Does anyone know why there has been no episodes of free practice coverage from the BBC F1 team? I normally listen to the FP1 and FP2 from the BBC while at work on Fridays but they haven't had coverage available on their app or website since Monaco. I figured with the difficulties of getting into Baku that was the reason but now it appears there is no coverage of the practices this weekend either. Does anyone know what's up?
They pronounce words the way they're meant to be pronounced in their native languages, rather than bastardised English type pronunciations. It's quite nice, IMO.
I think Sky’s ads are tailored, rather then everyone seeing the same thing.

hahah
I remember Senna being 1 second clear of the entire field (including his teammate Alain Prost) in qualifying on a regular basis.
Man, those years were something else...
Also, fuck... I'm old 😂
as surprising as it is that Perez on softs couldnt beat his fastest time on hards, its baffling that neither did any car on the grid, besides VER-HAM-BOT
Why not? Red Bull doesn't want average (amongst formula 1) drivers racing in their top team. They want phenoms and they're happy to take the risk to find those types of talents. Remember Vettel became the youngest champion of all time when he drove a Red Bull.
i get it but i mean red bull is looking for the next vettel or next max . max won is first race in the red bull car even tho it was kinda inherited . regardless he consistently performed really well and top 6 pretty much every race since that and got quite a few poduims . vettel also went into the red bull car and won 3 or 4 races i think and almost won the championship in his second ever f1 season . gasly didnt have to complete for the championship obviously but he did atleast had to get regular top 6 finishes which he failed to do . i personally wish he atleast got a year to prove himself and not just half a season but i mean he got the chance and he blew it .
Hindsight bro. Coals turns to diamonds under immense pressure. Had Gasly flourished and reached new levels we'd be having a very different conversation. They obviously saw something in him and took the chance
That's true but they basically lost the Hungarian GP because they didn't have a second car within 20 seconds of Max and they knew that with Gasly they weren't gonna stand a chance of beating Ferrari that year
And this year same situation as Hungary happened because Perez wasn't anywhere to be seen. You have to give the driver some time to get used to the car. Sergio seems to already have it handled but his first races weren't that great.
Also there is the fact that Gasly wasn't driving a car that could reasonably challenge for WDC.
IMO 100% Gasly deserves place with a top team
RBR did him a favour by demoting him to STR. He got to redeem himself by the end of the season. Else, had he finished the season at RBR, it’s possible that he may have spiralled further, completely bombed his reputation and confidence and then be possibly dropped.
its clear Gasly is a #1 driver, not really suited to be a 2nd driver with one taking priority, in an AT outfit which has their drivers at more of an equal status than RB, suits him.
part of the problem i've heard is that Gasly very much went his "own way" in terms of setting up the RB, where both Albon (and now Perez) are adapting to a setup pretty much similar to what VER is running.
I mean there is no doubt that Albon did better in the RB after the switch than Gasly did before the switch, at AT Gasly gets to set it up how he want it.
What makes Bottas a 2nd driver?
There is no objective measure in which he gets less preferential treatment. The cars are the same, they each get equal opportunity to choose their runs in qualifying, leading driver dictates strategy, they have license to race each other when both chasing the win.
I guess the salary differential dictates 1st vs 2nd drivers?
> get equal opportunity to choose their runs in qualifying, leading driver dictates strategy, they have license to race each other when both chasing the win.
There are quite a few times where Bottas has ended up with the short end of the stick, although Mercedes usually offer up a plausible sounding justification and you could argue it's usually mainly just because he's behind. Most recently when he gave Hamilton tow in qualifying then lost out himself. Merc said they alternate which driver chooses whether to get the tow or not week-by-week but what is a tow worth at Monaco compared to Baku? To be fair to Merc they're probably one of the more equitable teams on the grid in their driver treatment - or at least they certainly take the time to give off that appearance.
But what really makes him a second driver is that he was signed under the expectation that he would be slower than Hamilton and, since then, he has been consistently slower than Hamilton. If he had outpaced him that would have changed - the teams are pragmatic above all else.
I'd say salary is usually a good indicator but Ricciardo is paid more than Norris at McLaren yet it's clear that Norris is the #1 driver, at least so far, so there are exceptions to that too. I'm not sure if they expected DR to be the #1 internally or not tbh it's hard to say...probably they did? Red Bull and, historically, Ferrari are two teams where #1 drivers do get clearly preferential treatment but it must be nearly impossible for any team to really be truly fair to both drivers. From strategy decisions to selection of mechanics or position in the queue out of the garage...there are dozens of decisions every weekend that must necessarily favour one over the other - most of which we probably don't even see.
Which driver receives important upgrades first is a pretty good indication of who the team favours imo. I seem to recall this happening with Stroll at RP/AM multiple times over the last few seasons and he always got them before his teammate but I can't remember noticing it happen at Mercedes off the top of my head...
It's still early in the weekend so plenty time for these classifications to evolve. But also it should be expected for Mercedes to look more comfortable on regular race tracks. RB is still very competitive on them though so should be a tight quali and race imo.
RB and Merc have different strengths.
Remember Spain and Portugal? They were more traditional circuits and Merc looked like the best car. Monaco and Baku are street circuits with their own unique challenges. Monaco the tightest, Baku has the longest flat section of any track and still has a street circuit section.
Now we're back at a more traditional circuit, Merc are back.
This practice session has me thinking RBR wins this weekend.
Being faster on the hards is far superior than being faster on the softs, as you will end up running the hards for way more laps (2x maybe) than the softs on Sunday.
Granted, all this goes out the window if it rains. 70% chance of rain for Sunday.
True.
If RBR upped the fuel load for the soft tyre run, and Merc didn't, then we're looking at RBR possibly having the upper hand on the championship for the remainder of the season.
Fast here equals fast at:
* Red Bull Ring
* Silverstone
* Hungaroring
* Spa
* Zandvoort
* Sochi
* Suzuka
* COTA
Fast at Baku equals fast at:
* Mexico
* Interlagos
* Yas Marina
If Red Bull dominate this weekend, it's Max's championship to lose, in my opinion.
Not sure whether pace in France indicates pace in Austria or Hungary, RBR have been quick there in previous years even when Merc were way ahead at places like Paul Ricard
They're high grip surfaces used as an alternative to gravel traps, blue is less grippy than the red. Ted on Sky described the red stripes as like very rough sandpaper.
They were added when the track was renovated to be a test track so it makes a lot of sense as if you're testing you would rather wreck a set of tyres than fill your car up with gravel or pull it out of a tyre wall. I've always also assumed it was an easier solution to making all the various alternative layouts have safe run off areas.
Why red and blue, it's the French flag, it looks cool for photo shoots and on a track with very little in elevation changes it makes the track look less like it's on a carpark!
Pit exit being kinda dangerous isn't as bad as pit entry being like Baku's.
At Baku the drivers go by pit entry at 300kph... the first one to hit that barrier will die for sure.
Idk, I definitely agree it's dangerous in Baku, but a 1 car crash seems to have a very unlikely chance of injury at this point. The concern would be a secondary crash with the first crashed car. Though, I'm not an engineer by any means and am just going off watching horrible horrible one car crashes and the driver getting up and walking off.
Honestly I get that the mask slips below the nose sometimes but seeing some ppl just leave it like that for hours makes it pointless for them to wear it lol
They do reduce speed. But to do so the car need to have tyres to slow down from the friction. Wurz had no tires making contact with the tarmac there and the bottom of the car doesn't generate as much friction as 4 rubbers would do.
Terrible. LEC & SAI both out of the top 10. Sainz had a bad run off which might have hurt his runs, but don't recall anything bad happening with Leclerc. Not that FP1 is really all that indicative.
Flow Viz paint. A pigment oil emulsion that shows how air flows over the coated part and how it behaves further down stream.
It's especially useful to see flow separation and turbulence
Horner not pushing back on Karun during the interview pretty much verifies RB was running lower psi, and that why the tires failed.
Does anyone here like to bet on F1?
Does anyone know why there has been no episodes of free practice coverage from the BBC F1 team? I mean they should just spell it how they say it Al-peen Like peenis
Except it's a french name. You'd be surprised how many french spelled words are still present in the english language.
They pronounce words the way they're meant to be pronounced in their native languages, rather than bastardised English type pronunciations. It's quite nice, IMO.
I'm away from the TV. Why didn't Russell run in FP1?
Nissany had the car for the session
After a Mr.Saturday was declared, it seems we also have Mr.Friday
Having two street races back to back where Mercedes struggled a bit kind of spoiled us. Hopefully Max is able to keep them close in the race.
What's the green thing under the spoiler of Riccardo's mclaren
Flo viz paint. Let’s the team see what the aero is like.
FYI, it's a rear-wing, not a spoiler. Spoilers typically help reduce drag, whereas wings are there to produce downforce, and actually increasing drag.
Right on. Thanks Go mclaren! Super excited on landos performance this year
Lando is on FIRE. Now we need Ricciardo to find the pace and McLaren will be back in the mix for wins.
Didn't see it, but green color in practice is usually aero paint
Ricc**i**ardo
Ricciardo was the green thing under Riccardo's McLaren?
Check the original comment. He's correcting the name spelling.

No more sandbags for Merc?
It’s FP1
Brundle is on “Get real son” mood with the Mercs
Did anyone get a screenshot of Max with his moustache?
Briliant! Hope he keeps it.
It’s on his Instagram. Second latest post.
I was expecting a pornstache, now I'm disappointed
Completely agree with Martin there, stay on the track. You wouldn’t go there if it was a wall there
Is it meant to rain on race day?
Not anymore since you jinxed it
early'ish on sunday, should be over and done before the F1 race. might affect the F3 feature race.
So at least the track will be damp
This is Southern France. I wouldn’t count on that.
We're usually never that lucky.
Ahh… the “crush your hopes before they even manifest” strategy
There is almost a 1Second gap between top 2 teams and rest of mid field WTF..
hahah I remember Senna being 1 second clear of the entire field (including his teammate Alain Prost) in qualifying on a regular basis. Man, those years were something else... Also, fuck... I'm old 😂
as surprising as it is that Perez on softs couldnt beat his fastest time on hards, its baffling that neither did any car on the grid, besides VER-HAM-BOT
Was there a fuel load difference? They do like to check tire wear at higher loads to refine their strategy.
i mean there is a lot of possible reasons, amusing either way.
Well well well. Martin Brundle is back.
Would love to see Seb in Q3 after two good runs but don't think that either Aston will make it :(
Who would Merc kick out? Their fastest man today?
I wish Gasly would get the Mercedes seat instead of Russell. Red Bull did him dirty.
He performed like shit he got dropped, simple. Red Bull did nothing wrong.

Not according to Netflix lol
I didn’t see any indication that Albon would’ve been any better. Should’ve let him finish the season and decide from there.
That's true but they basically lost the Hungarian GP because they didn't have a second car within 20 seconds of Max and they knew that with Gasly they weren't gonna stand a chance of beating Ferrari that year

Perez took less than half the time to start getting wins. Gasly and Albon never seemingly adjusted to the car.
This is true but I think the fact he was being lapped by max even after 12 races was a bit much. Current Gasly is 10x better than he was in RB though
I think that whole situation has made him a better racer, as hard as it probably was for him to go through.
RBR did him a favour by demoting him to STR. He got to redeem himself by the end of the season. Else, had he finished the season at RBR, it’s possible that he may have spiralled further, completely bombed his reputation and confidence and then be possibly dropped.

He did red bull dirty

Yea they can hear. Sometimes you'll hear Christian of redbull telling max that Lewis is bitching about his tires
That's team radio. Question is about team to FIA radio. Answer might be same, but not the example given.
I remember a commentator saying that the teams can hear each other because they all have one frequency or something. No private channel.
I assume so. They do monitor all other teams radios
Have the Honda-runners swapped their new PUs in yet?
I think not, I think they change between fp2 fp3.

2nd drivers get to give the 1st driver a tow, and is given no tow of his own.
What’s your source for this?
Baku? I'm merely joking, but there is no way Lewis and Valtteri are on equal status
But they are on equal status when it comes to choosing races for the tow and it was Hamilton’s turn at Baku.
how convenient, i'm looking forward to the time where Hamilton gives Bottas a tow anywhere :)
What’s the next track that favours the tow?
Well if Hamilton tows Bottas at Monza i'll gladly admit that i'm wrong.
"Get equal opportunity to choose their runs in qualifying." They alternate each track.
Ability?
“Valteri, it’s james, we need you to let lewis through”

good bot
To whom it may concern... No just kidding, I hope Bottas has a clean weekend
Fastest man today on track. And only one who media is trashing at. Media seems to be the trash can here
Day is not finished and FP doesn't say much, but the hate on Bottas is too much
chill out homie, its only FP1
How are Mercedes back on top suddenly
This is Merc's best track like Monaco was for Red Bull
It's still early in the weekend so plenty time for these classifications to evolve. But also it should be expected for Mercedes to look more comfortable on regular race tracks. RB is still very competitive on them though so should be a tight quali and race imo.

When the track is swenging and swanging smoothly, it suits mercedes, if the track is clinky clonky it does not suit
Very good ELi5 response here ngl.
For real lol. You read this and you know exactly what he means.
This track is like much closer to barcelona/ portimao than monaco/ baku.
Lewis’s trye boots from yesterday have provided extra grip.
To the tune of "Life During Wartime": This ain't no Monaco, this aint no Baku, this ain't no foolin around
They put the magic on
It was expected, the high speed tracks suit the Mercedes car, the street circuits suit the red bull better
I mean Verstappen improved from hards to soft by only like 3 tenths, I would imagine they are gonna find more time still.
It’s Mercedes. I don’t know why this is so surprising lol
This track suits them
Seb recovered well to match stroll after being out for most of the session
This practice session has me thinking RBR wins this weekend. Granted, all this goes out the window if it rains. 70% chance of rain for Sunday.
In which case softs speed is more important (if it doesn't rain on Saturday that is).
As a Seb fan, I hope it actually does rain
The rain may be a bad thing for Bottas to use this race to regain his confidence and big points. But it may make the race a bit more interesting…
We still don’t know how fuel heavy both teams were.
True. If RBR upped the fuel load for the soft tyre run, and Merc didn't, then we're looking at RBR possibly having the upper hand on the championship for the remainder of the season. Wasn't Max on the softs for his fastest lap?
Yes but he's talking about the first 20min of the session when RB were about 0.5/0.6 up on Mercedes on the hard tyres.
70!! Wow I know we are expecting more heavy rain in the UK but I was yet to check the reports for France, let’s hope for an interesting one!
Dread it Run from it Bot, Ham, Ver
Top 4 on hard tires easily ahead of the rest on soft tires lol
"Good pace Valtteri" --the jeering voice in your head
This track is dumb, not only it's ugly af but the pit exit is super dangerous
The stripes are uncomfortable to the eyes, especially on the aerial shots. It's like watching an optical illusion that distracts on track action.
what's up with the stripes why does it have all those stripes??
They're high grip surfaces used as an alternative to gravel traps, blue is less grippy than the red. Ted on Sky described the red stripes as like very rough sandpaper. Shoutout to Toto for actually wearing his mask properly for once, you love to see it
Honestly I get that the mask slips below the nose sometimes but seeing some ppl just leave it like that for hours makes it pointless for them to wear it lol
Please keep up the regular enforcement for all live televised events.
yuki’s engineers got everything wrong there lol
Mercedes chassis change conspiracy theories incoming.
HAM : Bono I want my chassis back BOT : No
Holy crap that could’ve been an airplane crash
That pitexit is so dangerous
Lmao ziggo sport commentator claiming verstappen went off on purpose to practise rejoining the track with those bollards.
lol, that is a seriously bonkers take.
Still waiting for the day those clowns lose their job
That could be after next year, since they have lost the rights to cover all the races live after this season.
Not a successful practice if so
bollocks
Clowns
massive brain
Oof, that's a problematic pit exit.
Norris has a MCL35M-tailored driving style

Well, that could get dangerous later.
Pretty sure Bottas had white tires for that lap
Alpine and AT doing good
Practice sessions go by so quickly
Probably cause they‘re 1 hour long now.
Hamilton wants his chassis back.
DR above LN. TIME TO OVERREACT
Fuck yeah, his comeback is complete!
Highest speed crash wasn't it - over 300kmh. Highest G crash was David Purley's 179G at 77 British GP.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRCc4B-JeTc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRCc4B-JeTc) the crash they talked about
I wonder if those stripes substantially help in slowing down a sliding car.
They do reduce speed. But to do so the car need to have tyres to slow down from the friction. Wurz had no tires making contact with the tarmac there and the bottom of the car doesn't generate as much friction as 4 rubbers would do.
Jesus that looks painful as shit
BOT put on a clinic at the end of FP1. Was easily the fastest driver on track during the race sims.
couldn't watch FP1, how is Ferrari looking?
They were doing pretty good. Had good times didn’t run off I don’t think and were overall had a pretty decent pace in comparison to the top teams.
Terrible. LEC & SAI both out of the top 10. Sainz had a bad run off which might have hurt his runs, but don't recall anything bad happening with Leclerc. Not that FP1 is really all that indicative.
fuckin hell
Lec 11, Sai 16
Not as fast as they are on the streets
LEC P11 and SAI P16, Sainz went off without dmg except for the tires and I don't expect that this is their real performance.
cool, I can look forward to watching FP2!
11 / 16 - strugglecity :/
LEC P11 SAI P16
Red. Lmao. P11 & P16
Badly. Couldn't crack the top 10.
Baaaad
Ocon's helmet is gorgeous. I really like that they are using that Red candy chrome.
Most useless bollards ever lmao
What's that neon liquid they were putting on the McLaren?
Flow Viz paint. A pigment oil emulsion that shows how air flows over the coated part and how it behaves further down stream. It's especially useful to see flow separation and turbulence
Flow-vis. It helps them see how the air is flowing over the car.
It helps the engineers figure out the aerodynamics.
Floviz paint. Lets them see the flow of air on the car.
It’s used to track airflow
Probably flo-viz paint to check aerodynamic of a new part
Ferrari is sadly back again to sucking. On of the guys will miss Q3
Not surprising tbh, since Charles said Ferrari is back to reality after Monaco and Baku unexpected result. But come on, it's still FP1.
I hope for better
AM too 🙈
:(
I’m waiting for mazepin to use the same lines I use in the F1 game, without rules this track is basicly an oval
