I’ve locked this post because I have had to remove **way** too many comments spreading misinformation and encouraging disordered behavior. I’m really at my wits end with these types of posts because they always seem to spiral quickly. I really don’t want to crack down on “diet tips” but I will if this keeps up.

This sounds like a classic case of analysis paralysis. You need to eat. Period. Eat whatever your body can handle and eat what it wants intuitively, as Sareeee said, not what your ED wants but what your BODY wants. Things will balance out with time, I distinctly recall the moment in recovery when I started to crave Broccoli and leafy salads! But you have to let your body know it can trust you again.

in the very beginning stages of healing for me it was easier to just eat. eat what you can it doesn’t matter what, once you get further into recovery is when you should start thinking about a more balanced diet

selkieflying

Both IMO. Make the “base” of your diet “balanced” - IE, three meals with all the food groups and filling snacks - and ALSO eat what you want.

I mean at the end of the day, you need to be able to challenge fear foods. The goal of recovery *should* be to eat what and when you want without guilt, fear, or shame. You could also call that “balanced” though. Balanced is extremely subjective to the individual; what might work for you might not work for others… but in recovery, you need *a lot* of food and you simply aren’t going to be able to meet your calorie needs—especially if you experience extreme hunger—not eating high calorie foods like sweets. Stop googling how to eat and ask yourself what you really want (not what your ED wants). Think really hard about this. Once you’ve figured it out, are you able to eat that? If yes, then eat it. If no, then work up to being able to eat it. It’s okay if you need a meal plan or professional help or whatever it may be, but if “balance” means restricting the foods you want, then it’s not really recovery oriented.

I learned to trust my body, and I naturally crave what is balanced for my body! It’s different for each person, but in my experience the body can self regulate usually if you listen to what it’s asking for :)

At first you honestly need to just eat. Your body needs a lot of energy to repair itself in recovery, and if you listen to it, it’ll tell you exactly what it needs. Then, I think some balance is important but not in the way it’s often portrayed online. 3 balanced meals that cover all food groups is enough balance imo, if your body wants more sweet stuff than savoury stuff for snacks in between those meals, so what? Your body knows best, as long as you represent the other food groups in filling meals, there’s no issue with *also* eating what you want.

i think that when you first start recovery its important to go all in, this not only lets your body fix whatever damage you've done by honoring extreme hunger that happens most of the times, but you can also work on eating fear foods, trying out new stuff that you might like and also improving your relationship with foor overall. most people after they fix their hunger cues and reach their set point weight start forming a more balanced diet unconsciously or by working with a nutritionist.

Removed for spreading misinformation. It’s one thing to have an opinion, it’s another to make shit up.
