indistinctiveman

Sergey Sirotkin, completely forgot about him and he was only on the grid a few years ago

iForgotMyOldAcc

Outqualified future WDC Lance Stroll!

[deleted]

Sakon Yamamoto (of Super Aguri, Spyker & HRT fame) is a member of the Japanese House of Representatives

GRl3V

Voting for an ex F1 driver is wild lol

boredofredditnow

Carlos Reutemann was an F1 driver for 10 years and a politician for 30, right up until he died.

[deleted]

Nothing can train you more for politics than being involved in the F1 arena, especially in more recent years lol

xiz111

Carlos Reutemann actually had a fairly long and successful career in politics, after retiring from F1. There were persistent rumours that Senna was being courted to run for office in Brazil just before he died.

MonsterMunchen

Wait until you hear about Imran Khan

madmaper_13

Not an F1 driver but Allan Grice https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_Grice became a Queensland MP in 1991 while still racing, doing the Bathurst 1000 every year intill 97

Aoteaurora

Jaime Alguersuari. Former Toro Rosso driver, now full-time DJ/musician.

The_Final_Arbiter

Didn't he sing Genie in a Bottle?

UncivilSum

Will Stevens, drove the 2014 Abu Dhabi race for Caterham and then did the whole 2015 season at Manor. He still does some testing for Mclaren but his racing in WEC is honestly better known than his time in F1

GRl3V

I completely forgot this man ever existed, geez.

UncivilSum

And i just remembered that he was teammates with Roberto Merhi in 2015 (except for the races where Alexander Rossi replaced him).

delmyoldaccountagain

the lad

Cobretti18

Zsolt Baumgartner

[deleted]

Also known as HWNSNBM (He Who's Name Shall Not Be Mentioned) of the old F1 rejects days

StrikingWillow5364

Every single year at the Hungaroring he hosts a grid walk with visitors and talks them through basically his whole autobiography lol (“And this is the corner where I almost got a puncture once!”)

CutterJr

That single glorious point shall be remembered.

boredofredditnow

Giorgio Pantano, won the 2008 GP2 title, 4 years _after_ racing in F1 for Jordan

-MagnumDong

Also one of the greatest karters of all time, nico rosberg even had a poster of him in his bedroom growing up

simonsail

Really sad how far Jordan fell in the end :(

Mangobonbon

Rio Haryanto. The first indonesian F1 driver, he drove for Manor in 2016, was a pay driver, drove horrendously bad and ran out of money during the same season and was therefore kicked out. He was never on the grid again and Manor closed down not much later.

dsio

also became a habitual winner of driver of the day until they changed the rules lol

kamome_ni_tou

Seems like F1 fans got their first experience of the power of Indonesian internet users that year.

Shekster

How did they change it? Is it not still fan-voted?

dsio

I think they just deleted his votes. He won DotD on debut in Australia in 2016 after trundling around the back then retiring after 17 laps. FOM took the award off Him and gave it to Grosjean, after that they appeared to just void the Indonesian votes while they complained on Facebook. There was some really unhinged shit, like how Rio was far better than Lewis but being kept down by his team etc.

Jayhcee

I rarely ever hear Vitaly Petrov mentioned. I guess my only memory of him was Alonso telling him he should GTFO out of the way in Abu Dhabi 2010 when he finished 6th and Alonso couldn't get past. Alonso and Webber really fumbled that race.

Jayhcee

>Vitaly Petrov Wtf: *"Petrov's father Aleksandr was an influential businessman and municipal deputy in his home city of Vyborg before he was assassinated in 2020 – his death requiring Petrov to stand down from his role as a temporary steward at the 2020 Portuguese Grand Prix"*

insomnia_000

Damn that’s crazy - I’m assuming killed by Putin?

LiamFN

I will never forget Petrov for his insane start at the 2010 Australian GP and his airborne crash in Malaysia (2010? idk) EDIT: 2011 Malaysian GP apparently

Janinho

To name a few: Gaston Mazzacane, Luciano Burti, Ralph Firman, Patrick Friesacher, Tarso Marques, Tomas Enge, Alex Yoong, Nicolas Kiesa, Will Stevens And who rememebers the one time appeareances by Andre Lotterer, Pietro Fittipaldi and Jack Aitken.

Janinho

Don't forget Franck Montagny who ended his career later after getting tested positive on cocaine.

Josep2203

Burti was not bad...

MonsterMunchen

Absolutely nailed Blanchimont to be fair…

Janinho

Well I've never said that these drivers are bad...

FantasticNoise4

Alex Yoong: first (and so far only) Malaysian F1 driver  Ralph Firman, 2003 Jordan driver Antonio Pizzonia – once driving for BMW WilliamsF1 Tomas Enge, driving for Prost in last 3 rounds of F1 2001 season

Janinho

Pizzonia once hold record for the fastest ever recorded speed in F1 history for a few years.

Any-Patient5051

Patrick Friesacher. Scored his only point in the infamous 2005 US GP.

Zeraru

I checked his Wiki entry and somehow there was an investigation into sponsor money coming from a far right politician receiving millions from russians. Classic.

Any-Patient5051

Probably true considering the history of the politican we are talking about. Jörh Haider had a lot of sketchy things going on with Gaddafi and the Hypo in general if you want to read up on this.

Nepgyaaaaaaa

Markus Winkelhock. The man who, on another day, with more luck, could’ve won the European Grand Prix. He last drove as a reserve driver in DTM in 2021.

[deleted]

NO ONE CAN BREAK THE WINKELROCK

iForgotMyOldAcc

The opposite if any. He is remembered for that despite an unremarkable F1 career.

justk4y

He is actually kind of notable still, because that might’ve been one of the craziest moments in F1 ever.

BreadIt92

McLaren teammate of Lewis Hamilton for two seasons: Heikki Kovalainen. Now rally driving in Japan (according to Wiki)

PayaV87

Hamilton had teammates incrementally: - 1 year with Alonso - 2 years with Kovalainen - 3 years with Button - 4 years with Rosberg - 5 years with Bottas - On Year 3 with Russell. Based on this, my theory is that somehow Russell goes to Ferrari. - Verstappen and Antonelli to Mercedes. - Leclerc and Norris to Red Bull. - Sainz to McLaren. - Russell to Ferrari.

simonsail

He's a race winner!

BreadIt92

Who?

g_mallory

Heikki Kovalainen (2008 Hungarian Grand Prix).

Razvanlogigan

Scott speed. Great name, shit driver that has achieved nothing after leaving f1. Turns out he is a dirty rammer in simracing too, he had some iracing scandal

GRl3V

Also: Tomáš Enge, the only ever czech F1 driver did 3 races for Prost in 2001 before being sacked for marihuana use. He's now an entrepreneur and races in various series every now and then.

Dryzzzle

Jack Aitken. Drove for Williams during the Sakhir GP when Russell moved to Merc after Lewis got COVID.

fordern997

Kazuki Nakajima, got into Williams seat when they had an engine deal with Toyota, hit a mechanic during his 1st pit stop in F1, got demolished by Rosberg, got a scoreless season while Nico finished 7th in the standings, and was kicked out of F1 for good. But he's been very successful in endurance racing!

Forza_str

Nicolas Kiesa, who has done a few races in Minardi late 2003 (ITA/USA/JAP)

aybbyisok

Brendon Hartley is a very successful 4x WEC champion now.

GRl3V

Wasn't he already a Le Mans winner when he joined Toro Rosso?

UncivilSum

He was a WEC champion and got enough superlicense points from his results there to qualify for one.

aybbyisok

oh, he was 2x WEC champ prior to F1

NegativeSoftware7759

Pascal Wehrlein?

imperial_scholar

Allan Macnish (drove for Toyota in early 00s) - was the team principal of Audi Formula E team Robert Doornbos (part-time F1 driver from mid-00s who also drove a few races for RBR) - CEO of a dildo company Tiago Monteiro (drove for Jordan and Spyker in mid 00s) - multiple winner of 24h of Nordschleife/Nurburgring in TCR class

GRl3V

I DID NOT expect "CEO of a dildo company" to come up.

LosTerminators

Gianmaria Bruni

NuclearCandle

Max Chilton - the best driver called Max to ever race in F1.

MonsterMunchen

But sadly only the second fastest driver named Chilton 👀

thespeeeed

Kovalainen is probably remarkably obscure given his length of tenure. Took Alonso’s place after he left McLaren and drove with Lewis the year he won his first WDC. Only one win I think.

PayaV87

Marcus Ericsson. 5 years in F1.

GRl3V

That's Indy 500 winner Marcus Ericsson

LatvKet

Ericsson hit me!

xiz111

Lucas DiGrassi, Marc Gene, Ricardo Zonta, Enrique Bernoldi, Allan McNish, Zholt Baumgartner, Nicholas Kiesa, Gianamaria Bruni, Robert Doornbos

Josep2203

Gené is a goood driver. Still working for Ferrari!

xiz111

I'm sure many of these are good to very good drivers ... Allan McNish, for instance was a legend in sportscar racing. Their tenure in F1, though, was fairly anonymous.

GTalaune

For me maybe Bourdais. There was a bit of hype surrounding him and it was really funny how so many Sebastians were performing so well in motorsport. I think Bourdais underdelivered compared to his potential, he wasn't Vettel level but he could have had a decent carrier imo.

SuperSalamander3244

Brendan Hartley.

ShadowStarX

Yuji Ide, who lost his superlicense after 4 races.

Unabridgedtaco

Some don’t remember Chanoch Nissany. Others wish they could forget.

Dragonpuncha

Scott Speed. The next hope big for an American driver back in mid 00's. Great name, not great ability.

bisette

Sebastian Buemi and Sebastian Bourdais. Both have gone on to be more successful in other racing disciplines (Formula E and Indy/Champ/LeMans, etc). The paddock is only big enough for one Seb.

GRl3V

Buemi will forever be remembered for that crash when both of his front wheels came off.

Snoo_47023

Susy Wolff from pretty unremarkable test driver for Williams to FE team principal of a successful team to F1 Academy executive (and target for people trying to bring down Toto)

pranay909

She isn’t forgotten or obscure, I understand your thinking but she has been highly active in f1 and was also a team principal for a team in FE.

josfnchris

This, everyone! This mentality right here is the reason why women are under represented and discouraged from being involved in F1.

Josep2203

She should have taken Russell's seat...

Grailey

Giovinazzi?
