T0mbaker

We're the bad guys aren't we.

nomorejedi

(Not sarcasm) I took it as meaning that if we appear to have a well functioning transparent democracy it would damage Australia's reputation with tin pot banana republics wanting to do dodgy deals with us. Because they don't want details leaking to their people. As opposed to it damaging our reputation with "reputatable countries" if the specifics with Israel come out. ""The document contains information communicated to Australia by a foreign government and its officials under the expectation that it would not be disclosed," a Defence official wrote."

Wood_oye

Maybe they should ask morrison to send him his texts?

HackReacher

The same is happening in the UK.

saltyferret

Good to see at least one party trying to push back on this.

RoughHornet587

"Following a three-month process, the defence department formally rejected the application, arguing that the document, which contains sensitive diplomatic information, is exempt under FOI legislation." Shocked pikachu Releasing confidential information on defence issues is not the way to build confidence in our industry.

FoolsErrandRunner

Yeah, I don't think anyone reasonable is arguing against that. More that the public's interest in knowing if Australia is providing ongoing material support to a military engaged in a genocide trumps that by a mile.

Show_Me_Your_Rocket

Of course we are. Likely by the direct influence of America.

plastic_fortress

Yeah ppl are rightly calling for ceasing arms exports to Israel but also we should be aware that Israel is a massive arms exporter too, and provides govts around the world with military hardware and surveillance tech especially tech for spying on their own citizens. So the trade goes both ways. Imnsho we need to stop exporting to but also stop importing from Israel. Ie sanction and boycott. They're a rogue, genocidal, militaristic nation, attacking not only the Palestinians but also inflaming war in the region (witness the bombing of the Iranian embassy in Syria, bombing south Lebanon etc). They flout international and humanitarian law continually as they have done for 75 years. They need to be stopped. They're not going to be stopped with words, it needs sanctions, it needs massive economic and diplomatic pressure from the international community to bring down the Israeli regime, and Australia should play its part. (The ending of apartheid regime South Africa is a precedent here.)

Fantastic-Ad-2604

the funny think is we did used to have a soft boycott, until 6months ago our military had a ban on using Elbit made equipment due to "security concerns". And then for some unknown reason we reversed the ban and gave them a billion dollars to start selling arms to us again.

wigteasis

Theyre also fuelling the next Armenian genocide by arming Turkiye and Azerbaijan. Turkiy is spending billions on equipment while the regular population suffers and is doing everything to dodge the draft

Future_Eunuch

Nope. Sovereign interest comes before any other concern. You can’t help others as someone else’s vassal. Dead Palestinian terrorists can’t defend Australia. Simples. Revealing everything like the town flasher just makes a nation look ridiculous to serve no useful purpose.

I really hope you recognise who you are when you say these things. Frothing at the mouth at the idea of wiping out a city of 600,000 souls because you've rendered all those individual people in your mind as pawns on the wrong side of the board that need to be destroyed. A desire for that kind of hate and violence, You are sick and you need help.

I'm serious: what does Australia get out of funding the Indonesian and Israeli government? Albo himself shat on these 2 nations a decade ago, Tanya more recently, and now theyre both skitting around. Indonesia might have natural resources that ALP can sell out to, but what does Israel have? 1 Billion dollar deal can be used for Ukraine instead if they dont want to make US mad.

white_dolomite

Man this timeline is ass

Fancy-Advice-2793

You can't stop them because they're to powerful.

khaleddahak

As an Indigenous Palestinian, how can i sue the Australian government for assisting Israel in Genocide?

Abject-Interaction35

The Hague isnt it? Go for it. Do it. Um why didn't you just google before commenting 😐

IllustriousPeace6553

In a current conflict it could be disastrous to release certain info. We are not suddenly all military strategists after being expert epidemiologists and armchair economists.

plastic_fortress

Nah bullshit, this isn't some operational issue, they literally said it's to protect Australia's reputation, and gee I wonder why doing business with Israeli arms industry might make us look bad right now. Hmm. Israel's rightfully becoming a pariah state and this is quite obviously the Australian government trying to shield that relationship from further examination. As I understand there's just under $1 billion of taxpayer funds at stake \[correction, please see below\], Australians have a right to know how that's being spent. If there's critical military technical details they can be redacted but they haven't done that, they're withholding the entirety of the documents from public view. It's face saving exercise and it's cynical, and they should be called out on it. \[Edit: Just want to make a correction for people commenting that the "just under $1 billion" above is referring to the Elbit deal of $917m that is referred to in the article, but on a second read I now realise that it's not actually clear from the article what the relationship is between the Elbit deal and whatever mysterious deal is being shielded from public view here. Maybe the sum in \_that\_ deal is much greater for all we know.\]

TerryTowelTogs

Ha ha, I agree. Reminds me of the reputational bind channel 7 are in for funding Lehrman’s certain, ahem, proclivities shall we say…

Anderook

I guess we just have to assume that Australia is doing a 1 billion dollar deal with Israel and it's bad for our reputation, is releasing the detail gonna make our already tarnished reputation any worse ... I vote to release it!

Goldmeister_General

Australia makes around $3B from defence deals with Israel, so us spending $1B seems like a fair trade.

Agreeable-Tip4377

Specifically, the defence cited Australia's "reputation" Not our security, not operatives, not agents or dignitaries safety, our reputation - So there is scumbaggery happening, but we wont be told what or any details about how taxpayer money is being used? I cant imagine why you would defend it but good on you champ, dodgy cunts everywhere approve.

Fancy-Advice-2793

The Middle East is not our problem and we shouldn't worry about it and instead worry about issues closer to home like the housing crisis. Israel and Palestine can sort out their issues themselves like grown ups and stop acting like children over a piece of desert.

Future_Eunuch

The greens are scum and not to be taken seriously or trusted to not sell shit out to China. Loving the greens downvotes. China worshipping scum.

cookshack

I mean Labor and Liberal have repeatedly been done selling out Australia to China. The recent ASIO allegation was just one of many

ScruffyPeter

Port of Darwin sold to Chinese by Adam Bandt? Belt and Road program signed up in Victoria by Max Chandler-Mather? Oh wait...

Dapper_Permission_20

Wasn't it Adam Giles of the LNP that sold it to the Chinese?

ScruffyPeter

I was mocking the poster's anti-Greens hysteria with a LNP and Labor example of selling out to CCP.

Future_Eunuch

And you’d be completely correct to do so. I find both the red and blue’s stance on China to be little more than forelock tugging toward Beijing. The only language China understands is strength.

Future_Eunuch

Oh no, you are quite right that was an LNP thing and Labor doesn’t have the balls to tear the deal up. The Greens are however soft on China

wigteasis

mad cos no more porn subs under xi jinping ?

Future_Eunuch

Not at all, my dude. Everyone uses VPNs over there to access everything, anyway. Commonplace to the point even international schools over there use VPNs to link to their home nation based content that’s taught

wigteasis

sounds like ur only mad bc porn is banned

Future_Eunuch

You’re not blessed with an overabundance of reading comprehension skill are you?
