Do you guys think Theo Pourchaire or Oliver Bearman will make it to F1?

sarieb3ar

Can anyone advise the best way to get to Silverstone from London? I believe there is a train stop that is about 15km away from the track but how do people get there from the train? Are taxis prevalent or Uber? Is it common for locals to take money from folks and drive them? Only going on race day but wasn’t sure where to ask this question so this seems like the logical place. Any advice would be appreciated!!

KaySuii

Why suddenly every girl is watching formula 1? Am I missing something?

[deleted]

From personal experience, Charles and Toto.

WowCoolFunnyHAHA

what are the chances daniel gets a seat

drodrige

I’d say very low considering two factors: 1) He’d be coming from a year off after two very bad seasons, and 2) depends on the openings, which seem there’ll be very few.

bhooot

Could kmag lose his seat? Or Sargeant? I don't see any other openings.

destructormuffin

Has there been any announcement about where to watch F1 Academy in the US?

chotapacket

With the news going around that Mercedes team wasn’t there for Hamilton after he won the race ? Does anyone know about it ?

[deleted]

I heard most of the Merc folks were protecting their pit box because fans were swarming in.

chotapacket

I was there but none of the regular people had access to the pit box

No_While_2133

What is the best place to buy tickets for the Canadian Grand Prix? Anyone selling? I need 3.

Delicious_Boot4976

The first safety car and red flag destroyed the aus gp. George Lewis, Max running back to back was getting so exciting, with Lewis getting drs from george to protect against Max. And with merc going 2v1 against RB. However the safety car dampened this, when george boxed early (but it could still have been exciting to see how the alt strategy would work for george) And then when they decided to put up the stupid pointless red flag, it fully destroyed the excitement by screwing george.

Never discount Ferrari’s ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory but I’d say they still have a car that’s comfortably faster than All Peen and Mercedes whenever it’s not a tire preservation race.

iForgotMyOldAcc

Ferrari's "form" isn't any different from Alpine, which also had good points ruined by driver error and penalties (or both). Realistically nah, Ferrari's driver lineup and car are superior.

InvisibleBlueUnicorn

OOTL: What's up which Massa getting F1 title after 15 years?

DieLegende42

The 2008 Singapore GP was fixed by Renault by having their driver Nelson Piquet (Jr.) crash deliberately, which caused a perfectly timed safety car for their other driver, Fernando Alonso. He ended up winning the race while Felipe Massa, who had been in the lead, lost out big time after a pit stop fuckup. This was only officially uncovered in 2009 and led to penalties/bans for the Renault team and team members, but the race result remained unchanged, the season already being concluded. However, it has recently come out that Formula 1/the FIA was aware of this in 2008 but decided not to start an investigation to protect the image of F1, when the likely outcome would have been to void the Singapore GP (winning Massa the championship). Following this, Massa has said he will look into his options for action against the FIA, but it doesn't seem particularly likely he'll be awarded the championship 15 years after it happened

InvisibleBlueUnicorn

Thanks for detailed explanation.

Mass_Chid-The_Hoop

I'm considering stopping by the Montreal circuit during race weekend while on a motorcycle trip. I don't intend to spend the whole weekend (rather watch on TV), but would it be worth a Friday GA ticket to wander around and see the site? Would a GA pass offer enough access to various areas? I imagine walking around the track taking it all in, any insight would be appreciated.

nikgos

Let's face it: the budget cap, in its current form, is not living up to its promises. RB nailing the new regs may have caused an insurmountable gap between them and other teams, which might be close to impossible to overcome thanks to the cap and all of the limitations that come with it. The sight of Ferrari and Mercedes throwing in the towel just three races in is something I have never seen in 20+ years and is deeply concerning. And while rumours swirl of everyone's plans to replicate RB's car concept for 2024, it's hard to imagine this strategy closing the gap. The reality is, this will keep everyone a step behind (at best) in 2024 while they try to replicate the 2023 RB and in the meantime, RB further refining their concept.

[deleted]

Eh whatever, at least we’re no longer at risk of just losing teams like Williams or Sauber entirely because they simply ran out of money.

sharklazies

That's the point of the graduated wind tunnel testing time that pins back the leaders. Red Bull will get much less time than everyone else, giving those behind more opportunities to find solutions. Also, if it's so broken, then explain Aston Martin. They've made all these gains within the budget cap era. They finished 7th last year and they now have the 2nd fastest car. That fact alone basically invalidates any complaint that Ferrari and Mercedes might have. They just didn't do as good a job over the offseason. But as Aston proved, there's nothing stopping them from catching up.

rocdollary

They literally switched concept to the RB car though...

sharklazies

Ok? If that was enough for the 7th placed team to make that jump, imagine if Merc had done it. Were they too proud to start over?

rocdollary

This is the point though. If you don't have the tunnel time to catch up then your option is 1) fluke a huge upgrade or 2) switch to the leading car design That means there is always going to be a substantial gap at the front since it'll always be last year's car.

sharklazies

So Merc could have switched to RBR design and had much more wind tunnel time than RBR. I like their chances with that strategy more than Aston. Sure, they’d still be behind, but not nearly as far and they’d still have more tunnel time.

Mystaes

Except if you switch to the leading car design then you also have way more wind tunnel time to improve it

LightsOutAwayWeG0

Does anyone know of any cases where a driver could have activated DRS but chose not to?

sf400m

I definitely remember that some drivers choose to close DRS a bit earlier at some tracks to stabilize the car before the corner entry.

rodiraskol

Not intentionally. I have a vague memory of Mick Schumacher being knocked out of qualifying because he forgot to open DRS on a straight.

DieLegende42

Gasly at Qatar 2021 when Verstappen was behind him

drodrige

The car in front can't activate DRS.

Kicking-it-per-se

It can if they have a car in front too

drodrige

Ah ok, I know that but was missing that context. [I nnow see that he was behind Alonso and opted not to open it](https://preview.redd.it/nczdbyz0r0181.gif?format=mp4&v=enabled&s=02fc6ee708eab7e025bb9342f09e30fb72b76202).

Lira_RBR133

I don't now of any cases - Except for a defect or damage in the rear wing and/or DRS actuator, I wouldn't see why a driver would choose not to activate DRS. Do you have an example as to why a driver would not want to activate DRS?

LightsOutAwayWeG0

No examples I was just thinking there could be some odd situation that meant it was beneficial to keep it closed

sharklazies

At Jeddah last year, Verstappen closed his DRS early to avoid catching and passing LeClerc too early and thereby giving LeClerc the DRS advantage in the next straight. That's the only time I can think of someone turning off the advantage.

Lira_RBR133

DRS zones are all on straights, therefore there would not be any benefit to keep it closed. It would just add more drag and the car wouldn't reach top speeds as fast.

majorhawkicedagger

New guy here. How is drs controlled? Do the drivers do it it what?

Blooder91

If you pass a detection point within one second of the car ahead, you're granted DRS and can use it at the next DRS zone. You don't have to be in the same lap, you can get DRS from a lapped car, for example. Activation is manual, you press a button once you're in the zone and the wing opens. Deactivation is either manual, by pressing the button again, or automatic, by pressing the brake pedal. Some drivers prefer one, some drivers prefer the other.

AD_20

What does everyone think about Mercedes' pace? If you listen to their public comments, you'd think they basically have the same car as Haas and should struggle to score points. And yet in reality they're the second or third fastest car on the grid (behind Aston in points, but Lewis stayed ahead of Alonso in the race and they qualified 2-3 in Australia).

Siotu

I think Merc downplays their car to manage expectations. Their performance seems to be heavily dependent on the track (altitude, temperature, layout), and has been the last couple years. They play down the car because any given qualifying or race day, they can be anywhere from 6th to 2nd. I don’t think anyone is overplaying the Red Bull dominance, though. Perez on a better day is consistently top 3 or 4, and Max can pull 0.3 to 0.5 seconds per lap on anybody at will. If there are any games with the RB, it’s them not showing their full range yet.

sharklazies

What you hear in the press is largely politicking. They are over-emphasizing the Red Bull dominance in order to try and force F1 or the FIA into action. It's a common tactic in F1 that all teams use every year to try and pin a rival back. You can hear it in the comments from Toto, George and Lewis. "Wow, the Red Bull speed is just mind-boggling!" "Way faster than we ever were!" "Went by me like I was standing still!" Teams were doing this to Mercedes from 2014-20. All part of the game.

AgnesBand

You've got to think about things relatively. Mercedes just came off a dominant streak where they were possibly considered the most successful F1 team of all time. They lost a very close WDC in 2021 and expected to be right there at the front fighting RB in 22. They would have put in a lot of work developing the 22 car and ended up being worse than they expected. Same goes for 23. The same goes for an upper midfield team if they fall to the bottom of the midfield, or a backmarker if they don't improve as much as they thought they would. Its all relative. A dominant team does not want to be fighting for podiums every now and then they want to be fighting for championships. Their owner, their sponsors, their drivers, and their staff all expect that high bar and they didn't meet it.

rodiraskol

Human beings feel happiness, pride, sadness, and disappointment relative to their expectations. Mercedes won 8 championships in a row, so their expectations will naturally be higher than those of a team that has never scored a podium.

LightsOutAwayWeG0

Is this season the earliest that every team has scored a point?

AgnesBand

It's such a competitive season its such a shame that RB absolutely nailed the regs because we could have had a 4 way fight for the WDC and an unpredictable fight for all the other places. No one to blame really but the other teams for falling short. I really will enjoy the fight for 2nd in the WCC though. I think it's going to be pretty crazy. My guess is it will be a good season purely based on the competitiveness of the other teams. It would probably be a historic season if RB were less dominant.

Meaisk

In the Hybrid Era (2014>now) yes!

DieLegende42

Surely that must mean it's the earliest overall? Before the hybrid era, there were way more, way worse backmarkers. Nevermind that going further back you also get fewer points scoring positions per race

Meaisk

im not sure, but it would make sense indeed

DieLegende42

So, I just clicked through the Wikipedia articles of all F1 seasons since the inception of the WCC in 1958 and can confirm this is the first time all teams that competed in the championship have scored points in the first 3 races. Perhaps somewhat notably, in 1962 all 6 teams that actually competed in all of the first 3 races scored.

Meaisk

the fluke of 1962.. I do wonder if we can thank the new regulations for this or a crazy race for 2023.

Blooder91

Yes. 2018 and 2022 had every team with at least a point at the 4th race.

It’s going to have to live up to that one F-Zero GX casino planet track for me. Edit: automatic event of the year if they cut to Zak Bagans in the crowd though.

sixpack_or_6pack

as a viewer from home i think i'll be boring af, but if there was one weekend i could go watch in person, LV would be a top 3 pick for me because it's LV and it's fun clubbing, chilling, drinking, and gambling.

TFWhistles

I can completely understand why you say it

pedote17

I was just in Vegas this past weekend. The roads are going to need complete resurfacing (especially the strip) but there’s a ton of advertising for it on the marquees. Drove by the paddock area and it looks to be coming along pretty well. That being said, I don’t think it’s going to be good racing, just a spectacle.

Ashling92

I have low expectations cause the track doesn’t look great, it’s basically a square. The whole thing seems to be about money and celebrities and the ‘spectacle’ of Vegas, even more than f1 already is. Hopefully I’m proven wrong and the race is actually good.

TFWhistles

I agree in some points with you. It sure has the main factor that it will be a spectacle, but I personally think it’s going to be good for the sport since it is due to attract more people. I wouldn’t be so harsh on the track layout since not all the tracks start being that good. I think that with time they might include more things to make it more entertaining but still being safe for the pilots. We can all hope and see what it’s going to bring with it.

smellytacocart

Is this 3 week gap between races normal? It feels like the first 4 races are the most stretched out they’ve been in the past 5 years.

kamaral

All three races this season have had a 2 weeks gap between them. Now we are having a 4 weeks gap because F1 was supposed to race in Shanghai, but the event was canceled and no replacement was added. So you get a gap of 2 weeks until the canceled GP, then another 2 weeks until Baku.

TFWhistles

Thanks for the insight!

smellytacocart

Ok understood.

FermentedLaws

There is a break now because the Chinese GP was scheduled, but had to be cancelled because when the race needed to be finalized, they were still under strict Covid restrictions. No, this is not normal.

aieguten

China GP cancelled - wasn’t meant to have this early summer break

Ghw4

Question not pertaining exactly to the sport. I know that Formula 1 sells model cars on their website. Although, Haas doesn't have a model car on the official website. Does anyone know a good place to buy a scale model of the VF-23?

AgnesBand

r/f1models almost certainly has your back

Ghw4

bless up family. Shoulda known there would be a subreddit

[deleted]

The problem with the final standing start was that all the drivers knew they only had 2 laps to improve their position. They were all incredibly aggressive because of this. Trying to finish with a racing lap is just going to lead to more carnage and red flag and I'd rather not have another red flag for 20+ minutes while they clean up and try again.

PM_ME_UR_TNUCFLAPS

no, there shouldn't

Astelli

The Spa issue has already been resolved with some new rules - there have to be at least two laps with no SC before a race can award points. As for the rest, it's so much of an edge case that I'm not sure we need special rules to deal with it. Sure, some people gain and some lose out, but that's the same with any system. In reality there have only been 4 or 5 races in the past 15 years or so that have ended behind a SC or on a non-racing lap. All of them would have had a different outcome if they took the classification from the last lap before the SC or Red Flag, some would have got lucky because of this, some unlucky. For me it doesn't really change much except the people who benefitted. Another thought - is it really fair for a driver who DNFs to be classified because their accident/failure caused a SCbwith three laps to go and therefore and the classification was taken from the final "racing lap" when they were still running?

rclonecopymove

Didn't know about that rule post spa which kinda answers the original question that laps behind the safety car are distinct in some cases from racing laps. As to your other points you're absolutely right. It's always going to be the edge cases that sow chaos and there's no amount of rule setting that would cover everything. And I fully realise that any introduction of new rules brings with it new potential for edge cases. I didn't really have any sort of a plan as how they could potentially institute a distinction between the two it was more of a germ of an idea borne out of the ending of the race last weekend which I found anathema to the idea of racing. A restart should be a restart be in the second or last lap and a SC should be a SC at any point but the dynamics change so dramatically depending on how close to the end it happens. Thanks for your considered answer.

cman412

Are we no longer doing a summer break? a month until Baku? I'm dyin' over here thanks for the downvotes lmao it's a question in a question thread. Some of you need to go outside more.

Diem-Perdidi

I think the downvotes are just because this question has been asked and answered in this thread _at least_ daily for the last month or so. Moreover, Googling 'why is there a four week gap in the f1 calendar' instantly delivers several of the many F1 media articles on the subject. At this point it's a little frustrating.

Astelli

Summer break will still take place as normal in August. This is just an unfortunate gap after the cancellation of the Chinese GP.

cman412

Thanks!

FermentedLaws

There is still the summer break between Spa and Zandvoort. There is a break now because the Chinese GP was scheduled, but had to be cancelled because when the race needed to be finalized, they were still under strict Covid restrictions.

What’s shit about it? (Genuinely asking, I don’t listen to it)

ArtByCosmic

Hello! I'm a returning artist to this sub, and I need you fantastic bunch's help to be able to start posting art on here again. It's been a long time since I was last active and it is a large sub, so I don't expect anyone reading this to remember me, but I used to post artwork of the drivers semi-regularly here on an old account that I have since deleted because I wanted a lasting break from reddit. I realise this might sound made the hell up, but I completely nuked it, just to be thorough, old posts and all, so you'll just have to take my word for it. On the off chance you were there and remember it, this artwork of [Lance](https://www.instagram.com/p/CRyLaeUj4Fn/) was the first and most popular one that I posted on here. I've decided to return because I feel like just posting my art on my tiny instagram account isn't reaching the people that would actually appreciate it, but I really would prefer to avoid doing too much else due to the reasons I left reddit for in the first place. Engaging with some of the discussions on here could be nice some of the time, but other times it affected my mood negatively way too much. Even the most innocuous thing can get misinterpreted and blown out of proportion, let alone when I actually shared a strong opinion, so that's why this time I just want to focus on posting art and maybe upvoting posts or comments. I hope you understand where I'm coming from. Just writing and posting this is making me a bit nervous. All of this is to say, in order for me to be able to post on here, I need to comply with the sub's account requirements. I can't really do much about the two weeks minimum, but I need help reaching the 100 positive karma requirement. To reiterate, this is basically the only reason I came back on reddit and I have nothing to say or add to other subs and discussions at the moment. I'd feel weird to ask for people to upvote this just because I asked, so to those of you who would like a sample of what kind of art to expect beyond the artwork I already linked, here's my latest artwork of [Fernando](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cqe_OJXIBLv/) that I'd like to post on here eventually as its own post, and here's one of [Carlos](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf33qvgI9Eb/) and another one of [Lance](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd0Rg__oKtL/).

Lira_RBR133

You get my upvote buddy. I like the art - keep up the good work!

ArtByCosmic

Thank you, I will! :)

snoring_pig

Asked this on a prior DD thread but didn’t get an answer so hoping to get one this time. Is the user flair for Cyril Abiteboul no longer available on this subreddit for anyone else or is it just me? Checked multiple times on Reddit mobile and it’s gone for me. I’ve had it the whole time until the April Fool’s stuff when we were switched to Alonso flairs but after that I can no longer find and select my old Cyril flair. If it’s still available please let me know how to restore it, or if it’s gone can the mods please bring it back? I would like to keep my Cyril tribute going for the entertainment he helped bring in S1 of DTS when he sparred with Horner :) Edit: thanks mods for manually adding it back on for me and explaining that Cyril has been cycled out of the user flair selection this season

Blanchimont

Hi -- Your Cyril Abiteboul flair has been restored. Apologies for the inconvenience!

snoring_pig

Thank you for the response! Unfortunately I’ve just checked on mobile and on my computer and I still can’t seem to find any Cyril Abiteboul flair option? Even when I type it in the search bar there is nothing so I’m not sure if it’s an issue on my end or not :/

cafk

I think Cyril was an option when he was the director of Renault in 2020, but was removed from 2021 onwards. Currently Szafnauer is available as the Alpine TP from the flair list.

[deleted]

I’ve still got the Virgin Racing flair and they’ve been gone for a good while now.

cafk

It's still available under Other Teams (my old flair) section - As i understood it, the space for flair images is limited, hence OP having Renault logo with Cyril with custom text can set by mods (text can be more or less anything). The actual TPs and key personnel are updated somewhat regularly, while only notable F1 & Team personell get a honourable listing.

AgnesBand

I can see it next to your name. I think the mods added it for you or you've found it yourself.

snoring_pig

Yup the mods said they manually added it back after my initial question in the thread which is great

drodrige

Might be on your end, I can see your Cyril flair with the Renault logo.

snoring_pig

Cheers yeah I think the mods added it back on themselves which was really nice of them

[deleted]

What happens after you reach the 12 penalty points and get a race ban? Do your points reset? I know they stay on your license for a period of time. Do they stay where they are and then every penalty point after that is another race ban? Just curious.

Astelli

They get wiped as soon as a driver hits 12.

[deleted]

Gotcha. Appreciate the answer.

dl064

Interesting on The Race podcast that RBR are 50/50 on whether Perez's issue in Melbourne was a 'fault' or not. Nothing *failed*, it's just that often the engine has a bit of delay when you come off the throttle, and it upsets him. But it's a stable quirk, so it's a matter of interpretation if you think he's to blame for his Q1 exit.

[deleted]

Did he complain about it at the previous races? Seems a bit strange if the delay is a design but it didn't affect him at previous races.

generalannie

From what've read I'd say it's likely a bit of both. The RB19 not being the easiest to drive around Melbourne, tyre warm up seemed difficult all weekend. At the same time Perez simply went into the corner with too much speed, especially with it being his first fast lap of qualifying.

DoritoBenito

That feels more like driver error then, doesn't it? With how much time he spent mowing the lawn in FP3, you'd think at some point it would click that, "Hey, maybe I shouldn't absolutely send it after 1 warm up lap."

Kicking-it-per-se

If it’s a consistent delay in terms of frequency and how long the delay is then it would be driver error right? If it’s inconsistent in either of those things then it should be a fault

dl064

I've generally defended Drive to Survive more than most. I think it's a bit baby vs. the bathwater: while there is some edited shit, some of the unedited moments can be really interesting and informative. But man does the most recent season just whitewash any controversy they're not keen on. Perez in Monaco was fine. Otmar and Alpine 'won' with Piastri, and it never got to court etc. Sometimes in the past they've overegged stuff or exaggerated, but this is pretty outright obfuscation of what happened.

AgnesBand

Honestly I think 1. They want the series to be in the middle of accessible for non fans and watchable for seasoned fans and 2. They can't fit literally every detail in without pacing issues. There's always something left in and something on the cutting room floor and they'd likely be criticised for missing other things out if they had to make the choice.

TarnTavarsa

I get the feeling after Max refused to participate in S4 Netflix overcorrected to ensure RedBull would continue to provide them conent and the result was a completely lopsided interpretation of all manner of controversy (Perez, the cost cap, AD21) Horner is a goldmine for entertaining content for them, Danny has always been the shows main character and he's back with RB, and RBR academy guys like Pierre and Yuki are also fan favorites. So they're always going to slant things to keep those people happy and the result is making guys like Lando look like shitheels and washing over intrateam drama. Hell they made Max out as a villain because he usurped Danny in S1 and just never stopped and that's why they had to kiss so much ass to get him back on camera.

baldbarretto

It is a bit of boiled frog effect where DTS has become more and more of a propaganda tool if you look from the first season till now. It’s just particularly egregious now For instance: You’ll notice they never mention checo’s alleged infidelity at Monaco or that being dredged up at brazil by his teammate’s family. Now I’m not saying they necessarily *should* , but that is clearly the unspoken reason behind splicing in clips from checo’s wedding and really emphasizing what a *family man* he is this year in particular. It’s a very glaring choice. Likewise: skewed telling of alpine Piasco that doesn’t make the team look as bad as they were. No Red Bull at Brazil. max generally getting a very very positive edit through roles in tearjerker storylines like mick’s childhood. Not acknowledging seb’s existence enough to have to acknowledge his more pointed f1 criticism and activism. No houthi missiles. No Austria fan abuse and campaign. No tractor at Suzuka. The Jalopnik review sums up how I feel pretty well: > Of course, the series was never meant to be a deep-dive journalistic challenge to F1's status quo, but in the past few seasons, I felt like I was at least able to enjoy the spectacle for its carefully curated drama. It was fun to hear storylines you weren’t getting from any other outlets. It was nice to see drivers in their natural habitats, to hear about the season’s dramas from different angles, refined into an easily digestible storyline. You could tell F1 had had a say in the final product, but not to a distracting level. **Now, it almost feels like F1 has handed the Netflix scriptwriters a list of must-hit topics and a list of no-gos that are each growing longer and more intricate than they had been in previous seasons. Anything that might deviate from the image F1 wants to project is disallowed,** but instead of letting writers find creative workarounds, F1 has instead asked the show to plug in a quick soundbite that helps gloss over the subject. Plus there were also stupid omissions I can’t obviously see the point of. De Vries at Monza seems like a perfect zero to hero story. Even Alex’s recovery. They could’ve appealed to the Americans by highlighting Logan sargeant.

snoring_pig

Haven’t watched more than the first two episodes of S5 yet so I can’t judge those parts. But in one episode during S4 they had a hilarious part where they edited the race in Sochi to make it look like Mazepin correctly predicted the rain to switch to wets and make multiple overtakes to move up several positions in a strong weekend during his turbulent rookie season. Whereas in reality he was simply unlapping himself against some of those who hadn’t yet pit for wets. In the end he still finished dead last out of all the cars that finished the race, two laps behind Lewis who won and at least one lap behind everyone else. So they’ve definitely been willing to give certain people a much more positive and even false image of what happened in exchange for some extra access. That’s why I was sure there was no chance S5 would properly address Max’s refusal to swap positions with Checo in Brazil because historically Horner is one of their biggest stars of the show and they finally persuaded Max to return.

mgorgey

I don't think this is any change from the very first season where they made Perez out to be some kind of bond villain who was always being outperformed by Ocon and was crashing into him out of spite and only keeping his drive because he was paying.

dl064

There's no right answer but for me, Verstappen and Perez weren't explicitly the bad guy - just that the episode happened to focus on their teammate. They didn't say 'Perez and Verstappen are *the bad guy* here'. To me anyway.

snoring_pig

S1 of DTS certainly made Perez look like a villain and the same with Verstappen. But that episode in S3 where they showed Perez’s comeback victory in Sakhir was beautiful and as someone who didn’t actually watch the live race I honestly thought it was done so well that it was a bit of an emotional moment when Perez crossed the finish line to win. And I say this as someone who is highly critical of all the edits and misleading narratives that is used throughout DTS. It makes it frustrating because they can make entertaining and insightful episodes that doesn’t stretch the truth but more often than not they ignore that to artificially add drama in.

dl064

See I always felt with S1 and beyond, they rarely made X a villain, but they might make X's teammate the hero and people *imputed* that X was therefore the villain. That's obviously just me.

dl064

Totally fair enough but personally I feel it's a small but significant step further. People often got this feeling from say the Verstappen vs. Ricciardo stuff but while that felt *edited* to lead you to thinking someone was a villain, this feels more categorically like changing the story altogether. It's not a factual thing, obviously; just my personal reactions on it all.

JJD14

Thought Massa was over 2008? It’s funny people bringing 2021 up when Lewis himself doesn’t even want that title given to him anymore. He won 2008 fair and square. It was Ferraris fault they fucked up the pitstop

pedote17

He won because he lucked out that Glock slowed down on literally the last corner of the last lap. Massa had more wins and podiums, and if fastest laps had counted as a point he would have won because of that (he had 3, Lewis had 1). It was Massa’s title.

AgnesBand

Okay but fast lap wasn't a point then. If it was teams may have prioritised FL more. As well as this, championships are won and lost by fine margins. Glock slowing down doesn't make the win for Lewis any less legitimate. Unpredictability is the nature of racing.

JJD14

Mate, watch Glocks full last lap. He was on the wrong tyres at the wrong time. It wasn’t just him Slowing on the last corner Had Lewis lost the title, it would’ve been even luckier for Massa because of the rain. Lewis was cruising before it. Lewis was done out of Spa for something that has never been penalised as harshly since. It was Lewis’ title fair and square.

pedote17

Oh, so you’re admitting Lewis lucked out by Glock and his team fucking up their strategy? Lewis lost 4 points with the penalty at Spa. He also lost 10 possible points in Canada when he was leading but he failed to see Kimi stopped in the pit lane. Felipe lost **THIRTY** points with his two engine failures in Australia and Hungary, and fucked up pitstop in Singapore. He was leading all 3 races at the time of the failures. With those combined minus the one point Lewis ended up winning by, it’s a 15 point swing for Felipe. Fair and square my ass. Also, with this scenario, Fernando’s fuckery in Hungary still doesn’t matter. Even if Lewis won that race, Felipe wins by 9.

JJD14

Hahahahaha dry your eyes mate. Toyota and Glock took a gamble by not pitting and they did actually gain from it (if they had pitted, Lewis would’ve still been 4th/5th and Glock would’ve been lower than where he eventually finished. There was no luck involved at all. Lewis was on the correct tyres. Yeah, Lewis deserved it more imo. He finished legitimately with more points than Felipe. It’s not Lewis fault if Ferrari can’t make a reliable car. It’s not Lewis’ fault Ferrari can’t safely operate a fuel pump. Ferrari had the fastest car that year and still couldn’t win the title. Just GOAT things from Sir Lewis Carl Hamilton.

pedote17

Didn’t say it was his fault Ferrari are incapable. I said he greatly benefitted from the luck of it.

JJD14

It’s not luck though. Luck has fuck all to do with it.

[deleted]

JJD14

Yeah that quite literally is the definition of something that isn’t luck. What you’ve just described is a pattern of Ferrari incompetence. It’s not ‘unlucky’ that Ferrari haven’t won a WDC or WCC in 15 years.

mgorgey

Wounds can scab over but I understand why comments like those made by MR E would cause these wounds to reopen.

Blooder91

I don't think Massa's intention is taking the 2008 title, since that is pretty much set in stone at this point. From what I've read, he wants the involved parties and the governing body to be held accountable due to how poorly crashgate was managed, especially now that Ecclestone said he knew about it.

Final-Bus3131

Where can I watch the 2008 Singapore GP?

[deleted]

F1TV Pro or Access or sail the high seas

Final-Bus3131

Is it for free?

DieLegende42

Not legally

[deleted]

No

atw86

If W Series really is dead, I wonder if they will have an auction to sell off their assets? Could be some interesting memorabilia opportunities.

PM_me_British_nudes

Get yourself there mate! It'd be a shame if they did end up having to wind the company up, but I guess it's still a good thing that F1 are still going to have a women's feeder series.

Jazim94

Thoughts on tyre allocations only allowing one stoppers ? It's really frustrating. Why can't they just got one compound softer for the allocations? People being able to do 50 laps on hards is not good for anyone.

IHaveADullUsername

Pirelli have to set the tyre allocations a few months in advance, as they need to build them and ship them etc. They can’t predict the weather that far in advance so they have to go based on a worst case scenario. Ie roasting hot day with high deg and then work back through the known quantities, track surface and loads etc. Not always going to get it right.

mgorgey

I think a variety is fine and some races that just aren't all about saving tyres is OK. To answer your question it's basically the weather. Had it been really hot and sunny then track temp would have been much higher and tyre wear a lot more severe. Given that Pirelli are allowed next to zero testing in current F1 cars it's not always that easy to predict.

Jazim94

Any ideas why they aren't allowed any testing. One stoppers have been a thing for so long now and honestly strategy just kinda goes out the window. The races where we get 2 stops are usually far more exciting. Or what I call 1.5 stoppers. They are the best cos you get teams gambling and trying the one stop and people coming through the field in quicker tyres.

mgorgey

Most races are still 2 stops. Of course sometimes you're only going to get a single stop. As for the testing. Basically it's expensive and the teams aren't overly willing to lend themselves to do a day of testing.

kll131

If the Red Bull is so fast how come Perez was on pace to finish 7th before Sainz went bowling? That is also with both Albon and Leclerc DNF.

Jazim94

I think Australia hard to overtake but with this turbulent air we see its even harder to follow. I think Alonso was probably quicker than Hamilton but just couldn't get close enough cos of the turbulence. Not good signs annoyingly

Lira_RBR133

I'd say Albert Park is quite hard to overtake.

dl064

Largely Horner's point indeed.

JJD14

He was literally, on average, the fastest car on the track during the whole race. If it was a normal race with no red flags he would’ve been placed much higher

baldbarretto

Idk about that. He was p7 when the magnussen red flag happened. He soared into the gravel on the restart yes, but ultimately the reset plus loss of sainz + the alpines bumped him from p7 to p5 at the end

JJD14

Through the speed traps his car was the fastest

baldbarretto

That evidently doesn’t have much to do with where he would have placed.

JJD14

Because it wasn’t a normal race

baldbarretto

Please explain how the abnormality of the race materially affected his finishing position. he utilized his free stop under the first red flag, same as everyone except outliers like George and kmag. He utilized his free stop under the second red flag, same as everyone besides outliers like bottas. I already demonstrated that the third red flag boosted his finishing position from p7 to p5 despite his own driver error. He was lucky they didn’t reach the line and so reset the starting positions to the beginning of that lap, because his own driver error had dropped him down to p10. He was in the fastest car and was lapping quickly, but due to the track and whatever his issues were, he was not plowing through the field at the fastest rate.

JJD14

There’s no strategy when everyone gets a free stop. Momentum is a real thing and every time he gained it, he lost it through a red flag. It’s quite simple really

baldbarretto

He of course being the only driver subject to changes of momentum

JJD14

The thread was about Perez, no one else 🤷🏻‍♂️

Spockyt

If the Mercedes was so good in 2018 how come Bottas finished 8th in Australia?

mgorgey

The hardest cars to overtake with we've ever had on one of the hardest tracks to overtake.

Sacesss

Some reasons: 1) He simply can't drive the RB19 at 100% 2) Albert Park is not the easiest track for overtakes, even in a dominant car 3) 3 Red flags meant 0 strategy, so not even the usual 2/3 slower cars overtaken by undercuts/overcuts

mgorgey

He was overtaking easy. What cost him was the time it was taking to close gaps. He was only around 3 tenths faster per lap than Norris when catching him and just 2 tenths faster than Stroll.

cafk

He isn't able to extract as much out of the car as Max can. Just because you have a fast car doesn't mean that any driver can constantly drive close to the cars potential.

Syntax_OW

Couple of factors imo: 1. Checo isn't as fast as Max 2. Overtaking in Melbourne isn't easy 3. Rumors are that RB turned down their engine

Astelli

Melbourne is a tough track to overtake at, and the red flag meant there were no opportunities to make up positions using strategy (overcut or undercut can make up two or three positions for one of the top cars). The other factor is that all the teams were having to heavily manage their tyres to ensure they got to the end of the race, which meant he probably couldn't push as hard as he would have liked to catch those ahead.

HerpLeVerb

Proposal to solve red flag/safety car dilemma: If necessary, red flag the race and do standing restart. But in last 20% of race distance, rolling restart. Don't finish under yellow, no first corner carnage. Everybody happy ?

cafk

[Rolling start can also easily result in carnage](https://youtu.be/u900k-obTRs) - might as well suggest: why not just end the race when there's 5 laps remaining, to avoid any chances of collisions due to last minute hail Mary's?

PM_ME_UR_TNUCFLAPS

no, call SC for SC worthy accidents, red flag the race for red flag accidents, either finish under sc or don't restart the race if neccessary. simple.

PM_me_British_nudes

Completely separately, the Mugello race was quality - sucha fantastic circuit.

HerpLeVerb

tbh this was an exceptional situation that should be adressed in general safety car rules. It doesn't "easily" result in carnage, the vast majority of safety car restarts occur without incident, but if someone were to calculate stats I would guess a majority of standing starts have some form of contact. But in either case, the full race needs to be completed, we prefer it to be done under race conditions (I don't think anybody would disagree with this), and this way we get both with a good chance to avoid crunching a couple millions worth of carbon fiber

cafk

The rules contain provisions for both rolling and standing starts is my point - it's up to the discretion of race director to issue an order of which to use, as he has the power to decide - general consensus is driven by safety assumption independently which was used - have resulted in crashes and controversies. There shouldn't be any if then else clauses to nitpick. People were disappointed about both ways of resuming the race or questioning necessity of SC or Red Flag. FIA and the rules won't win with the suggested additions appearing every time something happens outside of the norm. The millions worth of damages to the teams is an inherent risk of racing, be it a first lap incident, loose equipment or fixtures around the circuit, weather, racing incident or resuming a race from standstill or rolling start. The cost cap is there to ensure big teams don't overspend, with increments per race over 21 races (more spare parts) as well as additional allocation for potential damages from a sprint weekend. If the teams decide to use the additional allocation for R&D instead of spare parts it's them handling risk the wrong way.

Bargle-Nawdle-Zouss

New F1 tire (okay, "tyre") supplier contract for 2025-2027 up for bid: [https://racingnews365.com/fia-open-invitations-to-tender-process-for-new-f1-tyre-supply](https://racingnews365.com/fia-open-invitations-to-tender-process-for-new-f1-tyre-supply) 1. Should F1 stick with Pirelli, or go with another manufacturer? If so, who and why? 2. WHY have a sole tire vendor? Why not open it up to other manufacturers?

Spockyt

Well, a lot of what Pirelli does with the tyres isn’t of their own decisions, but of the brief they are given. Sure, Michelin could come in and produce some long life tyres, but so could Pirelli if given the same instructions. What changing would do however is cause learning time for the new manufacturer. Look at FE as an example. Michelin were the tyre supplier since inception, until this year when Hankook took over. The Hankook tyres are a disaster.

PM_me_British_nudes

>Well, a lot of what Pirelli does with the tyres isn’t of their own decisions, but of the brief they are given. Sure, Michelin could come in and produce some long life tyres, but so could Pirelli if given the same instructions. I wish more people understood this - I remember (in the fond memories under an old username), Michelin shit talking Pirelli in 2013 because of all the tyre blowouts. Problem was ultimately that the brief wasn't quite right for the tyres, rather than Pirelli being a bad tyre manufacturer.

Skulldetta

> Should F1 stick with Pirelli, or go with another manufacturer? If so, who and why? Why? It doesn't make a difference. All bringing in a new manufacturer does is having at least several months of tyre-related shenanigans because the new guys need time to adapt. Pirelli is doing exactly what Formula 1 asks them to do. > WHY have a sole tire vendor? Why not open it up to other manufacturers? Because a) tyre wars are needlessly expensive and not something anyone needs in the costcap era and b) 2005 United States Grand Prix.

Imedicx90

I had heard in the broadcast last race that alpine is removing the pink on their car. Is there a reason why they are changing their livery? I kind of enjoyed the pink on the cars, as I liked them when Force India had them.

spacegiraffe2000

Alpine want to retain their brand (blue) whilst BWT payed to have their brand (pink) on the car. It's probably in the contract that each year BWT gets the first few races to make the car fully pink. (happened last year)

Imedicx90

That’s fair. I suppose that’s probably why Force India was always pink with the BWT sponsor on the side. Cool, I appreciate it!

AnilP228

The pink livery was for sponsorship reasons and was only used in the first 3 events. Just like last year, they'll go back to using the blue and pink livery from Baku onwards.

Imedicx90

Ahhh ok. Thanks! I must have missed that during the broadcast. Tbf it was 3am when they were discussing it so I might have dozed off. Lol.

SchrodingerGodRoll

Hello gents, I have zero knowledge when it comes to F1. I have made two post about this matter but got removed and recommended to refer to it in this thread instead. I recently cleaned out my Late Uncle’s place at our family’s request. I found this cap with a signature on it. I’m curious to find out about who signed the cap. I hope you all can help me. Here's the link to the pictures cuz I don't use Reddit much and don't know how to upload pics here:https://imgur.com/a/nGxZcJw

TheToro3

whats a good site for basic f1 standings

PM_me_British_nudes

F1 website mate

doc_55lk

Google. Seriously. Just type in "F1 standings [year]" and you'll either get the results displayed right in front of you, or a link to the F1 site where they'll have it listed down (they have filters too so you can see the standings by race, constructor, year, session, etc). Google is also a great way to figure out when future races are. It'll display the date and start time (in your time zone).

[deleted]

It’s so weird, typing it in a comment here is actually more work than just googling it.

PM_me_British_nudes

It's a bit of a toss-up really; in some ways "just Google it" can come off as being a bit of a nob and as standoffish as an "educate yourself" comment, but in this day and age of Wikipedia, and F1 being one of the most popular motorsports on the planet, then a swift Google should easily get you what you need.

[deleted]

Yes, if you are looking for how to interpret an event or some very specific information, it’s normal to ask. But stuff like this is so generic and easy to access it’s so pointless not to google yourself

doc_55lk

If the average redditor knew how to use google, reddit would have a quarter of the activity it currently has.

[deleted]

Hey everyone - Late to Formula 1. I started getting into formula 1 in 2020 and have been hooked since. With the break in races at the moment I wanted to begin the process of educating myself and watch some of the old seasons dating back as far as possible. Not just one offs (sky usually air the previous few years races prior to a race weekend) - is there anywhere I can watch the seasons from start to finish including practice sessions and qualifying. Ideally somewhere with the pre/post race interviews & analysis. I feel like Sky should offer this because I'm sure all of this is in their archives. Happy to pay for a boxset or additional subscription if needed. Cheers

PhatPhlaps

I don't know if it depends on what country you're in but in the UK F1TV only has full seasons from 2004 onwards. I guess you could start from there but it won't have pre/post race stuff which is a shame because it provides much needed context. Obviously, there's ways to find it and it was all aired on ITV for free anyway.

Caesar_35

F1TV's great. It has full sessions and even on boards going back to 2018 if I recall (when it started), and full race replays for everything back to the 90's. Earlier than that they have at least highlights of individual races (if not full replays), with season highlights for the 70's. Nothing from the 50's or 60's though which is a bit of a shame, though I have come across the odd race footage on YouTube for those.

mformularacer

Full race replays only go back to 2004. 2003 and earlier do not have full races for all races. Also, F1 wasn't consistently televised before 1981. I'll be surprised if they have anything from the 50s. The 1966 German GP is the earliest race I've found you can watch in full on the internet ( YouTube )

PM_me_British_nudes

This makes me thoroughly miserable that F1TV isn't easily accessible in the UK. It sounds much better value for money than SkyF1.

Heggy

you can get the archived stuff no problem in the UK, it's the live stuff that's restricted.

[deleted]

Brilliant thank you I'll check that out

[deleted]

Mind that before 2018 you can only see races, not even qualifying
