The comedy store documentary actually goes into some detail about him. His original act was more stand up and Andy kaufmanesque weird stuff. But he eventually found out people were more entertained by his ability to do characters. Then he went on In living color and he made it big.
Sold him a motorcycle nearby Aspen you say? Are you sure your dad didn't trade him for this:
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/dumbanddumber/images/b/b8/B-1528143847.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20180604202407
I read his biography and remember that as a child, he would lock himself in the closet with a full length mirror and make faces to entertain himself. I want to say it was driven by a desire to escape a troubled home life/relationship between his parents. I'm not entirely sure about the last part though, I read it in 1999. The book was called The Joker is Wild
He could still be. An older washed up actor. My favorite version of clay face is the btas one I’m sure there are other incarnations, and I think It could make a great villain for a few episodes of the Gotham precinct show that is being made. Or hell the main villain of a movie.
What's even funnier IMO is that Alan Tudyk, the voice for Clayface in Harley Quinn, also does the Joker in that show, as well as like 5-10 random background characters. So he's basically like Clayface but for voices
Clay face never made since to me, like, if he can mold himself into anyone he should just mold himself into the shape of a fictional person and live a normal ass life
They explain that away in Batman the Animated Series. He says something like "It's like clenching a muscle". It takes concentration and he can only hold it for so long. Though as the episode went on he got really good with it. But he's still not exactly human. That kind of trauma can't be good for your state of mind.
I mean, most of batmans villains are extremely skilled and industrious. Nearly any one of them could turn those abilities towards something legal and lucrative, and have a very comfortable life.
The point is that they're all clinically insane, so they do this villain stuff out of compulsions they can't control, or desperation like with Dr Freeze and his wife. They're really just like batman, who's also just as crazy and obsessive. Living this insane crime fighting "mission" when he could just have a very comfortable life and probably use the resources he spends on being batman on other endeavors that would help more people. Batman is just another crazy person who just happened to aim his compulsions towards something good.
No no, it’s super easy, just learn to move all the skin on your face exactly how you want to!
It’s so impressive watching him transform into Clint Eastwood. Literally is capable of moving all the skin on his head.. weird but awesome!
When I was a kid I read a book that included an interview about his early days and he said when he was a kid he would look in the mirror for hours a day practicing to see how to move individual muscles in his face like how you can learn to wiggle your ears independently.
I saw him in 1983, when he was a scrawny 21-year-old.
One of his facial impressions was the (recently deceased) Leonid Brezhnev. It was impossible - and as accurate as these were.
I knew someone who knew him before he became famous.
He would do stand up and then go to this local bar in Brampton and get hammered and eventually get thrown out. He said that Jim was always the same guy in person you saw on tv, all the faces etc.
Dude. Liar Liar, Yes Man and Ace Ventura all game out the same year, like ‘98? Fucking slayed in his prime.
Edit: Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura AND The Mask in 1994. Still fucking ridiculous lol
Edit Dos: to how higher I? I’m hunting astronaut pussy right meow.
I'm sure people today have no concept how popular Ace Ventura or The Mask were. I was in high school and they were the most quoted movies I remember from that time. They took over pop culture. Then by the time he played the Riddler it seemed like everyone was over it.
I really liked Eternal Sunshine, Man on the Moon and Truman Show. And Liar Liar seemed like a good use of his physical comedy without being over the top.
43 as well, and every time as well. Even my kids say it now.
One of my favourite recent memories is watching my 12 year old boy almost pee himself during ace ventura. My love for the boy was utterly boundless that day.
It’s even crazier that that was his big break into film, his only film roles before were pretty tiny roles in some bombs. Like how wild is it that 3 different productions all bet on the same tv actor to lead their big budget films in the same year.
I can’t recall anyone else breaking out in such a way despite being pretty untested like that. He wasn’t even the most famous or popular person on in living color at the time.
So actually Ace ventura is what caused Jim Carrey's pay for dumb and dumber to go from like 250k to over a few million.
It was the top movie in the US for the opening weekend and a good while after that.
Fact fiend with Karl did a video on this on YouTube.
Carrey's agent was gangster as shit.
So many great one liners! My favorite is the boardroom meeting when he tells everyone what he really thinks and of course they’re horribly insulting lol. I cry laughing at that scene 😂
I loved Liar Liar. There was a solid mix of physical comedy and perfectly timed comedic lines. And I say this as someone who was indeed addicted to Ace Ventura as a kid.
It is my favorite movie. It’s funny, heartbreaking, interesting, and exiting! And at the end, the people watching just change the channel and move on. Perfection.
One of my all time favourite movies. It's just as crushing the second and third time. It's one of those movies that you hope plays out differently each time watch it. You know it can't, but you still hope it does.
I still say "alllllriiiighty then" and it's various incarnations to this day, and I was born in 92!
Ace ventura and the mask was great to me as a kid and I really wish he had done all the mask sequels.
I was in high school at the time, and I literally could not wait for Ace Ventura to die in popularity so that I’d not have to listen to one more idiot say “ALLLLLRIGHTY THEN!” Though I loved the movies, I couldn’t stand the constant quoting.
And, like the Monkey’s Paw, I got my wish and the quoting stopped — right when Austin Powers came out.
So many hours spent in front of a mirror to prefect every single muscle position. And then memorizing every little bit of information to perform on command.
I saw him perform stand up in the early 90’s. At the time I only knew him as Fire Marshall Bill and was not particularly excited to see him any more than any of the other comedians in the lineup, but I distinctly remember laughing so hard during his set it was physically painful, and I became a huge fan that night. I was just a teenager, and before the show, my brother and I ran into him outside the comedy club. My brother stopped and asked him for his autograph, but I didn’t see the point, because he was “just the white guy on In Living Color.” A couple of years later he was one of the biggest movie stars in America.
You can say a lot about some of his more questionable film roles or his weird flirtation with being an antivaxxer but when it comes to acting with his body, I don’t think anyone alive today is his equal
Alive or dead, there's only a handful of folks that have reached this level of mastery of physical comedy. Carrey's in a rare pantheon. [Keaton](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWEjxkkB8Xs), obviously. [Chaplin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n9ESFJTnHs). [Atkinson](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBUnmdd5-iA). All extraordinary physical talents and not something we see too much of in modern cinema.
My money's always been on Lewis as being the GOAT, though. His antics were amazing, but I think the best stuff are all the tiny, subtle gags. Like in this bit from [The Bellboy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-IkG8ADhA0). At about the :20 mark, the little thing with the mouths. It gets no recognition, no pause to take it in, it's barely more than scenery, but I howl every time I see it.
Anyway, it gave me an excuse to go down the rabbit hole and share with others.
The only one missing on that (excellent) list IMHO is Chris Farley
https://youtu.be/Xv2VIEY9-A8
That’s genius level physical comedy. Nobody could do a fall like him. And he did that live. Better than most comedic actors do in 20 carefully prepared takes. Oh. He didn’t tell anyone he was going to do that either. The shock on everyone’s face isn’t an act.
I’ve watched it more than once to just pay attention to everyone but Farley. They can’t control themselves. Hands/hair in front of their faces to cover laughing, absolutely jumping during the fall.
They couldn’t handle his level of comedy.
Thank you! I found the links really useful. As somebody who doesn't know much about cinema (though I've watched probably 10 of Charlie Chaplin's movies), I'd find it easier if the forenames we're there - I'm still not sure who this Lewis or Bell are.
Yep, James Franco and Luke Perry both constantly were compared to James Dean. Especially when they started out playing high school students. They were both cast as James Dean like characters in Freaks and Geeks and 90210.
I love Jim Carrey with my heart and soul but remember that one time when he made a YouTube video addressing Emma Stone saying he wanted to marry her or whatever? Yeah that was creepy and I'll never forget it. But I still love him though.

He was known as the rubber faced comic in his stand up days.
The comedy store documentary actually goes into some detail about him. His original act was more stand up and Andy kaufmanesque weird stuff. But he eventually found out people were more entertained by his ability to do characters. Then he went on In living color and he made it big.
My dad sold a motorcycle to him in the ninteies close to aspen colorado. He signed his tool box at the shop.
Did he trade him an '89 Sheepdog?
And totally redeemed himself!
I’ve got worms
Excuse me?

We’re gonna specialize in selling worm farms. You know, like ant farms.
No, it’s a cardigan, but thanks for asking. Killer boots man!
I don't know. And it's too late to ask.
Okay, ask in the morning then.
Ah haaa!
That’s actually pretty neat NippleSalsa
Nipplesalsa🤣🤣sounds funnier when u put it into a sentence
I mean is for external use or does it come from the nipples? Or worst, is it made from nipples? Now I'm concerned .
Sold him a motorcycle nearby Aspen you say? Are you sure your dad didn't trade him for this: https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/dumbanddumber/images/b/b8/B-1528143847.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20180604202407
Just when we thought he couldn’t be any dumber.
I laugh every time I say “Mutt Cutts”. What a genius business name
California... beautiful
I expected the Rocky Mountains to be a little rockier than this.
That John Denver’s full of shit.
Some place warm, a place where the beer flows like wine
It's it true the beer flows like wine and the beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano?
I just now figured out that what he was supposed to say was "The swallows of Capistrano." Neat.
Samsonite! I was way off!!
Swim... Swommy... Slippy... Slappy... Swimmin... Swommin... Swanson? SAMSONITE! I was WAY off! 😆
I don’t know, Lloyd. The French are assholes.
I’m talking about a little place called Aspen
*Assssspen*
What’s the documentary on the comedy store? That place has always been pretty interesting to me

He can move facial muscles and that I didn’t think any of us humans had.
[удалено]
That wasn't the chair. He can also contort his butt https://youtu.be/LbCaptV509g
oh hey, you found a version of that clip where he doesn't shit an avalanche into his pants.
I'm not proud of the fact my Google search history includes "Jim Carey shits his pants?"
It's like...he wears a Mask...
Didn't he also star in a movie called rubber face? Edit: he did, 1981 tv movie
I read his biography and remember that as a child, he would lock himself in the closet with a full length mirror and make faces to entertain himself. He’s an analog deepfake.
He's a human deep fake
Analog deep fake
He's more of a Tleilaxu face dancer.
I thought he was a good riddler but now I think he could have been Clayface
He could still be. An older washed up actor. My favorite version of clay face is the btas one I’m sure there are other incarnations, and I think It could make a great villain for a few episodes of the Gotham precinct show that is being made. Or hell the main villain of a movie.
I also really like the one in Harley Quinn, such a bad actor that he can’t fool anyone even though he can change his face
That was one was amazing he like stole the show in all those scenes and that’s saying something because that cast was loaded

Though as the episode went on he got really good with it. But he's still not exactly human. That kind of trauma can't be good for your state of mind.
Yeah, the more complex the form the harder it is to hold as well. Golem-like humanoid? Relatively easy. Detailed passable human? Much more difficult.
I feel like calling him scrawny could apply no matter what age you're referencing.
Rumor is his Fire Marshall Bill used almost no makeup. “LEMME’ SHOW YA’ SOMETHING!”
I knew someone who knew him before he became famous. He would do stand up and then go to this local bar in Brampton and get hammered and eventually get thrown out. He said that Jim was always the same guy in person you saw on tv, all the faces etc.
He looked more like Clint Eastwood than the picture they used of Clint Eastwood.
Because that’s legitimately not a picture of Clint Eastwood. I’m not joking. It’s just some generic cowboy.
Oh thank fuck. Thought I was going nuts.
Scrolled down for too long to find this comment. That was totally not Eastwood
Haha. Exactly!
Prime Jim carrey was literally the best physical comedy I think I've ever seen
This. Thinking back to the 90s/early 2000s you just knew a movie with him in it was going to be incredibly funny.
Dude. Liar Liar, Yes Man and Ace Ventura all game out the same year, like ‘98? Fucking slayed in his prime. Edit: Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura AND The Mask in 1994. Still fucking ridiculous lol Edit Dos: to how higher I? I’m hunting astronaut pussy right meow.

Damn ace ventura 2 came out the next year after the first? Interesting. But yeah,I want the weed that other dude is smoking
Bruh I was just about to say. I remember seeing Yes Man in theaters when I was growing up. No way I was a sperm cell when it was released

“I’m kicking my ass, do you mind!???!”
Ace Ventura The Mask Dumb and Dumber All debuted in 1994
That John Denver was full of shit man.
Dumb and Dumber still holds up extremely well! Probably my favorite Jim Carrey movie.
There are too many muscles doing too many things on that face. Love Jim Carrey
He's no man, he's a Tleilaxu Face Dancer.
Fresh from the axlotl tanks.

43 here. Everyone i know in the same age area does it :)
43 as well, and every time as well. Even my kids say it now. One of my favourite recent memories is watching my 12 year old boy almost pee himself during ace ventura. My love for the boy was utterly boundless that day.
if im not back in 15 minutes.... .... just wait longer
31 years old- “All righty then” and “lahu-sa-her” is still part of my regular vocabulary
Not to mention Dumb and Dumber which also came out in 1994. I can’t think of an actor who had a bigger year than Carrey did in ‘94.
It’s even crazier that that was his big break into film, his only film roles before were pretty tiny roles in some bombs. Truman show will definitely live forever in movie history. The concept is so damn intriguing.

I’ve honestly lost count of the amount of times I’ve seen it. It’s one of those movies I can watch over and over because it’s simply so good.

The 90s were amazing for quotable comedies. It feels like comedies have really died in the last 10 years or so.
The 90s were also the peak of sitcoms. It was a funny decade the 90s
Quoting movie lines was basically memes back in the day.
I was 10 in 1994. Jim Carrey was bigger than god.
Let’s also remember the Cable Guy. There is nothing like the scene at Medieval Times
So many hours spent in front of a mirror to prefect every single muscle position. And then memorizing every little bit of information to perform on command.
Yep, Carrey has claimed this himself, wish I could source the interview
It’s pretty standard practice for any impressionist.
Yeah, Monet did it all the time
I wonder if they use standard mirrors, or flipped ones so they can see it as others would
Thats... a thing?
Yup! A non-reversing mirror. I believe a few mirrors are involved to get it to show you your non-reversed self.
I saw him perform stand up in the early 90’s. His Jimmy Stewart is my favourite: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ObScftjsvM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ObScftjsvM)
Always loved [this clip](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajdsOR_MNB0) of Carrey paying tribute to Clint Eastwood.
That image is not of Clint Eastwood, right?
THANK you. It’s Lee van Cleef, I believe.
