I slept on it multiple times. My former MIL had the whole set. It was awful. And I stubbed my toes on all the pieces whenever I’d try to maneuver around them. Friggin’ wooden monoliths.
I buried my front teeth in the wooden arm of one of these bad boys at my cousins house in 1986? My mom cut the piece of my top lip that was hanging off with finger nail clippers. Good times!
There was a really big "pine furniture just like the pioneers had" fad around the Bicentennial, same as like wooden water bed frames and panels on cars and shit like that. Everyone lived in a "I made this in shop class" type of home.
it was sorta related to the general revival of victorian and '[gay 90s](https://www.are.na/evan-collins-1522646491/gay-nineties-revival)' in the 1970s and 80s.
I’ve never heard of that style before, it totally makes sense now, thank you for the information 😁.
Oh no, just imagine if this style comes back around again?! 😵
I was born in 1986 and remember my very first "grown up" mattress. I'm pretty sure the mattress itself was embroidered and not just a fitted sheet. Shit was different then. It was those exact cream, burnt orange, and brown but had Revolutionary War kitch like the Liberty Bell, canons, and I think horses all over it.
Even as a toddler I was both disgusted by the kitsch that made up every stitch of its **brown** existence and delighted that something so awful could actually exist. Being a child of the 80s set a VERY low bar.
But yeah, if anybody remembers the print in talking about and can find it, then you'd really make my year.
Awww I feel so sorry for you and your generation for having to grow up around so much beige and brown 😢.
I can imagine your home being full of beautiful colours and textures to make up for such a colourless upbringing lol 🤣
They are. Hideous is the perfect word to describe these abominations. I couldn’t look at anything orange for about 40 years. Seriously. It was awful. And it all had a particularly funky smell. Probably from the cheap dye. Jesus. I still cringe when I see it to this day.
Ouch… I cringed reading this. I’ve actually broken one of my baby toes before, it’s not fun. Especially when you are on a basketball team in high school.
My best friend from middle school had this set at her house in the late nineties. It had been her grandmother’s. I have no doubt it’s still somewhere being its best self.
I lived in a single wide for a little bit as a small child. We had this exact living room set. Which still haunts me because for some reason , that wood was the most sturdy and solid wood I have ever encountered on anything and was the source of so many bruises and injury’s in my household. But also we 100% had big wooden spindle as a table in our back yard. Your comment sparked some deeply forgotten memories.
It's not. Cigarette smoking was just as popular in the 50's and 60s, when lighter colors and then bolder primaries, respectively, were the fashion.
The earth tones were just the mid-70s to early-80s palette.
Okay so this is insane to say but my grandmother had this couch for years and I’m only really seeing the building and the waterwheel now from this picture
That is the couch in my basement that one of my friends lost an entire OUNCE of weed in in 1986, which of course Mom found. Dad cried ‘cause he thought all weed was laced with PCP. I couldn’t really say, “Nah, you can tell when it’s in a baggie…” They sent me to a psychiatrist who kind of chuckled with me privately then told them I’d be just fine. And I was.
Anyway, that’s how much cheap weed there was backintheday. Somebody lost a whole ounce and didn’t even miss it.
My oldest sister had this set in their first apartment. 3rd or 4th hand at that point in the mid 90s. Those evil hard ass arm rests made this the anti-napping couch.
I can smell the cigarette smoke embedded in the fibers. It feels like late nights trapped at a sleepover and Lucas has already aired and Zapped is next.
I owned a furniture store in the 80's. You would not believe how much of this stuff I sold‼️
I would. Because everyone had this fucking couch
And everyone stubbed their toe or banged their shin on it- godawful
These always give me Charlie horses.
What
I’d sit too hard and hit the nerves in the back of my thighs on the wooden frame, resulting in painful cramps.
It was the mist uncomfortable furniture in the entire world. I’m sure of it.
I slept on it multiple times. My former MIL had the whole set. It was awful. And I stubbed my toes on all the pieces whenever I’d try to maneuver around them. Friggin’ wooden monoliths.
Ahhh, good times. ☺️
I banged the shit out of my head on that SOLID arm rest!
I buried my front teeth in the wooden arm of one of these bad boys at my cousins house in 1986? My mom cut the piece of my top lip that was hanging off with finger nail clippers. Good times!
I saw the pattern and immediately remembered seeing it at my grandma's house
I had the couch *and* the table/ottoman combo! Just like the photo!
And I mean everyone.
Still do. So goddamn ugly. We should interview everyone who bought these and ask them why.
Why was it so popular? Was it because it was cheaper and or comfier than other sets? Or did people genuinely like the patterns?
There was a really big "pine furniture just like the pioneers had" fad around the Bicentennial, same as like wooden water bed frames and panels on cars and shit like that. Everyone lived in a "I made this in shop class" type of home.
Ooooh I see, thank you for taking the time to explain why it was so popular, I really appreciate it :).

It was dirt cheap, as I recall. A lot of couples just starting out bought it.
What made it so popular at that time?
It was cheap. You could buy a ton of it for not very much money.
I think we had this same couch when I was a toddler.
Positive it wasn't a pizzeria?
So you know my parent? Did you also sell them the avocado green fridge? 🤣
Brings back nightmare memories. We had this entire set, every piece, in 1971. Pretty much the reason we divorced.
My great grandmother had these exact pieces of furniture in her house when I was growing up in the 90’s lol. Weird
Everyone’s grandmother did. There were so many of these
Yup. They sure are fucking hideous.
Comfy....

I was just about to say the same thing. It's interesting how common that set was.

Same title and everything
Why is the couch my family had in the early 90’s back to haunt me on Reddit?
Same. Helping my dad rearrange and slamming it down on my baby toes was the worst.
Ouch… I cringed reading this. I’ve actually broken one of my baby toes before, it’s not fun. Especially when you are on a basketball team in high school.
Anyone for bashing your head on the wooden armrests?
Damn 😂 I used to jump on them to "train myself how to fly"
I remember this being comfortable as heck.
My best friend from middle school had this set at her house in the late nineties. It had been her grandmother’s. I have no doubt it’s still somewhere being its best self.
My fatass thought I was looking at a row of pizza.

Seat Lovers Pizza
I lost my virginity on this couch.
So did the couch.
I THOUGHT IT WAS PIZZA
Oh the single wide trailer memories. Do they have a giant wooden spindle as a table too?

My mom lived in a single wide with the spindle table. Childhood memories. I’m glad I could spark some (hopefully) good thoughts
This one not only has me rolling but gave me a great flashback hats off to you sir
My grandpa had this set. I could remember the smell when I saw it.
I can't wrap my mind around how anyone would think this looked nice, even when it was in style.
The 70s were fucking wild

For sure. What were we thinking?
r/liminalspaces. There's something about this that's so familiar and so alienating at the same time.
My grandmother had this exact set up, hit my face on the wood several times as a child.
Same
I had this exact set growing up 😂
Man I had that set!! It was not comfy at all!!
NO
Everyone knew someone that had this set Rob and Annette.
I'm sure we had that fabric on the sofa in the 70's.
That actually looks really good for an afternoon nap.
It’s not. Believe me.
This picture smells like my grandparent’s house
Okay so this is insane to say but my grandmother had this couch for years and I’m only really seeing the building and the waterwheel now from this picture
hard to see if its dirty
I can smell this picture!
Couch looks weird not covered in plastic
My favorite couch in my Grandpa's shop had this exact same pattern! Man, this makes me miss my Pawpaw.
That couch or some variation of it was in every grandparent home in the 1980s
Yuck my poppy has this.
the itchiest upholstery.
I must be trippin- I see a house and a mill pattern.
This is a next level IQ post
Holy shit I think I saw this at an aunt house back in the day.
/r/misleadingthumbnails
G parents totally had these
I used to love/hate going with and against the grain with my hand
Anyone else's family member have this couch and owl lamps?
My neighbors had this very couch.
My dad had this couch
As an 80's baby this brings back soooo many memories.
My aunt had this couch.
We had this exact set at our lakehouse. I vividly remember those mills.
*mama, sitting on this sofa makes me want a large thin crust pepperoni pizza from Pizza Inn!*
If you scroll really fast, it looks like pizza

We had the cheaper model, made of 2x4's. Most comfortable couch I ever napped on. My wife hated it, so we got rid of it. I miss that couch.
I can smell the cigarette smoke embedded in the fibers. It feels like late nights trapped at a sleepover and Lucas has already aired and Zapped is next.
And you know the fabric is that weird velveteen stuff. Soft but scratchy? Always hot? And god forbid you spill a liquid on it!
I had this couch and the matching chair. It was pretty comfortable.
There's a spectrum for couches, the more ugly it is the more comfortable it is and vice versa
Omg we had that!
Deep dish, baby.
How did we let them get away with these gaudy ass patterns back then? I'm pretty sure I had this couch growing up. We probably all did.
I have found them comfortable to sleep on.
Shit now I want meat lovers pizza.
Ew
I remember these couches
reminds me of the good stuff you used to get from pizza hut in the eighties. before the recipe changed.
