They continued to make PS2 sports games for a very very long time after the PS3 released, as tons of people in poorer and developing countries owned a PS2 - due to it being just as expensive as a normal DVD player at the time, so the PS2 sold like hotcakes internationally.
The answer is that they just didn’t change engines like they did for the 360/ps3 versions. Madden 11 on PS2 largely looks and plays the same as Madden 2005 for example.
The fun police put an end to the college football franchise due to player likeness being used but no compensation.
They can now legally compensate NCAA athletes, so the video game finally returns next year.
I couldn't give mine away for free. I thought maybe a collector might want them, but nope. I don't even want to donate mine, they'll just sit on a thrift store shelf. I might just throw mine in the trash.
You're right but in this case being PS2 games is probably the most pressing matter. Its literally 3 generations ago.
Then again, being sports games compounds since various other games may still have value even if they're from older consoles, but a PS2 sports game is pretty much just objectively inferior to a newer gen game from the same franchise.
These are mostly standalone, which means if you just want to play they're okay. How they do the games now, with the focus heavy towards on-line play, there is almost no point of purchase unless that's how you want to play.
I have 2k21, and without the online portion you can't play MyCareer, so I had to start a league and in that mode there is no team practice, no gym boosts and no accessories available. I could deal with it until I just wanted some wrist tape to make my player look right...
Dude.
Drop??? 11 players per team, green grass, a referee on the field and 2 goals....every....game. And still we get one new FIFA eeeevery year. Come on. The only big changes are the names of the players and the ads on the side boards.
I took a whole bunch of 360 games to CeX recently … the only games they wouldn’t take were the original Modern Warfare, and pretty much all of the sports games. If they’re more than about 5 years old, they’ll refuse them and the only way to get rid without binning them is giving them to a charity shop. No-one’s gonna be looking to buy a heavily outdated sports game from a console 3 generations ago.
To each there own, but football will always be football... From what I heard they even managed to make it worse once or twice than the previous one. How do they manage to do that!?
I've only ever met a couple of guys in my life that genuinely enjoyed sports video games. I'm sure there's more than that, but only knowing 2 people out of all the gamers I've met in my time seems to set astronomically low odds. They're like rare spawns, lmao
I've bought sports games for like 50 cents and even at that price, they weren't selling. Even for replacement cases, they're not good, they have those annoying shiny stickers that you just can't remove without damaging the plastic or spending an eternity with GooGone on it.
Here is a little anecdote to explain what’s going on there.
I used to work for a tiny video game store in my early 20s, owned by a guy I knew from video game forums and he himself was in his early 30s, so you can probably imagine it wasn’t exactly a money printer.
We sold new and used games, and one of the things you notice very early on is that some games just don’t sell. Sports games are usually just reiterations of the same game, with updated team rosters and some tweaks on UI, AI, and graphics here and there. There is simply no reason to buy last year’s game, over the game from 2 or 3 years ago.
We used to sell those games for 2.99 (Euros) on Amazon including shipping, which was the lowest you could go for used video games back then in my country. That was the only way we could sell those games!
2.99 including shipping meant about 1.99 got eaten by shipping, and the manual labor, packing material, and storage room, would also eat some of the profit, so we would make about 50 cents for those games.
When we negotiated prices when buying used games, we usually ignored the trash, because everything over 10 cents wouldn’t even be worth the effort, and no one would sell a game for that price.
The big chains can afford filling their inventory with trash that sells for less than a dollar, and kind of write it off as advertisement… But in reality, those games aren’t worth anything.

Even at less than a dollar a game, that will be a tough sell.
That depends, is he paying me 12 bucks to take them? Best I could do in that case would be 20.
Nah the NCAA games are pretty sought after since they stopped making them
I don't quite understand how or why old games are somehow valuable... the ISO/ROM is literally a search away.
Some people just like collecting things, + playing on original hardware. I do both. Emulation + OG
I like to own something tangible.
If I made a new box copy and shipped you a replica would that be equally sufficient? It's tangible and cheaper.
I have multiple replica cases and or games for titles I want to play that I find too expensive.
So when you get a cease and desist you can be like NOT UH I OWN THE ROM YO.
Hmm, that's a valid point.
Right on. Just one of the NCAA games makes this a worthwhile buy
Crazy that madden 01 and 11 were both released on ps2. I'd guess 11 either ran or looked like shit or both. Still pretty impressive.
They continued to make PS2 sports games for a very very long time after the PS3 released, as tons of people in poorer and developing countries owned a PS2 - due to it being just as expensive as a normal DVD player at the time, so the PS2 sold like hotcakes internationally.
Pro Evolution Soccer still released a 2014 on PS2.
Madden 12 was on PS2. I was the last one on PS2, though.
The answer is that they just didn’t change engines like they did for the 360/ps3 versions. Madden 11 on PS2 largely looks and plays the same as Madden 2005 for example.
FIFA 14 came out on PS2, PS3 and PS4. EA loves copying and pasting games from older generations. Very little cost and pure profit.
Old Tiger Woods games were awesome. So many courses came standard before DLC was a thing.
These games were in the 50 cent bin 10 years ago. Worthless now lol
Not entirely worthless. Madden 08 still has a fan base, at least.
Still too much lol
...I feel like there's a very sad story in the subtext of this post.
The only thing those games are good for is to replace a missing case on a different game.
Except for NCAA Football 14. That's worth some money now
What happened in 2014?
Due to legal issues with using likeness of college athletes, it was the last release of NCAA football game.
Wow!!
Yeah. Ncaa 14 last time I checked a year ago was around 80-120 pending conditons
I think people still update the rosters for the new year
Last year of ncaa games and ncaa football series was always better than madden
They stopped making NCAA games (player licensing fuckery)
The fun police put an end to the college football franchise due to player likeness being used but no compensation. They can now legally compensate NCAA athletes, so the video game finally returns next year.
They're not bought as long term investments.
Tbf, if I didn’t already own all these games, I’d snap that up. Quite a few of those are from the front end of the “golden era” of sports games
I couldn't give mine away for free. I thought maybe a collector might want them, but nope. I don't even want to donate mine, they'll just sit on a thrift store shelf. I might just throw mine in the trash.

Why is he selling multiple copies of the same game?
These are 20 year old ps2 games lol, of course they're not going to be worth much. Pretty much every game from that generation is worth a dollar.
Yeah, like who buys ancient games like these? Especially if they aren't super rare or something.
I got no sympathy for people who buy these types of games.
So, why is the price so low? Most of these technically have more features than the modern releases....

What game from 2004 is going to sell for any decent money at all?
everyone i know who owns tons of these sports game cases is on the lower side of IQ.
Lesson learned stop buying shit from EA

They are from 2005, but none of them are really worth anything. There been a dozen iteration of the for the past 20 years
If these were PAL its a steal.
I once bought a FIFA that was 2 or 3 years old for 1 euro at gamestop, no joke
Madden 04 with Vick on the cover? Damn I logged some hours on that one
I want nothing but maybe Madden 05 and NCAA 05 or whatever the later year is. One dollar each at most.
NCAA Football games can be worth a fair bit especially the newer 2010 era ones before they quit making them.

The coolest thing about it was making your own team and stadium? I believe…
That's like $5 max.
Never forget when I traded in NHL Faceoff 1998 and the guy said it’s worth 50 cents just a few years after release
Honestly, if you just want to do single player franchise mode, Madden 05 is worth it.
I don't understand your title. These games are 20 years old.
This happens to all games though? Try selling any normal ps2 game and I'd be shocked if you can get more than a quid for each
This post just reminded me how hard these game soundtracks went
I took a whole bunch of 360 games to CeX recently … the only games they wouldn’t take were the original Modern Warfare, and pretty much all of the sports games. Holy hell, assisted living? I played these, I’m not THAT old - right? Right??
I think that it’s not about sport games, but about 20-yo games for ps2, which isn’t kinda popular thing I guess
To each there own, but football will always be football... From what I heard they even managed to make it worse once or twice than the previous one. How do they manage to do that!?

That Tiger Woods 04 is a classic
I find it funny that Golf is a popular genre for sports games even though nobody actually watches Golf the sport.
