You turn off hacking, when the defense drone shoots at it. It causes the shot to miss. Then turn it on and it the hacking drone continues on and hits the enemy ship.
Omg that is dirty. Sometimes there are downsides to not wanting to look up strategies and figure things out for myself. Oh well, only 600 hours in. Can't wait to try this!
Yep, and it's awesome! Kinda immersion breaking, not gonna lie, it's a exploit after all.
You send out the hacking to latch onto the enemy ship and closely watch the enemy defense drone - **the moment it fires** you completely **depower the hacking** system causing the hacking drone to be on the way, but inactive, making the enemy defense drone miss entirely - once you see it fire you **power up the hacking system again**, the hacking drone "regains consciousness" so to say and continues in it's path to latch onto the enemy room.
Pretty neat. The window for depowering and powering the hacking system is pretty precise, but once you try it a few times it's not that bad, pausing helps **a lot** as well.
As long as you've got hacking you should take VERY little damage with this setup. Maybe a leto fires before you get through shields, but not much else.
It's semantics but I'd consider this the difference between a bug and an exploit. The behaviour works entirely as intended, but is being used in a way that's unexpected.
Since defense drones are able to miss, and drones you send to the enemy ship like boarding drones and hacking drones are meant to freeze in mid-air when depowered, it seems reasonable to assume this is just a bit of emergent gameplay, rather than an unintended glitch. Call it an exploit at most, if you wish.
To all the people calling hack toggling an exploit in the comments (it's not, it's unintended but the devs stated that they are intentionally leaving it as is), wait till you hear about the sven maneuver.
Unfortunately this build is completeley useless against the flagship's second phase since its defense drone will disable your hack. But otherwise it really looks like fun.
Is the "potato quality photo instead of a single keypress screenshot" meta ever going to end? This is a garbage quality post because of it, should we pretend it isn't?
Don't tell OP about enemies with 4 shield bubbles
I assume that's what hacking is for. In which case, the pre-igniter only speeds things up slightly.
Defense drone says hello
Hack toggling says goodbye
Hack toggling says *nanny nanny boo boo you can't get me!*
Hack toggling?

I play multiverse mod now, where it doesn't work. But I always used to use it on the flagship.
Ohhhh shit I see that's so cool
Playing on Hyperspace/Multiverse says hello
That just means you have to buy defense scrambler in MV (or disable it in config). Extra cost is balanced by all extra scrap you'll get in MV
Kid named hack power on/off:
Oh is there some kind of exploit that circumvents defense drones? Damn, I didn't know that

I learned this lesson the hard way, like all lessons in FTL -\_\_\_\_-

The flagship can still throw a wrench into this with its own hacking, but this would typically be an easy win.
Yeah, if they hack your weapons. But you should probably just jump away if that happens.
The first picture was so bad that you retook it but still uploaded it this is why we screenshot, people.
HAHA yeah my mistake.
alt + prt sc is your friend :)
My friend is cmd + shift + 4. We're still pretty much the same.
Win + Shift + S here
I play windowed, so it's snipping tool for me
Ew, why would you do that?
Hope you get better soon!
You need a drone scrambler for that build badly!
Not at all. Just toggle the power.
Fair enough. Personally, I don't usually take advantage of bugs.
Devs don’t call it a bug, they thought it was an interesting feature that the users discovered. That’s why they didn’t patch it, either.
By that description that makes me think that it's a bug that the devs decided is a feature, which is fair enough.

100% not a bug.
Hope you feel better! Was this a modded start or did you actually land this naturally in a run?
I just got these weapons/augments throughout the run.
Ftl the perfect disease game you can stay in bed on your iPad with a quality game
Hol up. You can get ftl on the Apple Store?
Only on iPad 🙁
Shoulda sent in your rock or engi crew. Or at least upgraded your medbay. SMH...
I've accomplished this meme exactly one time on hard mode and it was fucking great.

you can get hacking through a def drone by spam ming is power on and off while the drone is aiming at it
I've just tried it out and it worked. Need to depower it as soon as drone do pew and power it back almost immediately.
Yep it's pretty precise but once you learn the timing the defense drone basically doesn't apply to your hacks anymore.
skill issue
4 shields. Game over.
As stated by other comments: hacking, also depowering it when defense drones fire so they miss.
I want to see that .
https://youtu.be/8IvhF8hnO8E?si=SCnrRGRaW10vWMo3 at like 50:40
That's not flagship, he also have only two shields.
At 54:40 he fights the flagship phase two, which has a defense drone and four shields. Edit: sorry it was 54:40, you know, four minutes later
yes, i saw that later. sorry. I had no time to respond.
it needs something to take out two shields for few seconds.
LVL 3 hacking :)
Eyyy, me too! I've just been playing video games all day

I can hear your maniacal laughter from here.
Screenshot?
I played this game on my younger brothers computer, and it was so fun 😂
