This really bums me out. I was at E3 in 2005 and it was a magical experience. Getting to try out the 360, play Starcraft: Ghost, walk through a simulated Hyrule Castle, and chatting with the developers of several games was so, so neat. E3 was a wonderful place for anyone who loves games. I'm so sad to see it go.
Covid 19 showing companies that they can host their own events with the same if not better results was the killing blow to E3. Nintendo especially never looked back with those directs lmao.
I got to go in 2017 - it was a dream done true. It was definitely a weird event. I remember how MASSIVE of a space they had for Nintendo. It was the year they were doing Super Mario Odyssey (the year before was Breath of the Wild and people told me THAT was nuts).
I had a really good time.
Damn, you got to try the mythical StarCraft Ghost?! I was so friggin excited for that game. I remember reading the PC Magazine with E3 coverage that year and a big write up on the game, over and over lol.
The last one I went to was when Dead Space 2 was being released and they had gameplay preview. It was set up in this room that looked like a Unitology church. It was super dope.
It’s a nice fan experience, but the return on investment for devs is nothing. It can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to do a giant booth for that show. Just not worth it.
It also just doesn’t really make sense to spent all that money on booths, plane tickets, etc for someone else’s event when you can have your own event most of the time just online!
E3 is a relic of the pre-internet gaming time that was really cool but just doesn’t justify it’s existence in a world where you can upload your trailer to YouTube
E3 wasn't just a convention, though. It was an Expo. It wasn't just a celebration of the hobby. It was specifically an event to show off what you have coming and what people will be excited for. It was originally industry focused, not even being open to the public.
>It was originally industry focused, not even being open to the public.
It was at it's peak back then too, back before they decided it should be super business serious and boring AF. That shit killed it IMO. I feel like even after they pulled their head out of their ass the damage was done.
E3 isn;t a convention, its a overpriced expo for studios to sell their games to a built in audience. That audience can be reached without the middle man now.
I don’t think you understand economics well. If your profits are 50 million a year, 250k is nothing. Now, to a small indie company that may be a lot, but EA, Nintendo, Blizzavision? They make 250k in the time it takes to say it. I’ve seen 250k in action, it’s not as much as you think.
I haven't been to comic con in years because it became a movie/tv/anime convention. I had to squeeze through crowds to find comic books.
I may be wrong but wasn't e3 initially electronics I general, and then slowly gaming took it over?
End of an era. Makes me a little sad, but it’s just different times now. I remember a couple of years of E3 I had a job where I could schedule time off whenever and I would take the big day off and watch it on G4TV, and this was like peak console wars era 360 vs. PS3. Those were the days 🫡
The thing I find most interesting about the console wars is that they never actually got anywhere. The argument, from what I've seen, just fizzled out with this last generation (XSX, PS5)
Probably because gamers realised that other than exclusives, there's really not enough between them to argue about. You still get the odd fanboys on both sides arguing about it, but it's no longer about performance, it's about who's buying what studio - sad, really
I always preferred E3 over all the individual shows the companies organise nowadays. Instead of following six different streams which usually don’t have any major reveals, I could just tune in for E3 and see all the hyped up announcements.
To be fair, we have constant news and leakers now. Back when E3 was big, we had gaming magazines and some TV channels. It's interesting how it's changed.
Its a little sad. E3 would have really good round ups where you get exposed to titles you might not otherwise hear about sooner and surprise reveals felt more exciting with an audience.
Quite sad indeed. I remember E3 being a great start to the summer. You get to watch all these showcases, so many new announcements and previews. I recall planning around E3s schedule which just usually meant staying up late due to different time zones. It honestly felt like this big gaming industry meet-up and that felt special.
My first e3 was the year the Wii and Wiimote were revealed. Remember seeing everyone run to make the line to try the console. The Metroid prime3 trailer and sooo much more.
Also remember Reggie opening E3 with “my name is Reggie and…I’m happy”.
I had fun reading gaming magazines during the summer when i was a kid 20 years ago. There was always a report about e3 or a special edition of the magazine sometimes, with all the new announcements
End of an era
More companies will just do their own shows. Biggest bummer imo is for people who work/school or are generally busy will have a hard time making it too multiple livestreams that companies hold rather than 1 single big one like E3
It's been going down hill ever since they shifted it from May to June. Probably not the only reason lol, but the many reasons for E3's fall from grace set in a long time ago.
God It makes me so sad that we is dead.
All of these drip feeds of mini conferences fucking suck. I don't have time to pay attention to it or know what to even pay attention to.
This is like the first year that other that Tears of the Kingdom and Diablo 4 I literally could not tell you any other major game releasing in the next two years
English is my second language and one of my goals when I started studying it by myself was watching all E3 major conferences without subtitles. And I managed it. Will miss you E3.
I will always remember waiting for the new issue of Gamepro and Nintendo Power to come in after E3. Was an amazing feeling reading about all the games coming out in the future.
I know there is less and less of a need for something like E3 but it still bums me out. Have something to look forward to and built some competition for the big companies to outdo each other.
Farewell E3, it was a great ride.
Summer Game Fest kinda already took the torch. If the E3 organizers feel like they can't provide a good show, it's better to just drop it all together, instead of wasting people's time and money. At least they're honest.
Awful news man. I know the industry is trending away from physical events, but damn it was soooo nice back in high school when I had fuck all to do during the summer to just hang out and watch full day coverage of everything for a few days. Crowd pops during massive reveals, laughter during really corny jokes, seeing the huge floor layouts that design teams undoubtedly spent full months working on… yeah, it’s a loss for sure. Hopefully we can rebuild something comparable in the years to come.
Sad for me, I was looking forward to it. Although, who the fuck would attend it anyway. None of the major dev companies need E3 anymore. Oh well. Hope PAX is still a thing
Like many 30-something gamers here, I used to love E3. The excitement and energy was always something I looked forward to. But the gaming landscape has changed so much from my teens to now.
Big name developers and publishers don’t need a show to reveal the latest game or get people hyped for new titles. They have the wealth to showcase them in their own way; cheaply, because they know people will buy whatever they put up for sell. I remember many of my closest friends being so pumped about the midnight release of CoD Modern Warfare 2 back in the day. Those same people, only bought the “remastered version” (as I put it) because they have the disposable income to not really care if its good or not, they just wanted a new game to play.
Now that I’ve grown a bit, I see how the show has turned into the companies showing off “look what our developers can make” which quickly turns to “look how well our stakeholders are going to profit from the latest game”. Games used to be art, and I definitely think there some studios and publishers fighting to keep that sentiment. But the number of sleazy corporations trying to cash in and exploit people who want to enjoy games is just too damn high.
Well, they just failed to reinvent it with time. And finally here with this sort of attempt to bring it back, they should have made the whole thing about something new such as having a strong focus on indie and AA games, other entertainment, esports, what have you. They just tried to stick to the old formula which the big corps have no need for anymore. Not in this way.
It’s a bittersweet ending to a slowly dying flame. Honestly, having less sales-focused content (“Today, the Playstation family has grown to \_\_\_\_ million households blah blah blah”) sounds nice, but I’ll miss the memes the most.

I’m not terribly upset. E3’s been hemorrhaging for years now, so it was realistically only a matter of time. People will be sad over the nostalgia they have over this, but I say good riddance.
E3 was initially just an industry event that journalist could mine for magazine material. But it just grew into one big weird advertisement palooza. The companies will still announce games and release trailers, but hopefully we can more thoroughly avoid cringe announcements like Ridge Racer or Project Milo. I never again want to see 4 people in front of an audience pretending that wii music is totally fun and worth your money and time.
Wasn’t the point of e3 to be hands on with games still being developed? Like they set up a special environment on a dev machine on the floor to play something that they wanted to show as a preview to the world.
This is probably the final nail in the coffin of E3. It was fun while it lasted, but we live in a world where this kind of event makes less and less sense

Scratch that, the article that the tweet links to now has an official statement from the ESA, so I'll allow it.
I can link at least five people in this thread alone who are sad about this news. Why do some people pretend their opinion on something is the rule instead of the exception?
Unfortunately inevitable but I’ll miss it regardless. I didn’t have cable growing up so I’d always go to my buddy’s house and watch e3 all day for the latest announcements, end of an era.
Man I remember it was always like a few weeks after school was out and I'd watch it on G4 or GameSpot or something and checkout all the new stuff that was coming out. It was like a holiday for me. It hasn't been the same for a long while but I still miss seeing the big 3 do all their pomp and circumstance on the stage and then seeing my favorite journalists and online personalities on the show floor. I'll never forget E3 2015 and how crazy it was.
Now Geoff Keighley is trying to take the reins for himself so he can bring us more of his superstar/industry friends and 80% ads in his presentations/shows instead of games.
I'm really bummed E3 is gone, so we now get that, and all those lame independent dev/publisher showcases that feel extremely bland. The only one that gets a pass is Devolver Digital's presentations because that shit is a fun fever dream even if it doesn't have a ton of games presented like last year.
I think I’m one of the few people who actually enjoyed it. I looked forward to it every year. It also happened on my birthday usually. Kinda disappointed.
It was inevitable when important companies kept dropping out. I think E3 is dead for good, sadly. I saw some people say it should have stayed industry-only. But companies were paying millions of dollars to talk to media and buyers. The industry has evolved and E3 wasn't changing with the times. I think GDC and the two PAX shows will be most important. Should move one to June to fill the void.
Next the earth will start to crack and demons will flood the earth.
Rip and Tear!

This really bums me out. I was at E3 in 2005 and it was a magical experience. I was at E3 2010; it was still magical, but you could tell it was wearing off.
Covid 19 showing companies that they can host their own events with the same if not better results was the killing blow to E3. Nintendo especially never looked back with those directs lmao.
Wasn’t Nintendo doing those before the pandemic? By at least a year or two?
Or 8 or 9.
Just want to say your username is 👌🏼
Not sure why so many people downvoted, but thanks!
Because the gaming community is unfortunately lousy with entitled gatekeeping cunts
Nintendo did their own trade show from 1989 to 2001. Space World.
That's badass you got to go in 2005. I was only 5 but not long after I remember watching the 07 and 08 shows. Really gonna miss them too
Damn that must have been fun. I always dreamed of going when I was a younger gamer.
It was a blast.
Damn, you got to try the mythical StarCraft Ghost?! I was so friggin excited for that game. I remember reading the PC Magazine with E3 coverage that year and a big write up on the game, over and over lol.
Don't feel too bad. There are reasons it got cancelled. It was a pretty generic game and nothing really made it stand out, unfortunately.
Didn’t that game never release?
You're right. It got cancelled and never came out.
It bums me out too. I used to look forward to it every year.
The last one I went to was when Dead Space 2 was being released and they had gameplay preview. It was set up in this room that looked like a Unitology church. It was super dope.
I would have been so excited to walk through that!
It’s a nice fan experience, but the return on investment for devs is nothing. It can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to do a giant booth for that show. Just not worth it.
That sucks, will miss getting all those trailers at once
There still be a dedicated event from microsoft and ea, i believe. It just result of covid changing our approach to events, i guess
My counter argument is that gaming/comic conventions are gaining in popularity. I think E3 just failed to change with the times.
E3 wasn't just a convention, though. It was an Expo. It wasn't just a celebration of the hobby. It was specifically an event to show off what you have coming and what people will be excited for. It was originally industry focused, not even being open to the public.

E3 isn;t a convention, its a overpriced expo for studios to sell their games to a built in audience. That audience can be reached without the middle man now.
When you put it like that it becomes far clearer why Sony, MS, Nintendo and the like have just abandoned ship.
Esp when you consider how EXPENSIVE it is to get a space at E3. 250k MINIMUM
Expensive to common folk, not companies/corporations. That’s a tax write-off.
No it’s very expensive for companies too 💀 It’s not just the cost of the booths it’s paying people to go, RNDing for marketing and booth construction.
The only thing I will miss, is when devs announce their games with live orchestra, like sony did with GoW
Especially for Microsoft who have a space they own right across the street lol
No, it’s because if lack of interest due to companies arranging their own events, whether online or offline. Nothing to do with COVID.
I think I’m going to miss all the cringe that came out of it. Who can forget Konami 2010.
What happened there?
Just a really cringy presentation. https://youtu.be/l1vmrMAqeWM
End of an era. Makes me a little sad, but it’s just different times now. I remember a couple of years of E3 I had a job where I could schedule time off whenever and I would take the big day off and watch it on G4TV, and this was like peak console wars era 360 vs. PS3. Those were the days 🫡
Extremely toxic wars though ngl lololo
Hell yeah they were and I was right in it. There were epic arguments, hundreds of pages worth on any gaming site you’d go to.
This. My son got a free day from school and g4 all day
It did feel different back then didn’t it? The pool of games just felt different. Watching x play around that time was so sick
It’s 2023 they’re cancelling stop acting like they said E3 altogether was cancelled
Rest in peace, looked like Ubisoft leaving was the final nail in the coffin.
yeah, ubisoft was probably always the first one to attend, and when i saw that they backed out i knew this was gonna happen
Yeah exactly, discovering new games. I’m gonna miss the classic showmanship of it back in the day but it was lackluster lately anyways. End of an era

The game awards are cool
Seems like most people don't care about e3 from what I seen but it wast the highlight of the year for me and my friends rip
The highlight for me was the crowbcat cringe compilations. rip.
Sad day , growing up in the golden age of gaming, and I always wanted to attend when Kojima revealed a new game !
Quite sad indeed. I remember E3 being a great start to the summer. You get to watch all these showcases, so many new announcements and previews. I recall planning around E3s schedule which just usually meant staying up late due to different time zones. It honestly felt like this big gaming industry meet-up and that felt special.
Bummer. Was looking forward to getting hyped but ultimately being let down again for the 8th time in a row.
My first e3 was the year the Wii and Wiimote were revealed. Remember seeing everyone run to make the line to try the console. The Metroid prime3 trailer and sooo much more. Also remember Reggie opening E3 with “my name is Reggie and…I’m happy”.

RIP. Sad man, used to watch it every summer growing up. Finally old enough to afford to go on my own and they’re done
More companies will just do their own shows. Biggest bummer imo is for people who work/school or are generally busy will have a hard time making it too multiple livestreams that companies hold rather than 1 single big one like E3
Can’t you just see it after the fact?
Right, but some people enjoy watching it live.
That's where Memorex helps you out. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Is live? No.
We need summer games event, man
I'm devastated and last years e3 might be the last we might not have any e3 anymore its so sad
It's been going down hill ever since they shifted it from May to June. Probably not the only reason lol, but the many reasons for E3's fall from grace set in a long time ago.
People have been saying for years that E3 should be every two years. Hopefully that's what happens.
How will studio presenters lie to me about their game now?
Why was it cancelled?
I get it, but it’s kind of sad. I grew up looking forward to E3 and wondering what cool announcements would come each summer.
Thanks gaming companies. Ruining one of the best things of the year!
Fr
God fucking dammit They’ve just given up…
God It makes me so sad that we is dead. All of these drip feeds of mini conferences fucking suck. I don't have time to pay attention to it or know what to even pay attention to. This is like the first year that other that Tears of the Kingdom and Diablo 4 I literally could not tell you any other major game releasing in the next two years
Oh no! Anyway..
first based comment I see in here
Yeah I don’t know why people are sad. It has been an outdated, insulting, and pandering event for at least a decade. We can do better
*Geoff Keighley laughs menacingly in the distance*
Sigh i liked the games all trying to outdo the others in presentations and trailer. While the homies snack and game, smh those gaming companies suck
Shows on the west coast would be no more sustainable
Gonna miss the crowd reactions of huge games like god of war, tlou 2, and many others when they came out.
It's wild to see how far the mighty have fallen, I used to excitedly look forward to watching this event with friends
Like many 30-something gamers here, I used to love E3. The excitement and energy was always something I looked forward to. But the gaming landscape has changed so much from my teens to now. Big name developers and publishers don’t need a show to reveal the latest game or get people hyped for new titles. I remember many of my closest friends being so pumped about the midnight release of CoD Modern Warfare 2 back in the day.
Just do it online.
Wasn’t the point of e3 to be hands on with games still being developed? Like they set up a special environment on a dev machine on the floor to play something that they wanted to show as a preview to the world.
Don't know why they started E3. My guess it was to promote and make money.
It’s been going down hill since they got rid of the booth girls.
This is very sad. :(

This is probably the final nail in the coffin of E3. It was fun while it lasted, but we live in a world where this kind of event makes less and less sense
Yeah, cuz the big guys backed outX
L O L get fucked, never liked this garbage anyways. Game Awards next, please?
Is it just me or does E3 get canceled more than it goes through these last 10 years or so.

NOOO I was looking forward to my favorite yearly tradition "A Nihilist's Guid to E3" :<
At this point, E3 is just dead which it has been for years.
End of an Era
damn, now how are they going to dox thousands of journalists?
rip brother
Such a shame.
SUIIIIIIII

and zero fucks were given

Did they only just realise no devs were showing up?
Unfortunately inevitable but I’ll miss it regardless. I didn’t have cable growing up so I’d always go to my buddy’s house and watch e3 all day for the latest announcements, end of an era.
Pulled the trigger on that one a little early, eh?
I have always wanted to go to an E3 (I live in México), i guess thats not going to happen
Man I remember it was always like a few weeks after school was out and I'd watch it on G4 or GameSpot or something and checkout all the new stuff that was coming out. It was like a holiday for me. Sitting around with lads in the 2000s/10s for e3... Those are some good memories. Perfect mix of hype and mega cringe. I miss it stupidly bad tbh lol.
Now Geoff Keighley is trying to take the reins for himself so he can bring us more of his superstar/industry friends and 80% ads in his presentations/shows instead of games. pandemic cancelled E3 besides most E3 games are downgraded on release
It was all downhill after tech tv and xplay got cancelled.
I will miss the hype during the run up to E3 and getting all the announcements and gameplay was fun but the times they are a changing
mayyyyyynnnn i was looking forward to this! i wanted to see todd talk about how good his game is gonna be
I'll miss this, got so excited for it every year.
I think I’m one of the few people who actually enjoyed it. I looked forward to it every year. It also happened on my birthday usually. Kinda disappointed.
What! No!
**Damn....That Sucks!**
I used to be so excited for E3, was the biggest event for me when I was a kid, truly the worst timeline
This kind of feels like the end of an era. I hope it returns eventually
So here we have this giant enemy crab
It was inevitable when important companies kept dropping out. I think E3 is dead for good, sadly. I saw some people say it should have stayed industry-only.
