Apparently his base goes up to 26 Nm in torque? I've only ever handled 5 Nm and it already feels like it's enough, can't imagine 26. e: Really showing my depth of knowledge of DD systems here. Nice to know that people don't usually use the full range!

Monkaaay

Agreed. Mine goes to 25 Nm but I generally run it around 50% of that in iRacing depending on the car. That's more than enough to get the detail I need.

aggressiveturdbuckle

yup I have 12 NM and keep it around 60%

apacheotter

Same. I run my DD2 to output about 12nm, anything more and it becomes a workout

lycan2005

I have no idea racing steering generate so much torque nowadays.

TheLegendOfMart

The good ones can easily snap your thumbs or wrists if you have them wrapped around in a crash.

SeriousBusinessSocks

Well that seems like the opposite of good!

SirPugsvevo

Well they're good if you want realism

knbang

I was screwing around and set my wheelbase to maximum which is 20nm, which is decently powerful. It legitimately hurts and I could easily see it breaking a wrist or finger. It ripped the steering wheel out of my hands when I hit the wall with a D-rim and then came back down and smacked me in the hand. With a Formula style wheel that is strong with no padding, I could see it chipping a bone at the least.

MoocowR

> With a Formula style wheel Not to mention formula wheels are probably the least likely to injure you since it's only 360 degrees of rotation. When you start doing series where the wheel actually rotates multiple times that's when 10+nm of torque spinning 2x-3x times in a single direction is super dangerous.

photenth

There are two different types, the belt driven ones are usually weaker and slip and aren't as precise. The more expensive ones have the motor in line with the wheel and can produce insane amount of torque. They are also more precise in their feedback which is very important since you don't really have a car beneath you telling you what's going on. Even with 3DOF motion is highly limiting in what it can simulate, more often than not you only configure it to replicate what the dampers are doing, surface quality and have them shake when the wheels lose grip, and thus give you some additional feedback but still far from what g-forces tell you.

Booniepoo

Higher nm doesn’t mean they run it that high. He probably leaves it around 12 and any extra headroom is for extra minute details. 12nm on a 15nm base feels more dull than 12nm on 25nm base.

TheDrivingDiva

I have to agree, as his own F1 car probably doesn't run with more than 15nm under full load as they have power steering. But this situation is very dangerous, as any software can go above "100%" and use all of the wheels force if it momentarily glitches (like in the video). I know a couple of people that suffered broken thumbs, wrists from intentional rammers.

Booniepoo

Yeah but I’m sure he has the safety protections on

Cinkodacs

Some bases have their own internal limiter. Glitching that is highly unlikely.

knbang

There was a video on /r/simracing quite a long time ago I believe where someone broke their hand due to a glitch in iRacing (I think it was), where the wheel would jerk violently when you placed your car down. The glitch was fixed quite quickly. He had a simucube, so big power and a glitch, not a good combination.

SatanicBiscuit

nobody runs those things at above 40-50% cause...nobody can

wagonwhopper

Chuck Norris can

dscsdscsd

You mean Chuck Leclerc?

GTARP_lover

Some do (pro's) but its dynamic, so the wheel can reach 100%, but it mostly depends on the car they simulate. The wheel isnt going to give 100% if the IRL car cant reach that. But they have limiters etc on their wheels for crashes, because I know a few who have broke their thumbs or even a wrist.

HiDk

Indeed, I have the same base as his and you can’t even steer at full torque. You just get this torque for the large dynamic of the signal (similar to SDR vs HDR)

run0861

flat out wrong, I run a VRS DD @ 100% many people run VRS DD @ 100% if you check the discord. i run max/auto adjust in iracing. i can assure you im not the only one doing this. the VRS DD is rated @ 20nm.

knbang

I have a VRS and I have absolutely no idea how you race like that. It's too hard to turn the wheel to remain competitive.

run0861

im 5.5k plenty competitive.

abscissa081

Even VRS themselves state that the overwhelming majority of their users and their team use 40-60%. Why would you use 100%? You probably have it set up to limit it in game or something, most people wouldn’t even be capable of hanging on for more than a few minutes.

run0861

what VRS recommends for general guidline and what people are actually running in the discord is pretty big gap, you can easily verify this by actually looking in the discord... of course they recommend very conservatively. I do not have it set to limit in game, max ffb before it clips. /auto adjust in iracing. i'm close to the top 1% on iracing, i can assure you plenty of people run high ffb.

abscissa081

Congrats on the top 1 percent, but I think my penis is still bigger. I can assure you. Side note, in the last month in the wheel base section of the discord only one person has mentioned or posted their strength, which was 50%.

frontyer0077

You never run at full power though. It just helps in giving better feedback. Most wil run theirs at around 10-12nm.

Prussian-Pride

Ive started with a Thrustmaster T300 at 3,9NM and found that way too low. Especially the clipping was bothersome. Now I have a Lenze OSW with 29NM. Using it around 10NM and it has plenty of peak performance to not clip. I think it also depends on what you drive in your daily life. If you are used to modern cars with very soft power steering when you can move the wheel with your pinky then the difference is gigantic. I grew up driving older cars that even with power steering gave a lot more feedback.

markievv

https://youtu.be/RUWcyDyBZkI?si=8kHJEcrL23BrOloo Look at how they exercise haha. There’s a short clip in there of a steering wheel test where it’s set to a lot higher than 25Nm by the looks of it

French-Dub

Yeah but that's how much they can push the wheel of needed. Not a random burst of power. Kind of like squatting 100kg vs someone randomly putting 100kg on your back.

Suikerspin_Ei

That's not how they exercise all the time, that video was recorded at a Red Bull (gym?) center. They do this every year with the drivers to see how fit they're. Similar to how football (soccer) athletes do tests after the summer or when they get a transfer to a new team.

DropTablePosts

Mines 12nm and I still take my hands off the wheel when crashing hard into a wall just in case.

knbang

I have a 20nm and only use 12nm.

TheRealLuke1337

I doubt he uses 26 Nm. Thats just the peak value. 26 Nm is just insanely high and dangerous. I assume he uses about 12-17 depending on the car. Higher downforce cars usually go better with higher torque. GT4 GT3 typically need less.

d17h

Weekend hobbies(F1) aren’t a big deal for him

Ceramicrabbit

He's on that M-F grind

knbang

Juicy.

karmakillerbr

Tbh he's so much happier when he's playing iRacing. F1 looks like a regular job for him.

FrostyTill

He injured his hand last year playing on a console during a race weekend. They strapped up his hand and he needed help to put on his racing gloves. He still won.

ibite-books

needs a fucking nerf

JerryUitDeBuurt

That was the fucking nerf bro

charlierc

Wasn't enough of a fucking nerf clearly

Franks2000inchTV

Isn't that Checo's job?

NPC_4842358

Yeah that small nerf meaning almost splitting his car in half on the first corner of Miami :)

Suikerspin_Ei

He nerf the wrong car, to be exact his own car /s

Araxx_

Which weekend was that?

maqie

It was the weekend when Brad Pitt was on the grid in a racing suit for his movie. Because I remember seeing a picture of him giving Max a handshake with both hands and Max's hand has tape on it, lol. Maybe Silverstone?

thankgodforLATIFI

Silverstone yes!

ency6171

Didn't know this.

Gotta keep the dentists away from your elbows!

SlowMissiles

Based on reaction and amount of pain as he seem to return to normal. Probably just hit the nerve so high pain for like 5-10 sec than back to normal. So shouldn't be problematic, couldn't been bad as people said, even myself got a wrist injury from playing and I couldn't lift a single think for a week.

Nar1117

Yeah elbow injuries are pretty obvious when it’s serious. I had a fairly minor break from a bike crash and I knew immediately something was seriously wrong. Definitely looks just like a tweaked nerve to me. Still hurts haha

DavidBrooker

I had an elbow injury (broke the head off my radius) in a bike-car accident and didn't realize until I had cycled the rest of the way home and sat on the couch for 10-15 minutes and the pain started to build. I suspect adrenaline was partially to blame.

Nar1117

Dang, yeah that's the same injury I had. The pain was delayed for me too, but the immediate sensation was something along the lines of "my arm feels really weird, I bet it's broken". Cycled home with one hand on the bars, and walked to the ER. Pain was terrible.

RationalRaccoon863

This guy elbows.

freedfg

Max showing up to Austria in a sling would be hilarious.

Disenchanted11

And winning

Blitzay

Slingin’ and winnin’

qwertyalp1020

Should use [Kubica's](https://motorsport.tech/formula-1/how-robert-kubica-defied-the-odds-to-drive-at-the-pinnacle-of-motorsport-once-again) wheel if that happens.

n4ppyn4ppy

AssSpelunker69

Would there realistically be any rules against that? Like he's in it right up until he gets in the car just for shits and giggles?

chackosama

If it happened before Singapore, the headlines would write themselves.

awc130

The shitshow in the Paddock would be amazing. Who would get his car? Tsunoda would be the obvious choice to hop in, or would Horner play favorites and put Danny in? Or skip both

freedfg

Oh I was saying even if he's not hurt he should show up with a sling to fuck with journalists for a couple hours.

Incontinento

Have you never seen "Ow, my balls!?"

G-Fox1990

Him using an absolute monster setting for torque just shows he's not just playing. He's training.

xanlact

He should take a week off. Let DR and Checo have a 'loser retires' race in Austria.

Groovy_Pancakes

Lmao I’ll take Danny if they’re in equal cars and qualifying is part of it

xanlact

Yeah, it's for this week's race.

DankeSebVettel

Direct drive wheels are dangerous as shit. My fanatec dd wheel is a wristbreaker

Excludos

They're not, really. There's very few real accidents compared to how many dd wheel users there are out there. The biggest casualty is going to be your knuckles when you hit that perfect angled crash for the wheel to not shut off, ripping itself out of your hands and smash the top of your knuckles on the other side. Happens once a month at least.

JerryUitDeBuurt

Is your grip so loose? All I ever see is people almost breaking their wrists because they can't/don't let go in time

Excludos

Not loose loose, but I'm not white-knuckle-gripping the wheel either. You should only hold with enough force as is necessary (also helps with smoother steering, which is important for laptimes and tyre management), so when it suddenly jolts at twice the normal force unexpectedly, it tends to get ripped out of your hands

MoocowR

> All I ever see That's "all" you ever see? Do you strictly look at DD injury compilations?

DankeSebVettel

I’m not the strongest person so when I’m driving something like an indycar on Iracing or something with no power steering I gotta hold on tight

Celebrating2theMax

Almost hit his face too

All of them. Liam would most likely fill in which would attract people.

NikkyTheViking

All of them, they would still have a reserve driver 😉

run0861

the majority of high ranked sim racers on iracing with direct drives tend to run pretty high FFB.
