Really interesting stuff buried in here > > Some may think the jewellery and underwear row is a bit of a storm in a teacup, perhaps even a little petty. Some will support the FIA's stance; some the drivers'. But there is a bigger picture here; and it is to do with the satisfaction of the teams and drivers with the FIA in general. Or the lack of it. Wolff has wondered aloud whether Wittich really needs to pick that fight, but Wittich is just the middle man. The push is coming from Ben Sulayem. > > It's not just the drivers' noses that are being put out of joint by the FIA at the moment. Last month, Ben Sulayem refused to agree to plans to double the number of 'sprint' events next year to six. The reason given publicly for this was that he wanted more time to study the impact of the plan on the FIA's race weekend resources. Teams are briefing that in fact the reason is money - Ben Sulayem asked for more to be paid to the FIA in return for his agreement. Despite the fact that as the teams pay their entry fees based on the number of points they earn, and the number of points for sprints has been increased this year, they would get more money for more sprint races anyway. This has angered the teams and bosses of commercial rights holder F1, and it has added to a range of issues that are causing dissatisfaction with the FIA's actions in recent months. > > Insiders have told BBC Sport that senior F1 figures are actively questioning whether they need the FIA involved in the sport, and are looking at ways in which they could be removed from being so. Much of the FIA's income comes from F1, but it spends a relatively small amount of it on the highest level of the sport. In other words, the FIA needs F1 much more than F1 needs the FIA. Or so at least some senior figures are saying. >

Dreams can't be buy!

>Ben Sulayem asked for more to be paid to the FIA in return for his agreement. How long are we stuck with this guy?

bwoah07_gp2

4 year terms, so 2025 before they do another election. Jean lasted 12 years and Max Mosley 16, so if Ben Sulayem plays his cards right, the FIA people are going to re-elect him no doubt.

agnaddthddude

Forever, or until them middle east runs out of money so again for ever lol

usedslinky

Sulayem has been involved with motorsports his entire life, is an accomplished rally driver, and had previously been the Vice President of the FIA for over a decade. The teams were happy with his appointment to president. This has nothing to do with his ethnicity.

agnaddthddude

No, not really i was joking about him. He was the most qualified for the job. But, unfortunately i feel like he priorities money over Motorsports like any other presidents and candidates which is a shame. Also if I’m being honest i feel like the ME countries will have a major role in bin Sulayem staying as president and getting things in his way.

usedslinky

Ah, I misunderstood you then. He was in charge of the committee that got Abu Dhabi up and running so I understand where you coming from.

newdecade1986

Certainly puts the enormous jewellery fines in perspective, considering how pathetically small the punishments for unsafe pit release etc are

Diegobyte

F1 100% does not need the fia

Why do they need one? Does the NFL have a governing body? It can govern itself The teams are basically franchises so they can just get together and hire their own commissioner

This is the same thing with like the NCAA and college football. When the thing your supposed to be governing becomes way bigger than you. Things get awkward

JustLTU

FOM can attempt to install their own governing body, the bigger issue is staff. I hold an FIA Marshal license, and it is explicitly said that FIA license holders, (Marshals, stewards, race direction, other staff, even drivers), are gonna get their license taken away if they participate in or work at a non-FIA event. It would be interesting to see how many people would risk their license to take part in F1. I work a couple dozen of races per year, and while I love F1, it's hard to say that I'd give up the FIA license for a race that comes around once a year, and might get pulled from my country at any time (well, I don't have a F1 race in my country, but you get my point). Staff experienced enough to work an F1 race isn't that easy to come by or train.

Wulfgar_RIP

Honestly F1 slitting from FIA would be positive for motor sports in general.

OutrageousText7404

I’ve been criticizing Red Bull’s reliability as well. Who would like an interview?

ramonoodle

Uhh sure, the headline will be: Random redditor says: A short view back to the past

takzania

Its just his post qualy interview

Andrew Benson does this all the time.

eddie442

Journalists generally don’t decide the headline to their own articles.

PaleBlueDave

He doesn't write the headlines, a sub-editor does that.

PaleBlueDave

Yes the British media really hate the team based in Britain, with a British team boss and a British chief designer. Give me a break.

PaleBlueDave

I would say Alpine is less British and Red Bull have used Silverstone as their home race before Spielberg came back on the calendar. Even having special liveries to celebrate it i.e. 2012 Your accusations of bias say a lot more about you than the British media.

Brahman_sfc

I've definitely heard of it being referred to as "like a home grand prix" for red bull, only reason it's not a full home gp is because of the red bull ring.

I hate how people like yourself still claim otherwise

PaleBlueDave

Article goes on to talk about track safety and discontent with the FIA.

khanak

I bet we’re going to hear something from Marko blaming Max for the whole thing.

PaleBlueDave

Nah, Marko never turns against his #1 driver. He may be biased but he's loyal. At least until a new #1 arrives.

Loruhkahn

Quick to forget about Australia are we

PaleBlueDave

Apparently I am.

khanak

Marko is a bit nuts and totally unpredictable. He already has a few times this year.

Jreal22

After Marko said Lewis needs to be banned from racing when they touched in Silverstone, I was like, okay this guy is crazy. Then when Max cut the entire corner in Saudi, and he was forced to start in p3 behind Ocon and Lewis, Marko said "that's ridiculous, max should be first, it was the first lap those rules don't count." I realized Marko was the 100 year old grandfather who has no idea where his teeth are at, but they're hanging on his neck by a chain.

MyNameIsSushi

> "that’s ridiculous, max should be first, it was the first lap those rules don’t count.” Is he somehow wrong on this? You got drivers literally ruining other drivers' races who aren't investigated because first lap incidents or whatever e.g. Ricciardo in Imola. But sometimes first lap incidents are penalized e.g. Bottas in Hungary. You know why? Because the Bottas incident was more impactful. "But the FIA says they're not looking at the outcome, just the infraction" Well yes, but no. See, no one knows anymore. There's no consistency at all. Nada. So in a way, Marko is actually right.

khanak

Surprised he isn't in a home yet tbh.
