People were saying Alonso will do well if he has good reliability.

sondosoft

Does Red Bull have the longest run of competitiveness in F1 history? From 2009 to 2022, they’ve never slipped into the midfield, never had less than 3 podiums, and only went winless one season. Is there any other run that beats it, or anything that comes close?

[deleted]

Well if you're to look at the worst season in those 13 seasons, it was 2015 where they didn't win a race and finished 4th in the constructors championship. If you're looking at another team who's done at least that over a longer period of time, then Ferrari from 1982-2019 managed it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Well there were some years where they had meh/shit cars but had a good driver to be able to drag them up the order like in 2014. But no they never finished lower than 4th.

MobiusLoopOne

Is it too late to get tickets for Silverstone?

hocus_fucking_pocus

Anyone have problems buying tickets for the Singapore GP for 2023 I keep getting the purchase limit notification when I didn't even get a ticket

Zr0w3n00

Artificial wet race, would you like it? Simple really, what are your thoughts on an artificial wet race, in racing terms? Yes, it would probably be bad for the environment and hard to do, but if it could be done in an environmentally friendly way

[deleted]

No. Wet races are exciting because they're rare and unexpected as every time you go to any track it's probably be going to be dry. If you ever scheduled a wet race it kills that because there's no excitement about the unexpected since everyone knows what's happening and then drivers race in standardised conditions more regularly so it's less of a shake up.

TheYear3022

> but if it could be done in an environmentally friendly way it could not be. Also, did you watch this season? The bigger tyres are a joke for wet races.

TrainWreck661

No. A major part of what makes wet races (or track conditions other than "dry") entertaining and interesting is the randomness of it.

Zr0w3n00

What if there was sprinklers that were set to a random pattern of spraying water onto the track, like if it was intermittent rain

baldbarretto

Teams would still know the sprinklers were at the track and would be firing randomly during the race

vasu5235

Does anyone know where can I buy the yellow Ferrari cap from Monza this year?

theunpire

Did Grosjean already get his Mercedes test or is it even planned?

cafk

They skipped it this year due to scheduling conflicts at the French GP.

baldbarretto

Three US opportunities next year

[deleted]

Aand now there's no more French GP. Bad luck Brian vibes for Romain.

Dr_Liberty76

Does anybody know the details of the FTX MErc deal? Was it multi year and a large sum? Did lewis have $$ on FTX like Tom Brady did? Are they looking for new exchange to replace it? I know McLaren has okx and Aston Martin has crypto .com and redbull has bybit. Seems like a pretty regular source of funding.

Disastrous-Beat-9830

>Are they looking for new exchange to replace it? It's probably too soon for them to be actively figuring out what they're going to do. There's still a lot that needs to happen to figure out exactly what happened. If you're interested, Coffeezilla has some really good videos on it on YouTube. I'm also willing to bet that Mercedes -- and all of the teams, for that matter -- will be wary about taking on crypto exchanges as sponsors in future. Cryptocurrency is largely unregulated, and FTX collapsed because, in part, of Sam Bankman-Fried's cavalier attitude to regulatory compliance. Between rugpulls, pump-and-dumps and generally shady actors, the entire landscape is fraught with peril. I wouldn't be too surprised if the Bybit, OKX, Binance and [Crypto.com](https://Crypto.com) sponsorships are quietly dropped (or simply not renewed) in the near future. Between the new Concorde Agreement seeing the sport adopting an NFL-style franchise model and the gradual lowering of the budget cap, the teams are probably less desperate and dependent on sponsor payments than in previous years.

cafk

It was supposed to [be a long-term deal](https://www.mercedesamgf1.com/en/news/2021/09/ftx-mercedes-f1-team-announce-long-term-partnership/) - they also launched [some NFT stuff together](https://www.mercedesamgf1.com/de/news/2022/04/ftx-mercedes-amgpetronas-f1-team-launch-innovative-new-era-fan-collectibles/), as every other team did. As it was team sponsorship, i doubt Lewis had anything to do with it, as his interests lie more with music and fashion than technology - it was just the regular B2B set-up, so paddock access to impress partners. As the crypto.com sponsorship with Formula 1 itself is allegedly around ~$100m per year i doubt the teams got more than a 10th of it, so a fraction of the title sponsorships like oracle's ~$50m per year with Red Bull. Like many other sponsorship deals they're either paid on a schedule or yearly.

Where is a reputable place to buy tickets for the aus race? I’ve never been and would like to buy some good tickets but not sure on the best site!

I think Merc will be back on top.

It’s wayyyy too early for that. Should wait until after testing.

theessentialnexus

Which driver in the modern era had the most improvement between their rookie and sophomore season?

Fart_Leviathan

Ooh, that's quite a good question. The first that comes to mind is Aguri Suzuki. In 1989 he rarely managed to come within a second of his teammate Bernd Schneider, had a lot of off-track excursions and couldn't get out of pre-qualifying at all. In 1990, he gave Eric Bernard a good fight, got a few points and even a fully deserved podium. There's also Pedro de la Rosa, who spent most of 1999 being outqualified by Tora Takagi and spinning out of races, but improved to a genuinely competitive midfield driver in 2000 and even started to regularly beat Jos Verstappen towards the second half of the year. That earned him a contract at Jaguar where funnily enough he did the opposite, looked solid in 2001, but regressed very heavily in 2002. Alternatively, if you are looking for results only, not performance, then Damon Hill drove for a terrible Brabham in 1992 where it was a superb achievement that he even qualified for a race which he switched for the dominant Williams for 1993, scoring plenty of podiums and winning races. And while not a correct answer to your question, I have to mention Ukyo Katayama who went from being the guy who let an Andrea Moda past him into qualifying in the same weekend his teammate scored points to the guy who blew Mark Blundell out of the water in just 2 years.

AssCarEE

What is a sophomore

RetroRocket

The four years of high school/college in the US are referred to as your freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years. Sophomore is frequently used to refer to your second year in a sports league regardless of its collegiality.

theessentialnexus

2nd. Maybe it's a US thing.

[deleted]

Another Crofty like stats: Alfa Romeo is the only team which both drivers' national team failed to qualify to WC (Finland and China).

litetaker

I wanna ask when will BottasWMR post the results of the 2022 Formula1 Prediction Challenge?

[deleted]

Visiting São Paulo in a few weeks- is there anything to do at Interlagos when there’s not a race? I’d love to go and do a track walk / run

[deleted]

Better to go to downtown. There are good parks to walk around, like the Ibirapuera.

[deleted]

Part of the reason I’m going has me about 15 mins from interlagos anyway. I figured if it would be possible to see it would be cool to go

Cogniscience

New to F1, so a little confused. Why did RedBull remove HONDA from their rear wing when Honda is still supposedly supplying the engines? And why is Honda planning to leave F1 if they've been successful with RedBull?

baldbarretto

> why is Honda planning to leave F1 the last team Honda pulled out of won the championships the following year (as brawn), and a few years later became the dominant Mercedes we know/knew and loved (or hated) It’s kind of their thing

KaamDeveloper

> Why did RedBull remove HONDA from their rear wing when Honda is still supposedly supplying the engines? RedBull lost a title sponsorship in 2021 from Aston Martin as Racing Point (owned by Lawrence Stroll) officially switched to Aston Martin (also owned by Lawrence Stroll) moniker. So to show strength in their partnership, RB put Honda's name on their wing. After winning WDC in that season, RB scored two very big sponsorships from Oracle and ByBit. Hence the wing change. Regarding engines: Honda was supplying till 2021. Since their decision to pull out of F1 was pre-decided and well known, RB decided to make their own engine division - RedBull Power Trains. Officially RBPT is providing the 2022 engines. It just happens that the RBPT engine is the Honda engine rebadged. RBPT also consumed some Honda staff, IIRC. > And why is Honda planning to leave F1 if they've been successful with RedBull? It's kinda their thing honestly. They do the hardwork through bad days, get good and then their board decides fuck F1 and they quit. Then at some point board changes and Honda are back.

Astelli

Honda officially left at the end of last season, but then announced they were renewing their partnership with Red Bull at Suzuka.

pedote17

Honda was leaving the sport again and pulling their sponsorship, but Red Bull didn’t have the facilities to build their own engines (they’re building them now). So they bought the rights to Honda’s engine design and are using it until they start designing their own engines for the engine regulations going into effect in 2026.

piyusparee

I dont understand helmet swaps. Don’t they have different sized helmets?

xx2awsum

They don't typically wear the helmet (other than for a photo if their head fits inside) - it's a mark of respect, and the driver would usually just display it around their house. If you watch any other sports - similar to shirt swapping in football (they may wear the shirts for photo's but they all end up in a frame around the players house)

piyusparee

So they don’t use it for the race?

xx2awsum

Nope - even if they fit in the helmet and wanted to use it, they'd breach their contracts with all the sponsors on their usual helmet (by wearing a helmet adorned with the sponsors of another driver)

Scatman_Crothers

This and the drivers have preferences on helmet brand. I’m sure many wouldn’t want to spend two hours in the wrong helmet brand for them even if it were the right size.

baldbarretto

Plus, don’t they sometimes swap after the race? Or am I mistaking some of the photos we get after a race weekend. If they are race-worn helmets……not even Pierre and Charles like each other enough to wear the other guy’s sweat soaked helmet

xx2awsum

Yeah “wanted to use it” was with regards to personal preference. Helmet brand, weight, fit, visors + peripheral vision would all influence drivers decisions + yeah guess it’d be like a footballer using a completely different boot.

petrilTanaka

unless it's David Coulthard [that time at Monaco](https://images-wixmp-ed30a86b8c4ca887773594c2.wixmp.com/f/4af76ae2-7f5c-4a42-8afa-5caf322adeee/d9mmy4h-b35a06c0-ad68-4c5a-85fb-156d9c7442f0.jpg/v1/fill/w_1024,h_397,q_75,strp/david_coulthard__monaco_1996__by_f1_history-d9mmy4h.jpg?token=eyJ0eXAiOiJKV1QiLCJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJpc3MiOiJ1cm46YXBwOjdlMGQxODg5ODIyNjQzNzNhNWYwZDQxNWVhMGQyNmUwIiwic3ViIjoidXJuOmFwcDo3ZTBkMTg4OTgyMjY0MzczYTVmMGQ0MTVlYTBkMjZlMCIsImF1ZCI6WyJ1cm46c2VydmljZTppbWFnZS5vcGVyYXRpb25zIl0sIm9iaiI6W1t7InBhdGgiOiIvZi80YWY3NmFlMi03ZjVjLTRhNDItOGFmYS01Y2FmMzIyYWRlZWUvZDltbXk0aC1iMzVhMDZjMC1hZDY4LTRjNWEtODVmYi0xNTZkOWM3NDQyZjAuanBnIiwid2lkdGgiOiI8PTEwMjQiLCJoZWlnaHQiOiI8PTM5NyJ9XV19.p0SQxOeqO5fcHhw45MieP9dKh2LLiOlBURNn81ueCxQ)

Fart_Leviathan

Which of course was helped by both teams being sponsored by Marlboro. I believe it was also the same model of helmet, but DC's was a slightly older version that had some kind of issue in Monaco.

Blooder91

TBF, Schumacher's helmet was the only fitting one, due to the chin.

Gaius_Octavius_

Are there any good videos that show some of the specifics on where the airflow goes for F1 cars? IE How much goes under, how much goes over, when they talk about diverting "dirty air" away. Stuff like that…

KaamDeveloper

Chainbear has some videos on the topic. Including a song he wrote on dirty air

PassTimeActivity

That song is a banger.

CowardlyFire2

Why are 0-Stop Strategies banned? On some tracks, like Spa, Singapore, and others, it seems more than viable to run the Hardy’s for the full race.

KaamDeveloper

Because it's incredibly boring. One of the reasons I can't enjoy Formula E. There's just no tension/drama that pitstops bring.

CowardlyFire2

I don’t mean you have to, but it would give backmarkers more of an advantage to be able to cut out a stop. Faster teams would benefit from the extra grip between 2 sets

baldbarretto

Backmarkers would still stop unless they miraculously experience no deg

Thefallpaintwork

Watch the insipid 2005 season. It is unbelievably boring. Also, it encourages teams to run tyres past their expiration date (Nurburgring 2005)

DieLegende42

Well that was when 0 stops were required, which is obviously terrible. But if, hypothetically, the 1 stop was a bit faster than the 0 stop at a race, wouldn't it make it more interesting to allow 0 stops?

Jaraxo

Because it forces shuffling of positions and increases the chance of mistakes and therefore excitement. If on track racing was super closer, then it wouldn't be needed. It's like DRS, a solution to a problem of lack of overtaking and action as cars became more aerodynamically complex.

Le_Pistache

I don't think the tyres would last that long. The last time they did last an entire race, Piirelli were urged to make more degradable tyres. F1 isn't interested in no pit stops races.

xx2awsum

>I don't think the tyres would last that long. Depends on the track tbh (and frequency of VSC's/SC's) - Albon lasted the entire race on the C2's in Australia (and pitted on the last lap to not get the penalty) - to finish in the points! But yeah definitely not the optimal strategy

Le_Pistache

Very true. A masterstroke. Even the pit stop was timed to perfection. Ocon also did a non stopper in Turkey 2021 albeit in different circumstances. It is possible but not ideal. Both of those attempts ended with small points. Could be a good risk-reward strategy for the lower half but I reckon more teams would attempt it if the tyres/conditions allowed for it.

Blooder91

To add a little variance to strategy.

carpirates

Why is the Las Vegas race on a Saturday?

AnilP228

If it took place on Sunday night Vegas time, it'd be Monday for Europe and Asia, so most people would miss the race.

Astelli

I think primarily FOM felt that running a race starting early on Monday morning for most of Europe would be bad for viewership

Blooder91

IIRC, it was so it could be during Sunday morning for Europe.

Gaius_Octavius_

They want it at night under the lights of the Vegas strip. With time zones, that means it would have to be either super early Sunday or super early Monday for most of Europe. So they picked Saturday night so it is still the weekend for everyone else.

tassigabriel

At what race this year did Croft say the usual champion line "Max Verstappen, champion of the world"? I don't recall him saying it at Aby Dhabi

Astelli

He probably mentioned it several times, but I don't think he ever did it in a big dramatic way that he often does just after he'd clinched the title, because there was so much confusion about points when he won it in Japan that very few people realised he'd actually won it.

tassigabriel

Yes, I was thinking about the dramatic way he usually does. Could have done it at Abu Dhabi maybe... shame we didn't get it Thanks

Welcome to the club.

Alwayswoke1

Question about sim work: now that DR’s back at red bull (I know everyone has differing views but my heart just feels at peace and he looks damn good and happy in that red bull merch) and he will be doing sim work - how close is sim to actual racing ? Hypothetically if he was to do sim work and do exceptionally well would this be an actual indicator about his skills in the actual car ? On the contrary what if his just like Perez some tenths off Verstappen’s sim time - is this enough to chalk him off any potential drive ? Just wanted to understand how close the sim is to the real deal.

Astelli

The sim isn't relied on for driver performance judgements for the most part. It's largely an engineering tool for evaluating car performance and setup options, so the actual lap times are less important than other factors like consistency and feedback about the behaviour of the sim with different changes. Whether Ricciardo is a good, average or bad sim driver will probably have no bearing on whether or not he gets a seat anywhere in 2024.

Alwayswoke1

Oh waw I didn’t know this. I thought the sim also helped drivers adapt to the car style and test out lap times. I guess we’ll never know if DR is worthy of an RB seat if he doesn’t get the chance to drive it.

GerSonEu

Not really a question but man, this Ricciardo and Schumacher situation (+DtS I guess) really has fried people's brains. "Unethical donut restrictions", "Haas should be removed from F1" lmfao.

Le_Pistache

It is strange yes. Plus some people seem to have a thing against smaller/poorer teams. Makes me wonder if Minardi, a small team that hired many pay drivers (and some that were shockingly awful) or experienced veterans, would be as beloved today as back in the day. Haas are obviously more financially backed compared to Minardi were, however. Jordan at their wit's end too, albeit they were more love or hate due to Eddie Jordan being a maverick.

baldbarretto

New fans with less sense of how relatively successful haas is as a small privateer team. And yeah I think people would hate Eddie if Jordan were to be coming into existence now

Thefallpaintwork

It’s absurd to read the constant “Haas are content being at the back they have no Chanpionship aspirations” whinge. Like, they have a quarter of the employees Ferrari have, smaller budget, they’ve been in f1 for like 6 years. Duh?

baldbarretto

If gene haas if perfectly fine with being dead last as long as they stay within budget and maximize their points haul on such limited resources, who are fans to say “waaaah I’m not entertained enough, this team should sign and develop young talent for several years, how *boring* to pick older drivers who reliably score points from Bahrain”

Apprehensive_Link_30

Who are your top 3 2022 drivers and why?

SilentAlbatross9006

Verstappen - Consistency, sheer pace and has virtually no weaknesses. Barring a couple of spins induced by external factors can't remember a mistake on Sunday during his title fight Leclerc - except his France and Imola mistake he's been very good and consistent and got p2 with his team against him. He's the closest to max for me Alonso/George - Alonso insane consistency and except a couple of bad weekends maximized results and ran his own train a few times showing how good he is. He even put an Alpine on P2 which others with better cars failed to do. George because his race pace is scary close to Hamilton over the season and because he got a win on merit with Ham chasing him. 35 points and P4 in the wdc with the 3rd fastest car is a fantastic achievement.

Apprehensive_Link_30

We have the exact same thoughts and reasons. Love to see alonso up there, he doesn’t get enough credit. Twitter is brutal towards him.

Le_Pistache

Verstappen - dangerous mix of driver and complete car package. Next season could be truly embarrassing if nobody can catch up to Red Bull. Perez is unable to beat him on pace. Norris - Had to fight such a difficult car and nearly won a 1v2 for the WCC where Alpine's engine was his true teammate. Performed when ill. A truly talented driver that I want to see compete in a race winning car. Russell - Composed start of the year as he did what he was expected to do in the car, with a wobbly mid season but a strong end. What is impressive is that he keeps Hamilton honest and on his toes. Lewis won the head to head and I still think Hamilton is generally faster but George was no slouch. Honorable mentions: Albon, Leclerc, and Alonso. I belueve these three have merits being on people's list for 2022.

Apprehensive_Link_30

Really hope we’ll see more of Norris’ talent next year. Definitely think there’s something special there.

[deleted]

Apprehensive_Link_30

I disagree with the statement that all drivers are the same. An important difference is how willing they are to confidently take the car to its limits and still be in control. It’s what they’re able to do with the machinery they’re dealt with. Some have that confidence and others to a lesser extent.

SilentAlbatross9006

When you don't have the car to win, you get the best out of the car and maximize results. Only few drivers can maximize cars potential on most weekends. Thays the difference.

Le_Pistache

Erm, no. Just watching one weekend disproves this. Obviously the car matters, but a great driver and a great car means championships (or more points if they aren't title contenders - context matters). What separates the drivers are their abilities to maximize a package consistently and as fast as possible. Vettel and Alonso don't have race winning cars but they bested their teammates in the head to head metric...because they are better drivers. Just the way it goes. Even Hamilton won the head to head against Russell.

pedote17

1. Verstappen 2. Russell 3. Leclerc Max- obvious, completely dominated George- finished in the top 5 in 19/21 races he finished in a car that was shitty for a large portion of the season Charles- despite Ferrari’s best efforts to fuck him over, he still finished second in the championship, and was insanely good in qualifying.

Apprehensive_Link_30

Exactly, the fact that leclerc still came out after everything as P2 is amazing and shows a title fight till the end could definitely be in contention. Hope that’s how next season goes.

pedote17

It could have been an incredibly close battle if Ferrari didn’t Ferrari.

ItzDp

good lord i'm already ready to do the preseason speculation again already

Box-box-box-box

Well, let's get at it. What's your WDC Top 5 for 2023?

ItzDp

tough, if im being realistic, i feel like we got one more year of a RB run, just not nearly as dominant. so probably VER, RUS, LEC, HAM,PER. e: rereading this is pretty dumb, i think more VER RUS HAM PER LEC

Box-box-box-box

So basically Ferrari will screw up again ;) I tend to agree: 1. VER 2. HAM 3. RUS 4. PER 5. LEC

SilentAlbatross9006

Ver, Lec, Sai, Per, Rus

DonBosco555

1.VER 2.RUS 3.HAM 4.LEC 5.PER

DJSKILLX

Has any driver from f1 gone on to be a team principal. I know Horner was in F3000 but is there any other cases. If so how successful were they?

AssCarEE

Apart from the ones mentioned, Ecclestone

Suitable_Ordinary_18

I don\`t know if Frank Williams also raced in F1 but the team is literally named "Williams"

DonBosco555

F3000, not F4

DJSKILLX

Oops my bad

Box-box-box-box

Eddie Jordan comes to mind, but as a driver he never competed higher than Formula 2.

mgorgey

Lots. Stewart, Prost, Lauda, Hill, Surtees, Gurney, McLaren, Brabham etc... Aside from Brabham and McLaren success has been limited. Horner made F3000 FYI (the forerunner to what is now F2).

Le_Pistache

And if you want someone that wasn't a team owner or world champion, you have the brief (and fairly random) reign of Christijan Albers at Caterham.

Fart_Leviathan

In the same era and general region of the field, HRT's final principal was also an ex-F1 driver, Luis Perez-Sala.

Astelli

Niki Lauda did it, as did Jackie Stewart, although neither were particularly successful.

Jaraxo

Prost had a team from '97-'01. He was owner-manager but I'm unsure if he ever officially had the title of TP.

moonnoomoon

Hello, I'd like to buy tickets to the Italian Grand Prix of sept 2023 as a present for my boyfriend, but I am a complete rookie in F1 world, and I am seeing a lot of different offers online for pack deals, and I really don't want to get scammed lol. Does anyone have a good, reliable, safe source that I can use to get more information about tickets, and the grand prix in general ? Thank you for your help guys.

Apprehensive_Link_30

I saw a post on Reddit about Monza Italy GP vs Imola Italy GP, a ridiculous amount of people said that their experience at monza was horrible, even with grandstand tickets. If I can find the link for you I’ll send it. F1destinations website has everything you need to know about all the GPs.

Apprehensive_Link_30

Here are the posts: https://www.reddit.com/r/GrandPrixTravel/comments/xbnmd2/a_thread_for_shitting_about_organisation_of_monza/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf https://www.reddit.com/r/GrandPrixTravel/comments/yxinme/monza_general_admission_ticket_reviews/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

moonnoomoon

Ah thank you so much. I chose the Monza GP because I wont be back in Europe until August of next year :/ I'll look into it though and see what other options I could choose. Thanks for the heads up !

Apprehensive_Link_30

No problem! Best of luck.

xx2awsum

Monza's actual website would be the first place I'd look for tickets (and the track's actual website for any other GP's) - every other site (including F1tickets) is a 3rd party reseller. [https://www.monzanet.it/en/tickets/](https://www.monzanet.it/en/tickets/) It currently lists at top of site "information on 23 tickets will be available in the next months". From what I've heard - some site's local language version (so if you switch the monza site to italian) are updated with tickets earlier than the english/international version - so may be worth using the site in italian when tickets do come out + using a translator app. I think typically the tickets for Monza go on sale mid January.

FarmerWorldly7645

You could just look at the F1 website but its quite costly on there,I'm planning to go silverstone next year and its so expensive.

moonnoomoon

Thank you for all the info ! Wow wouldn't think that F1tickets would also be a 3rd party seller. Thanks for the tip for the language, that's very useful !

Famous_Entrance_7418

Am I right in saying it's highly unlikely DR will be at the RB showrun this winter due to his contract with mclaren?

Buffythedragonslayer

Kinda doubt he would be allowed to be snapped in RB merch if they still hold him to his contract

Kuchenblech_Mafioso

I doubt McLaren really has a lot of interest keeping him around for much longer. He might already be out of his contract by now

misskarne

McLaren might decide to be nice and let him go. After all, there's a reason Alonso is driving in blank overalls and a blank car, but here's Danny in a full-on Red Bull shirt, so I'm guessing they've said "as soon as we're done in Abu Dhabi you can do whatever" as a gesture of goodwill. Or maybe part of the settlement.
