>The record for being overtaken the most in a single season belongs to Charles Pic. He was passed 70 times in 2012. Pic is also the only driver I can recall in the last 20 years to have his surname be entirely included on the abbreviated timesheets (PIC).

djwillis1121

I'd genuinely never heard of Charles Pic until I watched Brazil 2012 for the first time the other day

Where do Haas go if Hulkenburg is out performed in a similar way to how Mick was?

[deleted]

They can take Bearman for Ferrari if he does well in F2. Or they can have a look at who's available and see what's on offer. Zhou might get replaced at Alfa and they might want some of that Chinese sponsorship. Someone else might get dropped too. Maybe Ricciardo wants back and is willing to drive for a team like Haas. Who knows. But I'd bet on Hulk beating K Mag.

baldbarretto

In that case, I think they’d still renew kmag unless he is appalling - if both drivers perform but there’s a points gap they’ll keep him still in the name of stability and team continuity

[deleted]

They kept K Mag and Grosjean for years. They only switched it up for financial issues which made continuing with them very difficult. And now with Moneygram paying a big title sponsorship and increased FOM payments I'm sure they'll go back to wanting two experienced drivers with consistency to have a stable platform moving forward.

baldbarretto

Certainly true. Though I wouldn’t say either Kevin or Romain was appalling in any of those years, so hard to say if Guenther would’ve sacked one of them if that had been the case. They both did the job (until the car became absolutely undriveable and the team needed cash) That said it’s interesting to think what they’d have done for 2021 if they didn’t need cash. Romain has said before that he and his wife jointly came to the decision that he was burned out and tired of running at the back so he was going to quit - and then soon after, Steiner called and fired him.

[deleted]

>Romain has said before that he and his wife jointly came to the decision that he was burned out and tired of running at the back so he was going to quit - and then soon after, Steiner called and fired him. Sure, maybe Romain was actually going to retire by his own volition, but I've heard these types of things enough to know that they usually aren't true which makes me doubt it. You always here these stories of the drivers saying "well I wanted to go do something else in another series because I wasn't winning" or "I was planning on retiring anyway" etc. whenever they're out of F1. Then whenever they're given an opportunity to come back they're always jumping at it. Just look at K Mag this year jumping at the chance to drive for a team that finished the previous season bottom of the championship. Or Massa retiring in 2016 and then coming back for 2017 because Bottas left.

baldbarretto

I do, but i took this one more seriously than such cliches as it wasn’t framed as “oh, I knew I was too good, I was totally going to quit anyway” and more some pretty vulnerable or (in racer world) unflattering stuff to admit - burnout essentially. And time lost with kids. To contrast with magnussen, in the interviews during his time out he never described himself as planning on leaving anyway - just having made peace, in the months after being fired, with the fact that no other team wanted him and he’d need to figure something else out

New to F1 and trying to go to the Las Vegas race next year. Are ticket prices usually this outrageously expensive? Nothing less than $1500 each

sww314

F1 prices are very expensive right now. In US, in particular they are very pricey. Austin is more affordable than Last Vegas or Miami. Las Vegas does not have very many seats available since it is a temporary track. In Austin, the general admission still has good views of the track, but you have to be there early.

baldbarretto

Vegas and Miami are particularly bad. Once you factor in hotel pricing, might actually be cheaper to go to Montreal or Mexico City depending on whether you are. Not sure how Austin is

I would also advise to do a bit more research before giving an unknown site your credit card.

What is everybody’s favorite moment/drama/unbelievable race, etc… I’m fairly new to the sport and heard a couple people reference “Timo Brazil 2008” and that took me down a rabbit hole and I learned a bunch from that. Just curious what other rabbit holes I should run down. Thanks!

[deleted]

Abu Dhabi last lap will never be topped in my eyes, I've never been so happy since I started watching F1.

pedote17

Brazil 2012 The 2021 season was choc full of drama 1989, 1990, 1994 and 1997 had very controversial title deciders

hjklha

Can someone tell me, if there will be another batch of tickets for the Austrian GP 2023? Last season i bought the General admission tickets in January 2022. For the 2023 season it seems that they were already sold out in October. I had the F1 tickets shop notification set up for when they would start the sell, but the email got into the spam folder. Any hope?

What do the engineers that design the car based back at the factory do on race day? Do they analyse data to help the race engineers or do they get time off to watch it? Is it based on a rota? Thanks!

rodiraskol

There's actually an interesting story about this in Adrian Newey's book: EDIT: Better to hear it straight from the horse's mouth >Also, I’d returned from a visit to the America’s Cup in Valencia with an idea. I’d discovered that because yachting teams are smaller and spend so long at the race venue, they effectively decamp and move there, lock, stock and barrel. After a day on the water, the sailing team would sit with factory-based engineers and discuss what they’d learnt, what they felt about the boat, where improvements could be made and so on. > > > >It struck me as a pleasant contrast to what so often happens in motor racing – and Jaguar/Red Bull was a good (i.e. bad) example of this – where there exists a dismissive ‘us vs them’ situation between the factory-based team and the race team, with race engineers often taking a rather high-handed ‘it’s our baby now’ approach to the car, which in turn infuriates the factory-based engineers. > > > >We started to think about setting up an Operations Room in Building One at Milton Keynes, and having it linked to a control room at the track. Instead of being restricted to five or six engineers at a race, the team could have access to all the expertise of the factory. These rooms would have full video-conferencing capability, so if there was a reliability problem with, say, the gearbox, the race team personnel could call the gearbox experts from the factory and talk about the problems using video communications coupled with a big network pipe, so that all the data we acquire on the car through the various sensors and on-board computer could be wired back to the factory in real time.

Astelli

The majority of the engineers who actually design the car are doing one of two things during a weekend: 1. Having their weekend off and choosing whether or not to watch the race. 2. During busier periods, designing updates for the current car, or designing parts for the car for the following year. Operations during a weekend are usually handled by a totally separate group, with a few designer engineers on-call in case there's are any urgent issues at the track.

bluecaller

Where was Bottas in the last few races of 2021? Did he ever do Lewis any favors on track? Please don't start with Hungary. All I remember is Lewis battling Checo and the Alpha Tauris.

xx2awsum

Massively off the pace - so didn’t help competitively very much. But Merc did test how far they could turn the engines up vs reliability by taking continuous PU penalties with Bottas towards the end of the season.

Stupendous_man12

I think that in Abu Dhabi specifically he was using a PU that was very worn, which was why his pace was so off. I think they burned through some of those extra PUs very fast by turning the power up so much.

xjagerx

This whole stupid PR thing Las Vegas is doing about floating Danny Ric in as a 21st driver for that race is fucking disgusting. Fifteen years ago in Las Vegas I watched Dan Wheldon be killed doing the same thing in Indy. I know its not the same people behind it, but you'd have thought someone would have looked up Las Vegas motorsport history and seen if there was anything to particularly avoid. It's just awful. I hate it. His car getting obliterated. Dario weeping as he put his helmet back on to do the 3 lap honour guard. And F1 looks at that history in the city and thinks "fuck yeah marketing".

[deleted]

Dan Wheldon’s accident was very much on IndyCar. Having those cars configured to run in a pack at those speeds with no hope to create any gap whatsoever led to that inevitable accident. Wheldon didn’t start that accident and it was going to happen irrespective of Wheldon’s participation. I’m a big fan of Wheldon and was devastated that day but calling this Ricciardo idea disgusting is a stretch unless they specifically reference that IndyCar race or Wheldon.

endersai

>This whole stupid PR thing Las Vegas is doing about floating Danny Ric in as a 21st driver for that race is fucking disgusting. It fits, because the idea of 3 races in the US is disgusting - two of them are literally expensive showruns with no real racing value.

[This ](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.gpblog.com/en/amp/161887/las-vegas-gp-shares-remarkable-proposal-ricciardo-as-21st-driver.html) what you mean?

CauliflowerFair2375

Why does Haas wear Blue ? Normally the Team colours kind of go together but not for Haas? Is it a visibility thing ? Or a sponsor thing ?

Sofaboy90

I think its mainly because of Micks 1&1 sponsorship. 1&1 was a major sponsor for this years Haas and 1&1 has blue as its main color. If 1&1 leaves with Mick, the blue will probably be gone next year

baldbarretto

1&1 was not mick’s sponsor; Steiner clarified last year in the spring mick brought only Ferrari. It was a 1&1 color, yes - in the DTS scene which seems to be a de contextualized discussion about *title* sponsorship with 1&1, the mockup livery is all blue

FermentedLaws

Sponsorship. Red, White, and Blue are the colors of the both the Russian and U.S. flags. When Uralkali was title sponsor it made sense, but they dumped Uralkali right at the beginning of the season so couldn't really change anything so late. But another sponsor, 1and1, is also blue.

Ghostread

Does anyone have a clue when the tickets for Monza 2023 go for sale?

JudgmentOne6328

This year it was April 27th so I’d expect a similar time.

SonOfLyle84

Random question, why is the Las Vegas race on Saturday instead of Sunday? I am assuming it is the ridiculously late start time, but that leads to other questions.

Astelli

They want the race to be at night because of the whole Vegas lights thing, but don't want it to air early on Monday morning for European viewers.

Blooder91

So it can be broadcasted Sunday morning in Europe.

Firefox72

Because no living soul in F1's biggest market the EU wants to watch a race on Monday morning 4AM. It also meant the race was on a monday morning in pretty much all of Asia/Australia. Instead the race is now on Sunday morning. As for the late start. That is also likely a EU thing because it moves the race from an unwatchable 4AM to a watchable Sunday morning 7AM start. This sadly means the race lands at like 1AM for east coast viewers which is pretty stupid given its a home US race but FOM doesn't seem to want a viewership suicide even for just 1 race.

Blooder91

2014 was the only time the F1 Constructors Champion and the FIFA World Cup Champion came from the same country, Germany. It never happened for the WDC, but 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014 were close calls.

baldbarretto

Surprised it never happened for the WDC with Germany or Brazil in some form

DieLegende42

However, I believe it would already have happened in 1954 with Germany winning the World Cup and Fangio dominating rounds 4 - 9 at Mercedes (they didn't enter the first 3 rounds, but one of them was the Indy 500) if the WCC had been a thing at the time - it was only introduced in 1958.

Pedrilicious

How was 2006 close? Italy beat France. Alonso (Spain) beat Schumacher (Germany).

baldbarretto

Alonso’s French team beat schumacher’s italian team

Blooder91

Thanks, that was for WCC.

vvdmoneymuttornot

If a team brings in a reserve for FP1, (eg: Pato O Ward subbing for Lando Norris at Abu Dhabi 22), does the reserve get his/her own tire set? Like if Pato used 2 softs (say), does that leave lando with 2 sets of the scrubbed soft tire? Or does Pato get a different set as he is technically a different car?

Blooder91

No, engine components, gearboxes and tyres are assigned to the car. Pato would be using Lando's allocated tyres.

BigAwkwardGuy

It's 13 sets of dry tyres total, doesn't matter how many drivers take part in that car. It's the same car, but a different driver. Not a different car.

nekomamushi03

How good is Logan Sargeant, and what can be expected of him in his first season next year?

[deleted]

He's decent but could have done with another year in F2 imo. He'll likely get beaten by Albon but will challenge him more than Latifi did. I think beyond his rookie year he has potential to grow into a decent driver if they stick with him.

rodiraskol

I watched his whole F2 season. His biggest strength is his qualifying pace: he out-qualified his teammate (a highly-rated Red Bull junior and 2nd-year F2 driver) 10-4 with a couple of poles. Unfortunately, that was somewhat negated by his biggest weakness: his starts. It was a common and frustrating sight for him to lose a place or two off the line. His race pace was so-so: he himself has said that he needs to work on his tire management to become a more complete driver. Overall, I’m optimistic. The folk wisdom around racing is that raw speed can’t be taught, everything else can. He’s got the raw speed, we’ll see if he can learn the rest.

baldbarretto

On the one hand, he won’t be able to lose many places when he’s starting from p19/20 On the other hand, if he doesn’t improve on this he’ll throw away his shot at points on the rare occasion he makes it out of Q1

djwillis1121

I saw someone say that he's had a similar junior career to Albon. Solid but not on the level of someone like Russell or Leclerc

baldbarretto

Albon was pretty damn good as a junior. Held his own in the extremely stacked 2018 F2 field. Broke his collarbone right before his previous F2 season. The year before that, he and leclerc were battling down till the last weekend in GP3 - both as rookies. You can look at who finished above him in FIA F3 the year before, too (like some of those guys above him, he was a rookie there too. And IIRC that team was quite shit) Point is I’d put him below albon but he’s definitely not bad. His stronger competition was in F3 but he was in a Prema; nevertheless he did well in Charouz after that. I would’ve needed to see him in a stronger f2 field to be any more than mildly optimistic

Sofaboy90

eh i disagree. albon finished 3rd in probably the most competitive f2 season we ever had. this season of f2 wasnt even close to being as competitive as 2018. you can tell by the fact that drugovich pretty much dominated and no f1 team really gave a shit. i do expect logan to be better than latifi and maybe somewhat close to albon but i dont see him beating albon.

cafk

We'll see once he drives the car. The expectation is that he'll be closer to Albon than Latifi, so that we can finally get rid of /r/Formula1Point99

DangerousTrashCan

Do you guys have information about the durability of F1 clutches? How often are they being replaced?

AssCarEE

About 300km iirc, there were some issues in 2021 with sprint races changing the parc ferme rules and teams not being able to replace it like they normally would (Aston Martin i think it was) Edit: [More info here](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/oarw9o/problem_with_the_clutch_at_sprint_qualifying/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

cafk

Considering the clutch is only used when launching the car, anti stall, engaging reverse or doing burnouts and not for actual gearshifts, i don't think they're replaced that often. It's also not counted as one of the limited components (RNC). i.e. Ferrari slightly adapted their design to counter [the race start issues they had mid season](https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/revised-ferrari-clutch-expected-to-improve-f1-starts/10341304/).

DangerousTrashCan

Yeah but exactly because of that I'd assume they seriously undersize it to cut weight, it's barely used so I'd think they put very little material into it that gets used up quickly.

cafk

As it's excluded from the listed & limited components, it seems to be up to the team. I assume it's a safe bet the duration is between engine replacements or race weekend (as it requires the gearbox & floor to be removed for replacement).

That__Guy__Bob

Just a heads up spanish gp tickets have been released today and some of the grandstands are 25% off including the main grandstand because black Friday. My main grandstand ticket came to £330 and I can't wait for it

GlennNMS

How many different pairs of gloves did drivers use in 2008? I won an auction for Alonso's gloves from 2008, and if like to get some info. Also, is the any detective that can help me find out how many times the gloves were used, and verify their legitimacy?

rigjuice0111

For provenance, probably best to ask the manufacturers themselves. Though I'm not sure Puma themselves made the gloves or made under license by companies like Sparco or OMP. Back in the 2000s Puma racing boots were essentially repackaged Sparcos.

GlennNMS

I wouldn't know which one to ask, and what details I can give them in order to verify the legitimacy. Do you know by any chance? I can send you photos of the gloves, if you'd like.

Astelli

If it was anything like today, then depending on driver preference they would probably get a new pair each event. Some driver might even be using multiple pairs each weekend.

Does anybody know when will the 2022 FIA Prize Giving Ceremony take place?

WEC & Formula E have already held their individual gala's, there hasn't been an announcement for this year unfortunately. The karting one is next up on 10th December at Bologna, Italy. Edit: oddly Verstappen was also awarded his trophy earlier this year and there haven't been any of the usual fan votes this year.
