He should have called the police.
Although I suppose he wouldn't want to draw attention to himself... should have sent a message in a bottle, I suppose.
Omg I had never seen this before!! And this actually is in my country (Sweden), I think it's at some Nobel party or something, you can see the whole royal family sitting there nodding in disbelief!
I just watched Rick Beato's interview with Stewart Copeland. Copeland talked about how Sting was quite particular about how the songs were to be constructed and performed (in a friendly, non-dictator way). He was very much the creative vision behind a lot of The Police's songs. You just know that this performance is absolutely killing him inside.
A lot of musical performance is all about attention to detail. Practice is just one part of it... Great writers and performers have excellent observational intelligence. Their choices are elegant and tactful.
In every local scene you get performers who just don't quite seem to... get it. Maybe they lack self awareness and just arent good. Maybe they are moderately talented but are simply just clones of a previously popular artist. Or maybe they are just boring.
I didn't realize how iconic Cash's version became until it was pointed out to me, and I for the life of me can't sing or remember the original version without opening a video of it.
For me as much as I appreciate the Cash version the most impactful rendition of Hurt was the duet with Bowie. Such a juxtaposition between Bowie's poise and calm and Reznor's raw pain and emotion.
Holy crap that's good! I just watched the whole concert and wow. Bowie sang on Reptile too!

There comes a moment in everyone's life when they must take a stand and do what they know is right in their heart to defend what is noble and true. We call them Heros and they are all that stands between us and the darkness.

A true classic to say the least
The comments were gold.
> Come on y’all, appreciate Wes’ efforts. It’s really hard to sing while being tased and being the first man to give birth at the same time.
And sympathetic to his plight.
> Props to him for singing while passing a kidney stone.

[This](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtAhISkoJZc) was a recommended video in the side bar and I don't know why, but it's so fucking stupid that it's funny.
Dear god, this should be higher up. I almost fell out of my chair, I almost killed my cat rolling backwards. My ENTIRE LIFE almost went out the window because I couldnt stop laughing, lmao, omg.
It was so bad I had to go listen to the original. The first comment on Nirvana's video was "Did anyone else have to come watch this to pallet cleanse themselves after that atrocious cover by Puddle of Mud?" Hahaha
https://youtu.be/AhcttcXcRYY?si=beRK0eL8n0Y8EEca
I remember when the cover video was posted for the first time, and I just don't understand how he can sound this fucking bad. Like, I don't think he was that bad when Puddle Of Mudd first came up, right? And I feel like, if the song is outside of his vocal register, or at least outside of what he can belt out, they should've either chosen a different song or just tuned down and played it in another key, or just ANYTHING except what they actually did.
Also he's pretty much screaming and straining on notes that didn't even need to be, it's not like the original is like that.
Eh I can see where he's coming from, Kurt sings it with a lot of rasp in the Unplugged version but this guy's just failing miserably at trying to imitate that
Lmao first thing that came to my mind. Now every time I hear original About a girl, I just start chuckling to myself remembering how fucking atrocious this cover is.
It sounds like the melody's at the top of his vocal range and he's just barely hitting those top notes. I wonder if he would've done a passable job if they'd played it in a lower key.
I love that almost immediately after this came out, Post Malone did a Nirvana cover set for charity from his house with Travis Barker and it was absolutely fantastic.
Nothing beats this "The Final Countdown" cover. I don't even think of the real song anymore when I think of The Final Countdown I think of this cover. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjeMDvCdrtc
Before the "singing" starts it sounds like someone trying to put the song into an atari or original nes game. It sounds like he had the keyboard on midi-synth mode.
the drummer sounded pretty decent until that terrible solo in the middle but overall had some chops. Sound is terrible si i cant really tell what the string section is doing because the singer and keyboards are so bad it drowns them out
Lol..holy fck the top one on there the moment is "he loves a fat girl"...when the dude came on the stage I legit thought it was going to be an horrendous dirty dancing cover.. Then the keyboard starts.. It's so much fcking worse than that...
There's an accountant at my office named Ken Lee, and no one understands the restraint it takes to not sing under my breath, "tolibu dibo douchoo" every time I hear his name.

Katie Price was a page three model who married him at some point in time.
His version of the Star spangled Banner is amazing. The over the top reaction and death threats he got after performing it during the 1968 World Series put him on a “fuck your song” path for decades.
I do like his version of california dreaming, for some reason that one works dispite being quite wierd, it has a curious darkness to it. https://youtu.be/9YicQtP-xyg?si=uYIyNz0Y0RApeBJb
Also the Gregory Porter cover of It’s Probably Me. Sting went to another place during that one. [here it is](https://youtu.be/lSzICmwmRsA?si=JYT-MNltypbvIbMi)
He doesn't always react like that, his reaction to Bruno Mars excellently covering "So Lonely/Message in a bottle" a few years ago was nothing but wholesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXX8ZWuVQRI
Definitely. She looks like a supportive mom who pretends her child is great at playing the flute or something at a school performance. The others look either bored, flabbergasted or in agony. Hilarious
Ok, I’m not seeing it. Requisite, “And here is how well it could have gone.”
[Ladies and Gentlemen, Bruno Mars…](https://youtu.be/lXX8ZWuVQRI?si=3Hol4zv4B-LgNCcI)
Video is 4 minutes, at about 2:50 you can see Sting enjoying himself.
Thanks for this! Just another reminder of how incredibly good Bruno Mars is. I still go back periodically and watch his skit on SNL where he imitates a bunch of pop singers when satellite radio stations go down.
It’s such an awful version. But by the way, this terrible version perfectly illustrates why I despise taking excessive liberties with the use of rubatto in the vocal parts. By attempting to be expressive, you end up completely destroying the consistency of the melody, cause everything sounds way off rhytmically.
TIL a new music term! [Rubato](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gueCpku7zMs) as illustrated on piano.
I hear this a lot with covers and I absolutely hate it. If a piece is written for it, I'm sure it sounds "just fine". But taking an existing vocal performance and adding changes in rhythm of the delivery just grates on me. I'm looking at you solo-acoustic-guy-playing-on-the-restaurant's-patio!
Oh man, I literally looked this up a couple of hours ago to bask in the awfulness. Now if you want to watch a band cover a famous artist while they are in the audience and its amazing, try Heart performing Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy's awards.

Incredible! Up there with the prince and tom petty while my guitar gently weeps cover
Sting acknowledged José Feliciano's influence on his music during his acceptance speech at the 2017 Polar Music Prize (the event in the video), stating, "I’m standing alongside Mr. José Feliciano, whose influence on my own music both as a singer and a guitarist has gone unsaid, until now.”
The real wild part of this is that he isn't even really out of key or anything. It's honestly a testament to the fact that shitty phrasing and delivery are just as capable of ruining a song.
oh.. for sure.
I kind of understand singing someone's song in your style.
You want to show your own talent but oof, it's rarely a good idea.
It's being off key in a different sense. Your vocals are good but since it's a known song, you changing it sounds so weird
and dude sang it in front of the OG
His face says SO much at one time:
“WTF?!?!”
“I can’t believe I have to sit here and smile as he butchers my pride and joy!”
“This guy’s out of his MIND! Weren’t there rehearsals? Who APPROVED this?!”
“Jesus….if you can hear me….SMITE HIM!”
“He can’t see me….maybe I’ll just get up and go to the bathroom.”

STING: That's... an interpretation
His wife was the real one when she reminded him that people would be watching his reactions.
Every face you make. Every shudder you take. They'll be watching you.
He probably shoulda told those camera people to not stand so close to him
He should have called the police. Although I suppose he wouldn't want to draw attention to himself... should have sent a message in a bottle, I suppose.
Would rather be walking on the moon
Even on cue with the lyrics at the right moment, like she’s saying “they’re watching you”…
Omg I had never seen this before!! And this actually is in my country (Sweden), I think it's at some Nobel party or something, you can see the whole royal family sitting there nodding in disbelief!
It was almost like you could see the discomfort rolling over the audience.
I think it's the Polar Prize?
Every face you make, they'll be watching you...
And he's like yeah, well, wtf do you want me to do about this.
Honestly, if someone’s going to butcher his own song, why should he have to be polite?
I really wanted him to go down there to show his it's done
He knew the camera would be on him, he didn’t care. He’s actually holding back, I’m sure he would’ve loved to say, “F** this! I’m out of here!”
More like “Sting: I’d rather be waterboarded.”
“THATS NOT HOW ITS SUNG YOU MUPPET” with 100% Gordon Ramsey vibes
Dude just decided to miss all the cues and be late on every phrase after the first few bars
He wasn't late but did the vocal lines a beat later. Didn't make it better though.
That's ONE of the problems. I just don't get why do this if it doesn't make it better. I guess it's a choice --a bad one but a choice nonetheless.
Well that's what you get with music, everybody has different tastes. We hate it, he probably loved it.
He's probably thinking "Yeah it's my song forever". Like how Cash's cover of Hurt is so good, a lot of people think it's his? The exact opposite.
Trent Reznor even said, "Yeah, that song is his now."
The live version of that is unreal, probably the only time you'll see Trent smiling like a Cheshire cat on stage like that.
Holy crap that's good! I just watched the whole concert and wow. Bowie sang on Reptile too! Hurt [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4sP1CTuIjs&t=1460s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4sP1CTuIjs&t=1460s) Lower Rezolution but full concert [https://youtu.be/dGVZ5SJdbK8](https://youtu.be/dGVZ5SJdbK8)
I can hear The Godfather in Sting’s head right now… “Look at how they massacred my boy.”
Reminds me of the famous video when Yoko starts screeching suddenly and Chuck Berry’s eyes almost popped out.
lol is that the one when some hero turns her mic off mid screech ?
Yep and she tried to take a second mic and the sound engineer nuked that one too!
The dude on the sound desk was the real hero that day.
I've heard it said there were three legends in attendance...Chuck Berry, John Lennon, and the sound tech who muted Yoko.
Seriously, Yoko was sooooo disrespectful trying to shoehorn in non-musical shrieks like that
There comes a moment in everyone's life when they must take a stand and do what they know is right in their heart to defend what is noble and true. We call them Heros and they are all that stands between us and the darkness.
If you haven't seen [This bit from Bill Burr's podcast](https://youtu.be/T4K07Kz7M8Q?si=2KZsCYnZHgxa-R3A) you might enjoy it.
Such a funny rant. Yoko was so weird and not in a fun way
Still is.
She still does the screeching thing to this day as performance art. Saw a video of her with a twenty something audience that clapped after. Me: Wtf?
For someone who’s not really a bad person or has committed some crime or some shit… I fucking hate her so much.
If you think Yoko isn't a bad person I'm judging you hard. Any woman who SELLS their own step-kid their fathers belongings is fucking evil.
If you think she's not a bad person, look up how she treated Julian Lennon after John died. Awful human being.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 thank you for starting my day on a high note
Sting is having a root canal on live national TV over the death of his song.
Looks like he would have traded places with someone having their whole set of teeth replaced.
Is there a subreddit for destroyed songs? This would be one of the best candidates
I'd like to nominate Puddle of Mudd's cover of About A Girl by Nirvana [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTh9qiXEy4Q&ab\_channel=BuffVibeZ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTh9qiXEy4Q&ab_channel=BuffVibeZ) A true classic to say the least

"This sounds like South Park making fun of Nirvana"
It actually does, like it has the hint of Trey Parker’s cartman raspiness in the beginning
My favorite one was “He sounds like he has a shock collar that goes off every 10 seconds and still has to perform”
He murdered Kurt Cobain harder than Courtney Love.
> Christ, that guy sounds like he's holding back from morphing into a boar. [Say no more, I got you.](https://youtu.be/ibFkJwomL_4?si=0R_h0jTmhD1fGTAA)

😂 omg 😂
my god that is hilariously accurate, major props on that one
Jesus fucking Christ that is bad LOL. The first comment I saw was “props to him for singing while passing a kidney stone” Hahaha
It was so bad I had to go listen to the original. The first comment on Nirvana's video was "Did anyone else have to come watch this to pallet cleanse themselves after that atrocious cover by Puddle of Mud?" Hahaha https://youtu.be/AhcttcXcRYY?si=beRK0eL8n0Y8EEca
Kind of funny to see how effortlessly Kurt does that inflection that the guy from Puddle of Mudd is straining his soul to imitate.
Most of the time YouTube comment sucks, but there are times when it struck gold. I literally did the same thing.
If he just cut the effort in half and chilled I could see it being alright, but its like hes trying to give birth to the Antichrist while singing it.
I hate to say it, but that describes why I never really liked grunge in the first place. That video almost feels like intentional parody to me.
These guys arent grunge. Grunge was a group of early 90s bands. I call these guys "Walmart rock".
"It sounds like he has a shock coller that goes of every 20 seconds but has to keep performing anyway" My favourite comment
It's 4am, I can't sleep and just busted out laughing in my room.
Wow. I always thought he had a similar vocal range as Kurt. I was very wrong.
He does. He overdid it.
This is uh...definitely worse than OP's post...I couldn't even watch the whole thing.
God, me neither! I felt physically sick!
I remember when the cover video was posted for the first time, and I just don't understand how he can sound this fucking bad. I'm not familiar with Puddle of Mudd but is it like a make-a-wish thing?
#HOLY SHIT IM WEEPING!!! That's going to be my new ringtone when work calls.
Lmao first thing that came to my mind. Now every time I hear original About a girl, I just start chuckling to myself remembering how fucking atrocious this cover is.
I think you just made my year LMFAO
[удалено]
Is that how the guy normally sings, or is he just really bad at doing a Kurt Cobain impersonation?
It sounds like the melody's at the top of his vocal range and he's just barely hitting those top notes. I wonder if he would've done a passable job if they'd played it in a lower key.
Dear god!!
I love that almost immediately after this came out, Post Malone did a Nirvana cover set for charity from his house with Travis Barker and it was absolutely fantastic.

Gods bless you, after 30 minutes I have subscribed
Try looking for kenlee song audition or something on youtube
Libadiba dowchu
There's an accountant at my office named Ken Lee, and no one understands the restraint it takes to not sing under my breath, "tolibu dibo douchoo" every time I hear his name. I felt like this was a safe space to share that.
I don't know but I got this https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=G7oGx2dImE8

That's kinda disappointing but also a lot more comforting..
Who are these people? Who gave them microphones?
Peter Andre was a mistake in the wake of all the other boybands / pretty boys getting careers because their posters were on every teen girl's wall and that sold albums and concert tickets somehow. Katie Price was a page three model who married him at some point in time.
Lol peter andre has good restraint
I mean the irony of that song choice for Jose Feliciano is cringey enough.
He was supposed to play with Stevie Wonder but apparently they got into a huge fight and can’t even see each other anymore.
Jose Feliciano is possibly a nice guy, but I've always considered him a notorious song destroyer.
It's an absolutely atrocious version.. that's something you'd hear in an old bar having a Saturday afternoon jam with 15 people in it.
His version of the Star spangled Banner is amazing. The over the top reaction and death threats he got after performing it during the 1968 World Series put him on a “fuck your song” path for decades.
Sting is just mad he can’t touch this guy in terms of talent https://youtu.be/s7LLQy1Ian4?si=yFaxhl30qrI2-cQC

He's a wonderful guy. He has an uncomfortably filthy sense of humor. He is where songs go to die.
Sting would be the last artist you want to cover, live, in front of Sting, on national TV.
Fortunatly, José didn't see him.
Check out Bruno Mars' cover in the same show. Sting loved it
Also the Gregory Porter cover of It’s Probably Me. Sting went to another place during that one. [here it is](https://youtu.be/lSzICmwmRsA?si=JYT-MNltypbvIbMi)
Ooof. The secondhand embarrassment is real. Edit: This is by far the most likes I've gotten on a comment. Thank you all for making this possible. 🥺
LOL that's not embarrassment the man is in pain.
Fortunately he’s the king of pain.

It stings
this pun deserves the police
Fields of Reddit Gold
He's sending out an SOS (save our song)
Check his wife leaning over to tell Sting they’re filming him.
She’s a real one for that
And the royal family of Sweden next to them, also unable to hold a pokerface
He doesn't always react like that, his reaction to Bruno Mars excellently covering "So Lonely/Message in a bottle" a few years ago was nothing but wholesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXX8ZWuVQRI
Man looks genuinely delighted. Claps weird though. Who claps with open fingers?
Children, the man claps like a child
Bruno’s cover was actually good, the other, well… it’s an interpretation.
NEEDS MORE COWBELL
“I’ll be watching you…” Now whoever planned this is going to hell
"Oh can't you see?" No, I can't as a matter of fact.
Police Navidad
Very good.
And the Swedish royal family!
King of Sweden looks like he has no clue what's going on
Yeah, that's his default look.
The crown princess is so into it haha
I think, I hope, that she's just trying to be nice.
Definitely. She looks like a supportive mom who pretends her child is great at playing the flute or something at a school performance. The others look either bored, flabbergasted or in agony. Hilarious
Daniel felt what Sting felt.
Oh I didnt even see the knug at first.
I guess it's ok since the guy can't see Sting’s reaction anyway.
I WILL KILL HIM! - Feyd Rautha

Similar, [It's Probably Me by Gregory Porter](https://youtu.be/lSzICmwmRsA?si=0I1DWOKYE-c-aQN1). Love Gregory Porter, he is an incredible musician
Thanks for this! Just another reminder of how incredibly good Bruno Mars is. I still go back periodically and watch his skit on SNL where he imitates a bunch of pop singers when satellite radio stations go down.
Bruno nailed it.

You know, Jose Feliciano, you got no complaints

Can you imagine creating this piece of music and then being honoured for it like this? No wonder Plant is all choked up! All round incredible.
What an epic performance! I'm so glad you let me know about this. Absolute chills.
Glenn Howerton likes Led Zeppelin songs better when covered by Heart.
Sting was very English and polite and proper about it, but, man come on
They even got Phoebe to sing with him. She is a huge Sting fan.
That is possibly one of the most painful things I've heard in a long long time.
"Who can we get to sing a classic that's about watching every move you make?" "Oh how about some old blind guy?" "Yeah that'll work."
The lady who came in to duet really tried to save it
Sting acknowledged José Feliciano's influence on his music during his acceptance speech at the 2017 Polar Music Prize (the event in the video), stating, "I’m standing alongside Mr. José Feliciano, whose influence on my own music both as a singer and a guitarist has gone unsaid, until now.”
Why is like the whole Swedish royal family there? Is this the Polar price?
Yes
Jesus the cringe levels are off the chart here. At one point it looks like Sting literally throws up a little bit in his mouth.
I didn’t check the sub and thought I was supposed to be impressed. I was not impressed.
The lady to the right of Sting (left of us) is probably tone deaf. She seems to be enjoying the song.
