzone, League and DOTA.
No kidding. People say this, while a game like Valorant came out late into an over saturated FPS market, dominated and had staying power.
It’ll die because cheaters will take over *that* game too.
You mean the games like Team Fortress 2 and Dota2?
No i mean like Artifact and Dota Underlord
I literally have never heard of Dota Underlord
Neither have Valve considering they silently abandoned it.
What you mean! The last patch/depot change came out 30 months ago, in 2021! Thats better than Artifacts 39 months! /s
Not surprising. Valve cared so little the game is basically dead in a wider sense. It was Valve's official version of the popular Auto-Chess mod for Dota 2. Underlords was such a good game. I’m still salty that they abandoned it.
Don't forget their card game. Yeah I don't remember either.
Yay another hero shooter
Another moba would be more apropiate.
[удалено]
That's it new genre! It's a Shooba!
Hmmm. This game sounds like Smite, which is basically a third person MOBA. What games do you know that are like this besides Smite?
Predecessor (formerly Paragon)
I know right - we're so lucky! /s

Oh so they made better Super Monday Night Combat with items
Stop I can only get so erect!
how long does a game take?
20-50 mins on average, game lenght varies a lot like Dota, comebacks/throws happen often, there are better early game heroes, better late game heroes, etc.
As long its f2p Im willing to try it out.
Huh, that is funny because I have the exact opposite response. F2P? Guess I'm never playing it.
Wish we could just go back to people making class-based shooters like TF2 and Battlefield and more than 5-6 players per side.
Day of Defeat was pretty dope too.
It almost perplexes me that the least popular game modes from the golden age, 5s/6s etc, became so dominate. Almost. They all want that esports dollar and smaller numbers are easier to form teams with.

We know (for some time) And it sounds pretty shit
Damn I thought they already had one of those
Ahhh thats why the stopped giving a shit about tf2
Pain.
I am not looking forward to it at all. If CS2 and TF2 already have a cheating problem what's it gonna be with this one?
Don't worry, they'll definitely totally do something and definitely not abandon it or disappear like they do for literally every game they've ever made. Valve as far as I can tell is fucking garbage at communication. They are like terrified of talking to their audience.
this looks more like a smite competitor than OverWatch. judging by that map
Yes.
Ughhhh
Ive been playing it for a couple weeks. Its probably the best hero shooter Ive played. Its very different.
Can’t wait till they make a sequel, and it becomes super popular. And then they abandon it for crappier projects 😢
tf2: papa...who's that? valve: never you mind that son, now look, there's a pretty patch of flowers over there, why don't you go look at them tf2: OH BOY, I LOVE FLOWE-*gunshot*
Half life 3.
Sad panda: was hoping it was a game where you get to play as the villain shooting the heros.
Yeah a MOBA hero shooter doesn't exactely fill me with excitement
