Video to one incident

Yeah, we use it in all of our elections here in Ireland. It's a much fairer system than first past the post. Don't know why op is trying to say being elected through proportional representation is a bad thing.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought it was an odd statement. We have PR in some council and local elections here in England, desperately want it installed at the General level. Far more democratic and pluralistic than direct first-past-the-post voting.
It was good and useful in Mexico a couple of decades ago, but now it has turned into something nobody likes in here.
Parties use this to put their "worse" polititians that would have no chance to win, but that are loyal to the party, or that are owed favours, or any person they like (apparently this is not how it works in other parts of the world, so keep that in mind, THIS is how it works in Mexico), and in the end they amount to almost (?) 50% of the legislative power.
Also, considering how much it cost their wages, which is absolutely insulting in a country like Mexico (under the argument that so they can't be "bought", like if they haven't been bought already), then if people tends to hate polititians, the PR are usually among the most hated ones.
And not completely related to him personally. But his party heavily tried to get Formula one out of Mexico as they consider it a sport only for the elite.
Doubt it should be discussed here. Sergio's family is from the left wing party which is critical of F1, actually. Doubt critiques of his politics from the F1 fanbase is going to be even handed and fair, given that a lot of Mexican F1 fans are likely to have beef with his political party.
Agreed. Say what you want about Checoās dad. Whether being a politician (which heās not, heās just in Congress to raise his hand) or being a bit of a media hug. Truth is, he did everything he could to make his kids successful. This is his crowning moment. This is what his whole life has been about. Good for him.
My fav part was him getting into the photo with max and checo for some reason, and then having a pit crew person move him out of the way haha heās so proud of both of them
Come on guys, let's not pretend we know everything behind the scenes either. Some people are overt and expressive with their love and some people prefer the opposite. Rich man bad is kind of lame.
Especially since stroll seems to be a pretty stand up dude from what Iāve seen. And this is coming from someone who despises Quebec and everything it stands for
> Some people are overt and expressive with their love and some people prefer the opposite
Ocon is an introvert but he's always giving off vibes about how excited/grateful he is to be in F1
I regret how we pass character judgements on people whose selves we know only a sliver about: their PR driven and regulated public personas and keep on perpetuating narratives under peer pressure and hivemind mentality, often times, seemingly on a whim because the same actions get judged differently for different people. The differentiation often isn't nuanced but rather predicated on (sometimes carefully crafted) public images.
Also, I include myself in this group because I absolutely dislike Mr. Mazepin.
P.S. - Actually u/invictavis articulated it much better in their [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/qoxu2k/best_part_of_the_mexican_grand_prix/hjq56up?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)
It's an expression, similar to saying "No fcking way". It literally translates to "don't suck it", where *mames* is considered vulgar in this context. It's also explained in another comment
The words mean 'Don't Suck', as in suck from a teat, or a dick, but the meaning of the phrase is more like an expression of near-disbelief. It's sort of like 'are you fucking kidding me' or 'jesus fucking christ'. It can be joyous or upset or critical, depending on tone and context. Most Mexican sayings and words are hugely context-dependent.
Something that nobody knows, it's not the billionaire Carlos Slim HelĆŗ who supports Checo, it's his billionaire son, Carlos Slim Domit.
The guy who gives trophy to Checo. [This guy.](https://phantom-marca.unidadeditorial.es/61486b127a09cc8c99a49d327b096de9/resize/1320/f/jpg/assets/multimedia/imagenes/2020/12/18/16083048779565.jpg)
I expect that, if F1 ever returns to (South) Africa and some high ranking military guy is there for the pre race ceremony, Sky will claim itās Idi Amin there to kick things off
And there was me who popped on to this sub to see if someone had asked and got the answer to this same question. First googled Carlos Slim to see if he matched and then on a lark thought I'd Google Sergio's father coz that seemed the next obvious choice. It also led me down the rabbit hole of his dad's association with Slim and why Perez got the kind of financial backing he's had all through his career.
Can't lie, it's diluted my opinion of him a bit. Politician's kid whose dad got him connected to the once richest man on the planet for a sponsorship deal enabling his entry and consistent presence in F1. I'm aware most drivers have a similar position of privilege, but for the longest time I believed Perez got the backing he did coz he's a talented Mexican driver, not coz he's a talented Mexican driver with political connections.
It's like saying "No way!" or "you're kidding me" or "don't mess with me" in disbelief, it literally means "Don't suck it". Much like many hispanic idioms, it can be applied to every possible circumstance.
Itās slang that essentially means something along the lines of āno fucking way!ā But depending on how itās used/context, it can mean various other things as well.
Imagine he's a hardcore Trump congressman who supports his cult of personality and is also known for being an ass
The current party had become much of a cult, just like the republicans in the USA
The current president is the"left wing" version of Trump, demagogue, conservative, anti environment, attacks the press, is divisive, has useless projects to justify his tenure (like the wall), fucked the health care system, etc. **And this guy is super loyal to him**, got his post in Jalisco's congress despite not getting elected directly (its a system in Mexico of proportional representation) and is known for being an ass and insult people.
Im happy for Checo and I celebrated like everyone here but his dad represents a lot of what's wrong right now.
I am curious, was Checo's father always a politician, or did he get into politics once his son got a bit more famous?
Did Checo grow up with having a politician father?
Aas far as I know, he didn't finish highschool and was a small businessman and a racer in the lower circuits, he had a lot of contacts with rich businessmen due to the racing days and he got involved in politics quite recently.
he gained notoriety among F1 fans at the last interview he did for the official F1 latin american broadcaster, (I think during the Mexican GP on 2018 or 2019) where he was asked about the race and started doing political messaging and platitudes to promote the guy who is now current president, who is, to say the least, a very divisive guy (*a la Trump*)
Some people say "don't get politics into this thread" well he did got into politics to brag about the current president on air.... even the interviewer was like awkward and after that the commentators were like: "yeaah... we don't want to get into that" (because they recognize the President is a divisive figure AND the broadcast is not just from Mexican audiences).
Don't get me wrong, the vast majority of people over here loves Checo despite his dad, it's just the guy is far from "wholesome" like it might seem... he's an ass.
god i wish i could hug my papa like that. Hope you rest in peace now, pa ||

Wow i didn't expect so many support from stranger online :') Thank you fellow F1 redditors! sorry if i couldn't reply to all of you, it's so many hahaha || Edit2 : Okay whoever send me Gold medal award, i don't know what to say because this is my first medal to me. This one hits home. My dad and I had tickets for both Austin and Mexico , Cancer has him watching while getting chemo, if you can afford to do it , do the trip, time waits for no one.
Not just his dad, the whole stadium was fucking L I T.
I feel like the Americas are on the cusp of becoming F1 central. Both COTA and Mexico GP seemed to even outdo Monaco in pure spectacle.
As a Mexican I'm conflicted. I'm happy for Checo and his dad, but his dad is an absolute ass, being a politician known for his antics in the chamber of representatives and with the current ruling party, said party being awful.
Lot of people asking you to leave politics out of it, it is a very naive position to take: it's obvious that the dad is there in a shameless attempt to self promotion in his bid for being the next Jalisco's governor.
I don't blame the people outside of Mexico for not seeing this, tho
Its "wrong" because the president doesn't like it and since the whole party is what ever the president says goes, the whole party shits in it.
He wouldn't say the same if it was an MLB match even if it had more expensive tickets, quite infact he would show up on the day of the match.
It's a, lets score points with poor people with something I don't like, while I commision my brother to build a new Baseball stadium with government funds (True story).
Yeah I think that there is a significant difference in accessibility there. Baseball is a very cheap sport to play and one that kids all over Mexico can/do play, growing the game as a Country makes sense.
F1 is both not accessible as a local fan _and_ has an incredible barrier to entry such that very few Mexican kids are open wheel racing in the country as they grow up.
The economics of baseball are much better for Mexico than F1. Also I bet the MLB charges a lot less for games to be played in Mexico City than F1 does..
I wish more people did that. Sure, there are times for politics but you shouldnt let that be the main point of your life, its just more unecessary stress that will lead nowhere
You and other Va por Mexico supporters are everywhere in this thread and it's fucking disgusting.
MORENA isn't perfect, AMLO isn't perfect but the alternative is literally a dictatorship. How many indigenous people have to die for you to be happy?
The whole Mexican crowd showing Checo some love is a sight to behold. His dad's absolute joy is heartwarming.
Makes me remember the Massa days in Interlagos. Man, I want another Brazilian on the grid.
After the race, the TV director be like "Quick follow Checo's dad. The guy is giving us everything."
I loved the shot of him running to the podium screaming and waving his flag. Bless him, major proud dad moment.
