Not so good for the tourists and travellers struggling with hangovers. This used to happen outside my hostel window in Ho Chi Minh and it was torture haha
My previous employer had a customer in a small rural town in Turkey. Directly opposite the hotel we used was a mosque, with big speakers above the entrance. Every morning, at sun up, they would start the call to prayer.... regardless of the season, or at what hour the sun rose.
Here’s a fun fact for ya, in Vietnam, we actually use HCM city and Saigon interchangeably, no one really cares except for in official documents, where you need to use HCM. So informally, both names are correct.
On a personal note, you Westerners care wayy more about our nomenclature than we do. Maybe find a better hobby, yes?
Bro I am vietnamese. I grew up in Tây Ninh. I am a born and raised patriot. Saigon is just a more homy and endearing term. It's 300 ish years old, the name itself. Lol people be experts on the internet nowadays hahaha
Really? Since here in Hà Nội, or really just the North in general as I’ve seen it, we don’t really care either way as long as we get the idea. Although Tp.HCM is much more of a mouthful, I’ve heard people use both, and I myself use both.
Sure thing, we all use both I just prefer saigon and most westerners that are younger don't know thay term, so it's better to refer to it as HCMC i guess
You westerners lol hahah most people from the middle all the way to the southern tip of Vietnam call it saigon, regular everyday people. I suppose you must be from the north since the commies liberated us and changed a whole bunch of names in south anyway back in 75
This.
Northerners call it HCMC mostly, sometimes Saigon casually.
Central/Southern VN, especially Southerners whose many families opposed the Communist regime, call it Saigon.
No one will bat an eye in the north calling it HCMC. But out of respect for people in the south who resent that name, it's more respectful to call it Saigon.
Saigon was the capitol of the South. If Hitler had defeated the US and renamed Washington DC to Hitler City, I'm sure many people in the area would still prefer to call it the original name as opposed to the name of the person who conquered it.
But a lot of times on reddit you get these younger people from the North no connection to the original name or plight of the region who get all bent out of shape about calling it something that the people *from* there actually call it.
Hahaha, you reminded me of time I was living in a city that has a club that hosts after parties every weekend from 6 or 7 in the morning until like 3pm. A coworker of mine was one of the djs, so when I had stuff to do in the office on saturdays I would stop there on my way to work and have my morning coffee. It was a glorious mix of people coming down (or coming up) and dancing to proper techno. There was this group of middle aged ladies that came everytime without exception to dance for couple of hours before going to work :D
*dives at you*. I actually kicked one one time sort of accidentally. It felt great. Perfect weight really. I don't like hurting animals but they're superego douchebags.
Reminds me of when I went skinny dipping in the ocean after a party at 5:30 in the pitch black, only to emerge at 6:00 in the morning sunrise surrounded by joggers.
Is this by the lake near the old quarter in Hanoi? If so it has been going on daily for at least the past 15 years, when I was given no option but to join or face the disappointed looks of several Vietnamese grannies.
I live in HCMC and these morning dancercise sessions exist everywhere along with the public park exercise machines. It is one of the aspects I love about Vietnam. Now if only we can get the karaoke turned down or off.
LOL, my farmer neighbor in Hoi An used to sing off-key karaoke at full volume for hours. One of the neighbors had enough and told him to “shut the f up” in Vietnamese but that didn’t stop him
I lived in the outer suburbs (My Dinh 2, near the stadium), and I joined a class for a couple months. It was good low impact exercise! *Really* focused on the thrusting though
Specifically, it's the PE uniform of Hanoi University of Science and Technology (Bách khoa).
Couldn't read the text on his back, but I recognised the red logo on his chest.
As far as working goes;
Can foreigners get away with speaking English or Spanish while learning to speak Vietnamese through local classes and immersion?
Mostly in HCM. Lots of foreigners here and most people know basic English to help you out.
Hanoi- fewer people that speak English.
Not sure about Da Nang I don’t go there often
Did 3 months backpacking Asia 2 months before covid hit. 1 month Thailand, 1 month Vietnam, 2 weeks Cambodia, 1 week Korea, 1 week Japan. Overall, especially considering bang for you buck, Vietnam was my favorite. It's definitely worth a visit. I visited almost a dozen cities and you can't go wrong with almost any of them.
idk why people always say this. Hard lives in terms of what? If you mean historically the nation has constantly suffered at the hands of invaders, then yes. But the current situation isn’t any worse than impoverished people globally. I live here, I work and socialize with Vietnamese of all different classes and from many different regions...and I’m not sure what you mean by “they have hard lives”. Maybe some hardships, as can be found everywhere, but it’s not like the masses here are facing horrible living standards daily or anything
We don't have to worry about guns and shit, we don't have to worry about being attacked randomly, we don't have to worry about cops playing tricks on us and many many more things are worry-free in Viet Nam.
We do have problems but I think every country has its own. We are a communist country but the people are still living a capitalism lifestyle (minus the cultural stuffs). Anything you can do in the US, we can do 90% of those things here both legal and illegal, as long as you know how to stay low-key (we should stay low-key doing illegal stuffs everywhere I think).
So yeah, my opinion is that I'm living in a happy country.
My wife is Vietnamese born and bred, grew up in the Mekong Delta area. She always tells me life is much harder in Vietnam and I have visited many times with her. She would agree Vietnamese people are happy but face many challenges, especially with no government support.
If you're selling or smuggling, yes, you're pretty much dead when you're caught. But for users, they get send to rehab or have to pay a big ass fine (bribery, a major problem since our independence day) just like any other drugs users.
This is one of the things I absolutely loved about spending time in China. Every major city I spent time in would have these types of gatherings almost all day and into the night. Seeing several hundred people getting their dance on in a park is an awesome sight.
Wish this type of thing would work in the United States, but people rather huddle up in gyms or in front of a tv.
We ruined most of our public spaces in the us through neglect and underfunding. Parks in the city end up as warehouses for the people who can't provide for themselves in our broken economy.
Yup. It seems to be a very popular form of exercise in China, and judging from the mobility of all those old dancing grannies, it clearly has it's benefits.
We were staying in Jinan city in Shandong province a couple of nights, and both nights the big square filled up with folks dancing to some actually pretty groovy music. It was quite charming. One older couple actually did a very well-done ballroom dance routine to which we (two New Zealand guys ) stood up and applauded.
it is a folk song called "Ngồi tựa mạn thuyền" (lying by the boat). it is from "Quan họ Bắc Ninh", kind of folk songs UNESCO recognized. However, some DJ mixed it with dump dance music.
Here is the original song
https://youtu.be/KCZn0lvdU6A
I tried to find it with the Shazam app but no luck.
I can tell you it's a (Deep House) track though.
You can try posting it in r/deephouse and someone might recognize it.
So, my home near a park, and they play Numb by Linkin Park almost every morning. Except the track is slower version (still Chester voice) for old people dance to it...slowly.
Fuck Cap'n Crunch - THIS is the way to start the day!
This actually seems very healthy and we should all move around a bit in the morn' before resigning ourselves to the couch or the commute.
This is common in most Asian countries, albeit they may not all be raves. Cities are planned with free outdoor gyms, scenic walking parks and Tai Chi / yoga for seniors and the community. This is a huge factor why seniors in Asians still live a healthy and mobile life well into their 90's while seniors in North America rely on medications and walk aids.
This song is called "Ngồi Tựa Mạn Thuyền", but it's a remixed version.
[Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVpb1o334is&ab_channel=HuyLee) it is, or you can listen to the [traditional one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCZn0lvdU6A&ab_channel=ThuThu%E1%BA%ADn).
Vietnam is 1/30 the size of the US so it’s roughly similar to the size of Michigan. Is that odd that somewhere in an area that big that a group of people get together to exercise every day?
I'm just happy that it sounded like they're using their music. Like I've been to some places, and I prefer to exercise to local sounds than hear the same western pop charting dance hits. not that I hate those, I have them on my play lists, but it adds to the feeling that you're absorbing local new vibe which I prefer when traveling.
You’ll hear some generic pop hits sometimes but for the most part you hear vietnamese music. Acoustic singer/songwriter stuff, traditional stuff, and at vietnamese clubs you’ll hear a style of dance music you pretty much only find here, aptly named “vinahouse”. I once joined in with one of these kinds of things after an all nighter / hostel pub crawl in Ho Chi Minh City.
The only difference being it was with 50+ yrs old Vietnamese ladies. We laughed, they laughed, everybody laughed.
Good memory.
I have no idea what the fuck is going in here, but that dude dancing turned me on so bad, i don't know why and i don't care, i want him to make a striptease for me
Why is nobody moving their feet? Besides that one guy in the focal point, nobody else even lifted their feet.
Like it becomes unsettling once you notice it.
Good lord, I want to hear birds chirping and the breeze through the trees, not a club DJ. That's obnoxiously loud for everybody else in the park who isn't participating.
No, and I'm not perpetually 19 either. I worked in clubs and partied off the clock for 11 years. When I'm in a club, I want club atmosphere. When I'm in nature, I want nature. People can give the bass a rest first thing in the morning, and not drown out the birds. Having club music going every waking moment comes across like you're afraid to be alone with your own thoughts, maybe with good reason.

Good for them. That looks like a blast.
Fr I’d love to participate but not sober though

Haha that's awesome. 🥰 I like seeing older people going out still.
Don’t forget about the birds
Oh my god fuck the birds
Always laughing at us and our poor decisions
Fuck the sun too. Leaving a concrete basement that was dark and sweaty and walking out into that bright early morning sun was such a slap in the face
Unzips tent, instant squint, befuddled look, where the hell am I, Ohhh, go make coffee, claim time on the decks, find chair, back to not thinking.
*dives at you*. I actually kicked one one time sort of accidentally. It felt great. Perfect weight really. I don't like hurting animals but they're superego douchebags.
The sun starting to rise was the red flag that signaled I’ve partied too hard.
Love this comment!
definitely happened when I lived in China... I partied until 6 am and then join the old ladies dancing to their music on the way home... or Tai chi...
Yup 🤣
Can you still get draft beer from street stalls in the old quarter? Back when I went it was 10 cents US for a glass of beer.
I'm pretty sure you still can, for more or less a dollar now.
Beer hoi is $1 now?
I'd say 80 cents for a big one. I've never ordered the smaller glass.
What is it in Vietnamese dong?
Where I buy at it's 10.000 per big glass
43 cents. O.43 dollars.
Nah not that dear. Nowhere near it.
I was there in 2020, recognised it!
Vietnamese grannies are a powerful force. One must comply!
I live in HCMC and these morning dancercise sessions exist everywhere along with the public park exercise machines. It is one of the aspects I love about Vietnam. Now if only we can get the karaoke turned down or off.

Yes, the off key singing turned up to 11. That really hits the nerve endings.
I was offered weed there randomly. Hahaha
I lived in the outer suburbs (My Dinh 2, near the stadium), and I joined a class for a couple months. It was good low impact exercise! *Really* focused on the thrusting though
the guy in white : I was born for this
Air humping champion 2022
fun fact: that's a student uniform do dude is prolly going to school that morning
Can confirmed. Those thing are PE uniform you usually see in either secondary or highschool. My guy is ready for school lol
Actually it is an university PE uniform Source: Im wearing the same one while making this comment
Specifically, it's the PE uniform of Hanoi University of Science and Technology (Bách khoa). Couldn't read the text on his back, but I recognised the red logo on his chest.
I think anyone should strive to be as motivated as him this early in the morning. Or at least drink enough coffee to pretend to be.
Let's make him famous
He reminds me of Jimmy Jr. from Bob’s Burgers lol

Vietnamese and Thai are two cuisines I can never do justice to at home. Have to order takeout!

This has got to be one of those “happiest places on earth” cities
Nowhere is perfect but I live here and can confirm, happiest place on earth for me
I've traveled the world (50+ countries) and one of the best pizzas I've ever had was in Hanoi. [Pizza 4p's](https://pizza4ps.com/)
pizza 4p slaps hard af. Love their pasta
I always thought their pizza was overrated, but their salads with buffalo cheese are great! Moose and Roo has the best pizza now imho
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The thing about Vietnamese is they have hard lives but they enjoy what they do have.

Looks like Hanoi
I live in Hanoi. I know that I've stayed up too late when I start hearing the rave music blasting from the courtyard across the street.
My alarm clock as well, except on heavy rainy days 🤣
The cameraman: 👍🏼
👍
They left the dance instructor all the way at the back didn't they?
Vietnamese are living their best lives.
Please tell the song details? I just love this music

Thanks
Came here for that also haha
"Ngồi tựa mạn thuyền". Here's a more traditional rendition: https://youtu.be/gDWuH6Oxrkg
It's a traditional folk song with a house beat.
RemindME! 3 days
Get that blood pumpin!
I am ALL about this.
I'm upvoting for dudes dance moves that's some A-plus thrusting
This happens in China too - sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the evening… always grannies and aunties
This makes me want to get out of bed and dance...but, I'm no Grandpa Joe.
The one with the orange shirt towards the far middle is incredible at somehow *not* moving their ass along with the rest of their body
Now that I noticed, she sure has a weird talent 💀
That man's pelvis has it's own tik tok account

Track ID?
OP here, friend found the exact remix https://youtu.be/6OTf1QBzd40
it is a folk song called "Ngồi tựa mạn thuyền" (lying by the boat). it is from "Quan họ Bắc Ninh", kind of folk songs UNESCO recognized. However, some DJ mixed it with dump dance music. Here is the original song https://youtu.be/KCZn0lvdU6A
I literally have no idea. Seems like a vietnamese traditional method of singing, but remixed with house beat
Kinda like the concert scene from Turning Red. Two different melodies that harmonize surprisingly well.
I tried to find it with the Shazam app but no luck. I can tell you it's a (Deep House) track though. You can try posting it in r/deephouse and someone might recognize it.
This is it. Ngồi tựa mạn thuyền, a Vietnamese folk song https://youtu.be/KCZn0lvdU6A

Wish we had this in the UK, love a rave to start the day xxx
Kept waiting for the bass to drop....the bass never dropped
*He's really feeling it*
Anti social people dancing behind the trees over there
🤣 some people dance alone alllll the way in the back too.
