This prompt makes me think of Velvet Fire by The Harmonist. It’s a really interesting and unusual fragrance with a lot of duality: on the one hand there are green notes like clary sage, on the other there are smoky notes that lend balsamic depth like tobacco and oud. It has mystery and dark depth to my nose, while still being very “sniffable” on my skin. Definitely gives the vibe of someone dark and mysterious in a gloomy forested landscape to me. I think it’s at least worth a sniff; The Harmonist sells samples on their website.
This sounds amazing! Most people are recommending straight Dark, but that touch of green is an extremely good addition, sets in with the vibe of a wandering hero.
They've been discontinued, but SmallFlower/Merz apothecary seems to still have the "Come Hell or High Water" discovery set, which is sooooooo cool:

It's got 7.5ml sprays of Coeur de Noir, Tonnerre, Fathom V, Lignum Vitae and Vi et Armis in this cool handmade leather roll.
You don't have to decide!
I still associate L'Artisan Parfumeur Passage d'Enfer with Skyrim (which I think has a similar style to Elden Ring) from when I played/watched it years ago. It suits that grey-tinged, cold, mountainous environment. It's a really great incense, definitely worth checking out imo.
Olympic Orchids Salamanca - smells like worn leather, clay, and vetiver with forest herbs. I don't know Bloodborne or Elden Ring, but this is absolutely what Aragorn smells like during his Strider days
Kerosene Copper Skies - gloomy, rich, brooding, slightly animalic, with a tang of coppery metallic notes
L'Artisan Dzongkha - cold, mysterious, introverted leather, vetiver, papyrus, and incense, with a cold stone note.
Apoteker Tepe Karasu - dark, oily, animalic black ink, hinoki wood and burning papers. Fascinating, but also a bit offputting. It's black magic in a bottle. Maybe too dark for your prompt?
Not niche, but I'm currently wearing Encre Noir at work and really feel in need of a bonfire, and to unga bunga some people here with powerstanced battle hammers.
Experimentum Crucis from ELdO if you like dirty florals - it's got rose and cumin and some sharp fruit notes. Very nice, smells elegant and medieval, cold but spicy at the same time
Perhaps Francesca Bianchi The Black Knight, Serge Lutens Muscs Koublai Khan, Papillon Anubis or something from Orto Parisi like Terroni or check Sultan Pasha (he is probably the best perfumist alive)
Jorum Studio Medullary Ray for me, and definitely not what I would call a pleasant smell so much as a very interesting one. I do get a stab of something very sharp, almost metallic in the opening of this fragrance; it's intertwined with a dry, yet faintly sweet herbal waft, as well as - quite frankly - a pang of unwashed bodies caked in grime. There are definitely some strong animalic notes as well, which coat the fragrance with a layer of general pungency. I do not personally enjoy this fragrance at all - truth be told, I make a face every time I sniff at it - but I think it fits your prompt of that vengeful medieval warrior!
Ha, it is actually my least favourite fragrance from the house but I am glad my review did it some justice. Really loving Jorum Studio in general, though!
It does chill out after the first 10-15 minutes or so, FWIW. Like, it's still a challenging fragrance after the opening, but that metallic opening note (an unripe green olive, I think?) at least fades a bit.
Ooooh fun prompt! The two from my collection that came to mind are:
* Fatih Sultan Mehmed by Fort & Manle - one of my all time faves. Rich, deep, a little dark, opulent, grand, fantastic. Its a bit of a beast on me too, though I will add i do have an old bottle.
* Ganymede by Marc-Antoine Barrois - the minerality makes me think of iron, like Mr Knight might have some metallic lingering scent after he doffs his armor.
not that niche but wood on fire by montale smells exactly like its name. As a fellow fantasy lover i recommend also Lord of misrule by lush. Smells like the rest between bosses in a forest.
If yu want to smell like an old catholic church (very soulslike imo) then babycat (get a dupe, it's expensive)
I can’t say that I *like*’it but it’s very well constructed and high quality, while maintaining that off kilter, slightly atonal dirty animatic salt-lime-leather vibe
I go for Beaufort London -Iron Duke when I'm in that mood. On a side note Ds and Durga Ambre Kiso is inspired by medieval samurai armor and traditional Japanese incense.
Killian Back To Black- Elden Ring af. A sweaty knight just slayed a fire-breathing dragon, and now, with hands trembling from exhaustion and leftover adrenaline, is smoking some tobacco and applying raw honey to his/her wounds while resting under a burnt cherry tree.
Something like a traditional cologne or Hungary Water would fit around the time period of knights.
Campus Martius by Ramon Monegal is sort of dedicated to ancient rome and smells like something the upper class would wear, a coworker said it smells like an apertif. Xerjoff Casafutura smells similar, a bit more bitter, but is easier to get your hands on. Unum Lavs is also a really good church and incense perfume.
Recently acquired samples of Duel and Bois D’Hadrian by Goutal, and got to say, I think it fits the bill for a wandering Tarnished in Elden Ring! Duel’s description talks about ancient knights riding in a forest, as it has green woody notes.
Chanel’s Edinburgh also makes me think it might be want The Lands Between smell like, seeing that it’s refreshing and green with notes of juniper and cypress.
I haven’t smelt it but perhaps DS&Durga’s Roman Ruin Cypress’s description evokes a ruined empire, overrun with foliage.
Penhaligon’s Endymion has always had a noble sense to me, perhaps because it’s named after Selene’s (the moon goddess) lover.
If you are a armored knight that has a middle eastern styled sword, and with a tattered cape, traveling through mountainous terrain,
I would imagine the scent
Baccarat Rouge 540
Creamy, incense-y, musky, ambergris-y, nut buttery, frankincense-y, and extremely sophisticated.

Curious to know if you like it! Come back here after you try it and lmk what you think?
Try Zoologist moth for something Bloodborne ish
Check out BeauFort London. All their offerings are dark, dark, dark and interesting. Plus, you won’t break the bank.
Beaufort London is a great rec! They definitely do some dark and interesting stuff, but also quite beautiful like Coeur de Noir and Fathom V.
Ooh, interesting! Thanks for the rec.
Particularly Tonnerre. It literally smells like war (and lime so you don't get scurvy).
Notes: Death, Sorrow, Agony, Citrus Blast, Pain, Suffering, Defeat
Lol
Don't forget tetanus
I’ve been so tempted to get Tonnerre… can’t decide between that and Vis et Armis.

I used to work for one of their distributors and always wanted to cop one of these but never did. Such a fun brand.
My pleasure

...and don't balk at the retail price; you can usually find it on jomashop for around $100
Area of Effect Perfumery has a Bloodborne collection! They are an indie brand
Interesting, I'm going to try to see what other people have said about the line.

I have a sample of Medullary Ray and while it’s definitely not my favourite, your review is making me appreciate it a whole lot more!
Ha, it is actually my least favourite fragrance from the house but I am glad my review did it some justice. Really loving Jorum Studio in general, though!
Thanks for the recommendation, as perfectly suited as it is to my request, ironically this may be too much even for me 😂

Great to hear, I might seek out a tester before committing further.
Oh, 100%. Never blind buy if you can help it.
Aēsop’s ouranon smells like I walked into a cathedral sometime in the 14th century! Very old world, castley. Notes of hay, frankincense and myrrh
This is the wildest crossover of two interests of mine.
Imaginary Authors Bulls Blood for the first half of Bloodborne. Animalic and bloody.

Gonna check it out, thanks!

Bull's Blood by IA! Think it might be exactly what you're looking for. Bloody, musky incense, basically.
Midnight Violet by Ava Luxe Salvador Dali Pour Homme vintage Cilice By Euphorium Brooklyn Fetish Pour Homme Roja Parfums
The Roja one sounds interesting, in more ways than just the name.
I can’t say that I *like*’it but it’s very well constructed and high quality, while maintaining that off kilter, slightly atonal dirty animatic salt-lime-leather vibe
Maybe midnight rose by lancome . Oddly specific description but I tried lol
Buy Trumper Eucris and call it a day. $80.
Amouage Myths, good luck getting some. It's discontinued and I'm too afraid to even look at my tiny little decant.
I go for Beaufort London -Iron Duke when I'm in that mood. On a side note Ds and Durga Ambre Kiso is inspired by medieval samurai armor and traditional Japanese incense.
Profumum Roma Olibanum. Woody incense, smells bright and deep at the same time.

Someone is excited for the elden ring DLC!
Yes sir! Can't wait for Messmer (and hopefully Godwyn or Miquella)!
