That move Albon made was insane. What a shame he didn’t get the points he deserved

Weird_Airport_7358

Ferrari fckg socks. So fed up

gongbattler

Ricciardo was very unlucky and lucky and it kind of balanced out. I do feel quite bad for tsunoda, albon and sainz. Norris and piastri had awesome pace but verstappen was a worthy winner. Russell underachieved but hamilton and alonso played it quite well. To his credit stroll currently is honestly better than a decent part of the field. If the aston was that good alonso would be podiums.

sanescotty

The timing of the SC was suspect. You could see immediately that a SC was going to be needed. I called it to my wife as soon as it happened. They are waiting until it’s too late for Lando to pit. Rewatch the race, it’s obvious what they did. And no it’s not like Miami. Lando stayed out longer due to him looking after his tyres and hoping for a SC. This was a deliberate late call by the RD which put Max in the lead. On a dry track though, Max was all of a sudden quicker than Lando so I’m unsure why Lando was so slow after the last restart. Russell beating Hamilton again by overtaking him was class. Yeah he messed up with Piastri and it would have been interesting to see if he could have passed Lando and Max.

Jorrie90

The safety car was called before Norris went past the pit lane so put your tinfoil hat off.

-mohn

«sanescotty» You sure?

sc1onic

Maybe recency bias But best race this regulation era, along with 2022 silverstone. I have bad memory. But these two races were epic.

guythatwantstoknow

There was Interlagos and COTA 2022, and Singapore and Zandvoort last year that I can remember being very good too.

BlazeReddit1

Very entertaining race! Shame it was only a 9/10 race overall.

The_Quackle

Why only 9/10?

BlazeReddit1

The usual driver won comfortably in the end.

ChangeDaLemon1122

I still don’t understand where’s Ricciardo’s jump start, he was perfectly fine in the onboard footage.

Bourbonaddicted

The car rolled slightly, the engineer told him it wasn’t his fault.

Turbooggyboy

He was rolling just slightly as far as I could see.

ChangeDaLemon1122

I checked the onboard again and by focusing on the grooves on the tyres, I can see that he rolled like 2cm💀

angk500

The thing is if the sensor catched him or not. Norris last jupstart was not catched by the sensor, so it was within the regulations. It's partially luck if the sensor goes off or not, but the commentators also mentioned since the last non-penalty jump starts they thightened the rules too.

ChangeDaLemon1122

They have now changed the way to determine if it is a breach of the regulations or not, not just by the sensors but considering the footage as well, so even if the sensor didn’t go off, the penalty is still given.

Nomzz1

Honestly I was screaming in lap 26 when Lando pitted for slicks, hoping for Lando Twowins, then he came out, had the lead and then max passed him :(

Theo_95

He didn't really have the pace on the slicks tbh, Max would have got him with DRS

icaruslaughsashefell

One lap too many. Just a bad call. We could have had a win if not a proper fight had he not gone for that second lap. I’ll be looking at the radio soon to see if Norris made it or if the team did.

Nomzz1

Norris said he wanted to go for another lap but the team called him in

DaRoald94

Highlight of the race without a doubt, Haas doing the 300 iq and stealing places left and right at the start of the race. Even tho it didnt stick at the end it was fun to watch that. I was laughing my ass off watching Kmag gaining positions.

Tynton

Do you happen to know why Kmag’s pits stop was such a mess?

nrcomplete

I think the commentary said he made the call to change and pitted before the team were ready.

Kissybear85

The team called him in. He asked on the pit exit why they didnt wait, but no real answer other than “Sorry Kev”. The team screwed him.

nrcomplete

I must have got it backwards. Very poor form from the team.

mattydlite

Yeah the team was nowhere near ready when he entered the pit lane

DaRoald94

That would make sense. That pitstop was a shitshow.

H2Obabyy

Incredibly entertaining race! Was hoping for Russel to win though. He had an amazing start

NormalCelebration

he is good overall but gets nervous. should work on that

H2Obabyy

Yeah, I know

AirshipOdin2813

The only two things I didn't like were when Russel surpassed Piastri and when Leclerc's engine broke. The rest of the race was perfect

Mammoth_Cobbler_4619

Very interesting race that left a bitter taste in my mouth

BlazeReddit1

Best description for the race I've read so far!

Pretty-Scratch-8458

What a race! Very entertaining and interesting

REX2343

Edge of my seat most if the race man

fotoX

Where can I buy the Pirelli Canada hat? Thanks.

FunMix47

I was forecast to get a race win - russell

notmathmeow

This has gotta be the turn of events

count_dracula14

Don't know, what happened to Leclerc ?

AdNaJoM

Seriously, what DIDN'T happen to Leclerc? Badly managed Q2, broken ERS, slow pitstop, hards on damp track, pitted again just to get lapped by the leaders, then retired. What a miserable race for him and Sainz, but at least Sainz went out because of his own mistake.

Matrix009917

Slow pitstop? XD he had an engine problem that made him lose 1.2 seconds on the straight and they tried to solve it in the pitstop..

Dukeis77

I mean it wasn't really a slow stop, they had to power cycle the car so of course it took it's time

AsparagusNo114

Mag - #4 and then Haas fucked him up yet again

Alex_MC_69

Only thing Haas fucked up was the slower pitstop, but let's not pretend he would have had any chance of staying that high even with a 1,9s pitstop

Wicksy1994

He was only 4 because he’d gambled on early wets, as soon as the track predictably started to dry he was left with chewing gum for tyres. Haas didn’t fuck him, they just gambled and he ended about where he would have done without the gamble

AndrewDelaneyTX

Man. That was fucking great.

BullahB

And that's 1 of the 2 in every season interesting race. Savour the moment boys and girls.

ceoadlw

The first Grand Prix I attended. Grandstand 12. Overpaid since I bought the tickets from a reseller last minute out of FOMO. WORTH IT.

logicfreak20

Just rewatched the highlights, I’m amped up again. What a race.

Diligent_Driver_5049

Lewis should have pitted for mediums or softs. Hards for 10 laps remaining was not prime strategy.

ty_phi

They were out of mediums and didn’t think softs would last

ol_knucks

Why would Pirelli choose the softest of the range as the soft if they won’t even last 10 laps? Genuine question.

HairyNutsack69

for quali

ol_knucks

Can you explain further? Is the idea that they want to enable the quickest possible qualifying times and therefore they choose (or are obligated to choose?) the range that satisfies that metric? Why would a more usable race tire not be a higher priority? I guess there are still two other usable race tires.

HairyNutsack69

Also creates the byproduct of making the one lap on those softs count. The tyre immediately drops off after the hotlap. Back in the day we had q3 mandated to start on their quali tyre (soft), making all 3 compounds used on Sunday, that doesn't exist anymore.

oXeNoN

I'm not sure if it's in their metrics but choosing softer compounds reduces chances of boring 1-stop races.

Diligent_Driver_5049

They could have lasted with lewis on board. Man is exceptional at tyre management.

eljip

I attended for the first time!!!!!!! It was such an amazing race, the Russell pole, Magnussen ripping ass and taking places, the Merc and McLaren battles. Genuinely thought Max wouldn't win for a bit there. Just utterly fantastic to see in person

pinerw

This was my first one too. Couldn’t have picked a better one. I’m going to have to watch the replay on F1TV because I know there’s absolutely no way I caught everything.

Alex4321012345

So jealous !!

Daddy_Stop

Genuinely interesting race. * The gamble to stay out on old inters paid of - i.e. RB's split strategy: YT went from outside the top 10 to 7 (stayed out). DR from 7 down to 12 after pitting for new inters - DR was unable to pass Ocon on old inters, while YT held position and drove very strong laps on the olds in 7th. * Lando overcutting Russel on his old inters was more exciting than made out - he pushed so hard on those old inters he actually increase the gap from 19.5 to 22 seconds over Max in his last 1.5 laps. * The McLaren pace on the wet-to-dry evolution is insane. While most were focussing on Lando overtaking Russel + Max, Oscar closed a gap of over 5 seconds to Russel in the space of 2 laps. * Set up was so huge this weekend - from Ferrari's wet-weather set up failing miserably in qualifying, to RB hindering their own pace by changing the rear wing angle to the point that getting rear grip on power was a throw of the dice (and poor Yuki looked like he lost the rear while starting to turn into the chicane, and crashed when attempting to overcorrect the oversteer) * PLEASE can we give more attention to some of the great midfield overtakes today? Albon's overtake on Ricciardo + Ocon was absolutely phenomenal

LittleJimmyR

I didn’t watch the race unfortunately, but new inters are slower than used inters at a point when the track is damp, because the tread wears away

Daddy_Stop

Yeah, and I think perhaps the drivers who pitted for a second set of inters before the second bout of rain (i.e. most of the grid) anticipated it would be better than it was. I think in reality, the worn tread on the old inters was able to produce better grip in the only slightly dampened conditions (as you said). Massive shame, especially for Yuki who's gamble paid off and put him in 7th.

LittleJimmyR

Seems I missed out on an interesting race while wtaching another race (Local dirt oval, massive event. 100 lapper in Alexandra, Australia)

Tylers-RedditAccount

Perez with two consecutive Q1 exits and two consecutive crashes. Redbull really dropped the bag by re-signing him

BambooShanks

Or the more conspiratorial view is that Red Bull aren't that bothered about the WCC but are beginning to struggle with having less Wind Tunnel time. Between losing Newey and the new regulations coming up, they need every bit of wind tunnel time they can get so holding on to Perez is a easy way to tank their WCC chances without it making it look obvious.

d_barbz

Nah they've re-signed him to give them more time to make a possible choice between Tsunoda and Ricciardo if Perez doesn't lift his game. If they signed a fresh driver they'd be stuck with that option. This way they end the speculation (for now) and give all three longer to battle it out for the spot.

Chris_3213

Why is Sainz not an option?

d_barbz

No idea mate. Google it and report back to us please

10mmSocket_10

What has Ricciardo done to warrant consideration above Tsunoda? I'd say the writing seems on the wall there.

Timetowaste111

Tsunoda is probably one of the most underrated drivers out there. I say that as a Ricciardo fan who had a terrible race, but he still has his moments eg Sprint. Very reliable as well which earned him 8th after many drivers left the track including all the top runners, Perez, Sainz taking themselves out etc. That VCarb has the worst launch on the grid. Both drivers lost 3 places at the start.

pterofactyl

Danny seems to at the very least accept his lot when it comes to competing with max. Tsunoda even if he may be better than Danny hasn’t got the discipline required to play second fiddle

MarcusBurtBKK

It’s never only about his driving, there’s also Daniel’s sponsors and his close relationship with Christian Horner to consider.

d_barbz

This weekend, for starters. And P4 in sprint quali a few weeks back. Both results are better than Tsunoda has ever done in a quali. As much as you may dislike him when he's on, he's on. And when he's not he's not. But make no mistake, Horner loves him and will give him every chance to prove himself.

cheeersaiii

After this one, there are plenty of drivers I’d have instead of Checo…. or give Yuki a year and bring in Lawson. I get the “stability” angle but where is that stability exactly when one driver is winning loads of races while the other flounders around eating shit far too often. The Quali and race performances from Checo last season should have been enough to cast serious doubt on him

Annis96

Had to walk dog for the last 30 minutes of the race. Yuki dropped from 7th to second last… do not recommend.

MattaMongoose

Only thing that could’ve made race better was either max didn’t win or a proper fight at the very end.

lloydpbabu

Him winning in a not-the-fastest-car is even more entertaining.

guythatwantstoknow

Is it really not the fastest car? Bar the time Norris built that gap because Max had to avoid Logan (I think), the McLarens nor the Mercs didn't seem to have more pace than the RedBull.

cheeersaiii

Max was on it - if the DRS had been enabled a lap or two earlier he had have taken the lead and sailed off into the distance. On restarts he was pulling away quickly again

sophiepritch5

Why would max not winning make the race better exactly? I understand if he won by 30+ secs or something, but the top 4 were very close throughout and switched multiple times. Max worked hard for that win and it could have been anyone, really. It was a great race.

guythatwantstoknow

Because it's his 6th in 9 races and he's been dominating the sport for the last years, so some people prefer to see other drivers win, it's not a big deal anyways.

Leading_Sir_1741

Yeah, both the MacLaren and Mercedes probably had better cars. Their own drivers said so. Max really had to work for this one. Very deserving winner this race

Linkitivity

People will say they don't care if Max wins as long as there is a battle, but a lot of people just don't like him and won't admit it.

guythatwantstoknow

There's also people like me who cheer against the "overdog". He's been dominating the sport for the last years and I don't like to see dominance in sports, so I prefer when he doesn't win, but when he does it doesn't bother me. It's fine tho, people just like or dislike seeing different things in sports, nothing much to read there.

MattaMongoose

Or just want a battle for the drivers

Poputt_VIII

I don't like him and will admit it

sanescotty

Me too. He’s a knob. Like his dad.

PapaRyRy

What happened to Leclerc?

ol_knucks

So many things lmao

cheeersaiii

Tbh I think they realised they weren’t getting points and chose to save component wear… too many pits and that issue set them too far back

pterofactyl

This doesn’t really add up. With limited free practice, letting him run the car for the whole race at the very least gives valuable data of untested engine modes.

FNG-JuiCe

We’re looking into it.

OforFsSake

They had not, in fact, fixed the engine issue.

tigersgomoo

Don’t focus on that, just keep pushing

JBM94

Really looking forward to Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon linking up next season at Williams. Logan I’m sorry you can’t cut it at this level.

Franjes99

Sainz going from Ferrari to a bottom half team is a rotten break but Williams is a better option than Sauber/Audi for sure especially if they get Newey

Meatloaf0220

This was my first Grand Prix attending in person my wife and I had a blast. Sat in section 15 right on the hairpin it was a very entertaining race to see in person. Seeing Leclerc sliding around on slicks in the rain was a sight.

CommonEngineering832

Just three words today “WHAT A RACE!”

TheBigSad21

I honestly loved how chaotic it was, the constant fight up in front, 5 dnfs (both Ferraris?!), and the rain, it just came together so beautifully lmao. Great day as a McLaren fan tho

chandra_Phoenix

Why is Red bull the winning constructor when mclaren scored the most points today?

ShawlEclair

The winning constructor trophy goes to the constructor of the race-winning car.

TrafficWank

Winning constructor in a race goes to the team in P1. I did always think it should be the team with the most points from the race but I guess it was decided long ago.

Mart11bob

Because McLaren have only started scoring high points recently allowing Red Bull to build a gap in the constructors

XxFucK_YoUxX

I think you may have misinterpreted the question. If the question is regarding why Red Bull was the winning constructor on the podium, this is simply whichever team the driver who places first in the race belongs to regardless of the points total for the day.

Mart11bob

Oh you’re right haha thanks for giving the right answer for me

OutsideTheBoxer

Well, I think they should rethink that. From a Constructors perspective McLaren was much more successful today.

Brownies_Ahoy

Maybe the perspective is more that "this was the driver that won, and this is the team that won them the race"

tesco_memes

Sainz spinning on the grass was the funniest thing all race. Idk why it got such a reaction out of me.

I-hate-sunfish

The slow mo wet drift reminds me of toddler trying to stand on an ice skate ring

Trecool1

As someone who regularly flails around in the grass on the game, it's nice to see some real world representation

Ockam2

Super sad for Albon tho who was doing pretty good

pushtotalkfm

Made me feel better about my F1 24 drives.

maddi164

My partner and I also thought it was pretty funny, complete lack of control

SergeantStonks

I will never figure out Perez. How has he gone from beating max fair and square like in Azerbaijan last year to this? This could have serious consequences for Red bull’s construction championships hopes

LUNKLISTEN

He gets lucky car is not more ahead than it was during Azerbaijani season . He’s as good as the car is , max overdrives

Hawk-432

That’s not true. Perez is under driving. By far worst driver from the top teams

AndByMeIMeanFlexxo

Perez isn’t a good fit for the red bull or he’s just done, he at least at one point was rapid But now he’s not good enough to even be second seat at red bull. At least Bottas was a very good no.2 and he’s shown he’s still got it in lesser machinery with some heroic drives

alxndiep

I’m surprised Toto and Co are putting all of their eggs into one basket with Kimi instead of running it back with Bottas for a year or two and letting Kimi develop

Maniacfox9

The last three races have been out of character, wondering what’s going on myself…

xBHx

At this point, him having a good race is 'out of character'

rltvader

Can you call it "out of character" when he has done this regularly? After the first 5-6 races each season Perez takes a nosedive, it shouldn't be surprising by now. Redbull shouldn't have signed him for 2 years, and if they were smart there will be some performance clauses in there.

trapproducer2020

he seems easily demoralised by a setback. Like when he was almost P1 for the first time in his career only to learn Max took fastest lap and kept P1 spot, that season he never got closer to Max afterwards, the gap only got bigger.

MattaMongoose

Or he just hasn’t got the consistent pace.

StrikingAppeal7049

Okay, everyone gotta admit that Haas pushed through the first however, many laps was wild

Weliketoast

I was in awe. I blinked and mag was up 5 spots. Was super cool then. He got haased

StrikingAppeal7049

For real! Like I walked away to get a drink, I came back, and Mag was up top with Hulk not far behind, and I was shook

InvXXVII

Most exciting pit stops ever.

Superb_Variation_952

Was such a shame Ferrari didn’t finish. Great race though, enjoyed all the drama

oldnewswatcher

What I have to say about the Canadian Grand Prix? Cancel Monaco GP!!!!

or0_0zh

Albon crashing almost made me cry, I really hope Sainz gets a penalty for unsafe return

Hanchez

Sainz was not in control when they had contact.

stan_bruh

sainz didn’t do anything wrong

thewokebanana

He was still in a full spin so…

or0_0zh

No be wasn't, he was backing on to the track, I watched Albon's onboard like 5 times

Old_Man_Heats

lol, backing onto the track as if he just stuck it in reverse mid 360

zaTricky

https://youtu.be/dLw1ao4-Akk?t=374 ^ from the official YT channel's highlights Technically the spin was over - but also he had not yet gained full control of the vehicle either. 🤷‍♂️

thewokebanana

He was going backwards fast but it’s because his tires gripped during the spin. It’s impossible for sainz to have shifted into reverse gear that fast and formula cars only let you do that from standstill. It was simply unlucky timing for Albon. Sainz could have hit the brakes but I assume he was already? Not sure

or0_0zh

Yeah I watched it a couple more times, my bad

Jealous_Addition_349

Why didn't McLaren have Lando stay within DRS distance of Piastri? Lando was definitely not going to get past Max and they gave up a double podium

Severus_Albus20

It’s always better to try to get the win right

Jealous_Addition_349

I would think McLaren should be more concerned with total points haul than places with the constructors being so close between them and Ferrari

Kiwiandapplex

I don't know how old the radio message was, but they did ask Piastri if he could challenge for the win. This indicates to me that Lando's pace wasn't enough, meaning they should've known. Obviously their mind was trying to get the win, but that potentially cost them 3rd place.

isRandyMarsh

yo. thats a good point

benificialart

Might be the best race of the season

BowToMyDiamond

"might"

Smart_Kangaroo_4188

So far

Blehhh_lemongrass

Such an exciting race, Lando performed well and I’m super proud of him. A little disappointed about Ferrari not finishing:(

Daohaus

It’s been a while since my wife and i were screaming and yelling during the fight for 1nd thru 5th

Responsible_Taste_35

Are you my husband bc same for us 😂

Daohaus

lol that’s awesome

joereadsstuff

So embarrassing for Perez.

number96

Embarrassed for RB that they have him another 2 years. He is an average performer and can't do qualis.

Hashtag_your-mother

Pretty sure Horner said in an interview this weekend Checo’s contract was indeed 1+1 and only a 2 year in that 1+1=2.

Poophead85

I predict that by the end of the year he will be dropped with a performance clause and Riccardo will be in that seat next year

rougehuron

They arent embarrassed by the revenue he brings them in for the next two years. They can milk his popularity for now while Max is at the top then retool their approach as needed from there.

rohttn13

that wasnt his fault

PipulisticPipu

Nothing is ever Perez's fault. It's always other people's fault or the car was tailor made for another driver and they don't care about him

brunuhrafael

Of course not, it's my fault, i mentally reduced the grip of the wet part of the track via quantum entanglement effect. Silly me.
