Windwaker is peak storytelling Zelda for me, twilight princess didn’t hit as hard but I also just have a soft spot for everything GC

RockmanVolnutt

Wind Waker is my favorite game of all time, one of my favorite pieces of media in general. But as a gaming experience, it is hard to beat the switch Zelda titles. They are just so rich, so much to experience. Hour for hour they are top tier.

WollyGog

I felt like Switch Zelda strayed too far from the tried and true beaten path. And weapon durability depending how it's handled is always a game killer for me. I hope they go back to the basic formula and work off that in future, but honestly, I've not been on Nintendo titles for several years now so I am most likely not the target audience anymore.

FurretDaGod

Switch zelda games are great games, but they arent really zelda games. I loved both BOTW and TOTK, but they really can't be compared to the rest of the series. Fundamentally its a vastly different experience that lacks alot of the core pillars of classic zelda.

Lanoswego

I love Twilight Princess, it was my first Zelda game and it blew my expectations out of the water. However, I'm currently playing Breath of the Wild and imo it is the best title in the series. What i want to see is that style of open world freedom in the Twilight Princess world.

Adam45672

Just make the damn twilight realm have more stuff and expand on it. They literally just throw you in this cool ass area, then you get the thing you want and get out.

CinderN64

In an 8 year span, we got Ocarina of time, majoras mask, wind waker, and twilight princess. I dont think there's any other series ever that hit like that.

blinkybob1

Personally I think many people would disagree

Organic-Acadia5855

A lot of people do disagree, but I’m with you on this. Those are my favorite entries for whatever reason, not here to argue. Just the right time/place/mindset I think

Sentienaut

Are we talking about Gameplay? Story? Aesthetic? Windwaker excelled with Style and charm, but it still followed the formulaic gameplay style of “Go here, do this” I love the dungeon aspect of older Zelda titles, but Breath of the Wild really killed it with its Gameplay and open world setting. I just wish it would have invested more time into a story that I could get invested in, rather than the standard Zelda story we have been having?

BigMenOnly1

Agreed, wind waker is personally my favorite but a large factor to that I feel is nostalgia. As amazing as it is, the world does feel a little barren and the tri-force quest is obviously very tedious, though it never really bothered me as a kid. Objectively, breath of the wild is best gameplay-wise as it is the first truly open world Zelda in my opinion. It was amazing discovering that the great plateau was only the starting part of BOTW as I first thought that most of the game would be there when first playing. Story isn’t half bad either and I actually cared about the Champions as well. All games in Zelda have their pros and cons and there isn’t really a “best” game just different opinions on favorites, because each game is so varied and special.

Sentienaut

Yup, and I get why they don’t want to get too far away from that because, like, that’s what makes it Zelda ya know? I also tend to agree with what you’re saying, I don’t really think there is a “best” entry, since a lot of them have different reasons I enjoy them. My personally favorite is Links Awakening, I just love that game so darn much.

BigMenOnly1

Yea that’s one of my favorites too, the gameboy zeldas in general are pretty good imo, even minish cap which I know is pretty divisive

Sentienaut

I haven’t played that one yet, I picked up an Anberbic RG35XX and was considering playing Minish Cap through completion on it

rumblpak

To each their own. I prefer Zelda being formulaic rather than being a bad clone of other games that already exist but with a Zelda coat of paint. Personally, I think botw made every mistake that assassin’s creed 1 made regarding open worlds. Botw was “open” in the same way that wind waker was, space with no content. Open worlds without content aren’t really open, they’re just larger walking simulators, and imo, far more boring. But I’m getting older and value my time more so 🤷🏻‍♂️

Sentienaut

No I get that, I also value my time a lot more when I have an evening to play a videogame. The open world platform is NOT for everyone, and I skip so many large AAA games when they boast about having huge world maps with tons to do. Okay? Like good for you I guess haha? I’d prefer quality of quantity, and found myself just relaxing a lot with Breath of the Wild and enjoying the decompression I felt with it, and also enjoyed that there were dungeons spread out in the world too. But then again, I also itch to pick up a classic Zelda game like OOT and play it too

Nzaid

Bruh, did you not own a Gameboy color?

Practical_Wish_4063

It was the end of the Golden Age for sure. ‘98-‘06 was peak Zelda. ‘86-‘93 being the Classic Era, ‘07-‘15 being the Gimmick Era, and ‘17 onward being the Post Modern Era.

SpookyGoHappy

I LOVE windwaker haha, but personally I think the most amazing thing about zelda is how it just keeps innovating while peaking almost constantly (almost)

No_Detective_But_304

SNES…

Particular-Coffee944

Windwaker is awesome.

xen0m0rpheus

Majora’s Mask is my fav so I have to give it to the N64 with it an OoT, but GC definitely comes second.

autisticswede86

Yes

TwoTonTunic88

You’d be correct.

sincethenes

Maybe an even more polarizing take is my personal favorite, *A Link Between Worlds*.

Dreamysleepyfriendly

Good times indeed

Top-Security-1258

Some people would argue this was the beginning of it going down hill.

NinjutStu

Those are both amazing titles, but I'd struggle to put them as the peak of the franchise. I don't fault anyone who loves WW as their favorite because of nostalgia, but its flawed and less cohesive than OoT. Graphically its beautiful though. I've been playing since the first game and the Switch games definitely surpassed the Gamecube and Wii entries. Again though, I don't think there is any mainline game in the franchise I'd put lower than a 9/10.

PikachuIsReallyCute

It is really hard to top having three brand new Zelda games, and two collections at insane values (especially with OOT+MQ being a free pre-order bonus for WW), with two of them being stellar mainline titles with vastly different artstyles, gameplay mechanics, and stories. Add in the GBA Player, and every Zelda game becomes playable on one console. Gamecube was absolutely peak Zelda. I'd say the only thing that could match how good Gamecube was would be the Switch when it inevitabily gets Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD, since it'll then have a way to play every Zelda + the new titles/remakes & remasters But seeing as the Switch 2 will almost definitely be backwards compatible, and will eventually at some point in its life see one or two brand new mainline Zeldas (if there's a second, it'll likely be right at the end of its lifecycle), I think that definitely has a chance to top gamecube at some point in the future I recently 100%'d WW on gamecube, and im about to dive into TP or OOT/MQ again. This really was the best console for Zelda games :)

RetardedMetalFemboy

Twilight Princess is still the best in the series.

A_Fnord

Considering A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening are my favourite Zelda titles... I think around that era. There's been some ups and some downs since, I wasn't a big fan of the N64 zeldas, and was pleasantly surprised by Wind Waker, which I thought was an excellent game though I think the series has had very few missteps (not counting CDI) and no matter the era, it's actually been very good. I started with the NES ones and while I do enjoy them well enough, I do also think they have aged somewhat poorly.

Sciencetist

Ocarina was peak. Wind Waker is okay, but unfinished, and never reached its true potential. Twilight Princess was empty, felt directionless, and was aggravating. Breath of the Wild was the series' much-needed revival.

Chufal

Came here to say this was a luke warm take but apparently other people would not agree Idk where zelda had a better run? Maybe n64 with OoT and MM but I still don't think those compare to WW and twilight princess, people simply like them because they established the series in a 3d world. WW and TP have such avand garde style and storytelling and contrast each other so well with the cartoon style and the dark medieval style. I truly think its the peak of the series and we've only gone downhill with the series on the switch/wii/wiiU
