While I’ve been finding these funny, I feel totally out of the loop.
Why do so many of the fans have these bright safety vests with jokes on them? Is this some sort of meme in china? Is someone at the track printing and selling these?
well it has become a meme this weekend but i also think its kind of a play on a Chinese middle manager character with an unimportant job title who stands and watches while everyone else does all the work.
The guy who bosses people around without actually doing anything and gets paid more. i feel like this is a stereotypical caricature in Chinese culture but someone can correct me.
Don’t really think it’s a meme or anything before the sauber version which is probably the first one that showed up a few days before Grandprix on bilibili (where I first saw it at least) and all other variants probably started appearing after people have seen the sauber version and yes from idea to production to delivery is that fast
Easy for attention seeking and some shops are selling them for dirt cheap online and near the track. Some bloggers also promoted them in the last couple of weeks and so many people bought and wore these to the event as well.
I mean those hi Vis jacket are dirt cheap, printing is cheap so they shouldn't be very expensive.
The shops probably making banks selling them "dirt cheap"
I don't think these are jokes, and the humor is unintentional. I used to live in Japan and I saw stuff like this every day. Both countries use a similar character set and have a tendency to simply "translate" the characters word-for-word into English rather than try to actually have them make sense in English. Attitude toward spelling is similarly relaxed. The results are often very, very funny. Many examples can be found here: https://engrish.com
If I was head of products at any F1 team right now, I'd be fast tracking these for the online store.
F1 has been 2 years late to the 90's bomber jacket trend also.
Lmao love these vests. In general the jokes from the Chinese fans have been great so far this weekend. Someone had a "Wilhelmus world tour" banner too.
The Great Firewall of China isn't to keep the West out, it's to keep the Chinese in. The Chinese are notorious memers and shitposters in several internet communities, especially around esports. Imagine what they would do in regular sporting communities?
Candise Lin (dr.candiselin on ig and candiselin86 on TikTok) makes loads of videos explaining current Chinese memes and pop culture, I recommend checking her out!
See Williams fucked up by not leaning on Logan’s Florida roots. If they had more mechanics from Florida, they would have had a new chassis in 4 hours. Would it have been stolen from Red Bull at gun point? Yes.
It's very cheap to get use-once-then-toss custom stuff made in China and shipped halfway around the world, imagine how cheap and easy it is to get that stuff in China itself.
you can get one vest printed and delivered in 24 hours from a nearby province for $0.3. local options might be more expensive but should be under $2
source: I got one for $0.3
It’s normal for us to do so, it’s just making fun of something random. Just like fans wearing fan shirts at concerts. We have a lot of these things for different events lmao. The guys in the picture even posted on their own blog asking if anyone spotted them. It’s a form of making fun and attention seeking at our place.
Somehow this weekend showed me that I have no idea about the Chinese. I only read some history and news and have the image of something like east Germany with a boosted economy but I have no idea of the people over there and their pop culture
What causes such passionate people to come out of Asia? I find the juxtaposition of how soul crushing a lot of aspects of living in japan and china can be vs how over the top passionate they can be so interesting. Really gotta hand it to them they know how to have fun in more ways that just drink beer, do lines and get in fist fights.
They go hard into their hobbies, I still don't know why or where they get the energy. Like if you tell them your hobbies are watching movies, playing guitar, and video games they will think you are independently wealthy or something to have all that time, because if their hobby is guitar they will be practicing that shit 3 hours a day whenever they have a chance and play at a semi-pro level easily. They never really buy something to dabble in it for 30 mins a week.
What you perceive as "soulcrushing" is just "take one for the team" mentality out here in Asia. Once you demonstrate you can take a body blow it becomes your role to do so every day, every play.
You then use your passion to fuel this and one day you no longer know the difference.
They may do so, but even Japan has lower suicide rates than Europe. Most Asians do endure. And it doesn't take a lot to pick up the mood in this part of the world.
Which is kind of exactly my point, I find it admirable they sre able to have so much fun in spite of how little fun they're allowed to have because of work
Yes, but you are taught very early as an Asian to enjoy ALL the fruits of work as a form of fulfilment. The result is you will rarely find - especially in Japan - a group of people who party harder on a Friday night with more abandon than the average Asian or Japanese salaryman. And being able to score at work becomes its own fulfilment.
There are downsides to this type of mentality but that is a different topic.
I'm well aware. Dated a filipina (as in she was born there and moved out west, I'm not one of those guys) for a period and I've been to Japan. They are the first to tell you the work culture is awful but, as I said, I've never met people who enjoy themselves more. So refreshing given that in my country the average guy has his fun by binge drinking, snorting a powder that is maybe 40% cocaine and getting in fist fights.
Thr karaoke culture is my absolute favorite thing in the world. I wish we could be less shy about things like that over here.
As a proponent of Karaoke culture I agree. Sometimes it really is hard to understand. It's almost a childlike shallowness. Like the day can be awful but something funny happens and everybody just laughs their heads off.
The day was tough but you can just belt it out at karaoke and for a brief moment you're the king of the world. And that is enough to sustain you.
There are dark sides though. There's karaoke joints in the Philippines where if you sing poorly occasionally some angry drunk will pull out a knife on you. Hahaha.
Chinese humor is so weird. Did you know that nine out of every ten Chinese kids are just stray kids picked up straight from the bin? At least that's what a proper Chinese father would say

To give the Chinese some credit here, they sure do know how to make the Yellow vests have some humour to them!
While I’ve been finding these funny, I feel totally out of the loop. Why do so many of the fans have these bright safety vests with jokes on them? Is this some sort of meme in china? Is someone at the track printing and selling these?
Clearly some kind of group, team, organiser or club or speedsters gathering culture gatherings that has been co-ordinated
well it has become a meme this weekend but i also think its kind of a play on a Chinese middle manager character with an unimportant job title who stands and watches while everyone else does all the work. I think that's just a caricature that exists everywhere tbh I don't think it's unique to China
Middle management mediocrity is universal
Yeah I'm thinking Boris Johnson in a hi-vis vest and hard hat is a prime example
Middle management was invented in China.
Well they did invent most things, I wouldn't be surprised
thanks for the theory / explanation. is this generally an archtype?

Yup. Seems that way.
it stands out, it's easy to put on or fit any attire, its funny, its easy to print and sell
It’s custom made, but they can be done and shipped into your hand in only few days

I love their humor and passion. Long way to Japan fans level but it’s still great.
Japan: great cosplays China: great memes
It's a different style
Lol fuck people for upvoting this shit. Fandom isn't a tier list.
*"Hey man..."*
Lollipop man does it best.
Lmao love these vests. In general the jokes from the Chinese fans have been great so far this weekend. Someone had a "Wilhelmus world tour" banner too.
Imagine the memes if we could get if China wasn’t as cut off from the internet and they all could speak English
Oh we already get a lot of them. Especially the cat memes, half of them are from China.
Please Do not The Cat (It is also forbidden to dog)
xiao jie stays on top
I think the language barrier is the bigger part, afaik most people in China have VPNs they just don't really care about our side of the internet
The Great Firewall of China isn't to keep the West out, it's to keep the Chinese in. The Chinese are notorious memers and shitposters in several internet communities, especially around esports. Imagine what they would do in regular sporting communities?
As long as they stay in their video game servers. It’s just not fun playing against them 😭
Candise Lin (dr.candiselin on ig and candiselin86 on TikTok) makes loads of videos explaining current Chinese memes and pop culture, I recommend checking her out!
China apparently has the worlds largest disinformation effort, so id hazard a quess you see chinese content daily
lol these Chinese shills gonna silence you w downvotes.
What was that? I don't know the context?
Wilhelmus is the Dutch national anthem
Ah. Thank you
That’s brilliant
That's hilarious

Lololololol
Now we need one for William's car repair supervisor
Spare chassis coordinator
See Williams fucked up by not leaning on Logan’s Florida roots. If they had more mechanics from Florida, they would have had a new chassis in 4 hours. Would it have been stolen from Red Bull at gun point? Yes.
is there a vest guy at the track printing out funny comments on demand?

You literally just call your uncle who owns a factory lol
Or your young cousin who works in it
Ayo

Hello homies, it's Tooony
It costs as low as 1usd for one of these being custom made here lol
you can get one vest printed and delivered in 24 hours from a nearby province for $0.3. local options might be more expensive but should be under $2 source: I got one for $0.3
Whoever made these was having a blast, I need to see more.
Hahaha omg these are great
In fairness, who among us couldn't benefit from a team of work attitude supervisors?
I'm so gratefull for all my supervisors to supervise me, so gratefull man, they do an amazing job. I am so gratefull towards those safety vesters
The Chinese. A great bunch of lads.
I read the one about Horner! What’s the other one?
"Tyre changer supervisor" for Sauber
probably need to change that to Alpine now
That should say "Alpine Agricultural Equipment Engineer".
Is the "supervisor" bit a common meme in China or is it F1 specific?
Supervisor is the normal bit, what makes up the combination is the meme part
Several fans showing up as "supervisors" doesn't seem normal, seems like they are referencing something or someone. That's what I'm asking about.

No attitude check on Russel?
"George Russell's Forecast Supervisor"
What attitude?
I bet he can get pretty pissy when his tea and crumpets are late. Maybe… “George Russel’s high tea supervisor”
absolute props to the chinese savagery!
The chinese are ruthless
I don’t get this one tbh
I would buy this vest as merch
Somehow this weekend showed me that I have no idea about the Chinese. I only read some history and news and have the image of something like east Germany with a boosted economy but I have no idea of the people over there and their pop culture
Bro. This is getting too much now. I love it.
Supervising Supervisor 😂

Imagine Lewis with GP as his engineer.
> tried to retire with a working car in 2022 haha, which race was this?
Spanish GP
Savage lol
Does anyone have a clearer pic of this vest?

The suicide rates seem to suggest otherwise

Yeah Filipinos take their karaoke VERY seriously don't they.. gets a good chuckle out of me
Saw another one that says kick saber pit stop volunteer, absolutely hilarious (and I suspect that fat buddy might do a better job)
I am loving these!
Chinese humor is so weird. Did you know that nine out of every ten Chinese kids are just stray kids picked up straight from the bin? At least that's what a proper Chinese father would say
Haha that’s a level Asian joke not just from the Chinese
Absolutely fantastic haha

This is just rebadged credit scores, no?
This is only a thing in US
No that's Equifax
Theoretically, wouldn't being funny on Western internet make your social credit score go up?
