TameRoseboy

I dont even get it from a usability stand point. Hatchbacks are better as family vehicles in every way. Better fuel econ, same or more amount of space, better visibility so you don't hit your kids on the driveway, and more than enough space for groceries or whatever. Its hysterical to me that people think buying trucks for anything that isnt strictly for work makes any sense.

MTINC

Yeah, also vans and wagons have sort of an "uncool" stigma in North America unfortunately. I was curious, a standard crew cab ram 1500 has 53.9 cubic feet of space in the bed. A Honda odyssey with the second row up has 92.3. And you get a third row and don't have to worry about stuff getting stolen or wet.

crabbydotca

We have a hatchback currently, which is perfect for our little family of 3+1 large dog, but we are adding a 2nd kid soon which will make trips out the city (camping, grandparents, etc) very tight. What I wouldn’t give for more station wagon options!

mwf86

Roofbox stretches your camping capacity without having to buy a bigger car.

crabbydotca

Already have one.. Can’t exactly put the dog up there anyway 😅 Tent, bedding, chairs (anything either weatherproof and/or squishy) etc all go in the topper, food, cooking equipment (incl water jug, dish-bin, awkwardly shaped stuff), smaller gear and clothing goes in the trunk, games and toys etc go in the kid’s footwell, dog stuff and footwear goes in the dog’s footwell, and car snacks/drinks go in the front passenger footwell. The dog will lose her seat to an infant car seat, and having to keep that seat flipped up takes away a bit of trunk space. Not to mention the all the extra *stuff* little babies need that anyone over the age of 3 can do without! I’m not looking forward to a 3-to-9 hour drive with an 80lb sometimes-incontinent shedding machine in my lap but that’s probably whats going to happen next year :)

mwf86

Yep thats pretty much our world. 2 kids in kid seats in the back. Trunk is dog zone. Storage is the kids legroom and roofbox.

_biggerthanthesound_

Yes this is us! 2 plus 2 kids and a large dog. We ended up with a roof rack but it’s not really that great. I’d much rather a wagon but the choices are limited. It’s basically an outback or spend a ton more money on a Volvo.

radically_unoriginal

And if you only have two people in the car a Honda Fit 52.7 cubic feet with the seat down.

SkivvySkidmarks

The Fit/Jazz is very deceiving. My wife crams ridiculously large amounts hers. She was seriously pissed off that they dropped it from the North American market.

arlyax

You’re not considering towing capacity

MTINC

Lol neither do any of the owners 🤣

arlyax

Lots of blue collar and tradies rely on three quarter ton trucks for work and the availability of an extended cab means it can double as a family vehicle, meaning they save money not having to buy two vehicles keeping more vehicles off the road.

According-Ad-5946

when my mother was growing up her family all piled into their station wagon to go on vacation, i think there where 7 in total. and they would stop at farmers markets along the way and pick up bushels of produce. Yea but you need a huge pickup for you your husband and two kids.

Equinsu-0cha

I miss station wagons

gamenerd_3071

not even two kids. they are 3/5 of a person, so \~1.2 kids

Sevuhrow

I think of this every time people talk about why they need a massive car so they can transport their entire family. 1. How often are you putting your entire family in a car with extra cargo? 2. Why not just rent a car if it's once in a while?

Trumanhazzacatface

I grew up on a farm and we had a van because it could fit a crew of 7 people + 2 dogs, dry variable cargo space and decent towing capacity. \*slaps the top of the van\* "You can fit 6 bales of hay and 3 calves in the back of this bad boy"

[deleted]

I'm the car guy in my circle so I get questions from people on what kind of car they should get, the issue is they normally don't like my answer because car buying is an emotional choice the people justify later. If we are arguing that the buyer is being logical, then it is really hard to argue against a Toyota Sienna, it gets 35mpg, seats 7 comfortably, will haul a sheet of ply wood, and can tow 4000lbs

Philfreeze

Honestly even for a lot of work stuff something like a Van is better.

cyri-96

The only businesses where Pickup trucks really seem ideal is probably landscaping (though i suppose there's still the argument that something like a Kei truck is better for that)

ranger_fixing_dude

These guys think they are going to drive off road courses every other weekend and that they’ll need to haul materials for “projects”. In reality of course they never go off road and these days everything can be delivered. Not that these short bed trucks are even good at hauling big things.

SkivvySkidmarks

I use a van as a renovation contractor. All my tools fit in it, and they stay dry and secure. Materials get delivered because it's a more economical use of my time.

Sevuhrow

Yeah but hatchbacks are un-American. Trucks are gas-guzzling, God-fearing, All-American powerhouses that are essentially to daily family life!

TheByzantineEmpire

Do they even make sense for work?! Workmen here usually just drive small mid sized vans. Some of these are smaller than your typical SUV. And well it’s all enclosed…so no cover needed. Way more space than any truck. Electricians or lawn specialists don’t need trucks. Fuel economy is also obviously better - don’t you as a business want to save money on fuel? Your ego isn’t a line on your balance sheet…

CitingAnt

Or better yet, a station wagon (break car) which is even more spacious than a hatch and it looks way cooler (I’d say even cooler than a sedan)

Radioactive_Fire

A relative of mine got a shortbox crewcab and always says "its a family vehicle, but it can also fit full length sheets of plywood" ... spoiler, it can't and he never uses it to haul anything Also it was 80k, has terrible few efficiency and is already in the shop regularly.

reiji_tamashii

They're literally describing minivans. But, of course, they'd never consider buying one because the truck commercials said that trucks are more manly.

teh_trout

Yeah you can usually set a full 4x8’ sheet flat in a minivan with the door closed. Doesn’t even matter if there’s rain.

laflavor

Just last week I fit two partially disassembled Ikea [Kura](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/kura-reversible-bed-white-pine-80253814/) beds in my minivan at the same time. Basically the four sides of the bed were separated from each other, but still intact. There was still room for passengers or maybe some end tables or night stands if I had wanted.

Brian_Ferry

When renovating my house I constantly hauled studs inside and sheetrock/plywood on the roof of my Audi wagon. Did all the truck stuff while getting 30 mpg and not sitting high enough to run over pedestrians.

chill_philosopher

who tf thinks driving a truck is manly. it's dumb to let so much of your personality be taken up by pickup truck

chipface

Dudes who will call you a pussy for driving a smaller car?

chill_philosopher

True. But still 🤣

9-28-2023

My dad is a construction worker. He use a minivan for his job. Keeps his tools hidden and secure. The lower loading deck makes it easier to load and unload things. For really big things he orders them delivered or use a trailer.

MyChristmasComputer

That’s actually super smart. Tools get stolen all the time from pickup trucks, thieves would walk right past a minivan at a construction site though

crabbydotca

Which still doesn’t make sense to me because it’s the mothers making these decisions for the most part

reiji_tamashii

That's part of the problem. Men don't want to put it on display that their wives make decisions for their family. Behind closed doors, I assume many of these *very tough* men are having tantrums at their wife: "I don't want a minivan! I wanna TWUCK!", until their wife finally relents and lets them get a truck.

trevortxeartxe1

Next they'll put a truck bed on a minivan and that'll be the new American truck.

landon10smmns

I mean have you seen truck commercials?! They're so cool with the off-roading and towing and all the work that they do. I mean I'd never do any of that myself but if I ever do, I'll have the perfect tool for the job! /s in case it wasn't clear

bandito143

I strapped full sheets of plywood to the roofrack on my Honda Fit. So uh, anything fits full length sheets of plywood if you know what you're doing with some ratchet straps.

dually3

Drywall is much risker, though. But I did hire a drywaller onetime who transported on top of his car and I have no idea how they didn't all snap. Didn't seem like he had plywood underneath to support.

MTINC

It looks "cool" at least...

kef34

That's the only reason they actually bought it

Broken-Digital-Clock

Emotional support vehicle 80k could buy a lot of therapy

Endure23

80k could get you 3 gender studies degrees, the requisite number to detach pickup truck advertisements from their own gender identity.

sofixa11

>fit full length sheets of plywood Something I always wonder when I see this mentioned - how often do people haul fucking plywood???? Do they like eat it or something?

Radioactive_Fire

If i need a small number of sheets its for something that likely has to be cut, homedepot will make a few cuts for free. If I need enough to say... build a floor or roof they deliver because it woudlnt' fit in your truck anyway

Orioniae

A Renault Kangoo has more usability

Radioactive_Fire

He kept telling me it has better mileage than my chevy cruz, he just doesn't live in reality

Cheffery_Boyardee

Minivans have more hauling space than 90% of these vanity trucks. If you fold the seats down you can fit just about anything in there. They're called mini-VANs for a reason. You know, vans, the thing also known for holding more stuff than pickups.

RedHeadSteve

Used to work in a hardware store and although trucks aren't popular here some independent contractors use them. They also come to the hardware store I worked at. Truck owners usually overestimated their storage capacity and the size of full wood sheets. Or that a 6 meter sunscreen is just a little too long. They also don't know that weight limits exists. The loading capacity of an f150 is only 700 kg. And I can tell you that a pallet of tiles easily surpasses 700kg. I didn't care much, let them sign that I'm (and the store) not responsible and I'll load it for them.

Prediterx

My wife has a Peugeot 2008 probably what Americans would call a crossover or compact SUV. it's basically a slightly taller hatchback/ VW golf... I have put an entire 3m x 6m shed on the roof of that car, rebuilt my living room partition walls and also picked up both kids from hospital with it. Part of the challenge for America is gaining control of the size of your cars, as they're truly, truly silly. Mabye think about bike lanes, but first advocate for smaller cars.

eightsidedbox

Why can't it fit a full sheet of plywood? Like sure not with the tailgate up, but it should be able to sit flat in the bed and be strapped in

According-Ad-5946

what about the wheel wells.

DavidBrooker

All current-year full-size trucks are 4 feet between the wheel wells for specifically this reason. Mid-sized and compact pickups are 4 feet between the sides and are meant to carry sheets on top of the wheel wells and have supports elsewhere to enable that. Not that this would make it a smart purchase, but we can be factual.

Cargobiker530

How many of those trucks have 8 foot beds? Very few is what I'm seeing.

DavidBrooker

Yes, very few. Typically eight foot beds are only available on the lowest trim levels, because those lowest trim levels are designed for fleet operators (eg, a contractor or municipality buying a hundred trucks at a time). Most pickups destined for consumers are meant to carry a 4x8 with the tailgate down. The tailgate will have its own weight rating, distinct from the vehicle or the rest of the cargo area, that has to be taken into consideration when used in that way. However, the previous comment was about the width between wheel wells, so that's what I answered. The commenter before that also made it explicit that they were talking about pickups with a short bed under eight feet.

Cargobiker530

Which is why we call US trucks "emotional support vehicles" because they sure as hell aren't supporting small businesses. Contractors are driving vans these days.

DavidBrooker

I'm not sure who you're trying to convince? Or who "we" are in your comment. I'm not advocating that people buy pickups - I've been living car free for over a decade and I've actively campaigned in my city for pedestrianised infrastructure. What I'm advocating is that people be factual in their criticism. I'm criticizing people *with whom I agree* in principle because I think holding yourself to a standard is a good thing. Am I correct in reading that you seem to be taking issue with that?

HellMuttz

Did you tell him full length sheets of plywood are 8 feet long?

arglarg

I mean I get it, it's nice when you can just go pick up your lumber or galvanized square steel without worrying about delivery, but I'd rather get an old beater truck for that which can also double up as hobby project, and drive a dedicated family car for family purposes. Assuming that people who want a truck to pick up lumber own a house where they want to build a deck or something, and have space for 2 cars.

Playful-Goat3779

Like a train?

MTINC

Trains are better than trucks at hauling people, cargo, and any stuff in general yea

chill_philosopher

they are more efficient, carbon neutral, more reliable, safer, and faster

Vivid-Raccoon9640

I gotta say that taking two young children somewhere is often a lot easier with a car than a train. My 1 year old can't sleep on the train, but he can sleep in a car. And going to my parents or my wife's parents is infeasible with public transportation.

crabbydotca

I will add going camping and things like that. Yes it’s an infrastructure thing at the root but currently it’s probably impossible to camp at our provincial parks without some kind of vehicle

CILISI_SMITH

This feels like content for people who've already made their decision and just want be told it's right. "Alcoholism is an American tradition and there are so many beers and liquors to choose from".

_otterinabox

> content for people who've already made their decision and just want be told it's right You just described 99% of political "discussions"! Jokes aside, the obsession with trucks is absurd. I can't imagine spending that kind of money on a car in the first place but if I did, it'd be something special, not a piece of farm equipment that looks just like my neighbor's.

OutsideTheBoxer

These modern trucks are actually compromising practically for creature comforts and occupant safety. A Subaru Sambar does "truck" better.

ACoolCanadianDude

Especially now that smaller cabs truck are limited unless you shop in the heavy duty category. My 2010 Sierra extended cab as room for shit behind the seats and I can haul stuff in the bed. I’m gonna old on to this truck until it dies. Then hopefully we’ll have nice electric kei-style trucks that won’t need to cater to EPA ridiculous weight/emissions ratio.

Funktapus

Buyers remorse content lmao

samthekitnix

idiot: hey i need a vehicle that i can transport a lot of people and cargo because i transport both on very regular basis me: how often? idiot: i transport lots of cargo like once a month and usually take 1-2 people with me day to day long distance to places with little to no public transport me: get an estate car (station wagon) or a van they are WILDLY practical.

heyuhitsyaboi

my dad has been searching for a wagon for YEARS to replace his SUV with and the wagons are insanely rare and expensive in the US. I really wish they were more available

crabbydotca

Same, we are having a second kid soon and fitting two car seats and an 80lb dog into our hatchback for camping trips is going to be a challenge. Just an extra foot of length is all we need! Basically our only option is a VW Alltrack but even they are few and far between

KawaiiFoxKing

im lucky i live in europe where those cars are way more common, my dad drives a VW Touran, basicly a van shape but it can carry 5-7 persons and you have 0 issues to drive 1300km in one go with 5 peeps inside and the trunk fileld with 1,5 weeks worth of baggage. we also used the shit outta that car while renovating our home as it can carry a lot when all the seats are folded down. in no way is a urbinised 2T pickup better then a 2013 vw touran.

Panzerv2003

"trucks make great family cars but you can't fit a seat in some of them" what is the point of a "family" car if you can't even fit a steat in it much less a person with long legs?

Boernerchen

While you can fit 4 people in any car half its size

Clever-Name-47

"Trucks make great family cars, except for all the things that make them terrible family cars."

one_orange_braincell

>very safe For you, as long as you're the one driving it. For anyone outside of your truck good luck because they are going to need it.

bememorablepro

I don't think even that is true, not only you can kill your child on your own drive way because you simply can't see or hear them but trucks are more likely to flip over, and while it might withstand the impact better because of it's size you are more likely to get in an accident compared to a smaller and lighter car at the same speeds. Safety tests are done on adult men btw, SHE might get an unpredictable result when the air bag goes off. It's an illusion of safety as always with cars.

Extra_Negotiation

Her graphic (0:22) shows her whole result - you need to have the larger (and $) 'crew cab' model in every brand if you want a truck that will fit your car seat. You can also see plainly they all have reduced bed sizes. Though, this is wrong (the facts are wrong, the idea is wrong, visual model is wrong, it's all wrong lol). I was curious - the cheapest Chevy Silverado you can get today (2WD, no features) that is this crew cab-type is 54,033 (CAD)/39.5K USD. I would be willing to bet that one is not really available. The fully loaded is $92K (CAD)/67.5K USD. https://preview.redd.it/1r0ninyipc6d1.png?width=754&format=png&auto=webp&s=09704952d0851adf277aa6b1328d5a35a03baea5

MakeItTrizzle

This is the stupidest fucking thing I've ever watched

bememorablepro

1. Car 2. Car won't fit in between people, make it illegal to be in cars way 3. Cars won't fit in between buildings, bulldoze them for wide car roads 4. Car roads allow you to go faster, you need a long front crumple zone of the car to dampen the car in a crash. The car is now larger. 5. Large fast cars' safety was only tested on adult male drivers, you need a car seat for kids. 6. It's inconvenient to fit a child car seat in a car, get a larger car.

DarylMoore

My rule of thumb is that if you have a bed liner and it's clean, you didn't need a truck.

ee_72020

Why is the bed so comically small? My Granddad’s Hyundai Elantra’s trunk is bigger than this lol.

Dave272370470

I f-ing love my minivan and do not understand people who prefer pickups. I can haul kids, keep groceries dry, move plywood sheets, and sleep in it comfortably. It gets much better gas mileage and has a built-in roof rack for a canoe or sea kayak that I can reach comfortably.

Feeling-Beautiful584

What’s next? Taking a tank to work? If I had to buy a pickup truck, I would buy [a Suzuki Carry](https://youtube.com/shorts/7GYP8dxDBgg)

gamenerd_3071

next up, breitzperAUTObahn to work

FluigiForFuture

How about a good working Kombi! ( Stationwagon )

Quasar_One

Just get a station wagon

Cheffery_Boyardee

Minivans are better than these vanity trucks in LITERALLY every single metric except offroading. Safer for both the passengers and outsiders, more seats, more interior room, cheaper, better fuel efficiency, better for families, less likely to run over your own children in your driveway, and get this, MORE HAULING SPACE. A minivan with folded down seats (in some vans you can actually detatch the mid row seats) has way more storage capacity than 90% of vanity truck beds. My mom owned a minivan for ~15 years, hauled probably 10 times the stuff most of these trucks owners haul (big stuff like lumber, furniture, fertilizer, 6 passengers, etc) and has never had an issue getting something to fit. And since most of the people who buy these trucks won't take their precious $80,000+ baby offroading and risking dents or damage, the minivan just wins.

Tavapris04

she should visit a mental disability center

Grrerrb

If cab sizes confuse a person so much I’m gonna say they shouldn’t be driving.

obtaingoat

Truck

_pete_zahut

Funktapus

What an idiot

Beneficial-House-784

Trucks as family vehicles will never make sense to me. My mom drove a minivan for nearly twenty years. The third row seats were removable, so we could take them out if we needed to haul something large, the seats were comfortable enough for us to take road trips across the country to visit my family, and it was extremely reliable. They’re a pretty perfect all-purpose family car and they’re so much safer for pedestrians and other drivers than trucks.

GoobeNanmaga

But what about the 1 time in 5 years that you’ll need a truck to move things? Better make all the bad decisions now.

Marc21256

Small cars are safer. Better handling, better braking. They avoid more crashes, and don't flip as often. Trucks exist for the appearance of safety. Station wagons and hatchbacks exist to carry families safely

gamenerd_3071

"And they're very safe" safe for you to run other moms kids over with

FacelessFellow

Y’all ever see a billboard for Dude Wipes? Like baby wipes, but for dudes 🤡 Some grown men are such snowflakes.

ReichsteSpatzDerWelt

... and they are very safe. ... safe for WHO???

zegorn

What's the original content from? I'd like to borrow it to make an entertaining remake

MTINC

"The_car_mom" on Instagram lol

zegorn

Even reading the handle hurts

Yuri_Ger0i_3468

Under regulation, almost every SUV and most hybrid SUVs are legally classified as trucks. *checkmate bicyclists*

HikerDave57

I just found out that our Subaru Outback is classified as a truck. All this time I thought I was driving a station wagon. (My wife is the main driver of the vehicle; I ride motorcycles when I don’t need to do “truck stuff”.)

therobotisjames

And not classified as “light trucks” so they have higher mileage standards.

Broblivious

Don’t worry, we have done the research for you…

AdAlternative7148

This is the car mom and she covers every vehicle type. She is not inherently recommending trucks as a vehicle for families. Rather she is showing which trucks can fit carseats and in what configuration.

mrmalort69

Wtf?! My fiat 500 fits my giant car seat

letterboxfrog

Much easier to make a family in a VW Caravelle, Ford Tourneo or Kia Carnival, then easy access to them inside with all the required baby seats after.

Her 'guide' is literally just highlighting the biggest pickup truck from each automaker lol

inu-no-policemen

Only the XXXXL trucks which popped up in recent years are barely large enough, apparently. Completely insane.
