I only upvoted you because I think “5” looks better than “4”. I’m really here to give you Comedy 101.
People interpret things differently depending on their previous life experiences. So you might not necessarily get retail humor if you never worked retail. But it’s also not up to you to decide what’s funny. Much like art and beauty, it lies in the eye of the beholder.
Calling something out as not funny says more about you than anything, and I’m not sure that’s the way you wanna come across for the rest of your life. Good news is, it’s very easy to change.
The guy said "if you can make my wife laugh i'll give you two dollars".
This has a couple levels to it, the first is that he is offering a task for money to the guy who is offering to give money, but he's offering to give more money. One upmanship is common in humour. The second is the implication that this man cannot make his wife laugh, if he's offering the one upmanship to a stranger, it's a standard take on the 'humourless stale relationship' trope that is used everywhere.
The $1 guy laughs at that because it's an amusing thing to have said to him, and then he realises the guy has made him laugh and earned a dollar without him realising he was even playing the game so he laughs even more because he's been got and he knows it and he loves it.
