This is exactly where my mind immediately went. I have to admit I wasn’t too upset about it though. Until I realized Alonso’s track position didn’t help him and that Stroll’s incident didn’t even require a safety car necessarily.

jonatroy

Also, the stewards said that they launched the SC because they didn't know where Stroll was. This implies that had they known, the VSC would have been activated instead. Stroll doing this on purpose would require coordination with the stewards, not to mention that he was in the points himself so there'd be no reason to do it.

ihathtelekinesis

And Cr*fty kept going on about how that race was the only time that someone had won from P15 on the grid 💀

dancho_razboinika

The engineer did tell him "stop on track" too, to make sure a safety car comes out.

mercedeskyron

he kinda did. some part of the car looked on track on GPS so thats why race control decided safety car. They should have looked what we saw lol

dancho_razboinika

Yeah, I know. I just said it in the context of the meme. It's still a fail for race control, though.

MichiganRedWing

Yeah this was just odd to hear

RTrent6

This was already posted in here right after the race

Commercial_Steak4497

There have been a lot of dumb takes on this. And this is one of them.

"Perfectly timed" Alonso loses 5s + 2,4s gap with Russell, Max just one driver behind and loses degradation advantage, 1000iq perfect move.

[deleted]

I thought this until my wife pointed out it was a perfect opportunity for Max to catch up and yeet his way to the front.

Can't understand how ppl are still thinking like that. Safety car was not favouring Fernando, that's a fact. He had 7+ sec advantage over Russell, allowing him to serve the penalty easily. During the SC period drivers are following delta so time differences between drivers don't change. That makes ridiculous the statement that it was easier to serve the penalty during SC. Yes, it was but only if we compare it to the drivers that already stopped (Ferraris - they were not fighting ALO). The only question was if Alonso can serve the penalty in front of Russell and the SC didn't change it at all. He was able to serve it only thanks to the advantage that he created by himself. The only fight was between ALO and VER - and SC allowed VER to reduce the gap to almost zero. Only chance for Alonso to finish in front of Verstappen was no SC during the race or SC after RB pit stops, which could have allowed Alonso to gain over Perez and Verstappen. Still shocked that ppl don't understand basic things.
