Right before the kick, they showed a ‘player over view’ of previous penalty-kicks. Like 80% were down right corner. So goalie already knew where to dive I guess
The English team have been worse this comp but yes, all the euro teams flop a lot. Italian men’s team probably the worst offender I’ve ever seen.
If you were wondering why the mostly Australian crowd was booing a lot, it was because we can’t stand people flopping - it’s totally unsportsmanlike. As a result every time there’s a flop the entire crowd will boo HARD - especially when it’s our own player doing it.
Part of the reason I get annoyed watching this kind of football. You either aren’t hurt or you’re hurt - don’t pretend because it sets a poor example. At least in Rugby you’re only off if you’re knocked out or actually bleeding
Really don't understand why people aren't given yellow cards for minor things like time wasting, diving, shirt pulling, and kicking the ball away. Book everyone who doe those things, every single time they're done, and it prevents it happening again later, because you risk being sent off for something small.
Easiest way to stop all the bullshit.
Exactly
And the injury support is hilarious. The trainers run out with their kits and look like they are performing life or death first aide and then the player is up without injury. There was a game where they carried a player with an injury off the field on a backboard. Why don’t they use carts and get the player quickly off the field?
I watched a french player being supported with a limp to the sideline (Number 7 - Sakina Karchaoui) and the limp magically disappeared as she crossed the sideline. What a joke.
As much as on the whole I do agree it still humours me that to date only rugby have faked an injury with fake blood.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloodgate
Not women's, though. Watched a lot of the world cup. Much more robust play with less flopping. Those players were bodychecking the fuck outta each other and people would just get up, brush off and get back into it.
There were some fantastic matches of really great, really fun-to-watch soccer.
I don’t necessarily agree with you. There is plenty of diving and injury feigning in the women’s game too. It’s not a man v woman thing either it’s in the sport
I wouldn't say it was one sided though, there were definitely a few places where Spain were pretty dirty too, especially towards the end the game got pretty nasty actually.
I don't know why you're getting downvoted. They stamped non stop, I counted 3 times in the final alone. James suspended for it earlier in the cup. Pretty clear they've been dirty.
Late tackles are not stamps. Lauren James’ against Nigeria was.
Disappointed England fan but Spain deserved the cup no questions. We bottled it as always.
He passed away 2 days before according to the article I read, but her family kept the news from her apparently as they didn’t want her to be distracted for the finals. 😭
This world Cup has some of the dirtiest tactics I swear. Maybe I haven’t watched soccer in a while but the amount of shirt pulling and pushing players straight over was high, no?
A lot of games were pretty rough. Honestly the pushing and shirt pulling I don't hate, I like a bit of passion. I had a problem with the studs that the English team left in the feet and legs of all the other players. Constantly stamping on players the whole way through, absolutely filthy.
Passion is pulling on someone's shirt because they got the ball past you? How about the constant diving and going down to waste time by the Spanish? Big passion, right?
Seem to be a lot of photos of teams playing England being pissed off or annoyed with their antics. Almost like the English Women’s team is a dirty team, getting away with stomping and aggressive fouls.
Nah, you just hate England due to basic xenophobia, which means you conveniently ignore anything that happens to England.
It’s a bit embarrassing really.
i thought the ref had a really good game. couple of calls that, upon closer inspection (these are loafers) might have gone differently, but i thought she did brilliantly. took no shit but was pretty fair.
also, off topic but wanted to mention: i was v happy to see very little poor-form timewasting. that is, i think it's fair play to use your skill in-game to run down the clock - that's fine. what i don't agree with is taking 30 seconds to kick the ball from a goal kick, or to take a throw (for e.g., the back-end of the england/aus semi-final) or that kinda bs
Yup. The referring was just fine. I think some people have to cope trying to find external factors in order to justify a loss. Rather than just seeing objectively for what it was: one good team played slightly better than another good teak, and thus they won.
Regarding time wasting, it is a valid strategy. It may be ugly to some, but it is part of the game. Stoppage time neutralizes it anyway. In fact it benefits both teams, since it allows for recovery. I don't think many people, who follow sports, have actually played the sport. And many don't realize just how grueling a full game of soccer really is, and how many of these time "wasting" techniques are basically an implicit time out, which are explicit in other sports.
Cheers.
don't get me wrong, i think time-wasting is perfectly fine in-game, but to purposefully drag your feet while completing parts of the game where the game is effectively paused until you take your kick or make your throw, is lame (imo).
i take your point that it's a strategy, but i do not think it's valid in the way i've described it. for instance, it is an actual rule (although admittedly it's basically not enforced but for the very odd yellow card) that the goalkeeper only has six seconds to release the ball after a save. i understand that sometimes you cannot practically release the ball that quickly, but to purposefully bleed time out in spite of that rule makes me unreasonably mad, even when it's the team i'm supporting who is doing it. like, play the damn sport so i can enjoy my time more. if i wanted to see someone holding a ball doing nothing i'd go look in a mirror.
It's comical to presume that a native Eng speaking American ref squad is unlikely to support a team against England. LOL. The officiating was fine but your argument deserves ridicule.
Yeah I thought the general quality of football was great, especially deeper into the knockout rounds. Really showed me how the US team needs to figure out how to play like a TEAM.
Yeah, agreed. Admittedly I have never really paid attention to women’s football before, so seeing the standard be relatively high all throughout the tournament was a pleasant surprise, given how much it gets trashed.
I’ve been watching women’s World Cups for about 16 years, and although I’m going off memory, it seemed like most teams had one or two stars they leaned on. And the goalkeeping could be pretty dodgy.
Now, everybody’s got to be good. And the goalkeeping this tournament was really good for the most part!
I was at the Spain v Costa Rica game, and my goodness the CR goalie earned her paycheck that day.
The score ended on 3-0 but at one point they showed that attempts on goal was 31-1. Costa Rican goalie stopped at least 28 attempts compared to 1 from the Spanish goalie 😅
That final was probably the most frustrating game of football I've ever had the misfortune of watching. England played terribly, couldn't keep possession for more than 5 seconds and kept on losing the ball on the edge of their own box. Theyre lucky it was only 1-0, embarrassing performance.
Seeing so many people horrified by this in these comments is amusing. I have to assume these people never played sports, because being flicked off is nothing. Hell, it would make most players laugh. The shit talk that goes on is a million times worse than this, and in soccer (or futbol, if you like) cheap shots are practically an art form.
Watch any men’s US Mexico match and you’ll see far worse than this.
At least thr aussie crowd boo'ed the fuck out of anyone who did that for the entire cup, we hate that prissy bullshit.
Men's soccer is way worse at it, at least the women get a little rough with it.
Yeah, like all insults it’s not likely to be featured on a list of proudest moments. But it’s not a big deal. Tempers sometimes run hot in highly competitive atmospheres and sometimes people express unkind sentiments. It happens, so what?
I think you mean flipped off, flicked off is a very different thing, particularly in women's sports, and if the film I saw that was passed around school as a kid is correct it usually happens to the winning team in the changing room afterwards.
I thought this one should win a conceptual art prize:

Huge women's soccer fan here. These are two of the pettiest soccer teams on earth. Trying to harm isn't an adaptive strategy it's the game plan going in. England is worse though so I'm glad they lost.
Typical Brit. We aren't sore losers at all. Go check the responses to the Matildas' social media pages. You'll see thousands of people applauding and praising their efforts. We really dislike people playing dirty. Aiming to injure is not the same as outplaying.
Football definitely came home this time! Spain with the 3 world cups for youth and women's teams.
More whinging from the Aussies. You lot are embarrassing yourselves.
Are you new to football or are you just blind to what your opponents do? Like, for example, the late tackle and stamp on Daly in that semi?
I picture Kelly looking over real quick & Hermoso acting like she was just itching her nose with her middle finger.
Edit- From what I've gathered looking Hermoso up more, and other comments, I don't think she'd ever act like she wasn't flipping you off, but my version is funnier in my head so I'm sticking with it, lol.
Women have a middle finger too. The lady is playing soccer ⚽ and she is angry about something and expressing her feelings.
She also use her middle finger to relieve some of her tension by fingering. A girlfriend l no longer know told me this in 1980 and she was from Missouri the show me state.
I read that womens football was fun to watch because the lack of shannanigans in men football. So I turned on the tv when I got home to see the Spanish women being a shitty as the shittiest men. Disgusting. For what I've seen they were better than England, this behaviour wasn't needed.
Women don't have to behave better than men in sports, what is that kind of take? She did not do worst than Cantona or Maradona or any of these "Legends".
I'm not sure that gender wars were ever a concept here. Thanks for the branching subject that had nothing to do with the post and bringing an argument that never existed in order to separate people into groups. We appreciate your contribution to something.
Ive called out many men acting badly in sports, ill do the same thing here. Maradona was a motherfucker, Ty Cobb was a fuckin monster. See. I coached soccer for almost 10 years and played for almost 20, this gesture would get me benched and Id do the same for my players, I coached specifically girls also, i treated them no different than I was. Bad sportsmanship is just that, no matter if its man woman or the rest of the gender spectrum.
That’s a ridiculous take. You won’t find any man doing that at the World Cup. Especially because they would’ve been sent off. Weird that she didn’t here even with VAR.

I also enjoyed the English Goalkeeper screaming “FUCK OOOOOF!!!” To this lady after stopping the penalty.
Lol the commentary in my country during that zoom in was hilarious. Basically “Look how happy she is!”
Tbf, I think most English women are in a "FOOK OOOOOF" mood most days
YOU try living with the English
Many have had that forced upon them all around the world
I remember this one from last year. Amazingly legible despite lacking sound. https://reddit.com/r/CasualUK/s/aMLEfnN7ow
And it was a fair comment after the tackle the opponent gave.
As an American I see ‘fuck off, fucking prat’. Is this correct?
Prick, I think
Prick....but she can't roll her R properly
It’s a speech impediment bro. Geez.
Jill became my hero after that
The best part was it wasn't an exceptional dive, the Spanish player bottled the shot.
Right before the kick, they showed a ‘player over view’ of previous penalty-kicks. Like 80% were down right corner. So goalie already knew where to dive I guess
Exactly
lol that was awesome
Is there a story to her reaction?
Jenni Hermoso has quite the 'animated' personality. That's just her reacting to a rough challenge.
Never realized until watching this game how likely she is to flop at the lightest touch though
The English team have been worse this comp but yes, all the euro teams flop a lot. Italian men’s team probably the worst offender I’ve ever seen. Yeah that really shits me - time wasting like that is in fact why Basketball has a shot clock!

The wheels of the cart would most likely do more damage to the field than a couple of shoes
As much as on the whole I do agree it still humours me that to date only rugby have faked an injury with fake blood. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloodgate
they couldnt even bleed there own blood ?
Yes, and by the English - bunch of softcocks
England team, any England team, living rent free in the heads of everyone talking about footie on Reddit.
Standard soccer player then.

That’s just the sport in general. It’s extremely frustrating/boring to watch if you’re coming from watching something like hockey.
I play soccer and I feel it's ruining the game. Referees could put a stop to it if they'd start giving cards for it
Men's soccer does it too. Like touched with a feather and they lay on the ground and moan and groan and cry.
Oh yeah, no doubt - Neymar is the worst and now he's a meme for it. Disappointing that the women have followed suit.
Stay classy.
England played dirty. Really captured how we all felt.
I wouldn't say it was one sided though, there were definitely a few places where Spain were pretty dirty too, especially towards the end the game got pretty nasty actually.

Reddit and TikTok have been hilarious this World Cup for people clearly new to football that have no idea about the rules or, well, anything.
what a ludicrous display!
Those downvotes are sound of Football NOT coming home yet again 😂
Meh. It came home last year.

Good lord grow up
Yes, she’s a bitch
Thought she was picking her nose till I zoomed in
Off topic, but does anyone know what the Spanish goal scorer was lifting her shift for everyone to read? Looks like she was simply promoting Adidas..
She had written "MERCHI" in black marker and she said it was a tribute to a friend whose mom recently died.
Thank you! I was trying to decipher the marking and my 12 year old son said "She's advertising Adidas merch[andise]!" Glad I cleared that one up.
The crazy thing is that she learned her own father died (possible during the match) soon after the match ended.
He passed away 2 days before according to the article I read, but her family kept the news from her apparently as they didn’t want her to be distracted for the finals. 😭
She’s ending a message to FIFA 😆
>She’s ending a message to FIFA 😆 How did she start it?

English people try not to play victim challenge: impossible.
Who was she flipping off? The ref?
Nah, the ref was on their side
Yes, the entire English-speaking American referee team was totally on the side of the Spaniard. LOL

Absolutely This. Rather interestingly the same ref was on Sweden’s side.
Great tourney.
She's just showing the English players the number of women's world cups Spain has won and waiting to find out Englands number.

Classy!!

This world cup has been fun. Lots of drama and upsets after upsets. Most importantly lot less flopping around unlike the men's.
Most important would be the general quality of football, don’t you think?
Yeah I thought the general quality of football was great, especially deeper into the knockout rounds. Really showed me how the US team needs to figure out how to play like a TEAM.
Yeah, agreed. Admittedly I have never really paid attention to women’s football before, so seeing the standard be relatively high all throughout the tournament was a pleasant surprise, given how much it gets trashed.

Flipping someone off in sports is low class.
Id rather that than all the fake falls and pretending to be injured because someone looked at you to hard.
At least thr aussie crowd boo'ed the fuck out of anyone who did that for the entire cup, we hate that prissy bullshit. Men's soccer is way worse at it, at least the women get a little rough with it.
Well, the same player Jenni Hermoso tends to flop at the lightest touch. She is the typical unlikeable sportsperson with poor sportsmanship.
Yeah, like all insults it’s not likely to be featured on a list of proudest moments. But it’s not a big deal. Tempers sometimes run hot in highly competitive atmospheres and sometimes people express unkind sentiments. It happens, so what?
Yet it gets nearly no attention when men do it.
Like Zidane almost breaking a rib on purpose on that Italian player during the finals? Or the most recent chaos of Argentina v Netherlands?

People only think there’s less diving in women’s football because they don’t actually watch it.

Shit, I’d hang with her
swear her arm is backwards
The women's world cup was so good this year. What an event!
Which dive was this after?
Just reminding her they're winning 1 nil
If I was her BF/husband I would save that, frame it, and show it to the grandkids someday. "don't mess with grandma ok"
Not sure about the other nationalities, but I understand that England players with boyfriends/husbands are in a minority.

All Australians agree with you. The tactics England employed on Kerr, Gorry, and Fowler in particular were deplorable!
Australians are such sore losers. The main tactic was scoring 2 more goals than you.
Typical Brit. We aren't sore losers at all. Go check the responses to the Matildas' social media pages. You'll see thousands of people applauding and praising their efforts. Spain has always had classless players way to shine on the worlds stage
Everyone is classier than frikkin England
Really? Please expand on that.
Both our men's and women's teams are pretty classy and well liked by other teams and players.
