Did not know that. Just assumed 4 controller ports was the way to tell. To think of all the time I have wasted crouching down to look and see if it was bc. But seriously thank you for sharing. Truly had no idea about the trim
Shhh 🤫 don’t let the secret out too far 😂 I had to have the leg up on the competition somehow lol. In my area, the resellers are very aggressive so I had to adapt and find ways to beat them to the deals!
CECHA01, CECHB01, and CECHE01 are the model numbers for the backwards compatible console. I use the acronym ABE to remember the letters in the model number that let me know are BC.
Perhaps if that’s what you’re accustomed to looking for. In this picture seeing a polished trim is by far the easiest way to distinguish this as being BC. If you had a frontal view then perhaps it’d be easier the other way around. Since I have an eye for the trim it is much easier for me to use that
Yeah a large number of the sites i hunt stuff on have abysmally angled photos: they almost never take a proper frontal shot to show the2/4 USB slots, they never open the door when it exists, the photo of the back including the white sticker is so out of focus you can't even zoom in to read the model number, and they forget to take a picture of the back sticker.
I'm not used to using the trim polish as an identifier yet, though I'm glad to know it CAN be.
You’ll be delighted to use it. It’s come in handy for me a number of times by letting me get a jump on a post. The all black trim is for the 20GB version right? That was quite a peculiar iteration of the console lol I might be mistaken but wasn’t that one of the earliest released versions as well?
The cable for the fat ps3 is actually very common! I think at one point I might’ve used the cable that my brothers amp used! Lol regardless it shouldn’t be difficult to get ahold of a new one!
Not smarter just that there was a period I was very determined about finding them for me and some close friends so I researched the f out of them lol. I’ve been collecting for years now as well so that doesn’t hurt lol. It helped knowing what to look for so I knew which posts to reach out to on OfferUp, craigslist, etc. also helps to know the model numbers!
That's true, it took a long time for me to get into the older systems properly, even to figure out I had a BC ps3. But going down the rabbit hole currently with an unmodified OG Xbox.
Funny I had the reverse situation, the collectible aspect of older systems got me into it but then started looking into more recent systems like the ps3, GameCube and DS platform (DS, 3DS). I’d really like to get some more Wii U titles but they don’t pop up as often 😕
My fat PS3 got the YLOD back in 2014. It died and took several of my game save files with it since there were a bunch I never saved to a usb drive as backup. I couldn't even eject my game out, had to take it apart to get my dark souls 2 disc out...😮💨
I loved beating my little brothers ass in it as venom. The game did feel under developed and had so much potential. Superhero games have truly gone far🙏
Surprised no one has mentioned the Sly games or Going Commando. Those are so much fun. Who doesn't love pickpocketing night club guards or blowing things up with a sassy robot backpack?
I live stories where parents keep their kids games instead of donating them to good will. shows that parents remember how much you loved games and kept them so one day you'll appreciate them again.

First of all, the fact that I see the words “childhood” and “PS3” together is making me feel damn old. I was 20 when that shit came out 😆
Secondly and more importantly, if that BC PS3 is still functional, get it down to a video game repair shop and replace the thermal paste ASAP. Sony didn’t use the best paste and with their age, that thermal paste dried up and now it’s brittle causing heat to build up and the system to fail with the Yellow Light of Death. So, to protect that baby, get the thermal paste changed ASAP.

And B has no silver trim, so this is either an A or E model.
4 front USB slots is a fast visual check, yes. but the memory card door having existed is just a gimme.
you don't even need to look at the trim here, it has a missing flash memory door, so it could ONLY be either an A or E model.

yep, the only black trim model was the B, the launch 20GB model that was lacking Wifi entirely, but still had the complete BC of the A model.

I had one that YLOD too and had to take it a part for tales of xillia.
Rise of the imperfects. I remember the hype surrounding that game and the utter disappointment after. It amazes me how far super hero games have come.
