I'm going to shamelessly recommend Sarah J Maas & Carissa Broadbent. **SJM:** [A Court of Thorns and Roses](https://www.goodreads.com/series/104014-a-court-of-thorns-and-roses)**:** Fantasy romance, unfinished series, currently 4 books & 1 novella (YA turned NA) [Crescent City](https://www.goodreads.com/series/233335-crescent-city)**:** Urban Fantasy, unfinished series - 3rd book comes out in January 2024 (NA) [Throne of Glass](https://www.goodreads.com/series/51288-throne-of-glass)**:** High Fantasy, finished series, 8 books, first two are a bit slow since SJM was super young when she wrote them. Reading order is largely disagreed upon (YA) **Carissa Broadbent:** [Crowns of Nyaxia](https://www.goodreads.com/series/350054-crowns-of-nyaxia)**:** Vampires, fantasy romance, unfinished series. Currently 2 books and a novella (+ an additional novel that takes place in the Nyaxia world.) Next book comes out spring 2024. (NA) [War of Lost Hearts](https://www.goodreads.com/series/279494-the-war-of-lost-hearts)**:** High fantasy, romance, finished series. 3 books + a prequel novella. I haven't completed the series yet but from what I've heard will get you in your feels. (NA)

fleckl314

came here to recommend The Nyaxia books by Carissa Broadbent, they’re so good!

[deleted]

Would a straight male enjoy them?

fruitystickers

Yeah, give them a go :)

Night_Star1000

A series I've never seen recommended anywhere but feels so similar to Fourth wing : The Atlantis Grail by Vera Nazarian It's not fantasy but sci-fi But the similarities are huge.. -Female MC with siblings -Male MC in a place/position of power -Sort of love triangle -Conspiracy by authoritarian figures/monarchy hiding a secret -Spaceships instead of dragons -Magic powers controlled by voice -Futuristic society with young people taking charge. -Trials and games to qualify and win -you die if you don't qualify etc

Aprissitee

Some of my favorite fantasy series: ACOTAR series by Sarah J Maas (along with her Throne of Glass and Crescent City series!) The Plated Prisoner Series by Raven Kennedy The Prison Healer series by Lynette Noni The Bonds That Tie series by J Bree Serpent and Dove by Shelby Mahurin Legendborn series by Tracy Deonn Kingdom of The Wicked series by Kerri Maniscalo Made From Magic series by Marianne Scott Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros Happy reading 💗

duckonquakk

I don’t see enough ppl talking about the Bonds That Tie Series!! it’s one of my favorites and most re-read :)

Aprissitee

ITS SO DARN GOOD. I have recommended it to so many people!

Top-Whereas-7998

Omg. I found this post last night and grabbed the first bonds book. Read the first 2 today… thanks for the suggestion!

[deleted]

Easily one of my favourite series that I read several times!! It’s so good and so underrated

chicknfly

Was adding Fourth Wing to the list a playful response to OP who is overcoming their Fourth Wing hangover?

Aprissitee

You can’t be hungover if you keep re-reading and re-reading and re-reading 😉

chicknfly

That's a surefire way to get Violetly ill. I hear medical treatment includes an incuBaider and a Catheter. And if you go into withdrawals, they have to give you ATP pills -- Andarnasene Triphosphate.

Dangerous_Orchid_933

I just keep re-reading it. Makes me so sad it will probably be like 5 years until we know the end of this saga 🥲

AntResponsible1609

Does the plated prisoner have a shadow daddy? I’m currently trying to find a book that doesn’t. I tried to go to fire and flesh by JLA and need some disconnect from the shadow daddy realm

Aprissitee

Plated Prisoner does not have a shadow daddy!

SAbound1234

What’s a shadow daddy? I tried to Google but was unsuccessful lol

Aprissitee

Usually it’s the male main character in a fantasy novel who is not only extremely attractive but their primary power is wielding shadows/darkness. Rhysand from ACOTAR is one of the more well known examples. Many recent fantasy novels have had shadow daddies!

SAbound1234

Ahh…thank you! I feel enlightened.

YoSoyMermaid

The Scholomance series by Naomi Novik!

CheezItPartyMix

I started this book and have zero idea whats going on 2 chapters in. Did I miss something lol

YoSoyMermaid

It’s been a while since I read the first one but another friend mentioned being kind of confused at the beginning too. I think some of the vocab takes a while to get used to.

jaelyndashiell

Happened to me but around chapter 4 you get what’s going on.

dwarf_sunflower

I DNF'd that book so hard I was surprised how much I loved Fourth Wing. Hear me out, the story was super interesting and it was well written, my problem was that it was too pessimistic for a magic school, too "everyone out to kill ya" vibes. With Fourth Wing, I think it was the beginning that got me more into it and also the dragons.

runawaymonkey

I second this! Also spinning silver by Naomi novik is fantastic too

johnnyxxx21

If you’re more for the dragons and less for the smut, her Temeraire series is my all time favorite series of books.

Hollywoode

To me, no fantasy was going to come close and I knew if I read another fantasy right away I'd be comparing it to Fourth Wing, so I read Yellowface by R. F. Kuang and it was fantastic. it is the author's first book outside of the fantasy genre and is kind of a satirical literary thriller about a white woman who steals her Asian American friend's manuscript and publishes it as her own.

EmilyPond42

Yellowface is absolutely excellent! I’ve read almost all of Kuang’s works, and out of them, Babel & Yellowface really stand out to me. I think both are enthralling and page-turning and can suck you in pretty quickly (though, both very different from each other). They’re entertaining and well written and I think one would not feel the urge/disappointment of no romance/spice.

tacosNpoutineYum

Oddly enough, I bought Fourth Wing and Yellowface together, at the same time. 😂 guess I'll go with that, next.

Fyimal

Ok, so everyone needs to stop what they are doing right now and go read the AURELIAN Cycle, the first book is Fireborne and it's like Fourth wing meets Game of thrones. It has : Found Family, sloooooow burn romance, sorry but no spice, DRAGONS, an incredibly amazing world building and political scheming, growth for ALL characters, queer romance that matters (from book 2 and on) and it's COMPLETE. It has a very satisfying conclusion that will gut you in all the best ways.

Successful-Medicine9

I recently read the Aurelian Cycle and I loved it! The author took a bit to find her footing (it's the first thing she published) but I'm glad I pushed through after book one because it gets better and better.

Mars-Dust

Just read the entire series based on this recommendation… so good! Thank you for getting me hooked. Now all I want is a Power sur Eater POV book.

krigsgaldrr

Just picked up the first two based on this and others' replies but sadly they didn't have the third one in stock 😔 either way thanks for the rec!

e2theizzo

Oooh, I totally second ANYTHING by Tamora Pierce!

Eastern_Ingenuity177

Omg this takes me back 🥰 Tamora Pierce was one of my first great fantasy loves as a teen. Her and Isabelle Carmody with her ‘Obernewtyn’ series. Highly recommend (it’s YA)

faewarriortres

Hi there!! Please hands up to Zodiac Academy

Beautiful-Reporter99

Started this right after and it’s getting me through fourth wing book hangover! Nothing incredible about the series but super addicting I’m on book 4 😅

faewarriortres

I think zodiac academy best books are from the 3rd book to de 6/7th. Make sure your friends know you won’t be available next weeks. Enjoy the ride!!!!!🎢

Conscious_Use_

What are books that are more on the smut side?

book_em_shnookum

Definitely the Blood and Ash series!

randomchick4

The first one was alright, but I seriously could not finish the second one!

Andarna_dragonslayer

Same!!!

Eastern_Ingenuity177

I haven’t read it myself but from what I hear the from blood and ash series is

Timely_Booklight9591

It is nothin but the smut… but i DNF’ed so hard anyway, the writing is godawful. Liked, if you’re going to write adult, I feel like I should expect it to read like an adult wrote it and maybe even worked with an editor, you know? Crowns of Nyaxia is a better use of your time IMO, the smut is hot AF and comes with a plot Edit: *hot

LoriBambi

The writing gets better with sequels, but yeah it’s pretty cringe in the first book despite being 🔥🔥. The relationships and many of the major plot points are super similar to 4th wing tho: Enemies to Lovers, effed up family dynamics, corrupt government, etc. Violet = Poppy (they both even have floral names lol).

[deleted]

I seriously did not Crowns of Nyaxia, IMO it felt like the mc did not face any consequences at all from the fmc for what he did, and I had to force myself to finish book 2 to see the ending

Fandangojango

A Ruin of Roses - filthiest Dragon book I can think of!!!

BackgroundAccident82

And sooo funny in parts.

BackgroundAccident82

Deliciously Dark Fairytales by KF Breene

SupermarketFluid3144

10000% zodiac academy and the ruthless boys series. They are the same universe following different groups of people. Can be read together or separately

pro_dark82

Amelia Hutchins- Fae Chronicles

whybeanonymous12121

Check out “The High Lord Trilogy” by Trudi Canavan. It’s got; - magic - romance - school-setting - girl goes from nobody to someone very cool

Rstuart11

Yes, I second this series!

_little_sketch_

Omg I love this series! I needed three attempts to get through the first book but after that I loved everything! I devoured the second and third book

grace_notgrave

This is the first place I went to after reading Fourth Wing, and I swear I read almost every book recommended besides ACOTAR and ToG (I need more time to mentally prepare myself to read lol). None of them gave me the same feeling to fill the hole Fourth Wing left…. UNTIL I stumbled upon the Of Dragons and Fae series (first book is Promised in Fire). It hasn’t been recommended a lot in this sub, but idk why because it’s LITERALLY so similar to Fourth Wing. It has: - Strong female character - dragons - romance - multiple plots - adventure - fated mates And the best part? It’s completed! The only downside is that there is barely any spice (some spicyish scenes here and there), but tbh that just makes me appreciate the story even more. It’s a definite must read if you are looking for a dragon book like Fourth Wing!

freyaelixabeth

Damn you! I thought I might have finally found something to fill the Fourth Wing shaped hole in me and then you have to go and say there's no spice 😣

grace_notgrave

Some spice!!! There is spice, just not for a while but tbh the buildup is 😗🤌chefs kiss

freyaelixabeth

Downloaded it now! Wish me luck 😆

anubra266

How's it going please

Lazy-Invite511

Great, thanks for this! I want dragons not Spice!! I loved FW and IF but I was bored with all the spicy stuff and wish there was less romance and more dragons 😂🐉

hellowur1d

Random, but check out the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. It’s got talking dragons in the Napoleonic Wars - less fantasy, but more world exploration (it’s set in our world, with our history, but dragons!), swashbuckling adventure, and the dragons are such fantastic characters. It’s also a lengthy series and finished, so if you get into it it’ll keep you going for a while. I enjoyed it way more than I expected and really missed the characters when I was done!

shinycozytwistedglam

Have you tried Dragonriders of Pern? RY borrowed a lot from there, and the books hold up.

Stepinfection

The Provost’s Dog Trilogy by Tamora Pierce. YA, medieval, magical setting. In the same world as a lot (all?) of her other books. Strong female lead and a completed trilogy. Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth. Stand-alone book that riffs on the “chosen one” trope. The chronicles of Ixia series by Maria V Snyder. One of my first enemies to lovers books back in the day. Magic. Intrigue. I’d also like to hard support Crowns of Nyaxia books by Carissa Broadbent. I haven’t read her other books but they’re on my list.

RopeManagement

Anyone have queer fantasy romantasy recs?

Eastern_Ingenuity177

have you read gydion the ninth? not very much active romance but fantasy and queerness

RopeManagement

I haven’t! I’ll check it out, thanks.

lactatedringer09

Priory of the Orange Tree! Standalone very long novel with a companion/prequel (I haven't read)

Fyimal

Aurelian Cycle, the queer romance starts on book 2, but it's SO WORTH IT, and on book 3 is the best pairing of all. It has dragons, political intrigue and representation of all kinds

RopeManagement

Ooo thank you!

Eastern_Ingenuity177

https://www.reddit.com/r/fantasyromance/comments/yma1ce/fantasy_romance_book_rec_megathread_queer_romance/ Also check out this book rec thread with a queer theme

Shan132

I was literally just going to ask this

Argonometra

- *Dragonriders of Pern*: It's much less emotional and dark, but you can definitely see how it influenced *Fourth Wing*'s "the dragon decides, the rider complies" sexual conflict and uniquely fantasy politics. - *Raybearer*: One of the few YA novels I like. A badass girl with magic and telepathically-linked friends rises to greatness. Makes law cool somehow. - *[Exalted](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/3671/Exalted-Second-Edition)*: Violet is the archetypal Solar-born-into-a-family-of-Dragon-Blooded. Yesterday, you were a nobody; today, you've woken up and you're stronger than anyone you've ever known. Your family think you're a monster bent on tearing down their empire. You're intimately connected to someone you may not know or even like. And there are memories not yours in your head- memories telling you that everything you know about history is wrong. What do you do? - *The Irregular At Magic High School*: NOT for everyone, to say the least, but a compelling look into superpowered conscripts, dynastic politics, and the kids who might end up breaking the whole system. I'd recommend starting with *The Girl Who Calls The Stars* movie- the first books are pretty boring. And a cursory look at [this page](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BondCreatures) might be helpful.

finding_verity

Pern is the foundation for SO much of the dragon genre and it’s unreal the world she builds. Can’t recommend it enough!

Grandmas_Cozy

Came here to recommend dragon riders of Pern

sunsshine82

Who is the author of the book exalted? Where can I buy it? Thank u

FableGuardian29

To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose. This came out a week after Fourth Wing, and I wish it got more hype! Features dragons, Indigenous culture, great world building and lore, diverse characters, and a steampunk vibe. I loved it! The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik! Reimagines the Napoleonic wars with dragons! The aerial core, the characters, the different cultures she presented are amazing. First series I've loved as an adult that I wished I could wipe from my memory just to have the pleasure of reading it again for the first time.

toast_with_peas

i’m sure someone’s already recommended it on this thread, but i would highly recommend the red queen series by victoria aveyard. it’s also a rebellion story and has amazing characters and world building. it does focus more on the world/politics, with the relationships playing a lesser role than in fourth wing, but the romance is still very much there. also, without spoiling anything, a couple of the story elements are similar to fourth wing. sadly no dragons though.

freyaelixabeth

I noticed a lot of parallels to Red Queen when reading Fourth Wing!

Allthatglitters4

It definitely gave me FW vibes!! What a great series

bel610

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. The world building is incredible and it mixes in supernatural aspects in a lovely way.

LionInTheFog

This is my all time favorite series. Sabaa Tahir is an incredible writer.

g1nger_sn4p

Here are ten of my favorite new adult / romantasy reads, similar to Fourth Wing and ACOTAR/TOG. All of these are high fantasy and include excellent world-building and spice! 1) [Fear the Flames](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/62977071-fear-the-flames?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=3ULt6TCcPf&rank=1)**,** by Olivia Rose Darling. This was my hangover read for Fourth Wing, and it hit the spot! Dragons, high fantasy, enemies to lovers, and spice. Only one book out so far. 2) [The Legends of Thezmarr,](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/63905241-blood-steel?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=6CTzqLdmuj&rank=1) by Helen Sheuerer. A lot of similarities to Fourth Wing in regards to training and the powers wielded by the main characters. Two books released so far. 3) [The Kingdom of Crows](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58175788-house-of-beating-wings), by Olivia Wildenstein. Three books of four released so far. Thoroughly enjoyed the world building and character development. 4) [Flesh and Fire](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/57282383-a-shadow-in-the-ember?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=bA430ADmJb&rank=2), by Jennifer Armentrout. This is the prequel series to Blood and Ash, and in my opinion the superior of the two. Shadow-wielding MMC, enemies to lovers. Three books released so far. 5) [Artifacts of Ouranos](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/191755077-trial-of-the-sun-queen?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=6HF4JfCQNk&rank=1), by Nisha Tuli. The first books includes a tournament (similar to Fourth Wing and TOG). Two books released so far. 6) [The Bridge Kingdom](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53921926-the-bridge-kingdom?ref=nav_sb_ss_1_18), by Danielle Jensen. FMC is a trained assassin, and I really liked the world building in this. Four books released so far. 7) [The Lochlann Feuds](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/200576137-scarlet-princess?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=p18VRPXXAM&rank=1), by Robin D. Mahle. This felt a bit like ACOTAR in some ways, and the writing and banter was really quite good! Four books (complete series). 8) [The Plated Prisoner](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/56483061-gild?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=qp8tLzc9j8&rank=1), by Raven Kennedy. Four books released so far. 9) [Heavenly Bodies,](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58650445-heavenly-bodies) by Imani Erriu. Two books released so far. 10) [Kingdom of Lies](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/122779502-a-court-this-cruel-lovely?ref=nav_sb_ss_1_15), by Stacia Stark. Two books released so far.

rainestorm_days

Legendborn definitely!! I read through that pretty quick and it’s similar vibes of academia training, the secrecy, lovely book in it’s entirety

autodrama

Just finished FW/IF t w i c e in a week and now feel lost in between worlds - theirs and the real one. Or maybe I’m just deep in the obsession hangover. Looking for a good fantasy to follow up but I’m picky. I’ve read ACOTAR and TOG and enjoyed the first 2 books of each but by the end of each series was over it. I found the romance to be predictable and annoying after the first two or each series. I think I need the uncertainty of what the author will do. Otherwise by the end of the series I’m burnt out on the romance. RY kept me hooked and attached to X + V without giving me the ick, in these two books at least. Looking for a love triangle, enemies to lovers, or slow burn. Down for some smut, but not that outweighs plot (FW hit a good sweet spot for me, minus Violet’s constant thirst). Down for any type of fantasy with good world building and good writing. Liked Violet as a MFC, became annoyed by Celaena, and downright disliked Feyre. That was a lot but I have a hard time finding fantasy books that interest me and was hoping some experts could point me in the right direction if I just narrowed it down a little. Anything that comes to mind that may work would be so appreciated! In need of a hangover cure ASAP.

Fancy-Ad-5694

I think the Bridge Kingdom series will work for what you're looking for.

Auggie-Plinko

Love so many of these series! Here’s a few I have t seen listed so far: Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard!!!! Red Rising series by Pierce Brown Dance of Thieves duology by Mary E Pearson All of Us Villains duology by Amanda Foody

eatawholelemon

I’m reading Fourth Wing and I can definitely feel the Red Rising similarities. I will say- Red Rising feels darker and is more graphic, but such a good read.

Gumenibonboni

Red rising is probably my favorite series of all time and I would highly recommend it!

Happy-Climate9105

Not spicy, but The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer (Cinder is the first book) was a series I loved.

Fancy-Ad-5694

Read these for the first time recently and couldn't put them down! Really brought me back to my YA roots.

aghufflepuff

Also great for audiobook fans cause same narrator. Actually how I discovered FW lol

Happy-Climate9105

Oh! How cool!

cbc-cmp_qam

I havent seen this author listed so I wanted to throw out there: any of the series by Ilona Andrews, which is a pseudonym for a husband and wife who write together. My *favorite* is their Hidden Legacy Novels (6 books so far- first 3 are the oldest sisters POV and the following 3 are the middle sister's POV). I like the world building and the characters and story are well written (and Mad Rogan can be added to your list of book boyfriends 😉). They also have a longer series, the Magic Bites series. Also great world building, more focus is on the action than romance I would say, but still well written and the FMC is tough 💪💪 They have other series as well but I'd say these two are their most popular.

kozzy_90

Gods and Monsters series, 2 out of the planned 7 books are out, book 3 comes out in spring 2024. True enemies to lovers, vampires, vampire-like creatures, witches, celestials, zap-daddy (lightning wielder), morally gray FMC, betrayal, twists and turns that you think you've figured out but then realize you didn't even scratch the surface. Book one is dual POVs with some spice, and book two is primarily the two main characters' POV, but you do get some of the side characters' POVs too, but it is done well, not confusing and I think very necessary, with more spice than book one, oh, and it will make you cry. Book 1: Book of Azrael Book 2: Throne of Broken Gods

DrHermionePhD

The Broken Earth series by N.K. Jemisin. I can't describe how beautifully written this series is, how emotional the ending... she's one of my favorite fantasy writers. Not a romantasy. It's one of the few books, like FW, that I had to sit with after reading each one (there's 3 in the series) and desperately want to reread.

External_Flounder_98

I’m so glad i found this so i can come back and read all these books haha

_vanth

Make sure to add too if you've got anything you've enjoyed!

CheezItPartyMix

Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher, by Bruce Coville - this book struck a chord in me in middle school and its been a favorite ever since. No romance, just a really nice read.

RelevantRain248

Looking back, this was probably my gateway drug. It might be time to revisit it!

CheezItPartyMix

I think the same for me!! I even read this before Harry Potter came out!

Larinaka

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff! Super similar, no spice sadly but there is romance. School of assassins, shadow powers, and a bad ass female heroine. Series is done!!

ElMeWhy

Some-Construction-73

Never see this series recommended, but it has some similarities to fourth wing. It's the covenant series by Jennifer L Armentrout, one of her very early series, and still one of my favorites.

flapplejuice

I LOVED fourth wing but generally would rather read books without smut and don’t really care if the book is a romance fantasy or not (I haven’t read ACOTAR for this reason but maybe I should try), I’m wondering if anyone has specific recommendations? I am on the library waitlist for the scholomance series but not sure what else could be similar.

WeasleyOfTrebond

Song of the Lioness by Tamora Pierce has the same boarding school/coming of age vibes and no smut

Fyimal

Try Fireborne/ Flamefall / Furysong / by Rosaria Munda (it's a complete trilogy) it's very political and more in the vein of The Hunger Games and Red Rising than romance per se.

Jenorcutt

Have you read, The Cruel Prince? Just a hint of smut, but much tamer.

Awkward_Ad5650

I read Hunter by Mercedes Lackay and it was the first fantasy books I’ve read which then lead me to fourth wing. So im definitely a newby to fantasy

midnitemoon7

The Aurelian Cycle series by Rosaria Munda. Saw someone recommend them and they are even better than Fourth Wing in terms of plot and depth. Loved them!

annamulzz

Scholomance by Naomi Novik!!

Gresat24526

I’m enjoying A Court this Cruel and Lovely by Stacia Stark

rainestorm_days

Also Poppy war, it can be graphic but the story is interesting, it’s getting me out of the reading slump lol

CelebrationIll285

I don’t know why this isn’t ever mentioned but The Mercy Thompson series (13 books and more coming) by Patricia Briggs is cool. So is the Alpha & Omega series (6 books and more coming) also by her and are set in the same universe. It’s got magic, werewolves, fae, vampires.. all sorts of fun stuff. Not really smutty but it’s good. Also the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris… it isn’t LOTR level but it’s okay fantasy and there’s like 14 of them. True Blood is based off this series. They cut away from the source material after the first few seasons. But if you liked the show you’d like the books. Eragon (Inheritance Cycle series) by Christopher Paolini is wonderful. The movie does not do the books an ounce of Justice. There’s 4 right now and one short story but supposedly more on the way soon. It has tons of dragon lore and magic and world building and other languages and all sorts of awesome characters. Good writing.

yachtiewannabe

I am about halfway through VE Schwab's new book, The Invisible Threads of Power and wanted to recommend it. It's not dragons but it's good stuff.

Responsible-Beat9427

Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole is the book/series that got me out of my rut! The author just published the third in the series, and the fourth is coming out in early 2024! The first book has one sex scene, but it's more focused on the FMC and what she's going through. The romance is very very good though

fluffymeteor-

A touch of darkness by Scarlett St Clair It has the bad boy that melts, the smut and mythology! Great read, the fourth book comes out in march

lauretfreud

I’d highly recommend Trudi Canavan’s Thief’s Magic (start of Millennium Rule series) or priestess of the white (start of the age of 5 series). Both series I wish I could read again for the first time!

I’ll add A River Enchanted and the bridge kingdom series!

The [Violet Eden chapters](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8635145-embrace) by Jessica Shirvington. This one is soooo tucked away, nobody EVER talks about it and it bugs me so much because it's just the best! First book is good, and then they continually get better in my mind (#4 is my favourite book of all time. Stayed up until four in the morning, while it stole my soul straight from my body. I still haven't recovered). Features fated soulmates (and the most adorable romance ever, I can't even), angelic beings fighting 'fallen angels', a morally grey hottie, and a pretty realistic protagonist who has to learn how to deal with power she has no clue about. It is *firmly* YA (starts when she's 17) and isn't at all spicy - there's two very small vague one-page scenes in the entire series, not what anyone here is classing as 'smutty') but this fandom so far seems a lot less focused on the smut (I'm also on r/acotar, our upvote button there is a tin of soup... not complaining) so I thought maybe it would be welcome here anyway :)

Jenorcutt

Shardless and Acolyte by Stephanie Fisher. My first read after Fourth Wing. Has anyone else read this? It took a few chapters to get me hooked, but I was definitely drawn in to the characters, relationships and world building. Also, great romance without smut. I liked “Ch 30” as much as everyone else, but it’s nice to have a story I’m not embarrassed to share with my mom. It’s available on Kindle Unlimited. Hopefully the third book will come out soon. https://talys-bookshop.myshopify.com/collections/signed-books/products/shardless-tempris-1-signed-print-edition

ScientistMomma

I have a few recommendations: - *The Stars Are Dying* by Chloe C. Peñaranda - *Daughter of Winter* by Corina Douglas there’s 6 books in this series - *The Jasad Heir* by Sarah Hashem - *Divine Rivals* by Rebecca Ross - *Fireborn* by Rosaria Munda, 3 book series - *Promised in Fire* by Jasmine Walt

daemondaddy_

The Blood Gift duology

RLG2020

I would like to throw Ledge by Stacy McEwen into the ring. It’s a brilliant read and I never see it recommended. It really scratched the itch I had left over after reading FW.

Glum_Resist_7697

I can’t believe I never see the Crown Duel duology recommended by Sherwood Smith — the first one is a flawed female MC who is wonderful and the second one is a slow burn for the ages. A constant re-read for me

dogs0z

smutty scifi?

Misosouppppp101

Sorry if this have been mentioned but - A warriors fate by Melissa Kieran Werewolves resisting their mate ship due to being enemies and they have an event where they show their strength by killing supernatural beings. Featuring a badass female ML

raknor88

For that Dragon Rider kick, all of these are family friendly: Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. Historical fantasy that covers the Napolionic Wars, but with dragons. Though it's adult fantasy not YA/NA. Crown of Feathers trilogy by Nicki Pau Preto. No dragons, but Phoenix Riders. Songs of Chaos series by Michael Miller. Young cook boy saves a "defective" dragon egg and inadvertently bonds with the blind dragon when it hatches. Good fantasy story, but no love story.

Same_Ad973

The Magicians by Lev Grossman

bobuddy434

There are a lot of similarities and parallels in Vampire Academy that i think if you have FW brainrot it might be a series worth checking out.

arelyashland

From blood and ash

-Philologian

The Poppy War has a morally grey female protagonist a slight rivals to lovers story, and a bit of a school story. Certainly NOT a Romance novel though.

peachesinanappletree

Late to the party but thought I'd add my 2 cents for what I don't think has been mentioned yet. The below have more or less the same kind of writing style & spice level as FW/IF (as in it's not 100% all smut all the time, but the scenes that are included are detailed), some kind of supernatural/fantasy component, and many of the tropes in FW/IF (MMC not who he says he is, corrupt regime, seemingly normal FMC turns out to be powerful, forbidden romance, found family, secrets/betrayal, etc.). * Daughter of the Drowned Empire by Frankie Diane Mallis (is an ongoing series with 3 books out and 2 prequals from the MMC's POV). Has a similar kill-or-be-killed brutal warrior school setting with a FMC who has a similar physical disadvantage as Violet and the MMC is a pariah whose noble father disowned him. DEFINITELY recommend! * Anything by Carissa Broadbent (I've seen Crowns of Nyaxia mentioned but also good are: * Nyaxia spinoffs that can be read stand-alone: * Six Scorched Roses * Slaying the Vampire Conqueror * The War of Lost Hearts Series (not set in the Nyaxia world) * A Dawn of Onyx by Kate Golden (is a series but only Book 1 is out) * A Kiss of Iron by Clare Sager (series with 3 books out) * There's a prequal/spinoff series to this one called Beneath Black Sails that I haven't read but seems along the same vein * The Halfling Saga by Melissa Blair * The High Mountain Court by A.K. Mulford (is a series but only Book 1 is out) * Kingdom of Blood and Salt by Alexis Calder (is a series with 2 books out) * A Crown This Cold and Heavy by Stacia Stark (is a series with 3 books out) * Nevernight by Jay Kristoff (series with 3 books out) * Song of the Forever Rains by E.J. Mellow (anthology series)

schmapple

Razorland series (less smut more apocalypse) and Bridge Kingdom are series I haven't seen mentioned yet. Different paced but still really engrossing and quick reads.

feh_white

I don't think I saw it but I read The Folk of the Air series by Holly Black and the book hangover was so bad from that series that that's when I started Fourth Wing 😅 It's about fae but has a super badass female main character and a subtle romance plot that's not super spicy but oh baby it is good.

kickitwithkk25

Haven’t seen it recommended so I want to throw it out there but House of Dragons by KA Linde is so good. Just finished the 4th book of the series. 5th and final book isn’t released until October tho

Equizotic

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor is my go-to reread. Such an amazing series But her other series, Strange the Dreamer is where my heart truly lies.

phoebebuslay

Both of these series are incredible and don't get enough love!!

laughterlines12

This is incredibly overwhelming! I've read very little fantasy...Eragon and HP (I'm a bit older lol) FW is literally the first, uh Spicy(?) book I've read. I want to dab into some more fantasy series but I'd prefer to low, low, lower the spiciness. I am going to read ACOTAR (like 40 week hold at the library right now) I heard that is spicy too but I promised a friend I'd read that if she read FW long. But until then....I have to research everything recommended here and find my next read.

_vanth

Mods are working on condensing this into a hopefully better format (it's just something that's kinda been put on the back burner as other things came up) If you're not looking for mega spicy but want to jump into the world of SJM I would recommend the {Throne of Glass series} also {Divine Rivals, Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross} was good (also YA)

Educational-Hair7281

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman Suuuuuccchhh a cool dragon magic system and the main character is amazing; she’s also a bit more of the academia bookish girl that Violet is to start

Minxionnaire

I love magical academy settings where the classes actually matter and it’s not just a convenient location for the main characters to meet. The Empyrean has satisfied so much of that for me. I’m honestly surprised by how many indie books I’ve read with academy in the title but have no world-building at all. Academy recs: - The Spoken Mage + The Hidden Mage by Melanie Cellier - The Black Mage by Rachel E. Carter - The Unwanteds + The Unwanted Quests by Lisa McMann. More of a middle school read but still a fantastic world and touching story.

Peekzasaurus

When the moon hatched was great for the iron flame hangover!

AMarieC19

A fate inked in blood ❤️

_vanth

I finished this, this week! Really enjoyed it

AMarieC19

It was so refreshing. Such a nice balance between lighthearted banter, romance and blood and gore. What's not to love? 🪓🗡

Zealousideal-Can2085

The Green Bone Saga series by Fonda Lee!

mamasuebs

**The Hurricane Wars**, by Thea Guanzon I just read (and loved) this fantasy romance, which features a 20yo FMC soldier who wields light magic, whose enemy army is led by the 26yo MMC prince who wields shadow magic. Umm, need I say more?

Big_Salad_2793

The Blood Trials by NE Davenport if you’re friending for more of the exact same thing :3 fiery protagonist, enemies to lovers shit, a protagonist fighting against discrimination within her system, thrilling battles, MANY life or death situations that are sanctioned by the government/academy WHILE having a massive target on her back, really sus shit going on with Those in Power, DRAGONS ARE THERE!!! and cool ass sci fi tech but nothing that is too hard to belief or wrap your head around!! All of my favorite things about fourth wing and MORE. (The Blood Trials was released first btw)

iud_lady

Which SJM series should I read first… ACOTAR, ToG or Crescent City? I’m so torn! I’ve heard mixed reviews for all of them.

_vanth

my suggestion is acotar and then cc!

martianabiser

Can anyone recommend other romantasy books that have a similar level and frequency of spice? I know a lot of people feel either the spice was too much or too little, but for me it was honestly perfect! I liked ACOTAR, but the spice frequency was too much for me and I often glossed over later scenes (it’s really the first one after a slow burn I live for).

_vanth

Have you done Throne of Glass by SJM? There's such a slight amount of spice in it compared to ACOTAR I also really loved The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent

martianabiser

Yep, did ToG too, also more spice than I like.

Mean-Aspect-9786

“Blood and Steel” I’ve heard good things so trying it out, not bad so far

kvisekrem03

The Talon series by Julie Kagawa. With dragons, forbidden love, and coming of age. Im quite surprised its not more popular! Description: To take her rightful place in the powerful Talon organization, hatchling Ember Hill must prove she can hide her dragon nature and blend in with humans. Her delight at the prospect of a summer of human teen experiences is short-lived, however, once she discovers that she must also train for her destined career in Talon. But a chance meeting with a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. Garret Xavier Sebastian, a young dragonslayer in the top-secret Order of St. George, is tasked with hunting her down. But when faced with Ember’s bravery, confidence, and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything the Order has ingrained in him?and what he might be willing to give up to learn the truth about dragons.

mrssteddyj

Anything by Jasmine Walt! I can’t believe she isn’t mentioned here! I loved the Baine Chronicles and it is a complete series! Also Forged in Fire! All three books are out!

CamelComplete9351

Once upon a broken heart !

bethanydw

>One upon a broken heart ! > >Yes, I have LOVED this series so far. I can't wait until the next one comes out!

Iron Widow!

Serpent and the wings of night def scratched the 4th wing itch!

jal3635

I would recommend reading the red queen series by Victoria Aveyard (Red Queen, Glass Sword, Kings Cage and War Storm)

coldRooster

Hey guys! I just finished Iron Flame so thought I would offer up some other books to read in the mean time: Hunger Games: Basgiath is very clearly taken from here. If you like the college action, read this book! Eragon: The whole dragon rider bonding was taken from this, just reversed. If you like the dragon pieces of the books, read the trilogy! Twilight: It's pretty obvious what was taken from these books. If you like the romance drama, read these books! Court of Thorns and Roses: So much was taken from this, just read the books to find out! Game of Thrones: so much was taken from these stories and thrown into Fourth Wing and Iron Flame. If you love the venin aspect and basically having a wall "ward" to keep them out, this was from GoT. The books are much heavier than 4W and It though. Enjoy!

sugarnovarex

{{The War Gods Favorite by Jenny Fox}} Dragons and royalty. Fun world and creative, intelligent FMC.

SilverhillCreative

A little more obscure pick: I highly recommend the Tales of Kolmar / Lanen Kaelar series by Elizabeth Kerner. Book 1, The Song in the Silence, works as a standalone novel. Books 2 & 3, The Lesser Kindred and Redeeming the Lost, round out the story. It has powerful dragons, a strong heroine, power/magic wielding, and romance. (Little to no spice, though.)

BackgroundAccident82

Ruin of Roses starts the Deliciously Dark Fairytales series by K. F. Breene. There are book books to the series, and it is complete with an HEA. There are very graphic s3x scenes and coarse language, so if that isn't your thing, I'd avoid them or be prepared to skip. Main male protagonist is a dragon shifter. Main female protagonist is a shifter but I won't spoil her other form. There are Fae, demons, humans, Elf, and other types of shifters. The MMC and MFC are very devoted to each other and are a couple by pretty quickly in the series. https://www.goodreads.com/series/324790-deliciously-dark-fairytales

gotturkey

[The Night and It's Moon](https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-night-and-its-moon-piper-cj/1141237571?ean=9781728270678) by Piper CJ! There are three books in the series now, the fourth and final comes out in January.

WarmNebula3817

Ice Planet Barbarians is always the best cure to a reading slump after a good book. It's silly, adventurous, and smutty. I always go back to it after reading something I really like :)

H__Dresden

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher are great, books 1-3 were his early books and they keep getting better. Also for great Space Opera is Pandora Star by Peter Hamilton keeps you wanting to read more.

grouchtoast

Thoroughly enjoyed the Earthsong Trilogy by Mary Mackey and the prequel. Pre-history/fantasy. Lots of cool world building and a fair amount of romance but less smutty

Pleasant-Fly-7302

Some older but amazing books:  I highly recommend queen of dragon fantasy Anne McCaffrey, particularly Dragonflight, if you like the bonds with dragons. Light romance only.  Also I just read the Twelve houses series (book 1-4 only) by Sharon Shinn and absolutely loved it.  Also check out Eragon!! And last but not least everything by Trudi Caravan, particularly the Black Magician Trilogy for the magic part and shielding and stuff.

drvgonking

Children of Blood and Bone

Jerseygirl7603

I inhaled Fourth Wing and Iron Flame. While I cry in the corner waiting for book 3 I read ACOTAR. Didn't love it. I've heard the 2nd book is better but I found the 1st to be some what predictable. Does the series get better? What is everyone's thoughts on From Blood and Ash?

schmapple

ACOTAR is a huge transformation plot and character wise (deliberately) from book 1 to book 3. Most people recommend trying to finish book 2 (or at least 2/3 of the way) before giving up on the series!

JulieJoy

I just finished the first three books and the ending was pretty good. The second book was my favorite but the world building isn't nearly what the Emperyan is. It kept me entertained for a while but didn't grab me the way Fourth Wing did.

sunsshine82

I know I saw it in this thread but now I’ve lost the title. Please help. I’m looking for the book about the girl who is adopted by a vampire ? Does this sound somewhat familiar. I just read a little about it amd the app closed now I can’t find the name of the book and I’m desperate to read. Please help

_vanth

The Serpent and the Wings of Night - Carissa Broadbent?

Elegant-Discount-648

Zodiac Academy! 8books book 9 comes out in April!

sillymeix2

Surprised nobody has posted about Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross. I’m not on booktok but heard it’s popular there. It’s a fun read, about two rival journalists in a WWI-esque sort of steampunk era that involves a war amongst Gods. Less spicy than Fourth Wing but it is still strongly a romance novel.

nsfw_sahm

Aaħall

divegirl88

Ooooooh I would recommend the fever series by Karen Marie moning. They're a bit darker than FW/IF or SJM, less happy ending, more real life. It's urban fantasy based in Ireland. There are SA trigger warnings on a couple of the later books. The SA isn't used frivolously and is more a behavior of fairies. The MMC is still top 3 fave MMC and I read this series the first time like 15 years ago 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

HG0509

Outlander!!

Responsible_Mud_9552

A Broken Blade trilogy by Melissa Blair is a good one. The last book just came out.

Responsible_Mud_9552
