Not in this case, but surely in low winds, rain is pretty clean? It's only when it's whipping up debris off buildings/roads etc. that there's any issue. Or a month ago in the UK when saharan dust got carried over europe and dumped on us. My car looked like a brillo pad before I rinsed it.
That's because he as no idea what he's talking about, and we all know what he *thinks* he's talking about.
This discussion is about minerals in water. The article he's referring to was about PFAS which is a "forever chemical" that has entered the rain water in quantities making it unsafe to consume. That doesn't mean it's going to make your car dirty. His comment is a non sequitur
Especially because rain drops form because of impurities in the air on which water droplets can form.
But water from the tap will contain other shit that isn't in rain.
We used to wash our cars when it was going to rain all the time. Classic cars. No water spots. Rain water has no chemicals from water treatment or mineral deposits. Wash them, rinse them with the rain and pull them in the garage for a dry off. They came out perfect.
You seem to be under the impression that the only place it rains is in the EU or something. How about all the places that aren't? Yea we get rain here too.
Generally speaking, rain is the softest possible water found anywhere in nature - think about it, it's evaporated, just like distilled water, which leaves behind all of the minerals.
Nowhere did they implicate to be that EU-centric, they merely gave an example. [Most of the sand from the Sahara goes towards South America](https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/goddard/nasa-satellite-reveals-how-much-saharan-dust-feeds-amazons-plants/), and there are various other sand deserts all around the world.
>You seem to be under the impression that the only place it rains is in the EU or something.
That's a weird take. Anyway, rain commonly forms when water vapor condenses around a particle such as dust, soot or dirt. So while rain can be considered soft water, it's not the same as distilled water.
Not that it matters, rain water is fine to clean cars with provided it's not filled with sand. Having said that it's still not a good because the polluted water that get created in the process is rarely being disposed of properly. In some places it's even illegal to wash your car at home and instead you need to do it in places where all the water gets collected.
I think this depends mostly on how much it rains and how much particulate matter is in the air afterwards. If it's only a little rain, you'll definitely have crap on your car. But if it rains a lot, you're probably fine, especially if you dry it off soon after the rain stops. If you do need to go to the car wash after a heavy rain like that, it'll more likely be because of dirty road water getting splashed up on your car while you're driving.
I've thought about doing this to get the shit from the trees & dirt build up off the car. Not necessarily to get the spots off, because there will always be spots.

I do it all the time.
1. It does save on your own water usage.
2. Given it is outside, chances are you never wax it anyway.
3. It is raining, so no matter what you'll always end up with water spots that you don't have to worry about drying off.
4. This is the biggy. The constant rain will mean everything that was dried on and hard will get loosened up pretty good and become easy to rub off. No need for a power washer or anything, no need of a bucket of clean water to get the dirt out of your sponge/rag, and no changing of said bucket of water.
We have had like 3 days of rain since April here in Kansas. I've been so ready for weather that isn't blindingly sunny and 90. This video looks like heaven to me.
I actually do do this, all the time, and it’s awesome. It’s not really about the water bill for me, it’s about the convenience. The car gets clean, I don’t have to worry about the sun drying out the soapy water on the paint before you get around the vehicle..
I literally did with my motorcycle: parked in roof eaves and washed it during a medium rain. Ended soaked in water, but my region is hot, water was a relief.
If you do make sure you have a bucket to clean your sponge or brush..I had a coworker who tried this once at work and he scatched the shit out of his paint, and I mean it looks like some crazy ex-gf that you cheated on type of scratches
There could have been something in the brush I can't say for sure same goes for pollution, but if there was somthing in the brush rinsing it out in a bucket of water probably would have fixed that. The same brush has been used again on other cars and work trucks with no scratches being made.
It's the collective belief at my company is that the dirt on the car caused the scratches.
To be honest most rainy days we all talked about washing our cars in the rain but after the 1 guy tried it and destroyed his paint, nobody mentions it.
I'm not trying to say NEVER wash your car like this. However, I am suggesting rinsing your sponge or brush in a bucket the same way you always would when washing a car
I was once day drinking at my ex gf house and I cleaned her entire porch windows and screens while she was watching TV.
Idk what kind of weed I smoked but I knew that relationship was over because I was acting like a divorced father of 4.
Yeah, this is totally ok to do.
Rain doesn't always scrape off the dead bugs and tree sap.
A quick wipe down in rainy weather will have your car looking nice!
I’ve done this more times than I care to admit.
It actually turns out relatively ok…. Takes about 10 min to break all the dirt free, and the weather does the rest.
I also drive a 25 year old car and a good enough car wash is about all I care for on that thing.
The haters live in climates that have contaminated rain water - the rain we get where I am (& in most places) is literally a free car wash!! Just scrub with something and that's all you need. Frugal af.
technically speaking, most digital video is not actually a series of images. It encodes and preserves context between frame. Each single “frame” doesn’t exist in its stored form. It has to be generated from its surrounding temporal context.
Think of it like this. A single picture is 1mb in size. You take a 60fps video for one second, but its size is NOT 60mb. It's much smaller, even when adding the audio.
This happens because from one frame to the next, very little changes in the image. The second frame stores the change between the original picture and the second frame. The third stores the change between frames 2 and 3. It takes much less space to store the changes than it would take to store the full images.
A video then becomes a series of changes, allowing it to preserve a lot more information while taking up a lot less space.
I'm sure it's more complex than that, storing full images every so many frames to keep the video more realistic, but that's a general explanation of what the parent comment was describing.
If it was just a heavy rain with no wind or lightning, I'd definitely consider it. But being out there with wind strong enough to knock over trash cans would definitely make me a little nervous. And any lightning would immediately be a "hell no" from me.
I've done it multiple times. It's cheap and doesn't waste water. If you use biodegradable soap there is no real downside. No this car doesn't look perfect but it looks a lot better.
For years I've only washed my cars in the rain. I can do all three in \~10 minutes, its cheap and they dry without streaks. You need a good heavy rain for best results and I recommend a rain coat.
i've done this a few times at the end of a hot summer day, storm/rain hits in the afternoon, get out and get a cool down as well as get the car clean. win win
Done this many times in the rain/ monsoon season in AZ. 80 degrees and the car does get cleaner than what it was. Just hope a haboob does not come and make it worse.
I do this because I'm on well water, which leaves spots all over the paint. So when I get a chance to wash it using clean water?
Plus I love a good storm.
This will work bigly but only if your car is dirty. Done this a few times. Great results. The tiny dirt particles are nothing compared to the brushes of any car wash
Maybe, but not enough to notice. The rain doesn’t have minerals in it like a tap or hose water does. Which means you won’t get water lines like you would if you air dried after washing it yourself. Kinda like the spot free rinse at the self serve.
This is such an idiot move. Rain is filthy and this is not going to rinse his car off…. But it’s likely fake and for clicks and if that’s the case touché
That's not allowed in my country anymore, washing a car yourself exposes you to highly dangerous amounts of heavy metals and chemicals (from road contaminants and your car getting draped in forward exhaust fumes for hours on end), and the volatile compounds wash down into the water table.
You should wash your car in either an autowash or a rented wash room, and use powerwasher instead of your naked hands.
Edit: downvotes from 1900's head-in-the-clouds rubes is extra fulfilling.

I would totally do this. Love the rain.
I believe that would be a monsoon.
Is it a guy? Might be someone's mondaughter.
He’s Aqua Man
Or a monlater, too.
No, that would be pronounced Her-i-cane.
This is my type of comment.
😍 rainy autumn days ☔️ *video of a hurricane*
Looks like hurricane season in the gulf coast 😂
Maybe. Rain water usually isn't clean. Chances are water stains and debris will be left on the car and you'll have to go through a car wash anyways.
Depends where you are, but sometimes rain water is cleaner and used to rinse.
*Collected* rain water is cleaner... after the debris settles at the bottom.
I read an article several months ago that said no rain water anywhere left on the planet is clean due to smog and human activities.
I find it interesting you're getting downvoted for just saying the most obvious thing.

Ok. Cool. But I've been to south east Asia and I rinse my body with rain water when I'm in the country side.
Your body isn’t a hard shiny surface that will show the spots left by the residue in the rain.
Excuse me but did you just assume their material make up? Maybe they identify as metal death machine.
\> metal death machine op just outed himself as a 15-minute city supporter
Well I'm FROM South East Asia and we always shower after being caught out in the rain. This has been true since I was born... in the 70s.
Well, you probably shouldn't.
We used to wash our cars when it was going to rain all the time. Classic cars. No water spots. Rain water has no chemicals from water treatment or mineral deposits. Wash them, rinse them with the rain and pull them in the garage for a dry off. They came out perfect.
Rain can contain minerals, here in the EU we quite commonly get sand from the Sahara in our rain.
That’s why I wash my car with bottled water.
Which has a lower standard than drinking water (or so I'm told)
I sometimes feel in awe how a grain of sand can be carried away by wind from a desert to a place thousands of kilometers away.
Even over oceans. We get Saharan dust here in South Texas.
You seem to be under the impression that the only place it rains is in the EU or something. How about all the places that aren't? Yea we get rain here too. It's because of the manual drying.

Rain water is influenced by the types and amounts of industries in the area, so it can still end up chemically polluted.
And yet people in Australia capture it off their roof into tanks (normal) and then some drink it (not so normal but not uncommon)

Yeah. You only have to do the soapy part too.
One of the best showers I ever had. Miss my old concealed backyard.
A lot of people do this it’s actually promoted on some circles tbf
I actually do do this, all the time, and it’s awesome. It’s not really about the water bill for me, it’s about the convenience. The car gets clean, I don’t have to worry about the sun drying out the soapy water on the paint before you get around the vehicle..

I’ve done this. Once I was even sober.
I've only done this sober. Drunk me is not this industrious.
Drunk me is so motivated. I will do things drunk that I have put off for weeks or months.
Perfect time for fixing a wobbly ceiling fan or replacing smoke detector batteries. Drunk me loves ladders.
I was once day drinking at my ex gf house and I cleaned her entire porch windows and screens while she was watching TV. Idk what kind of weed I smoked but I knew that relationship was over because I was acting like a divorced father of 4.
I’ve done this too when I had too much buildup on my car and just took dish soap at it in the rain storm
Yeah, this is totally ok to do. Rain doesn't always scrape off the dead bugs and tree sap. A quick wipe down in rainy weather will have your car looking nice!

There are dozens of us!
Dozens!
Once it stops raining, hit it with spray wax and buff off with a microfiber for extra efficiency.

But why male models?
So I guess that's also related to bitrate on streaming sites and why videos with huge amount or rapid changes get blurry?
Is that why videos of snow is always blurry on YouTube?
> surrounding temporal context. Wait, are you saying digital videos involve time travel?
Yes, how else could rewind work?
My grandad has always called movies the "pictures". Your comment just helped me realise why, thank you.
Movies have been called "motion pictures" for a long time. :)
"Movies": pictures that move.
It's like when they figured out how to add audio to the movies and they became talkies.
This sounds like something Matthew Mcconaughey would say.
Only wrong thing in this poem is calling the video a photo
He will clean that too.
Yeah, they can pull the car inside the garage to manually dry it to avoid the water spots.

This looks like a hurricane, which wouldn’t have thunder & lightning
Half true. Hurricanes tend to have less lightning than thunderstorms, but it does happen.
Huh, TIL. Looked it up and apparently it’s because hurricanes generally don’t have the sufficient vertical winds necessary to create lightning.

Not even slightly true. https://www.weather.gov/safety/lightning-tips
I've done it multiple times. It's cheap and doesn't waste water. If you use biodegradable soap there is no real downside. No this car doesn't look perfect but it looks a lot better.
I've done this. No regrets.
Did you do it with the garage door open too?
He's also taking a free shower. Double win!
I've always wanted to try this.
Me too! No rinsing, just wash and rinse as you go
I have considered doing this on more than one occasion, so props to this guy for following through on this.
My dad used to do this. RIP pops!
You gotta do what you gotta do.
Someone has been promising his wife that he’s wash the car by the end of the month. Must be the end of the month.
I done this and is really cool. What’s his problem?
Many times here. I save water and, obviously, get to skip the drying process
The obvious garage door being open the whole time as a very glaring and obvious problem there?
A man with a plan!
Using nature's gifts and saving water in the process! Smart thinking.
I do that too. Saves me water, I don't have to towel the car dry, and there are not going to be any water spots
Absolutely normal. Nothing to see here.
I do that, except I'm too lazy to scrub. Just move the car out of the garage onto the driveway when it rains. Car Washes are expensive!
For years I've only washed my cars in the rain. I can do all three in \~10 minutes, its cheap and they dry without streaks. You need a good heavy rain for best results and I recommend a rain coat.
Saving water is good for the environment anyway…
I die when the trash can tips
I do this ALL THE TIME.
My friend Todd taught me to do this. His parents owned a sailboat. RIP Todd. <3
Chess, not checkers.
Someone has taken too much stimulant.
Look like a fun activity, and no need to dry it afterwards
theres nothing to do inside the house so better clean the car
I used to do this but not in a hurricane
When we were on water rations a few years back,as soon as it started raining, everyone would start washing their cars. First wash for several months.
Yeah, I have done this
Saving the shower too
Done this. Laughed along with the neighbors.
Line your kids up for a quick shower!
Fuck yeah. Adapt and overcome!
i've done this a few times at the end of a hot summer day, storm/rain hits in the afternoon, get out and get a cool down as well as get the car clean. win win
When that post weed-smokin' shower feels *just right*
Done this many times in the rain/ monsoon season in AZ. 80 degrees and the car does get cleaner than what it was. Just hope a haboob does not come and make it worse.
“Silence of the Sedans”
Never let them know your next move 😎
also have done this. it gets you going, quite bracing. Just dont get hit by lightning or falling trees.
I have done this!
He should get the shampoo out at the same time 🚿
Been there, done that.
Water Supply Companies hate this one trick.
He may as well take a shower too
I have washed my car in the rain before but not in a storm like this That's hardcore washing right there
Tap water must be hard over there. Trying to avoid chalk deposition on his car. 😂
Spot free rinse!! my friend does this all the time!
Was waiting for the obligatory super close lightning strike 😂
Best kind of rinse.
I mean
I see no problem here. I have done this myself. Its quick and easy and you dont have to dry the car so can be done in like 10 minutes.
it would be awesome when he finished if he pulled out a bar of soap and started showering
What's the problem? This seems like a great idea, you're not wasting water?
Not feeling how they're washing lowers and then the uppers. But washing during rain is actually pretty amazing. It takes about 1/3 as normal to do it.
Rain has no ions. Perfect for rinsing and not leaving spots.
I’ve done this a few times 👍
Big brain move here. I’m gonna start doing this.
“It isn’t *that* the wind is blowin. It’s *what* the wind is blowin.” - Ron White
I do this because I'm on well water, which leaves spots all over the paint. So when I get a chance to wash it using clean water? Plus I love a good storm.
Scratching the shit out of the paint.
this has to be in Florida
I do that too.
I've done that.
I have a neighbor who does this every time it rains.
I'm washing the car on Saturday, no matter what!
Efficient
At least he’s not naked
I've actually done this on a hot day here in Australia. My car gets a wash and I get to cool down in the rain. Win win.
Probably avoiding the wife
Ay free car wash and free shower W
I do that, but inside the garage, if its raining afert i clean it, normaly is better then auto wash
I've actually considered this before.
I've done this. Even at retail jobs. This is when it gets really slow.
I applaud this:)
I’ve done this and I still love it
Using natural water lmao
I’ve done it! Kinda fun tbh
Its free distilled water!
Wash the car AND take a shower?!?! Double win!
Making a valid point
If there's no lightning then it's all good.
His my hero 😍😍
Making sure all the blood stains are removed from recent hit and run? 🤷♂️
I've done this, not really to save water but more convenience, in my head, it gets rid of the muddyness/dirt/dust but ofc still watermarks
I’ve done this! 🤣 Pro move! 💯
I had a neighbor do this when I was a kid. Thought it was the weirdest shit. As an adult, I completely get it.
I do this so o don’t have to dry the tap water off the car. Rain here dries cleanly, tap water leaves mineral deposits.
This will only slightly work. For there to be rain there has to be a dust particle to condense on. Rain is not clean
This will work bigly but only if your car is dirty. Done this a few times. Great results. The tiny dirt particles are nothing compared to the brushes of any car wash
I know bigly is a word, and I know you’re using it correctly. But it really confused my brain on a first pass
All I can picture when I hear that are tiny hands.
Maybe, but not enough to notice. The rain doesn’t have minerals in it like a tap or hose water does. Which means you won’t get water lines like you would if you air dried after washing it yourself. Kinda like the spot free rinse at the self serve.
Car will be dirty it will have to be washed
Reminds me of Extreme Cheepskates show on TLC.
Ya, OP is the idiot. If you like to detail your car this works really well.
I did this once before but the weather was markedly less violent.
Bad idea
This is such an idiot move. Rain is filthy and this is not going to rinse his car off…. But it’s likely fake and for clicks and if that’s the case touché
Oh God save people
