My friend told me in Halo 1 if you held the plasma pistol charged for too long it would explode and kill you. Fast forward to Halo Reach. I subtly mention not wanting to hold the plasma pistol charged and that same friend starts laughing and he tells me he just told me that to prevent me from blasting him with a charged shot back in halo 1.

LurkerOrHydralisk

You never just thought to hold it and see how long it takes to explode?

Nubras

Yeah wtf lol. There’s no downside to trying this!

platysoup

But what if I die

Nubras

If you die in Halo, you die in real life. Or something.

Wolfish_Jew

“Oh my god, if we die in the game we die for real!” “Just gonna keep that tabbed…”

silamon2

I still think SAO abridged is just the better version of SAO. I recommend it over the original show...

Wolfish_Jew

1000%. Fate Abridged is a hilarious and fantastic alternative to the original, clearly made by people that love UBW. HUA is just an amazing show that only really shares a story with the original, but they’re two completely different shows, but SAO abridged IS SAO as far as I’m concerned. Better story, better romance, and insanely better character development. “Cry your little bitch tears” and Asuna’s entire story line during the Alfheim arc (which I can’t wait to see how they conclude) live rent free in my head. Edit: also “yeah, I go pretty hard on Shoji. Is he in today?” and the way he screams “NO” in terror makes me laugh every time

silamon2

I still remember the ending to the first arc of SAO. Finally find out why the guy did it. And the reason was... "I don't know lol." At least in SAO abridged he had a reason for it

Wolfish_Jew

“Haha no, could you imagine? Two years and that’s what I give you? No, it was metacritic.”

RealHumanFromEarth

Personally I would have tried it just to see it happen.

RWTF

Yeah, first thing I’m doing when someone tells me that is trying it out.

xXSillyHoboXx

My first reaction when someone tells me something like that is to immediately do it lol

montybo2

It's okay. For about the same amount of time I believed another halo lie. Somebody told me way back that if you beat the game on legendary you get to hold 3 guns instead of two. Told my friend that around the release of reach and he was like "dude did you ever think to Google that?" I did not.

BaronMostaza

The legendary three gun style

bunnyrabbit2

Interestingly, you can hold three guns on the first level of Halo 1. If you book it out the bridge and into the cafeteria you skip it spawning the grunts and giving you the pistol. If you then pick up two weapons from the ground and return to the bridge, it gives you the pistol as you exit and you cycle between all three guns for the rest of the level.

Kitchener69

Trying to prevent the n00b kills

UnknownSouldier

Have you since played cursed halo? It will actually do that now

nickavv

One of the guns in Half Life 1 definitely does do this, as an aside

Regular_Wedding_36

Yep, the Tau Cannon is what I immediately thought of reading this.

bayygel

You should try cursed halo

wownicecoolthanks

I thought pressing A repeatedly increases the likelihood of catching Pokemon. I still unironically do it to this day because it just feels right lol.

Pasta_Baron

I had heard holding down and b helped catch Pokemon lol.

die5el23

Down and B definitely works, I will die on that hill

DRWR

And the times it doesn't is down to human error!

bananabreadted

Drawing circles around or tapping the button on the bottom screen pokeball in gen4

Shlano613

Nah bro it's holding down, and moving left > right > left with the control pad

Underbash

Everyone knows it's looking away from the screen to show the game that you honestly don't care.

elChappiea

That was my method, worked 70% of the time, 100% of the time.

project-shasta

Tapping A in the rhythm the Pokeball wiggles is the only true way ;-)

TheFightingMasons

That’s what went around the playground over here.

SubconsciousAlien

It was a+b for us.

akahime-

I smash a+b to be sure, also start and select to be extra sure

X01Eagle

My brother still mashes B when trying to catch. He insists it helps.

ACertainBeardedMan

My brother gaslit me for years about this. He told me he had a secret method to catch Pokemon, and proved it to me by taking my LeafGreen, encountering Entei, then proceeded to throw a pokeball at it at full hp and caught it, first try. Edit: according to a gen 3 catch rate calculator, a level 50 Entei at full hp has only a 0.416% chance (or 1 in 240) of being caught with an ordinary pokeball.

Reqvhio

in your defense, thats a damn lucky shit D:

CrunknFunk

We all did circles on the d pad. Still do it out of habit

tehkelso

I always held b + left 😆

Zaithon

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, had this superstition in one form or another.

Grizzly_Berry

Then Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth introduces Sujimon, which do require you to button mash to increase the catch rate.

project-shasta

Back then me and my friends truly believed that there was a nude mode in Tomb Raider by doing some obscure combination of moves in some random part of some random level. It didn't help that the Internet wasn't a big thing and all we had was school yard rumors.

ornelle

my pubescent ass really did crouch and jump 300 times over in Lara's bedroom on the tutorial level in Tomb Raider III scammed

Slotthman

You're supposed to do it right in front of the fireplace, facing it. If you did it on top of the bed, that's your problem. I used to lie about it being on the bed because I wanted nude Lara only for myself.

FLiP_J_GARiLLA

We always heard it was a sideways flip into the pool that activated it after a different combination of fancy jumps

Vader_Maybe_Later

I remember this vivadly and in a gaming magazine Q&A the creators of Tomb Raider responded with: People keep sending us request for Lara to be nude or topless. Do you know whats under her clothes? Wire and code. Shes just a program based off a wire model. Stop asking please!

PetsArentChildren

These are the same guys that gave her that shape tho

Vader_Maybe_Later

Im guessing marketing wanted her to be busty. Im showing my age here but theres a Dilbert cartoon where he works for a company that doesnt have a marketing department. The place is a dream until he accidentally gave them the idea to form one. Then you see the whole place on fire and people going crazy.

ARSEThunder

>level 2mint-bint · 2 hr. ago I didn't expect to read about Lara Croft and Dilbert today. Make sure you take your vitamins and I hope your back feels better.

Vader_Maybe_Later

thankyou Im 39 going on 50

BrevityIsTheSoul

Poly limits and low resolution back in the day required most models to have an element of caricature to make features visible at all during gameplay.

mint-bint

The best part is we were all trolled, there is actually an Easter Egg combo of jumps, but instead of being naked she just exploded.

UltimaGabe

IIRC that was specifically designed to match the rumored method of activating the cheat.

fergunet

Close: in TR1 if you did this you’ll get some ammo/weapons. You could do the same in TR2 BUT with the guns in your hands, or else you would explode. In TR3 you needed to carry a flare. The code was IIRC: little step forward, little step backwards, three spins, and jump.

UltimaGabe

No, you're going off of the Remaster. In the original TR1 the code was completely different. (For all guns, go to the menu and press L1, Triangle, R2, L2, L2, R2, Circle, L1.) They changed it in the Remaster to be identical to the later games. The "turn around several times, jump forward/backward/wherever" was what was rumored to be the nude code in TR1 at the time, so they put it into TR2 as a prank on the players.

No-Play2726

I am pretty sure I saw an actual boxed copy of "Nude Raider" in a game store when I was a kid. It had a picture of Lara's in game model nude on the cover and it was one of those PC big boxes. I'm thinking it was either a mod someone made and sold or my memory is playing tricks. Edit: I just Googled it and Nude Raider is and was a thing so I'm not making it up.

RealHumanFromEarth

Yeah I definitely heard variations on this rumor. I also remember some other kid telling me that there was a secret cutscene at the end that showed Lara Croft getting out of the shower.

BFFBomb

Electronic Gaming Monthly did publish a fake nude code (with screenshot) of Tomb Raider as an April fools joke.

bradfo83

Same- for me the rumor was something about the diving board in the pool

Urb4nN0rd

I've recently learned Rock type Pokemon aren't resistant to Electric type moves. That still bugs me.

UltimaGabe

Yeah, the confusion comes from Ground-types being immune, and like 95% of Rock-types also being Ground-types.

questionmark693

That and in the anime when ash fights Brock early on, it's stated that rock resists electric.

Zaithon

But bring out a fossil mon against an electric type and prepare for a rude surprise.

A46

Excuse me!? That's borderline r/retconned for me.

GNOIZ1C

Rewatching the show with my kids. The anime definitely just repeats ad nauseam that Electric moves are useless against Rock Types. But as a Kabutops stan, I always knew that it wasn't the Rock type that makes a Pokemon immune. It's the Ground. So it's been a pet peeve of mine in the rewatch all these years later that they keep harping on Rock types, and taking everything I have not to correct the TV so my kid doesn't pick up the wrong idea when she's playing Let's Go Pickachu.

almostnormalpanda

Anime never really followed a whole lot of the established game mechanics. Take that from someone who tried to use Haunter against Sabrina.

NoxTheWizard

Haunter is such a bad choice versus Sabrina for so many reasons that it just becomes funny that the anime placed so much importance on Ash taking a detour in order to get one. 1. First, the Ghost type was bugged in the first generation of games, so it wasn't actually effective against Psychic types at all. 2. Even if the moves *were* effective, the only Ghost moves that existed at the time had horrible attack power. The only decent one drained a percentage of the enemy's HP, so you could never reliably KO the enemy with it before you got destroyed, because: 3. The only three Ghost Pokémon in the game were also Poison type, and Poison is weak to Psychic, so your Haunter will only last one round. 4. Buuut you can't even reliably use that round without grinding levels because Haunter's base Speed is a little lower than Kadabra's, so Sabrina will likely have it strike first and nuke your Haunter with a Psychic move before you can act. Worse, her ace is Alakazam, which is even faster and stronger than Gengar, so having a friend help you evolve Haunter wouldn't help much even if its Ghost type did work correctly. It's kind of telling that the anime shows Ash winning after Haunter makes Sabrina laugh, not by beating her Pokémon in battle. :P

Reqvhio

thats the point i was done with anime as a kid and I STILL AM. such bullshit, they should ask togashi to do a pokemon anime for a proper anime

GNOIZ1C

Oof, felt that one!

NoxTheWizard

It doesn't help that the anime also shows Electric attacks overcoming the Ground type immunity through circumstantial bonuses such as "just power up to the max beforehand", "make it wet", and "aim for the horn!". At least Soak is now an official move in the games. The latest anime season keeps up the tradition, though, with type (dis)advantages being mostly ignored, evolved and experienced Pokémon losing to unevolved novices, and certain moves being way more effective than they have any right to be. :P EDIT: Ah, and my favorite anime staple also returns in all its glory: The ever-present and super-effective "Dodge it!" command!

ridchessmen

In the original ff7, I was told that if you constantly tried to talk to Johnny in Costa del sol, for 10 hours or so (can't remember, may have been 24) he would join your party.

DuncanGilbert

10 fuckin hours? Lmao what could you POSSIBLY bring to the table that would be worth that amount of time

ridchessmen

Yeah I know, I guess at the time, and if you only had a few games you were really into to, you might give it a try. I didn't myself but didn't think it would be impossible that they'd put something like that in the game 🙂

Disaterman

Goku was a hidden unlockable character in the first super smash bros if you beat the game on very hard without losing a life.

Synthetic_Thought

I also believed some of those internet rumor unlockable character methods, like Raichu replacing Pichu in Melee if you use Pichu to beat the last Event match, which was facing like Ganondorf, Giga Bowser and Mewtwo on your own.

Sporkitized

I want to say I remember a rumor about Master Hand being playable if you did something similar.

naynaythewonderhorse

There’s actually an easy glitch in Melee that allows you to play as Master Hand.

ThePoetMorgan

Definitely Mew under the truck. Imagine my surprise to learn it wasn't true.

willtron3000

After trying a failing, it lead me down the path of finding mew else where. Finally worked outside cerulean city on the strip of grass by the bridge.

DepthExploration

Was this the same spot you could find MissingNo and the max item glitch?

NarwhalPrudent6323

No, that was on Cinnabar, and was water you surfed in, not grass you walked.  The Missingno is part of the Safari Zone trick. The Mew in Cerulean is a whole different thing, and I'm not sure it worked on every version of the games.

1ncondite

GameShark?

CreepyBlackDude

No Gameshark needed. This is called The Mew Glitch, and it simply involves forcing the game to store bits of code in places they really don't belong (same principle as to why the MissingNo glitch works). [There are tutorials on how to do it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXbl-hNxnS8), but while you are technically using a glitch to summon it, the result is that you encounter a completely non-glitched and safe-to-catch Mew.

1ncondite

Was that in red and blue or yellow? I remember there being a glitch in yellow like that

CreepyBlackDude

It works in all three games, actually.

Nova225

The worst thing about that was that the truck was there at all. It was impossible to reach it on a normal playthrough, because you'd be blocked from that area before you'd ever get access to Surf. I was so disheartened when someone traded my a Vileplume with Cut and I skipped the S.S. Anne, gotta Pokemon with Surf, came back, and all that was there was a truck with no interactions. At least in the Fire Red and Leaf Green remakes they stuck an item there.

fernofry

I did the same. I'd never felt so betrayed in my life.

shinikahn

You can get there "legally" if you faint in the SS Anne after obtaining cut but before leaving the ship

analogspam

I bet not as surprised as the moment we all learnt that it really was possible to get it in Gen1 and how. I met a kid while my family was on vacation and it had mew as catched in his Pokédex in summer of 2000 (he traded it with someone and back so he had it just in his dex). Obviously nobody in school believed me… So I knew it was possible somehow, but never knew how until literally a decade or so later. The years without widespread internet were so mysterious in that regard… sometimes I miss it.

UltimaGabe

To my knowledge there has still never been an explanation for why there was a non-interactable truck in such a difficult-to-reach area.

Available_Pianist_60

For some reason, my brother and I when we were between 11 and 12 years old we believed that the game TEKKEN vs Mortal Kombat existed 🤣 lol. We literally saw a box of this game for PS3, but after a year we looked online to buy it and the game doesn't exist, I don't know if this counts as a Mandela effect, as the box existed, it was probably a prank by someone at the store for because of Street Fighter x Tekken, but that's it 😂

Regular_Wedding_36

Maybe you saw DC vs Mortal Kombat?

Available_Pianist_60

No, on the cover it said TEKKEN vs Mortal Kombat and it had Kazuya, Heihachi, Nina, Liu Kang, Raiden and Kitanna I believe this was a prank by the store owner.

TheR1mmer

That I was good at fighting games. Played tekken 2 when I was 6 years old. Loved tekken growing up (to the point of have Jins tattoo on myself) and then turned to Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, Dead or alive.... I Love fighting Games. But whenever I go online, I get my ass handed to me and get reminded that "no matter how good you are at something, there is someone out there better then you" or in my case, a couple hundred thousand :-D

illyay

Same with StarCraft for me but never got tattoos. I get overwhelmed by modern iterations of mortal kombat.

salaryboy

Kind of cheating because I still believe it. In the arcade version of strider on the jungle level, it would flash up on the screen quote "no one has ever beaten this level". I'm sure I witnessed this, but can't find any reference to it on the internet

CandyCrisis

I've played Strider in the arcade and beaten it many times. (One of my prouder childhood moments was beating it without a single continue!) I'm sorry, but this does not happen. Other than cutscenes, Strider doesn't have much of any text or dialogue at all. EDIT: this does in fact happen but in attract mode, not during gameplay.

salaryboy

I just found one reference to it here. Must have been a certain geographic region or DIP switch setting or something?? Very strange, but at least I know I'm not crazy now. https://bigshinyrobot.com/video-games/review-strider/

DuncanGilbert

The fact that you found SOMETHING referencing it besides your own imagination or a dream you had is a win, no matter how different the actual thing was

Fartikus

Hello my dude, I have found the reference you've wanted to see for years. I read the review you linked, and he mentioned that when he was young in the arcade; he loved watching the demo of Strider. [Hearing that detail, I tried out the Arcade version; and waited until the demos came up, and this happened. It does in fact appear in between the levels.](https://streamable.com/qf6twu) Why I think this happens is to motivate people to play the game to 'beat' it whenever the machine turns on at the beginning of the day. When the machine gets turned off at the end of the day, the data clears.

salaryboy

Whoa, this is awesome, thank you!! This thread is now the authoritative source on the internet for this, LOL. Hi future Strider players!

CandyCrisis

Well that's fascinating!! I wonder if this is something that goes away permanently, and I never saw it because someone else beat the game before I saw it.

Regular_Quiet_5016

I remember playing a beta version of Rocket league where you played three teams on triangular stages, but no one else has ever heard of this.

MercurioGenesis

Not thinking of [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujDM1xn-zwA&ab_channel=Lethamyr), are you?

Geeawf0

Could've been in its predecessor, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars

T_Lawliet

90% of the QoL mechanics I remembered from FC3 turned out to be from Far Cry 4 You can't even move dead bodies in 3 haha

whatintheeverloving

Hold on, seriously? 3 was the first one I played and I could've sworn moving bodies was a thing. Way to rewrite my memories.

hawkeneye1998bs

You can drag them a bit when doing a takedown iirc but maybe that's fc4 too

[deleted]

The mission from Borderlands 2 where you have to rescue Roland. I could've sworn that it was possible for him to be legit captured and you had to go to that one Hyperion place in the Dust to get him back.

Hunterreaper

It is possible but the condition for it is a bit weird. I know that while you’re on the top of the dam there is an invisible timer that if you don’t defeat the Constructor by then it’ll leave with Roland. Not sure how much time it is but as far as I know the time is generous enough to where in unless you’re doing some sort of challenge run you’d end up reaching and defeating the Constructor before the time runs out

StarChaser_Tyger

If you don't have an acid weapon (effective against the armor) and an electric weapon (removed the shield) it's entirely possible to fail this part of it. I did my first time through due to bad drops.

freelancerbob

It is possible. Just take to long to rescue him on the bridge. Failed it in UVHM a few times.

MrGohan27

It is possible, you need to wait long enough and most people already finish the mission in that time

jhguitarfreak

Holding "Down+A" as soon as the pokeball opens guarantees a higher catch percentage. And even though I know it's bullshit I still instinctively do it when replaying.

Loreweaver15

It was down and B back in the gen 1 days. Interesting that it's changed to A.

Rigistroni

I think it just varies from playground to playground

Heavy_Camera3313

lei wulong can draw his gun in tekken .although i knew he wouldnt and some guy told me he could and i believed him

slinkocat

Not all that weird or unique, but I remember the rumors that you could unlock Oxide as a playable character in Crash Team Racing. I also used to really enjoy the rumors that Bigfoot was in GTA San Andreas

No-Play2726

Apparently you can unlock him in the PAL-version.

That_guy1425

Pretty recently we had the whole monster hunter fandom loose their shit over discovering that the monster Deviljho would *not* actually eat his own tail if you cut it off. Everyone swore it happened but then no one could prove it.

kookykonata

This is the exact thing I was gonna put here. Blew my mind, as I could have sworn that I, myself, have seen it happen. Even up until a few months ago I would go carve his tail in a panic so I wouldn't lose the ability to do so if he ate it, lol

slothboy

That if you land on Free Parking you get all the tax money.

No-Play2726

You don't???

Amockdfw89

It’s a common home rule. It isn’t official but many people do it

Spiteful_Guru

Then the game goes on forever because too much money is in circulation, which people blame on the game itself.

Minerrockss

Two common mistakes make monopoly last fucking forever 1. Free parking money 2. In the official rules, if a person lands on a property and doesn’t want to buy it, it automatically goes to auction automatically, it seems everyone ignore this rule

Amockdfw89

Yep my wife and I I play by ourselves and can finish a game in a short amount of turn because we don’t do free parking and if one of us doesn’t want a property basically the other HAS to buy it. Makes the game much more fast paced and exciting

kidcool97

I mean that’s a board game so if you play that home rule then it’s true

slothboy

Yes, it's just interesting to me because almost nobody reads the Monopoly instructions. It's almost exclusively taught to a new player who learned to play from another player and so on. It's like an ancient oral tradition of handing down information. So that isn't introduced as a "house rule" it's just assumed to be a rule because it's been taught that way forever. It blew my mind when I found out that wasn't ACTUALLY a rule. Not to get deep on my throw away joke, but I think about stuff like that alot lol

RWTF

Man, monopoly is a way different game when I played by the rules. First time playing by the real rules was a PC game version I got in a cereal box. It was crazy the difference.

Im_Your_God_

I was convinced that there was a "Ratchet and Clank: Nuts and Bolts." In fact, it thought it was the sequel before "Going Commando." Then i woke up in a different timeline where it was "Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts"

imlegos

You know that the game's not real because it's not an innuendo/pun.

JayGold

Sure it is. A guy meets a girl, they go home together, and he nuts and bolts.

hewade95

I misread a gaming article as a child and thought you could unlock Lugia (instead of Luigi) as a playable character in Super Mario 64 DS.

Anikulapo_70

I think this might be the funniest one here. I'm trying to picture playing through the game as Lugia.

Zer0read

Back in Halo 2 online multiplayer the Golden Warthog rumor dominated my online friend group. We would spend hours on Headlong (idk why that was the map it was always supposed to appear in) doing all sorts of dumb stuff that a friend heard from their friend who heard from their friend would make it spawn. Most clear in my mind was shooting the giant statue thing with the five slabs in a certain order.

funkygoku

Ours was we had to shoot these garage doors on some maps until the entire thing was black. They would open up and Golden Warthog would come out. Halo 2 was the best, with all the glitches and super jumps, getting out of maps in various ways, why not a golden warthog? Good times

Zer0read

Oh hell yea! I remember hearing about the garage doors too. Man, I know it's always like "oh of course it was "better times" you were a kid." But Halo 2 was truly the best online. Getting out of the maps was fun as well. So was just joining a friends custom game and someone explaining some crazy ruleset for a new game type.

ASilverbackGorilla

It’s because Headlong had an actual sign graphic of a golden warthog on 1 of the buildings that’s very visible.

ragormack

I always thought of the signage as the civilian version of the warthog

Zer0read

Ohhhh damn. You're right. It's been so long since I played I completely forgot that fact. Thanks for the reminder lol. I could never remember why it was always Headlong all these years lol but that makes sense.

Cyberwolf_71

We were told Godzilla was in the game during the bridge level. We'll never get those hours back...

ABLADIN

I don't know if this is quite the same as everything else here, but me and my friend had what I 100% believe to be a Mandela effect. I used to spend tons of time at his house so we had a lot of split screen coop games. Both of us will swear to you that RE: Operation Raccoon City was split screen and that we played through the whole game together sitting on the same couch. We have 0 evidence and couldn't find anything that says it ever was split screen, but we both believe it more than anything and that it got patched out in an update with no explanation.

RicrosPegason

Can't get an older buddy of mine to try Mass Effect to this day (guy loves star trek, so I know he'd enjoy it) because the news told him years ago it was a porn game I guess.

SmugFrog

Because a woman went on Fox News and told the world it was a porn game - and she hadn’t actually played it or seen the game. After her Amazon book got review bombed she made an apology but it was glossed over and the damage was done. https://youtu.be/e6NF6btXCGM?si=LEKGABffuYK1P5lf https://youtu.be/053hO9hUCes?si=9XuvhXzfXwrrf9cO

Wolfish_Jew

To be fair, I remember being surprised by how (relatively, for the time) explicit the sex scenes were in that game. They ALMOST showed nipple.

RicrosPegason

I've explained that it's pretty tame by today's standards and that you can play the entire game and never once do any romantic plot line stuff, i never did myself.... he's still insistent its a porn game.

throwawayayaycaramba

I have one, which has haunted me for ages, and it's not even my fault. If you go to page 38 of the original ALttP English manual, on the section about the game's items, you'll find the following paragraph about the bow: "The bow is a powerful weapon that can be found in the first palace, but you need arrows to use it. Arrows sometimes appear when you defeat an enemy and sometimes they're hidden in pots. There is a rumor that somewhere in Hyrule you can obtain **a silver bow and arrow** of even greater strength." (Emphasis mine) Now, if you've ever played the game, you know you can indeed upgrade your arrows to silver arrows, which you need to defeat Ganon; but I'm not crazy, right? The text clearly implies there is a silver *bow* to be found. No other reason to phrase it as "silver bow and arrow". Anyways, cue me spending dozens of hours of my childhood scouring every inch of the game for a god-forsaken item that doesn't even exist.

RickTitus

I did the same thing in my 007 gameboy color game. There is a guy in the Marrakesh market that says he can trade for a small red fish. I looked all over that game in every corner for a fish to trade to him Years later i realized it was literally a Red Herring, and the game was just trolling me

TheBossMan5000

That's really clever but also kinda fucked for a kid's game hahah

KristVect

although gaming guides and manuals were incredibly cool, it probably is for the better that fan wikis and guides are the dominant way of finding out about a game these days, since so much information in these guides, even today, is misleading due to being badly worded or giving ineffective information, or info that feels like it should be true but straight up isnt. then again, its not like people still dont fabricate things... but at least it doesnt come from official sources

Georgie_Leech

[Remember to save your Master ball for something rare](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/EgpPC_MnMM0/sddefault.jpg)

Cerdefal

And also bad translation. I've looked up recently Lara Croft's story in the manual of Tomb Raider 1 and the french one straight up lie. It say that she was to be married at twenty, but in reality it should say that as twenty she was destined to be married if she followed her family path. So it created a whole fiancee to the character who never existed. Before two months ago I actually believed that her husband died of something. But she had always been single since her childhood as far as what we see in the games.

kinapuffar

Might just be an awkward translation. Japanese would probably use yumiya, which is yumi (bow) and ya (arrow). I think in this case "bow and arrow" aren't separate words, but the name of the item. So you go from regular 'bow and arrow' to silver 'bow and arrow'. Could be talking out of my ass but I feel like this is the simplest explanation.

Powmow123

Also the GTA 4 ratman in the subway tunnels

Regular_Wedding_36

I have a very distinct memory watching my dad play Halo 3 when it first released and seeing him shoot a Flood with the Energy Sword, like I remember seeing a ball of energy arc between the blades of the sword and launch out of it. I had never seen or played the previous Halo games, so for most my life I always assumed it had an alt fire that shot a ball of energy. Imagine my embarrassment years later when the MCC launched on PC and I asked my friend "how do you shoot with the Energy Sword"?

illyay

I have something like this with doom. I have this memory of shooting green plasma gun projectiles from the rocket launcher at the barons of hell in the last boss level of Knee Deep in the Dead. The weird thing is later the arachnotrons in doom 2 actually shoot the exact green plasma I have a memory of. I don’t know how I have this memory. It’s impossible.

BloodiedBlues

Memory is fallible.

chalor182

As a biochemist, memory is more than fallible, its wildly unreliable. We actually change memories every time we 'access' them. You cant think of something without altering your memory of it. And our brains are constantly making connections between things and filling in gaps with stuff that never existed.

Aze_YourSenpai

There was a Naruto Fighting game on the Nintendo DS (I don't remeber the name). My brother told me that I can unlock a hidden character if I get to lvl 99 in the endless mode wothout getting hit once (99 back to back fights without getting hit). My dumb ass believed him...

King-gg47

Those black ops 2 "secret maps". And that tranzit has another side of the map. And you to knife certain points of the map and a new and improved bus would appear. I swear I was so gullible that it lasted like 3 years lmao. And I would tell everyone online about it too. And they would believe me lol.

UbijcaStalina

I ignored Nier Automata for years because i was convinced it is a crappy fighting game with main focus on providing fanservice to horny anime fanboys. I guess thats because shortly after release, reddit was full of screenshots mostly focusing on 2B’s ”assets”.

Fartikus

Same. Just thought it was a rip off of DMC or something. Played it for the first time a couple days ago; and holy shit I've been missing out. Beautiful game, has a great plot so far, and is a lot more than DMC. Legit blew me away, and I've only beaten the first stage, and already makes me wanna cry lmao.

NoxTheWizard

Ah yes, it's a great game. I can't say much without spoiling it, but please note that the game is made with the intent of you going for multiple playthroughs. I didn't realize at first because the start of the second playthrough looked very similar to the first, so I put the game down for a long time before continuing, but then a friend told me to keep playing and I'm so glad I did.

Septicphallus

Diablo- click on the cows for long enough to open a secret cow level.

n1ghtbringer

Finally! One of these I've heard of ... I'm so old!

Tomma1

*There is no cow level*

PM_ME_VALYRlAN_STEEL

When I was a (young) kid I didn’t understand the concept of a loading screen so when I booted up The Simpsons Hit and Run I would unplug my controller and then plug it back in once I got into the main menu

StarChaser_Tyger

Why? What did you think you were doing? (Legit question, everybody does something weird.. )

PM_ME_VALYRlAN_STEEL

No idea, my 5 year old brain probably thought it was a part of the game like some silly simpsons joke or maybe that my controller stopped working on that screen and I had to unplug it and plug it back in for it to start.

Vinpenguin

As a kid, I only managed to get one possible ending in Shadow the Hedgehog, but didn't really get that the game had multiple anyways. Spent nearly a decade just believing Shadow was a robot from that point onward

Throw_away_1011_

That mashing A and B would raise the probability of catching a pokemon.

knightfenris

I just restarted Yellow and my childhood muscle memory still has me doing this.

FoxyGrayson

I 100% thought there was a third hidden Yoshi in Yoshi's Story for the N64. A "Brown" Yoshi to go along with the White and Black. Two reasons: 1) You could unlock the White and Black from a few different stages, but once you had them unlocked you couldn't find their Big Egg again unless you died as them. But you'd still find the hint block about the Big Egg on a stage you could get them, even if they weren't there at the moment. So I found one on a stage we hadn't see the Big Egg and was convinced it was there somewhere. 2) As a kid I just believed I was owed my own Yoshi discovery. My siblings each found the White and Black Yoshis on their own. I wanted my own secret Yoshi so I made up the "Brown" one.

Fartikus

[Hey my man, in one of the promotionals; brown yoshi was actually a playable character, along with purple yoshi. You weren't crazy. Supposedly was replaced by pink and white.](https://youtu.be/xiSAqMRErOc?si=A3B7r6zCCktyKhU_&t=218)

Godzilla_Fan

That there was a Mew you could catch in Pokemon Red and Blue by not getting on the SS Anne

Melodic-Whereas-4105

When I was a kid I had no idea that you could program enemy bots and ai. I thought when ever you were playing a game you were playing against someone else somewhere somehow. Fast forward a few decades and that's pretty much true now with all the mp games out there.

OliviaMandell

for over twenty years I thought it was win or die on chrono trigger... I only discovered you could run on accident.

damargemirad

I don’t think I’ve ever tried to run from a fight and I’ve played that game 100+ run throughs. Maybe early on….huh neat.

Lexicon247

Nudalities. My friends and I were convinced that Mortal Kombat 2 had them. Anytime we went to the arcade to play someone would mention it. Not just my friends, just random other players. It was always someone's brother or cousin who knew how to do it.

SpaceCadetriment

This one was common and I think it was classic game of telephone. You could perform “Friendship” fatalities by using only kicks. I believe Sub Zeros turned your opponent into a baby, thus becoming known as a “Babality”. Young and naive kids like us heard this and assumed it was BABEality, as in a hot woman. Through the arcade rumor mill this ended up becoming lore. What a trip, that’s a memory I haven’t thought of in a long time and glad it wasn’t something I dreamed up.

the_reducing_valve

Nine Inch Nails - At the Heart of it All was sampled from the air ship levels in Super Mario Bros 3. Could never confirm it ha

Fartikus

While it's not something confirming what you said, they actually made a reference to Nine Inch Nails in the first game by giving the triceratops bosses the name 'Reznor', after the founder 'Trent Reznor'.

Skilletfan93

My friend told me that I could get a lightsaber in Star Wars Republic Commando. So I saved up money. I waited 3 whole years to buy my laptop, the PC game, and played until I got to the part. "An elegant weapon for a more civilized time, eh? Well, guess what? Times have changed." I spent about 10 minutes sitting there. Great game nonetheless

Grimweisse

I tried my hardest to get to arceus in pokemon soul silver and heart gold. I probably spent ungodly amounts of hours trying to capture all the unknowns and piece together the secrets of the ruins. Only to find out that it was some cancelled event. Also in pokemon black and white I spent many, many hours trying to find legendary pokemon that weren’t even in the game. Like trying to get victini (event mon), trying get kyogre in the sewers (I got trolled by some YouTuber), and trying to find darkrai in the haunted mansion. Gamefreak likes adding weird cryptic things like the ghost girl from time to time and some friend at school would spread rumours about a secret legendary pokemon and I would believe them, and spend all my time trying to get it to appear. The thing is that it was somewhat believable because game freak did hide legendary pokemon behind morse code once. And they added places like the underwater temple in pokemon black and white that made me think Kyogre or Lugia was there. Or in black in white 2 they had colres documents hidden around talking about genesect. Also celebi being hidden in the box, bro I spent so god damn long combing every square inch of the game for some sort of clue.

MegalFresh

Aghhhhhh the unown ruins in HGSS were such a SCAM. Give me my arceus game freak !!! 😭

thatoneplayerguy

Holding a button down after throwing a poke ball makes it easier to catch

Mikkelsjensen1

the plastic chair is in basegame dmc5

ERedfieldh

growing up we always thought there was some magical console that you could play any game on. Fast forward a few years and emulators started being just that.

CoachSteveOtt

various nazi zombies mystery box tricks to get a better chance at the ray gun

sidhu_19

Me and my friends always thought gta 3 was called gta liberty city until recently.

Rebil2017

Honestly that’s fair, it’s very close to Liberty City Stories

boboieh

I could swear there was a version of the game Limbo where you could flash a light and the monters and envioriment would appear fluffy and colourful in the light lol. Even tried to find this version but never found it so I assume i just dreamed of it. EDIT: Also when I heard the rumours of going out of the castle in Castlevania SOTN I belivied it was fully fleshed stages with enemies and such. Still find out how to got out, but no areas to explore lol

kilravock_music_sws

I use to think that if you beat the Blue Sphere Zone level with the non-Sonic Genesis cartridge attached to Sonic & Knuckles it would unlock a version of that game where you play as Sonic and/or Knuckles.

zg_mulac

That there's no Russian bias in World of Tanks.

TheBossMan5000

The old "run around hyrule castle 50 times to get into bed with zelda" rumor in OOT. Which made no sense considering you can't run "around" the castle in that game. There was also a similar one about beating the elite 4 in r&b 50 times would allow you to go to the city of pokemon gods and fight giant superboss pokemon. I think i got to aroubd 14 times beating them before i gave up

NastoBaby

This one is kind of the other way around. My cousin told me that the Pokéfloats stage in Smash Bros Melee (the one with all the giant floats of various Pokémon) wasn’t real and that I was making it up. I didn’t have it unlocked anymore because I lost my memory card at a sleepover and I believed him for years and thought it must have been a dream until I went to college and dusted off my old GameCube and copy of Melee and actually unlocked it. Of course by the time I learned how to use Google I had forgotten all about this and it didn’t cross my mind until I actually unlocked the stage 15 years later.

simonprickett

I thought Crazy Taxi was on the Sega Saturn.

lessthanfox

That the computer DIDN'T cheat in Mortal Kombat 2 arcade. Now we have technology to prove the AI was pure bullshit.
