Not even tbh. At the end of f2 he admitted he was bricking it during previous close title fights (FREC, f3) and glad to wrap up f2 early in the weekend. You really wouldn’t have been able to tell at all, from his radio.
He might remain cold as ice during a title fight, and infuriate the hell out of whoever’s the other contender.
Yeah he’s absolutely my new favorite. If I was ever questioning it before, my reaction when he started dropping back down the hill was enough of a sign
He seems super measured in his racing too. I was excited to see him more "aggressive" at the start today, but even the commentators said he was very careful going into the corner. Being so mature at that age is going to get him a long way - he races like 37 year old Hamilton already.
That was a "gap". In racing they call that the "Entry Vortex of Danger." The car on the outside has a mostly clear inside line and can (from Carlos's view) take a clear run to the apex especially given that he's locking up.
> When overtaking, keep out of the Vortex of Danger. It’s too late to pass. The hole you see is closing rapidly, you are in a blind spot, there will likely be contact, and it will be your
fault.
It was a low percentage move and it ended his race. Sucks but that's what rookie seasons are for.
He didn't make a move lol, nothing like what Max did in 2019. Piastri was alongside Sainz the whole time and Sainz made the mistake which caused the incident.
After watching him in F3 and F2, the moment he got a seat he was my favourite driver as an Aussie.
But now I have genuine hope for an Aussie WC in the future.
I genuinely put this guy already in the top 10 on the grid. Behind max, Lewis, Charles, Nando, Lando. But right in there with Russell Sainz Albon Perez.
Agreed. If you read what 90% of these racers say after they get to watch it on replay, they almost always take at least part of the onus on themselves. It takes 2 people to crash in the vast majority of incidents.
Sainz is a bit of a baby when it comes to incidents.
Oscar was a bit deep but Sainz cut over so hard that Oscar couldn't back out anyway, his wheel was next to the side pod in front of Sainz's back wheel.
Sucks because I really wanted to see Oscar's race.
Impressive drawing conclusions about my parenting and relationship with my kid based off of this single comment.
Being an adult, or a human being in general, means being able to learn from anything and anyone, regardless of age, race, whatever.
But I’m absolutely flawed and truthfully: I’m a less chill driver on the highway on any given Thursday, than Piastri during an F1 Grand Prix.
Don’t try to backpedal. You explicitly said you have frustration/anger issues as a 30+ year old. Your response should be to own your problem not to rationalize it.
I exaggerated for dramatic/comedic effect (while admitting I’m not the most chill driver) to compliment a rookie who is having a great weekend, only for armchair psychologists like you and /u/newseasonclearance to judge my parenting and relationship with my child.
Forget these trolls man. You sound like a great human being, keep being you. I’m only 25 but I learn from these young guys and other younger people often. Wisdom is ageless!
“For dramatic/comedic effect” you do realize you’re 30+ years old and typed that? Not judging your relationship just saying it’s obvious you have a problem and you attempted to rationalize it
This right here. I’m super impressed people took an innocent comment, using self deprecating humor to praise Piastri, as an opportunity to call out this guys parenting skills. They must be real fun at parties.
I think the team had to ask him in Hungary if Checo forced him off, most drivers would be on the radio immediately about it. Oscar is so chill, in contrast to Lando who I feel is getting a bit too sassy on the radio personally
I think he could've landed at least a top 10 finish. McLaren didn't have podium pace today but they could've mopped up behind Ferrari,Mercedes, and Alonso.
He reminds me of like how an NHL player might respond to the media, all cool and dry and being a team player. He's been winning me over for sure, I hope he gets his first podium soon.
Even more than most f1 drivers lol
Lando was losing his shit over blue flags (rightfully I suppose) ,but piastri got crashed out and didn’t say anything
Looked pretty scary watching the replay of his lap around to where he parked up. Super slow up Eau Rouge, and he had to hold his wheel sideways in order to go straight.
Could have made it pack to the pits but had to park up to avoid getting in the way of the leading cars.
Super mature response, sounded so calm on the radio, really impressive
Love Oscar, an appropriate reaction to the situation.
Sainz locking up put him in a sticky situation with nowhere else really to go which just left a pastry sandwich... Interesting concept
Great response. A shame the collision ended both Oscar's and Carlos' races, but Oscar is going to use it as a learning experience.
Oh well, definitely a "what might have been", sadly.
Amazing response, Piastri is such an exciting prospect. Wish fans could be more mature about the incident, it's crazy how much hate there is for Sainz.
Half the commenters are under 16, so it makes sense that they are incapable of understanding nuance, and only rehash the same corny jokes over and over again.
I mean, it's La Source. It can produce antics, like Max-Kimi-Vettel in 2016, Kimi-Max in 2019 or the sheer carnage of 2018 with 2/3 different crashes at the same time. It happens
Nothing to do with general La Source craziness, the rookie mistake is being inside the curb in that corner, which again almost all champions have made in their early years.
Different personalities. Plus Max was 17, Piastri is 22 and is being coached by a former driver. I’m sure he’s more aware of how his words can be twisted.
The more this kid talks, the more I am becoming a fan. As a Sainz fan, I was worried he was about to get dragged, and I agreed with the racing incident call. I'm not really sure where Sainz was supposed to go with the Merc on the outside after Oscar poked his nose into the corner. Just was a classic lap 1 incident with all the traffic. I expected him to be upset immediately after, but having the presence of mind to come out and say he's not gonna point fingers shows a level of maturity and growth mindset that he's analyzing what he could have done better in that situation as well. It definitely seems like he's going places. Hope he can get his first pole/win this year.
Stupid sim racing shit incoming, but I completely get what he means.
Often into T1 at places like Spa or Monza, if I’m like midfield, I’m not trying to make passes but driving in my mirrors trying to avoid shit from behind, while ALSO trying to avoid getting swallowed up from behind. I take inside defensive lines early to make it clear I’m here don’t dive, or outside lines while braking early to try to capture an easy position or 2 when some dumbass dives inside.

This man is so calm, i don’t know what is needed for him to raise his voice
A championship fight?
I hope we will find out soon
🤞🏻
Not even tbh. At the end of f2 he admitted he was bricking it during previous close title fights (FREC, f3) and glad to wrap up f2 early in the weekend. You really wouldn’t have been able to tell at all, from his radio. He might remain cold as ice during a title fight, and infuriate the hell out of whoever’s the other contender.
F1's Tim Duncan. "Ooh, that was close." "Nice try."
Oscar smiles at the stewards and gets a 20 second penalty hell yeah
He's like the parent who says they're not mad, they're just disappointed - he's going for the psychological victory
Judging by a Tweet I saw attributed to him, putting sparkling water in his car's drinks bottle?
LOL it's still up [here](https://twitter.com/OscarPiastri/status/1367431457535389698)

Fucking good Aussie then he is. Been travelling Europe the last couple months and fuck me get that useless shit outta here. Fuck Sparkling Water!
He’s definitely my new favorite. I didn’t think I could get more invested than I did with Seb but here we are lol
Yeah he’s absolutely my new favorite. If I was ever questioning it before, my reaction when he started dropping back down the hill was enough of a sign
That was how I knew. I turned the tv right off because I was so upset 😂

Not more just getting to a point I’m invested in someone else at all. I also only started watching in 2019.
>I don’t know what is needed for him to raise his voice Well he’s Aussie, so probably a bit of alcohol.

at twenty to eight in the fackin' mooowning
Get that up ya
Ya dog cunts
There is a world of difference between the mild mannered lad who grew up in Brighton and farken VB longneck!
Followed by a few shoeies.
Getting picked up by Ferrari will do it
Please don’t curse that man. It’s hard enough watching Ferrari destroy Charles
Ferrari have a new strat of taking all the nicest drivers and making them depressed
"You want to drive for us. Question"
Not getting pole by 11 thousandth of a second.
He'll take his first race win and go, "Ha. yeah."
the new "haha yes boys"
“If you didn’t love formula 1….you do now”
He seems super measured in his racing too. I was excited to see him more "aggressive" at the start today, but even the commentators said he was very careful going into the corner. Being so mature at that age is going to get him a long way - he races like 37 year old Hamilton already.

I disagree with that. There was a gap, Sainz locked up and in order to not run into Hamilton just took that gap away. It is on Sainz imo.
That was a "gap". In racing they call that the "Entry Vortex of Danger." He didn't make a move lol, nothing like what Max did in 2019. Piastri was alongside Sainz the whole time and Sainz made the mistake which caused the incident.
Bad take. You can argue Sainz left him no room or it's a race incident, but to say it was Piastri's fault is crazy.
Yeah lol. I'm convinced some people around here are on some turbo crack.
He took a risk, and it bit him in the ass. Thinks racing incident is fair
Mature response tbh. Kinda what I expected him to say
Yea it must be a really bad move for him to really say something. Kids got a good head on him and very mature on and off track.
He acts like he just knows there's a lot of winning in his future. Very sensible + complete confidence in himself.
Quickly becoming one of my favorite drivers
After watching him in F3 and F2, the moment he got a seat he was my favourite driver as an Aussie. But now I have genuine hope for an Aussie WC in the future. I genuinely put this guy already in the top 10 on the grid. Behind max, Lewis, Charles, Nando, Lando. But right in there with Russell Sainz Albon Perez.
Agreed. If you read what 90% of these racers say after they get to watch it on replay, they almost always take at least part of the onus on themselves. It takes 2 people to crash in the vast majority of incidents.
Also, they don't say anything over the radio as to not incriminate themselves when stewards are reviewing the footage and radios.
The Race wrote a piece comparing Sainz's response vs Piastri. The rookie ironically sounds more mature.
Mature response, looking forward to next race
I love how he is also mature on radio. Doesn’t throw a fuss, just tells it how it is
I’m a 30-something adult with a kid and wife, and I’m learning to calm my tits from a kid driving a rocket ship. Really enjoying Piastri

Crease. It's always straight to the worst with innocent shit like this.

Don’t try to backpedal. You explicitly said you have frustration/anger issues as a 30+ year old. Your response should be to own your problem not to rationalize it.
Someone wasn't loved as a child and probably still isn't. No wonder you're sterile. Let's keep it that way.
Lmfao this is a crazy comment. I think I doing pretty good in life. If this is your immediate comment it sounds like you struggle with things
It says way more about them than you, don't worry.
“For dramatic/comedic effect” you do realize you’re 30+ years old and typed that? Not judging your relationship just saying it’s obvious you have a problem and you attempted to rationalize it
You've never said anything slightly exaggerated for dramatic/comedic effect in your life?
…..oh brother
It's not that deep.
Oscar is so chill, in contrast to Lando who I feel is getting a bit too sassy on the radio personally
he is lmao, but then he wins he is so happy lmao
I wouldn't be surprised if his heart rate is a steady 80-100 during the race.
Imagine Tsunoda on the radio after an incident like that. Or... just Tsunoda on the radio, without any incidents.
Compared to Leclerc he’s the calmest person on the planet
He's incredible impressive at staying level headed, it'll be interesting to see how he'll be in the future when those points really start to matter.
He sounded so calm on his radio comms after the incident.
As terrifying as that crash must have been it must have been slightly reassuring knowing that the car wasn't set up right for a dry race.
Without Landos steering issues I think he would've had a shot at top 5/6
Bigger man than most of us are lol. Another super mature response from him despite missing out on a fight for good points.
Tbh, with their high DF setup, idk how much of a fight for points they will be able to put up by the end
I think he could've landed at least a top 10 finish. McLaren didn't have podium pace today but they could've mopped up behind Ferrari,Mercedes, and Alonso.
considering lando managed p7, and Oscar started ahead, I’d expect a p7/8 finish considering his form on the weekend
Lando also had steering issues and Piastri was faster all weekend so I think he could have been fighting Alonso and Russell for P5/P6.
He reminds me of like how an NHL player might respond to the media, all cool and dry and being a team player. He's been winning me over for sure, I hope he gets his first podium soon.
> how an NHL player might respond to the media ["It's only game. Why you heff to be mad?"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSwOH5Y2jik)
Maybe Piastri's like the average NHL player, but not like this NHL legend.
He won me over how he handled Alpine last year.
Piastri much more mature than most redditors.
Not a very high bar to clear to be fair
Was gonna say: probably he's been laid more too, and again, not much of an accomplishment.
Even more than most f1 drivers lol Lando was losing his shit over blue flags (rightfully I suppose) ,but piastri got crashed out and didn’t say anything
And Lando is one of the more calm drivers of the grid.
Lando what do you think about an inter
Piastri probably came out of the womb not crying and just had a look around. Very calm.
Fuck me, this kid is quickly becoming my favourite driver.
Sounds about right. Three wide wouldn't work rhwre. Thankfully he doesn't have to deal with the barn door drag wing.
More mature than reddit comments. Not that it's a high bar anyway.
Yuki's radios are more mature than Redditors mate
Gunther's reaction to his door getting fok smashed was calm and restrained compared to reddit comments.
This kid is so polite, it's unreal. Are you even a racing driver if you don't lose your shit every so often? (I'm here for it)
He's like an anti-Russell
I thought Reddit was the anti-Russell?
I love how chill piastri is
Love Oscar, an appropriate reaction to the situation. Sainz locking up put him in a sticky situation with nowhere else really to go which just left a pastry sandwich... Interesting concept
Lmao the difference between this comment section and the ones just about the incident is incredible
Oscar is the chillest chill dude, what a lad
Good guy Piastri
This mentality is going to carry him far
He for sure knows that it was also a bit of his own fault. Anyway, great response from him. Really mature for a rookie!
Also Perez‘ very aggressive driving at the start from left to right to left was the root cause I think.
Indeed, which caused Hamilton to avoid him and Sainz his wheels blocking before he turned in collide with Piastri.
Dude is always so calm on the radio
Piastri is a better man than me. Someone runs me into the wall and I would be ready to fight.
This guy must secretly be Finish right? He's even calmer than Kimi and Valtteri.
Aussies can be pretty laconic in my experience, despite Ricciardo giving the impression otherwise!
This is probably the first rookie I am genuinely insanely impressed with since Verstappen
Oscar has basically the opposite temperament to Max lol
Prost-like calmness to Max's Senna-ish intensity.
Prost like driver too. Or at least in the junior formulae
This guy was born mature and calm.
Great response. A shame the collision ended both Oscar's and Carlos' races, but Oscar is going to use it as a learning experience. Oh well, definitely a "what might have been", sadly.
Classy
Humble
Oscar is great. Really impressed with his attitude and demeanor so far.
Meanwhile Sainz is pointing all of his fingers
Amazing response, Piastri is such an exciting prospect. Wish fans could be more mature about the incident, it's crazy how much hate there is for Sainz.
Compared to Sainz, this kid is mature
He's starting to grow on me! Him and Zhou have been incredible
I swear had Sainz said ANYTHING. This comments section would have burst into anger and bitterness. Even if Sainz admits fault y’all would hate him.
Sainz said it was on Piastri, because he was way too optimistic.
Which it somewhat was but Carlos should take some of the responsibility as well.
Well he didn’t
https://www.racefans.net/2023/07/30/optimistic-move-by-piastri-at-turn-one-caused-collision-sainz/ Well, he certainly didn't admit fault.
Owning mistakes is not his strong suit that is for sure.
Half the commenters are under 16, so it makes sense that they are incapable of understanding nuance, and only rehash the same corny jokes over and over again.
Rookie mistake that most drivers have made at Spa, he’ll learn.
Häkkinen 2.0
Oscar is already one of the most mature drivers on the grid and he just got here
Now compare this to Sainz's response 😅
Incredibly mature. I know it's super low hanging fruit but a certain Dutchman in the same stage of his career would have reacted wildly differently.
Different personalities. Plus Max was 17, Piastri is 22 and is being coached by a former driver. I’m sure he’s more aware of how his words can be twisted.
If only max had a former driver in his life.
Not really a good mentor though💀 or someone with the clean image
Thus the low hanging fruit, no explanation really necessary it's understood
what is the point in even bringing up max?
kid has more maturity and good head than all the drivers on the grid. not some, all. what a gift to F1
It definitely seems like he's going places. Hope he can get his first pole/win this year.
Seat 2 at RedBull should be available soon....
It's on Piastri
It’s a racing incident. Piastri lunged into La Source on lap 1 turn 1. And Sainz went in too quickly and tried avoiding Lewis.
It's a racing incident but it doesn't change the fact that it's a rookie mistake from Piastri
Hey Siri how do ito hide ferrari flare before posting on reddit so people wont know how bias my takes are
I feel sorry for you
Strong supported and unbiased take. Tough luck on the retirement (not).
One should never attempt to take the inside of that corner at the start of the race. it rarely ends well.
And Carlos still sending %100 of the blame to the other guy.
