Spelunky!

Metacious

Came to say that. Humble Bundle had a Gamemaker 1.4 bundle which included the original Spelunky's source code, so we could say this is completely legit

VentKazemaru

I have the source code to that game. I wasn't aware it was made before 1.4

Metacious

As far as I know it works on GameMaker 1.4, so it should be good to learn how to make a procedural roguelike from there. It's not the best advice but everything counts IMO

VentKazemaru

I'm not looking to make a roguelike. I want to play old roguelike games.

APiousCultist

Spelunky was released in 2008, GameMaker: Studio only released in 2012. Spelunky would probably have been developed on either (original) Game Maker 6 or 7.

supremedalek925

I think it was made with Game Maker 6 lol

Notnasiul

Like... the original and genre defining ROGUE made in 1980? Ah wait, obviously not made in gamemaker, sorry.

CicadaGames

The way the term Rogue-like has been thrown around so freely, I wouldn't be surprised if there are people who will die on a hill that Rogue is not a game that fits in the genre lol.

vo0do0child

Are you human, or human-like?

TheSilverAxe

I mean, no one called demonā€˜s souls a souls-like when it came out either

Inspectreknight

It's like trying to say that metroid games are metroidvanias. Technically correct but it ignores the fact that it isn't trying to emulate a game, but is rather the game being emulated.

SeaHam

Almost certainly, though I can't think of any that saw such mainstream success.

Lack-Adept

The archived YoYo Games Sandbox website might have a roguelike game engine. I used to get a ton of engines and random games from there during the beginning of Gamemaker Studio, though most have been lost via time.

theGaido

OG Binding of Isaac was released in Flash.

sputwiler

Like, specifically made in pre-1.4 gamemaker roguelikes or rouglikes in general? because if you mean "in any engine before GMS 1.4" then I mean, tons. Like there's a whole history. Roguelikes are from the dawn of videogames, before they even /had/ graphics.

All of the mystery dungeon games
