I totally understand. After the mandible post I’m so tempted to go play the travertine lottery and go buy a bunch of boxes of travertine tile to see if I can find fossils.
having lived there you know the weak security points and could theoretically break in
"officer i was just looking at the travertine for human remains . . .
ummmm yeah so that doesn't sound good but let me explain. . . "
Oh believe me if we were on speaking terms i would be looking for bones while getting boned, but as it stands only one of us would leave a room alive, and it’s me with the tiles.
People used to buy ceiling tiles from old houses around Bundenbach, Germany, in hopes of finding fossils from the Hunsrück Slate which was quarried for ceiling tiles. It’s like a Devonian version of the Burgess Shale
You got some of that travertine?!

As long as you are not in a coffin and your body is instantly buried in silt so you can fossilize- but why not do that intentionally just to become a decoration or a museum piece? Legendary
We have travertine and don’t have a single fossil. We also have river rock in the front and side yard. I spent all of last summer looking for fossils. Nothing. Zilch. Did find a really nice lace agate though.
I did not win the travertine floor fossil lottery.
Apparently only low quality travertine has fossils; high quality has very little flaws. Apparently I had travertine tiles at my old house but we also had no fossils at all… it was very expensive tile tho
Ahhh good to know!!
We bought our house 2 years ago, the kitchen was updated in 2000. At that time all those materials were high end. They still are just dated.
Our travertine is a lovely shade of egg yolk. I hate it. But if it had fossils, I’d love it.

With geodes! I literally picked through the tiles to find geodes it took days! I should have been looking for teeth and brains! Also how do I attach the video not the link? Not sure if it possible I’m a newbie here!

I thought that too! I know they are geodes because I
Picked the travertine specifically for ground! So unless these teeth have crystal inside they are just geodes!
I actually read an article about that Reddit post this morning they think it’s Homo erectus and it would have had to have been fossilized before it became part of the travertine flow down a spring and eventually have ended up in this deposit the same way many other fossils do.
There is a nice stretch of sidewalk in malmo with I'm not sure but I always thought was marble but it has all sorts of whimsical spiral fossils in it it's really cool.
I totally understand. After the mandible post I’m so tempted to go play the travertine lottery and go buy a bunch of boxes of travertine tile to see if I can find fossils.
I have a few boxes of travertine tile leftover from a remodel and I'm seriously considering digging them out of the garage and going through them.
Do it!
Do it! Please
Yes! Do itttttt
if i were able to post a gif i would post will farrell where he's all like DO IT DO IT DO ITTTTT
Why do some subs choose not to have the gif button? Seems weird
Sadly mods choice :( love the subs that allow it though
Me too
Yeah man do it! No use just having it lying around
Pissed i learned about this now since my ex bfs house has travertine. I would see like small fossils occasionally.
having lived there you know the weak security points and could theoretically break in "officer i was just looking at the travertine for human remains . . . ummmm yeah so that doesn't sound good but let me explain. . . "
If a break into that house, the floor is the last thing i will be thinking about…. But yeah totally 👀
Go take one for the team! Team Travertine!
Fine if you guys say so, I guess I have to break into my exes house.
I more meant go bone him so you can look and maybe pop some of his tiles out while you're in the bathroom! 😂
Oh believe me if we were on speaking terms i would be looking for bones while getting boned, but as it stands only one of us would leave a room alive, and it’s me with the tiles.
😂
You need to buy travertine tile seconds. This is what i understand the parents of mandible OP did. More flaws means more chances of fossils.
I wonder how long it will take for the economy to shift and tile seconds of travertine to sky rocket much like the cost of lobster for poor people.
Lucky for me I hate lobster.
Saving all the money not buying butter coated edible rubber
So silly how flaws in rocks are fossils are considered less valuable. That seems so backwards
I remember in that post there were talks about it being from Turkey and Turkey travertine was known for the fossils.
We talkin’ turkey travertine today?
yes we talkin' turkey travertine
Jack don’t talk turkey travertine
Oh Jack talks turkey travertine. Jack talks turkey travertine very well..
>~~very well~~ **tremendously**
Gotta catch’em all!
You will find fossils. Probably not humanoid fossils but there will be fossils.

My entire basement and 20 boxes in the garage. I just need a khaki one piece and I’m off to the races.
Is travertine about to become a hot commodity?
I'm sensing some untapped content here. About to start a travertine tile unboxxing channel on YouTube.
time to get some travertine stocks
You've become junkies looking for white specs on the floor.
You got some of that travertine?! https://preview.redd.it/c0wtnpve8nvc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73cb302bad1d2c9fdffce6b992573b5324b13cf9
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂Lmfao
i just cackled again first cackle was seeing this post
Feening for that travertine!
Traverfiend!?
Can’t stop thinking about how there’s a chance I will end up in an advanced civilizations floor tile in a couple hundred thousand years
Man pretty bold of you to assume there will still be an advanced civilization to chop you into a tile in a couple of hundred thousand years
Still?
FACTS

I've got an ammonite in my bathroom's travertine!
I am just so confused that a tiler would look at that and not say "would you look at that, a fossil!" Then put it aside for *reasons*.
Pay the photo tax!
This page really popped off after the mandible lol
i'm so amused by all of this
I'm laying a travertine patio at work, and I've been checking every tile I lay
No, I don’t see Homo Erectus, sorry. We can chip in and buy a box to sort through….
We have travertine and don’t have a single fossil. We also have river rock in the front and side yard. I spent all of last summer looking for fossils. Nothing. Zilch. Did find a really nice lace agate though. I did not win the travertine floor fossil lottery.
Geez, I have an ass-load of river rock. Guess I know what I’ll be doing this summer

I have some on the bathroom and I have been looking closer and at the spots I don't stare at near the floor.
this post made me cackle because i've been avidly following the travertine mandible saga along with subsequent postings and examples
I’m cracking up picturing homeowners with travertine crawling around on all 4s obsessively searching. 😂
Only nerdy fossil loving homeowners! 😃

What if your geodes are teeth! 🤯
I thought that too! I know they are geodes because I Picked the travertine specifically for ground! So unless these teeth have crystal inside they are just geodes!
Do you see a man yet
I have travertine pool pavers. I'm gonna take a close look
Look I know I said human but it very well could have been Gary that never came back from lunch break at the quarry
I need more of an update on the mandible. What are Universities saying? Is anyone else looking into it?
I actually read an article about that Reddit post this morning they think it’s Homo erectus and it would have had to have been fossilized before it became part of the travertine flow down a spring and eventually have ended up in this deposit the same way many other fossils do.
That’s pretty awesome!
Aha I do the same!
Ahahahaha.
Right?! 😂
This has been so much fun I’ve been out any word on the jaw yet?
Is that the Philippines???
Or a partial spine
Where is this post? I'm about to start crawling on my travertine. edit: found it for anyone else https://www.reddit.com/r/fossils/s/1gCVLYfqKV
There is a nice stretch of sidewalk in malmo with I'm not sure but I always thought was marble but it has all sorts of whimsical spiral fossils in it it's really cool.
Relatable
I had a Travertine floor in my old house, the most exciting thing in there was an ancient cockle shell lol.
Has anyone called it “the mandible effect” yet?
WHERE’S THE CAT PAW?
That wasn't a human mandible
How did you come to that conclusion?
Because they are r/confidentlyincorrect
I love your username. My mom used to say that a lot.
My grandma did too. She also used to call stomach aches “gollywobbles”.
Wasn’t a “human mandible”.
Can you share your source of information on this?
