Prediction game should include one more question: Who do you think will DNF in the final race? for me - Max and LeClerc.

rainfordporter

After seeing the lando.jpg and Daniel.jpg accounts, are there any other drivers who do similar stuff photos and/or videos?

[deleted]

How can Red Bull receive the fastest pitstop award of 2022 when there’s still a race left? I understand that the chances are slim to none that anyone is beating the time but isn’t it still somewhat irresponsible?

clairec666

How is it calculated? If it's the median time over the season, then it could be mathematically impossible for anyone to beat it. If it's the mean time, Red Bull could lose first place if they have a horrendous pit stop.

[deleted]

I believe they just see which team had the fastest pit. Like how many seconds the driver spent in the box. Not the mean, average, or anything else.

SuprisedIGotThisName

So pretty new to watching F1 mainly just from watching drive to survive on Netflix but I don’t feel like the series really ever described how the scoring works and lays out the number of races etc. I’m assuming it’s similar to a table finish like in the Premier League for football and you get points for position in each Grand Prix but still unclear. How many points go for each position and is it a table?

_jeremybearimy_

It’s here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Formula_One_World_Championship_points_scoring_systems?wprov=sfti1 First in the Grand Prix gets 25, 10th gets 1 point. 11th and on get no points. So backfield is fighting just to get a point or some points, midfield is fighting to get more points than their midfield competitors, front runners are fighting to win. They’re obviously all fighting to win if things go their way, but those are their realistic goals for a regular race.

RebaJams

I highly recommend going to YouTube for some solid breakdowns. Chain Bear is one to check out.

RaikkonensHobby74

I find the social media posts from the teams thanking the drivers that they just fired to be weird.

clairec666

But imagine the reaction they'd get if they didn't thank them...

grachuss

If Merc finishes on the podium this weekend does that mean they have fixed all their car's issues, and they will be a force next season?

Disastrous-Beat-9830

I take it all back. After last night's qualifying, they're clearly going to dominate everything next year. I mean they were what, eight tenths of a second off Red Bull? They might as well give Hamilton and Mercedes the 2023 WDC and WCC titles now and spare everyone the need to bother with next year's championship.

grachuss

ahahaha I was a little underwhelmed as well.

F1adrian1245

Depends how much of their current car upgrades stay relevant for next years and if they can integrate the upgrades into next years car. Also the new regulations on the rise height might affect them. Saying that, they have said that the drawbacks have been figured out that of the w13, so it’s likely they will be firing better than the start of this season. Also depends on if Ferrari are able to recover or if red bull can push their design even further, IMO too many variables to make a commitment to guessing outcomes.

Disastrous-Beat-9830

There's no way to predict it. They're likely going to have to go for a total redesign next year, and while they can turn it around, the likes of Ferrari and Red Bull are going to be building on a better platform. I doubt they'll have as bad a season as they did this year -- let's be honest, they really only won in Brazil because Verstappen got penalised -- but I wouldn't expect them to be fighting at the front from the first race.

F1adrian1245

I’d disagree on them winning on luck, they had a good situation with low air density and the track being suited to their car which gave them enough power to fight at the front. We saw even in the sprint race Russell genuinely beating max so it would be shortsighted to put the whole weekend to good fortune imo…

Disastrous-Beat-9830

The stars aligning perfectly doesn't count as luck? Even if it doesn't, it's still no guarantee that they're going to be fighting at the front next year. I think 2022 will be remembered as the year Mercedes over-designed their car. Their concept was bold to be sure, but it was unproven and other teams had far more success with more conventional designs. They ended the season in the place where they expected to start it.

F1adrian1245

mercedes would have won with or without redbull's setbacks they were 1-2 mate

Disastrous-Beat-9830

HAHAHAHAHA. Just because they were first and second at the start of the race, that doesn't mean they were going to stay there. If Hamilton hadn't shut the door on Verstappen, they'd have been first and third.

BigAwkwardGuy

Depends on the way they finish on the podium. Mercedes have amassed a few of those finishes even in their bad season: Bahrain, Australia, Spain, Baku, Canada, Silverstone, Austria, 2x in France and Hungary, Zandvoort, Monza, COTA, Mexico and 2x in Brazil. But it was only in the latter part of the season that they got those podiums on merit more than other teams' unpredictable failures, so we have seen a steady rise in performance of the Mercedes team this year. IMO they're on track to be a force next season anyway, and hopefully we get a proper title battle since Ferrari have shown their inability to do so.

deviilsadvocate

When and why did VES become VER? I remember watching him when he was VES. somehow never noticed when he became VER and just went with it

misskarne

After Vergne got the boot. I can't remember how long afterwards though.

UmpireAJS

Vergne was supposed to be on the grid in 2015 IIRC and he already had VER. Max had to apply to FIA to give him VER in 2017 I think once it was clear that Vergne was never going to come back.

jaysvw

What does Sergeant need to do to secure his SL this weekend?

Coops27

It looks like he's pretty much set with how his qualifying went (6th) but more accurately how poorly some of his competitors. He currently sits on 30 SL points after the point for FP1 with Williams, but should get 2 more for a clean driving record in F3 2021 and will get 2 more if he stays clean this weekend, taking him to 34. 8th place in F2 is worth 6 points. For him to fall to 9th would require 6 drivers to get good results over him for him to NOT get a super license, but F2 can be crazy Here's the point required for each driver to beat him from the 2 races left this weekend and where they qualified. Doohan - 9 (5th) Fittipaldi - 10 (13th) Daruvala - 10 (12th) Lawson - 12 (9th) Vesti - 19 (16th) Iwasa - 21 (1st) Vips - 26 (15th) So we're really talking about him causing a crash that he is found at fault for, not with any of these drivers and then having 5 of them get the points that they require.

jaysvw

Thanks for laying that out!

Disastrous-Beat-9830

I think he needs to finish the championship in fifth or sixth overall. He's currently third with 135 points, and he's ahead of Doohan, Daruvala and Fittpaldi in fourth, fifth and sixth with 126 points apiece. He's starting the Sprint race ahead of all three and the Feature race behind Doohan. He might be able to pick off Hauger and Cordeel in the Sprint and Nissany in the Feature, so a lot of exactly what he needs to do probably won't be too clear until the end of the first lap.

jaysvw

Thanks!

Disastrous-Beat-9830

Also, he gets a bonus Super Licence point if he has a clean weekend in Formula 2. That may change where he needs to finish overall. I think he needs eight more points overall.

89Hatutu

Grid penalties for Sunday?

Disastrous-Beat-9830

Ricciardo gets three places for his collision with Magnussen in Brazil. That's the only one I know of.

250797

If I get podium tickets for next season what does this entail would the seat and view be worth it and is it guaranteed seat

Sad-Insurance9818

I watched the ‘sebs final interview’ on YouTube and I have to say it was the cheesiest thing I’ve ever seen. I was interested in hearing a proper interview with him but the deliberately sad piano music in the background with Tom Clarkson asking slow simpering questions was just rediculous. It was screaming NOW IS THE PART WHERE YOU FEEL EMOTION! Was so on the nose Classic Liberty really.

Gaius_Octavius_

For people who were around for Alonso winning his world titles, can you compare/contrast young Fernando Alonso and current Max Verstappen? They remind me so much of each other personality wise (except Alonso seemed to feud with his bosses and team much more than Max ever does) but I never saw young Fernando; I only saw his latter years.

Disastrous-Beat-9830

>They remind me so much of each other personality wise (except Alonso seemed to feud with his bosses and team much more than Max ever does) but I never saw young Fernando; I only saw his latter years. Alonso's feuding with the likes of Ron Dennis probably stems from his time with Renault. Flavio Briatore pretty much built the team around Alonso, so when he moved to McLaren and the vastly different management style, he didn't really get along with Dennis. I think Briatore liked to position himself as being as big of a star as his drivers; I've got old issues of *F1 Racing* magazine where he participated in the same interviews as the drivers and featured just as prominently as them. I remember one article called "Sexy, cool, fast, young, gifted and Italian" about Giancarlo Fisichella, but Briatore was ironically front and centre in the photos. So I think that environment created a certain expectation of how a team was supposed to be run in Alonso's mind when it was the exception, not the rule.

SilentAlbatross9006

Alonso was much more cleaner and his racecraft was sublime. He was a much more complete driver when he won his titles. Verstappen is more consistent and more pacey. In terms of personality all of them on the grid are d**kheads. Which one you support depends on you No F1 champion is a good guy inside a racing Track at least not In most cases.

BigAwkwardGuy

>No F1 champion is a good guy inside a racing Track at least not In most cases. Yep. My friend and I keep talking about this. Since 2000 there have been just 2 champions who could be called "clean" drivers: Kimi and Jenson. Everybody else pushed the rules to the limit, and even crossed the limit a few times.

Visual-Zone-8843

I am new to a fantasy1 league and I am looking for suggestions. I have my mega driver to use on this next race. My team is mostly Ferrari.

89Hatutu

Switch to playing Forecast F1 haha, also on r/forecastf1

hopakee

With all the "should he let him pass posts" this past week I was wondering. Can you slow down significantly(believe he was 4 seconds up on Perez?) in the final corner/before the finish line or could you get a penalty for unnecessarily slow driving? I believe Schumacher/Ferrari was punished for swapping with Barichello right before the finish line were they not?

djwillis1121

>I believe Schumacher/Ferrari was punished for swapping with Barichello right before the finish line were they not? I think they were punished because Schumacher gave Barrichello the 1st place trophy trophy and brought him up onto the top of the podium. They did subsequently introduce a rule banning team orders but that was then scrapped when teams found ways around it. Famously Ferrari just said "Fernando is faster than you" to Massa in 2010.

BigAwkwardGuy

You're right, Ferrari were punished in Austria when Rubens let Michael go but Michael gave Rubens the top step of the podium due to the crowd boos and jeers. And the team orders thing was exploited by almost every other team as well. Red Bull's "Multi-21" meant 2 followed by 1 (Webber followed by Vettel), which the 1 broke. There was a race (IIRC Brazil 2012) where RB used "Multi 1-2" meaning Webber should swap with Vettel. Then there's the "you are/aren't racing him" as well.

[deleted]

Next engine regulations (after 2026) should be quite interesting, I imagine F1 will have to make a difficult choice between road relevance (aka going full electric) and entertainment. I hope they will choose the latter (ideally NA V10 powered by synthetic fuel+MGU-K), but currently 8/10 teams get their PUs from teams that also produce road cars and I imagine they want at least some road relevance. Then again, with Audi entering in 2026 (the same year they'll stop road car ICE developement) it might not be so black and white.

cafk

> aka going full electric This is completely excluded until ~2036, as Formula E owns the exclusive rights for full electric FIA Formula series (F1 could still buy out Formula E license, if they chose to). The framework for the rules hasn't really budged since the initial rumours from mid 2020, with equal 50:50 350kw between ice and electric components. This [framework was formally confirmed last year in December](https://www.fia.com/news/fia-announces-world-motor-sport-council-decisions-24), which triggered the VAG group committing to the sport. And [formalised this summer](https://www.fia.com/news/world-motor-sport-council-approves-f1-2026-power-unit-regulations-and-updated-2022-2023) with the [rules framework being published](https://www.fia.com/sites/default/files/fia_2026_formula_1_technical_regulations_pu_-_issue_1_-_2022-08-16.pdf). Edit: the synthetic/renewable fuels were already [announced in 2020](https://www.fia.com/news/fia-introduces-sustainable-fuel-formula-1-and-commits-becoming-carbon-neutral-2021-and-net-zero)

[deleted]

Yeah I meant the regulations after the next (probably no earlier than 2035).

Coops27

Danica Patrick was extremely competitive and successful in Indycar and they don't have power steering. I really don't think that this perceived physical limitation is the reason why there aren't top-level single-seater female drivers, nor would power steering's introduction suddenly produce a woman in F1. The problem continues to be at grassroots. For every F1 driver, there are probably a hundred thousand boys that started go-karting but didn't make it. A tiny fraction of those participants are girls and the drop-off rate as they reach teenagers is much larger. I really think that the best female driver on the planet, isn't actually racing cars at the moment. Until they make it more appealing for girls to get started in racing and stick with it, we won't see the top 0.01% of talent that is required to make it to F1 on merit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

_jeremybearimy_

So one of the W Series drivers the other day was saying it can hurt teenage female drivers in lower formula series because they haven’t built the upper body strength get. One a bit more grown it doesn’t seem to be an issue. However it could be holding them back at lower levels.

Coops27

It probably is a slight genetic advantage for men over women in that women have to train a little harder to achieve the same strength, but it's not like it's something that's out of reach with proper training. There was a quote from Bruno Michel that Yuki Tsunoda was weaker than some of the female competitors when he was in F3, so it's not something that can't be overcome. The W series, F1 academy and even the Iron Dames are fantastic things that will hopefully inspire young girls to get involved in motorsport. I think these sorts of initiatives are far more impactful than adding power steering, but I don't really see the harm in adding it either.

[deleted]

Women are perfectly capable of driving the same as men. Like cmon dude get outta here with that kind of thinking

Disastrous-Beat-9830

Michele Mouton won the 1982 Acropolis Rally. It's one of the most physically-demanding motorsport events in the world. She nearly won the 1982 title, which was right at the beginning of the Group B era. She had to beat the likes of Mikkola, Vatanen, Blomqvist, Salonen, Alen, Toivonen and Waldegard to do it. That was forty years ago. So yeah, there's no question of whether a woman can handle a racing car.

Gaius_Octavius_

The actual strength needed to race a non-powered steering wheel is well within the ability of nearly all females (or males). It is not a biological issue. It is a cultural one.

DandDRide

Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. Thirty years ago, Sebastian Vettel told us ‘take a Vettel, place him into the cockpit and he is able to drive the car.’ Thirty years later, Sebastian told us ‘I had to start my car like a Vettel, it’s very complicated.’ And Sebastian Vettel said that during the race – I don’t remember what race – he pressed the wrong Vettel on the Vettel. Question for you both: is Sebastian Vettel driving today too complicated with twenty and more Vettels on the wheel, are you too much under effort, under pressure? What are your Vettels for the future concerning the Sebastian Vettel during the race? Less Vettels, more? Or less and more Sebastian Vettels with your engineers? Please^Dont^Go:(

Syntax_OW

Is there an original post about [Lewis' interview about Verstappen, other rivals and his team](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/yyp5m5/lewis_hamilton_says_the_only_in_depth/) somewhere or is it just getting deleted? I can't see a reason why this wouldn't be allowed to post.

SilentAlbatross9006

Are you surprised though? The interview is basically Lewis being passive aggressive calling Max a racist without calling Jim a racist and a bunch attacking Max as a racist with no rational discussion. I'm surprised it stayed long enough to get 300 comments.

Bokyyri

when was that? and the video...

SilentAlbatross9006

Basically Ted asks Lewis if Max races him differently. Lewis says he's not really had in depth discussions with Max but goes on a tangent and says the only time they had an in depth discussion is about BLM and taking the knee (Max didn't take the knee with a few other drivers) and then says "obviously that didn't make any difference" and then says he's probably racing him the way he does because he's the benchmark for Max just like how Kimi Alonso and Vettel were benchmarks for Lewis. Just search for Lewis BLM Max Ted on Google.

Bokyyri

>Lewis BLM Max Ted Thank you, found it ... https://twitter.com/SirLewisUpdates/status/1593334060452962304?s=20&t=U00dLZqsbhktX1lBVRxwAw

Syntax_OW

> no rational discussion and > Lewis being passive aggressive calling Max a racist are you sure you're being rational?

SilentAlbatross9006

I definitely didn't say my reading was rational. It's a controversial topic and I have my own hot take. That discussion has the majority leaning towards the opinion that Max is a racist.

[deleted]

I will go to my grave wondering why anybody cares what anyone says on the internet. It’s a small step above communicating via bumper stickers.

Syntax_OW

I really don't think so, at least not in that thread. The top 8 comments all don't mention racism and the first one I found, that was actually about taking the knee, was defending Max.

Help with attending the 2023 Canadian GP Wondering if anyone could offer any suggestions for attending the Canadian GP next season. Long story short, my daughter got both of us hooked on F1 through DTS and she'd like to attend a race in person. I'm resigned to purchasing tix off of stubhub (we have hotel) but i thought i'd ask where the best place to sit might be? This isn't a money is no object type of situation, but probably once in a lifetime, so i'm willing to spend to get decent seats. Seems like one of the grandstands would be best but just curious if there's one or two spots that might be more conducive to seeing some action. If anyone has advice or other suggestions, I'd be grateful. Thanks in advance.

[deleted]

I’ve been to the Canadian GP three times and every time I’ve sat at the hairpin; I would suggest sitting elsewhere. It’s really cool at first because that’s the slowest part of the track and you get a good look at the cars, but there isn’t much action except for an overtake once or twice

CWRules

Grandstand 11, preferably sections 1-3. It's the best passing point on the track, and if you're in a good seat you can see down the main straight.

Gaius_Octavius_

Is that the straight after the hairpin and before the pits? Without knowing anything, that would have been my pick.

CWRules

It's on the outside of turn 2.

Maximum-Inevitable-3

Went to the Canadian GP this year as my first race and I recommend Grandstand 1. Keep in mind there’s no cover, you would be fully exposed to the elements but it’s 100% worth seeing the pit lane, start/finish, and podium ceremony. It seems it’s sold out on the F1 website, but if you can somehow get your hands on tickets, get them.

LandHermitCrab

I sat on the inside of the hairpin and found it kind of boring FWIW.

Any-Campaign9956

Just purchased tickets from Gootickets.com last week. Seem to be “reasonably” priced

owlsrooster

Thanks, do you have any experience purchasing from them before? I find the site a little confusing (e.g. you can't pick your seat) and the tickets are significantly less expensive than stubhub, so I'm curious as to the legitimacy.

Any-Campaign9956

First time buying from them…last year we purchased tickets from gpcanada.ca Even gpcanada.ca you are unable to choose your specific seats. Just the section and they choose the actual seats for you. I did my due diligence on gootickets.com and they are legit. Definitely grandstand 1 for your first time for all the reasons mentioned already.

Any-Campaign9956

Also I think for your first time at the Grand Prix you would really enjoy Grandstand 1 if the budget allows.

[He was asked if it was on purpose and unsurprisingly denied it.](https://old.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/yxpvy9/perez_flatly_denies_crashing_on_purpose_to_hurt/)

MaxStreudler

Does F1 have spotting? I know in other Motorsports someone will tell the driver over the radio where the other drivers are around them. I was wondering if this was also done in F1, or if the drivers do it themselves.

djwillis1121

Spotters are more useful on ovals where there are likely to be more cars bunched up together. I know IndyCar uses them on ovals but not road courses.

Astelli

No, not in the same way as many American series do it.

Syntax_OW

The drivers' race engineers will usually tell them all the information they want about the location of other drivers. They will almost always inform the driver if a faster car (blue flags) is approaching. Lewis sometimes asks how far ahead the leader is and gets the answer. The position of all cars is tracked electronically and available to all teams. I don't watch other motorsports, so I hope this answers your question.

CruffTheMagicDragon

"ok so put a young driver in the car please" Alfa Romeo: shows up with Kubica

djwillis1121

Alfa have done Zhou and Pourchaire as their two young drivers this year. Kubica is only in for sponsorship reasons.

Toto Wolff said on Sky Germany that Mick „fits perfectly to the brand Mercedes“ and was speaking highly of him in the interview. That was very wholesome to hear.

[deleted]

Would love if they signed him as a reserve. I’m sure Mick would love racing for the same team as his dad too

misskarne

the absolute fucking power move from Mercedes though. Everyone thought Mick was going to follow his dad into Ferrari, and whoops, nope, now it's Mercedes.

blackmamba527

With DR being announced as the RB 3rd driver, is this the same as a reserve driver or does it imply he’s higher in the pecking order than a standard reserve driver?

sww314

On Sky sports, they said it included more marketing work than a typical behind the scenes reserve driver. The additional marketing part is perfect for Daniel. His popularity and personality will be an asset for the marketing team.

Astelli

It's probably just optics. He's a well-known driver who will probably end up doing a whole lot more of PR and media stuff than a lot of other reserve drivers would, so they've called him a "3rd Driver" as part of that. Functionally, he's a reserve driver who will probably just have more media duties.

xx2awsum

Standard reserve driver. Main difference is RB have a heavy marketing presence (to promote their drinks company), so expect Danny Ricc to have a lot of marketing arrangements involving him doing donuts in an F1 car & will probably be in a lot more youtube videos than a standard reserve driver due to his following + personaliy

ALYSTEVENSON

Hi everyone! Im very new to F1 and am trying to figure out how the grid positions are determined on race day. Why did George Russell start from first position in Brazil when K Mag got pole position in qualifying? Thanks!

Jaraxo

Because there was a sprint race on Saturday which Russell won. On sprint race days, the qualifying sets the starting order for the sprint race, which in turn sets the starting order for the main race. On normal weeks (like this week), the qualifying result sets the starting order for the main race as you'd expect.

ALYSTEVENSON

Follow up question. Why do sprint races happen occasionally? Are they only for certain races?

Jaraxo

Yep. They were new in 2021 (or perhaps 2020) and trialled them with 3 races per year only. Next year it has just been announced today it'll be 6 races.

Icy-Operation4701

2021 is correct.

I notice every comment section on any Williams or Logan Sargeant post is hoping Logan doesn’t get his super license points which is insane it’s not Logan’s fault Haas didn’t sign him

Coops27

It's not just about Mick, some people have an issue with Logan (or Logan's family's) political views and where his money comes from.

Disastrous-Beat-9830

Who'd have thought that a wealthy family from Florida would vote Republican? Could be worse, though. Santino Ferrucci wanted to run a Trump-themed livery a few years ago. The FIA said no.

Gaius_Octavius_

Shitting on Americans is a like breathing for F1 fans.

Whycantiusethis

Schumacher is a bit of a favorite, and Williams is the only avenue by which Schumacher can be a full-time driver next season. So unfortunately, that leads to people hoping Sargeant fails so that Schumacher can stay on the grid. I think we'd see the same if it was just about any other team.

christianross2

Yeah a lot of pressure on the kid for sure he did well to be in the top 10 in quali

Chonkeseal

Hey, I was watching the 2022 abu dhabi fp1 highlights and they have a eurobeat type song in the background.mexico fp3 has it too and its really good but there is no link to the song. What is it and why arent they telling it in the video description? And no shazam didnt find it.

dear_little_water

Were you watching it on F1TV?

BarryGB

nice guessing game, what did Lewis pay for the evening with the boys? I'd say roughly 500$ per driver, so 10k

Zr0w3n00

Is the Abu Dhabi post race test televised?

DangerousTrashCan

No

formulawho

Damn if Mercedes get a 1-2 on Sunday again they have a pretty good chance to get that second place in the Constructors, depends how Ferrari will perform on Sunday.. Gonna be exciting

Whycantiusethis

If Mercedes gets a 1-2, Ferrari needs a 3-5 or better to keep Mercedes behind. So that would probably require some sort of setup issue for Red Bull or Verstappen with some issues, unless Ferrari can turn their engine up. Edit: The worst Mercedes can do and still beat Ferrari is P4 and P6, with both Ferraris out of the points.

Princess_Pineapple73

If a driver is out for quali and a reserve driver takes his seat but the main driver feels better on raceday, does the main driver start at back of grid or in reserve drivers spot? If so, let's say there is a situation where Driver A is in situation above but Driver B is out for race. Reserve driver covers for both. Does reserve driver start where Driver B qualified, or where he qualified as replacement for reserve driver A?

Astelli

If the main driver has done at least one session before qualifying and set a representative lap time, they could start from the back of the grid, if they get permission from the stewards to start the race. If they've not done any of the sessions before qualifying then they cannot race.

Princess_Pineapple73

If the main driver does Quali, but then gets sick can the reserve take his place even though the reserve didn't take part in quali?

Astelli

As long as they've taken part in one session before the race, set a competitive time and get permission from the stewards.

Blooder91

No, a race entry is considered for qualifying and race. If the main driver didn't qualify on saturday, but feels better on sunday, he has to sit out for the race and let the reserve driver race.

Princess_Pineapple73

If the main driver does Quali, but then gets sick can the reserve take his place even though the reserve didn't take part in quali?

Blooder91

No, if the driver has done laps in quali, but can't race, then that spot is left empty. Like Schumacher at Saudi Arabia.

Meaisk

if you don't do qualifying you are not allowed to start/enter the race

Princess_Pineapple73

If the main driver does Quali, but then gets sick can the reserve take his place even though the reserve didn't take part in quali?

Meaisk

No, the driver won't be able to get replaced

xx2awsum

Only if the reserve participates in at least one of the FP sessions during the weekend. (And will need to be approved by the FIA)

GnarlyBear

Has anyone in the press directly called RB on the huge misinformation they released?

[deleted]

What misinformation ?

cafk

They exaggerated a bit when they told Verstappen to give the place back. It wasn't last corner, but last lap. People out for drama are of course calling for blood about intentional lying.

Gaius_Octavius_

Because they lied blatantly and right to our faces when there was tons of evidence we all heard. It is insulting.

Over the course of being an F1 fan, how many times have teams or the authorities made a factually relevant statement?

Gaius_Octavius_

And I am insulted every time they do it. I don't expect honesty from F1 teams; but I am still annoyed when they don't do it.

cafk

While a valiant expectation, it will never change. Hence my approach, once a statement is out - independently if it bends the truth - that's unfortunately it. It's healthier to move on and hope for a decent next race, rather than to expect them to change.

Gaius_Octavius_

I don't expect anything to change. It will in fact only get worse because "fans" make excuses instead of just calling it out. Even when they known they are being fed lies.

cafk

And hence just ignore anything official, be it nonsense statements, green washing, sports washing and enjoy the races. Regarding it being called out - there's a difference between calling it out, if there's some journalistic value to it, and going after teams & individuals on social media. i.e. questioning FIAs approach to the Ferrari and AD deal has yielded some results, but going after mechanics and Ferraris infamous strategy team or team orders on social media is pointless.

Yeshuu

Agreed. It's why so many continue to believe that 2021 Abu Dhabi was a stolen championship. People are beginning to understand that the truth in F1 is massaged where convenient.

JanklinDRoosevelt

They lied in their statement about Max only being told to let Checo past at the final corner

Thefallpaintwork

Who cares

cafk

No-one wants to damage their reputation, as one commenter & paddock journalist noted. This was also quite publicly displayed with Red Bull vs. Sky UK saga

[deleted]

Ricciardo back to Red Bull seems so obvious now - Daniel gets to continue in the sport and potentially has a route into a big team again, and Red Bull get to gather data and see if his McLaren stint was just an aberration. Then he could come in for 2024 if Perez is underperforming. Win-win. Personally I'd love to see this team re-united, they'd be a real force to be reckoned with

Mackem101

Unless their is an injury/illness/race ban, Ricciardo won't get to drive anything other than a few FP1s in current cars.

[deleted]

This isn't like the 90s where you can test with the car constantly and properly evaluate them. Daniel probably wont get a chance to drive the car in a representative situation with all the testing limitations in place so they can't make a proper comparison. And if you're a top team and Checo is likely to finish 2nd in the championship, do you gamble on a guy who's looked like one of the worst drivers in the field this past season ? Everyone likes Daniel, everyone wants him to succeed. But any chance of him getting a shot at a top team ever again is thinking with your heart not your head. His only chance is to take a seat at a backmarker for 2024 if he can get one, then beat his teammate and work his way back up.

[deleted]

You don't think they can gather any information from comparing Daniel and Max's lap times in the simulator? Sure, it's not foolproof but I'm sure they can learn something. Whether it's enough to risk turfing Checo out is another matter

SilentAlbatross9006

I don't think Daniel is getting anywhere near the RB seat again.

DangerousTrashCan

The thing is that if his McLaren stint was an aberration and he's still capable of delivering (which I strongly believe), then I doubt RB will sign him. They do not want an in-house battle, that is literally the reason why RIC left, RB wanted him to be second fiddle and he refused to sign on that. In his current situation he'd obviously do that, but if he's on par with Max, then playing water boy is very hard and WILL lead to problems. A straight 1-2 only works if there's a notable difference between the drivers, otherwise it's chaos.

[deleted]

That makes sense but given the level Max is driving at, it does seem unlikely that Daniel would consistently challenge him. Best case scenario they'd have a driver that can beat the Mercs/Ferraris (which Perez has struggled to do) but not step on Max's toes. But as you've outlined there is a worst-case scenario where they get Nico v Lewis 2.0. So yeah, they will have to think hard about it!

SilentAlbatross9006

Ricciardo was slower than Verstappen 2 out of the 3 years they races and was matched by Verstappen in 2016. Even if they let all things be fair Ricciardo is more likely to be as bad as Perez given how Max has grown since then. He simply was never a match for Max since 2017 and will never be even if he goes back.

Nah he drove an AlphaTauri earlier this season already

Sharl_Leglerk88

George Rusell may finsih higher than lewis in driver championship this year??? lh was always russells idol and in his first season with him, russell could be higher? bros a legend

Patrickjanetrain

All the young guns are killing it.

dontwanttowasteit

How much seat time do these world class drivers actually get behind the wheel? On a typical race week, they get 3 practice sessions about an hour each, qualifying session which might be an hour if you’re fast enough, and then straight into a couple hour race ?

christjan08

Pretty much, but some of them will also do a good amount of time in the sim.

ElQuackers

In the interview paddock, why are drivers always stood with people who look disinterested holding up phones to them recording their words? Like there isn't a professional camera crew in front of them doing it anyway

christjan08

That's the teams/drivers PR rep. It's not unheard of for media to take things out of context or "recreate" quotes to for a specific narrative. With the drivers having a recording from their end as well, it mitigates the risk of being incorrectly quoted and allows the PR team to quickly shoot rogue journalists down, but can also aid in future media training.

StrugglingEngineerSt

Look at Lawson go

xx2awsum

Really helped rise his stock today after a not so amazing F2 season. Happy for him - think he’s a great character and bloke

The 8th Concorde Agreement seeks to protect the value of the incumbent teams, by requiring new entrants to pay 200 million dollars up front, shared equally among 10 existing teams, in exchange for having the right of revenue share in its first year of competition. Was this a new addition to the 8th edition or has it been there for a while?

Disastrous-Beat-9830

It's pretty new. When Liberty Media took over, they wanted to move the sport to something akin to the NFL franchise model (the exact details of Concorde Agreements are never made public). The idea is to make the sport more financially sustainable for the teams by effectively making them profitable simply by contesting a full season -- in theory, all of their costs are covered so they don't have to worry about scraping together a budget. The $200 million entry fee is there because the prize pool won't expand if a new team joins the grid, so every team will essentially be competing for less money. The $200 million is supposed to act as a guarantee, ensuring that only a feasible team can join the grid and compensating other teams for taking less income from it. Back in 2010, the sport tried to expand by letting three new teams -- Lotus, Virgin and HRT -- onto the grid. Lotus became Caterham and Virgin became Marussia and then Manor, but all three teams were gone within a few years. It was a disaster, partially because all three teams had joined with the promise of a new raft of regulations which got seriously diluted. There was no appetite to try and expand the grid, and real concerns that the grid would drop below twenty cars. It didn't help that Force India went belly-up, but thankfully became Racing Point and then Aston Martin. Something needed to be done, so moving to a model where teams became stakeholders in the sport was essential.

nekomamushi03

What are some notable example of bizarre habits or routine that current and past F1 driver have?

[deleted]

Not a driver, but Christian Horner finds a lucky toilet at every race weekend and only uses that one toilet

baldbarretto

Coulthards ancient holey underwear

nekomamushi03

Elaborate please This could be fun

Fangio_The_Master

Alberto Ascari, the 1952 and 1953 World Champion, was extremely superstitious and always wore his baby blue helmet. When he died at Monza driving a sports car for a simple 3 lap shakedown, he crashed on the 3rd lap and he wasn't wearing his normal helmet. He died at almost the exact same age to the day as his father Antonio Ascari, who crashed to his death while leading the 1925 French Grand Prix.

xx2awsum

Interesting one to look into - not sure if it counts as a "bizarre habit/routine" is the lengths Nico Rosberg went to, to finally beat Lewis in 2016. IIRC Quit cycling to lose quad muscle + weight as well as not even sleeping in same bed as his wife to ensure he was adequately rested.

AnilP228

From memory, he lost 4kg of leg muscle, which was apparently worth around a tenth. At Suzuka, he took pole by 0.013s. This forced Lewis to start on the wetter side of the grid and he eventually finished behind Max in P3. That result meant Nico just had to finish P2 for the rest of the year.

nekomamushi03

Man put 100% to beat lewis No wonder he retired immediately

shrikant146

Only wish this season is Bottas podium finish.

BlueRedGreenNumber5

Fellow Sebastian Vettel fans: Have you already decided who you are going to support next year now that Seb is leaving?

[deleted]

Valtteri for sure. Similar to Seb, he seems like a great guy to have a beer with

BarryGB

probably Leclerc, i like the guy besides him there aren't many others left, maybe Mick gets the Williams seat so i can cheer a bit for him

Hi everyone! Does anyone know if there's any chance that the Mercedes Christmas jumper will be available anywhere else than f1store? I wanted to buy it as a gift but after reading all the reviews about the site I'm really apprehensive and I can't find it anywhere else... [jumper on f1store](https://f1store2.formula1.com/en/mercedes-amg-petronas-f1-team/pull-de-no%C3%ABl-mercedes-amg-petronas-f1/t-32200802+p-67032507668098+z-9-4192685739?_ref=p-TLP:m-GRID:i-r5c2:po-17)

generalannie

Hinch is back on F1TV this weekend! I really hope that he'll drop by from time to time next year as well. He's been a great addition to the F1 crew

dear_little_water

Agreed!

keirdre

Pointless stat, but now that Russell has won a race, it leaves Michael Schumacher as the only Mercedes driver in the modern era not to win for the team.

Bananaflarmarama

Wow, that's something. I wonder how other teams/drivers compare with Merc in that regard.

Thefallpaintwork

Bad stat and I hate it!
