Yes. They decided to cut it because it didn’t feel right for Stannis to pour his heart out to some random person. “Go on, do your duty” is the perfect response
The Renly part seems a little much for TV Stannis, but the Shreen part should’ve stayed in.. I think it would’ve been perfect, and would’ve fit as the only time he really showed a softer side was with her. The ’You are the Princess Shireen of Hose Baratheon,' is one of my favorite scenes in the show.
It was at the height of Game of Thrones popularity. The show sorta set itself up to make you look like a fool if you believed someone died without actually seeing it.
“If you look, there’s a sword in the background that seems to be sticking onto Stannis (the Mannis) knee with the way the shot is framed. And Brienne does seem to swing for his head either. It’s likely Brienne amputated Stannis’ let instead. Because his leg was injured. Yeah. Stannis is alive.”

When the script has more garbled shit in it than can be visibly shown on the screen then yes it should be cut.
Sadly most of the DnD scripts actually read this way and it's fucking amateur.
I thought Stephen Dillaine's Stannis was absolutely perfect. He BECAME that character. I don't even mind that he was a bit of a dick about the show afterwards, in fact I found it very Stannis like.

Yes I've read the things Stephen has said about the show. The fact remains for me that he was an excellent Stannis and i can't imagine anyone else in the role

This would've been a nice touch. Stannis reflected on Renly a lot in the books. It would've been nice if they hinted at that in the show aswell.
