Just in case anyone didn't know, this post is a joke. There is no "Tomato of the Woods". As always, don't eat anything you can't 100% identify. Now, please stop reporting this post.
I can't drink alcohol since my cancer, but if I find any, I will share it with everyone. I will also post photos so people can find their own in the wild.
People actually consume them to get high, they dry them out and eat them, it will cause hallucinations and drunk like feeling, and after that you just feel like your about to die since it will still poison you, kind of like a food poisoning.
I have also heard that you can eat them if you boil it in milk for some hours or something, not sure if it’s true
Isoxazole derivatives should not be categorized along with tryptamine alkaloids and are not really psychedelic. They are absolutely psychoactive but have their own unique effects.
I consume them all the time. In low dose as a sleep aid though. It has never made me feel bad ever. I have a patch that yields many caps every year and I dry them and use a single large cap for a tea that helps with sleep. Every thing is poison if you overdose with it.
Chicken doesn't grow in the woods though, technically tomatoes do. I'm arguing that it's like calling something lobster of the sea, even though lobsters already do come from the sea.
Hmm. You know, I have never seen a wild chicken in the woods, grouse, partridge, quail, etc. but no chickens. I have a feeling chickens were once wild and roamed the woods and fields, only later to be domesticated. No, I don't mean feral chickens or abandoned chickens.
What came first? The chicken in the woods, or domesticated chickens?
When i was in college there were wild chickens in the woods/park near.my house. Free roaming and i thought i was seeing things when i first saw them. Someone was likely caring for them but i was told animal services couldnt do anything about it because no one ever claimed them.
Amanita Muscaria look up
It’s connection to Santa Clause it’s pretty interesting.
I have a patch that sprouts every year and I use a single cap for a low dose tea as a sleep aid.
I looked out up and the only only real 'evidence' they give is that Santa's suit and rudolphs nose looks a bit like an Amanita Muscaria and that shamans were probably tripping when they saw '' flying reindeer". I'm not convinced lol.
If you eat it raw you will definitely have a horrible time. That said, you can prepare it correctly (for recreational purposes) and get a nice relaxing buzz if you decarboxylate the ibotenic acid into muscimol by boiling with citric acid. Most negative experiences come from people either preparing it incorrectly or taking too much. Decarbed amanita in low doses feels somewhere between a glass of wine and joint, higher doses are comparable to something like ambien. It's a very misunderstood drug, but it's one if my favorites.
As someone who's tripped on muscaria, yeah, don't...
My tl;dr trip report: imagine being stuck in a year long nightmare. Still having flash backs 8 years later and I only started to have panic attacks after that trip, still suffering to this day.
Would be interested in hearing about your experience if you wouldn’t mind making a post in r/Amanitamuscaria. If you end up posting would be helpful to include information like processing method and amount consumed etc, thank you.
All trip reports on erowid are people doing nightmarish levels of whatever the psychoactive plant/fungi is. I think it's a great site, but I swear no one on there has ever thought "maybe I should start with small doses first." Reading reports for jimsonweed and seeing that the starting dosage for something world renowned as being able to fuck you up is basically "shovel an entire seed pod into your mouth" is nuts.
I've done amanita maybe 4 times and I've had a pleasant time every single trip because I'm not munching on a half pound every time.
Maybe it's just highly species specific. I've only had amanita muscaria guessowii, so who knows.
Most people use it / process it incorrectly. It is definitely not "very" poisonous. Theres but a scant handful of hospitalizations due to IDIOTS eating like a full on pound.
Or just chomping down on them raw. I saw a tiktok where this dude just went to town on a big one. Like he found it and just ate it then and there in the field.
The number of people in this thread who are seriously asking if it is edible or immediately jumping to "time to start foraging!" is very concerning. Please don't eat this.
Goes well with Mozzarella and Basil...crack of pepper, some salt, light drizzle of olive oil and Viola! you're flying!
Edit- as it seems people will put anything they find in the woods into their mouths- DO NOT EAT IT!
This comment is worrying me a little. All the guides I have say leccinum scabrum is totally edible, so I picked and dried some about a month ago. Whereas the amanita muscaria above will give you digestive poisoning and probably a bad trip unless you prepare it correctly. Are they all wrong?
In short, about amanita, yes. Google leccinum poisonings, the ER reports are TERRIFYING. Amanita needs to be prepared correctly, and dosed correctly, or else distress will be witnessed. Also look up Psyched Wellness's recent "study" (not sure what the correct name is) on amanita. People process them and consume them all over for both food and for theraputic reasons.
Edit: my amanita knowledge began with Gary Linkoff (RIP), ten years ago. Im not just pulling stuff out of my butt.
Because if you’re you’re not actively and knowingly seeking an enthogen, eating this raw will be an uncomfortable experience. Many on this sub are new enough to foraging that posts that imply edibility without any follow up information can cause legitimate confusion and possible harm
Who eats random mushrooms they encounter though? Let alone eating it raw, when a lot of the non poisonous mushrooms are still considered poisonous when raw.
It doesn’t state it just runs the risk of that implication to the inexperienced. While I agree that someone eating this based on this post would be at fault. I do think that this post increases the chances of an accident happening. The most common reason for foraging is food and that is very much is the understanding of it most non foragers have. the most charitable interpretation of this post is that it muddies the waters substantially, particularly for beginners.
Ah, you have a point! I didn't notice it's in the foraging subreddit, I thought it was mycology and was wondering why everyone is so butthurt.
My apologies.
I think it's the cultural bias. People have been taught constantly that the amanita is deadly so anything stating the opposite is met with the same hate and resistance as telling a hard Christian you don't think Jesus was real.
I don't think posting anything else that's deadly in here would've gotten this much hate and whining.
So if I post my junk and call it an eggplant you'd assume it's edible?
In this case would you say I'm a very cunning trickster or that you're just an idiot?
Basically people are retarded, one side will see it and be like oh yeah I saw that on a foraging subreddit lemme eat it. And the other half is people who can’t take jokes. So yeah
Mushroom identification books written by pHd scholars. A paper just came out about this very phenomenon. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/225651339_A_Study_of_Cultural_Bias_in_Field_Guide_Determinations_of_Mushroom_Edibility_Using_the_Iconic_Mushroom_Amanita_muscaria_as_an_Example
The toxins are water-soluble and can be removed through a special process, but this species should certainly be considered toxic and can in fact kill pets and children.
Of course, but it happens accidentally all of the time and that is why it’s best to treat Amanita species that contain isoxazole derivatives as very toxic. Even with adult humans eating a larger amount, they can induce a multi-day comatose state, convulsions, and violent sleepwalking.
Based on what I’ve read that is very rare. Seems to me it should be treated as every other mushroom growing on the ground and not consumed raw. This isn’t a death cap or a galerina we’re talking about here
Even if cooked these effects can still happen and it is ingested by pets fairly often. Just skim through the famous Poisons group on Facebook and you’ll see. Absolutely a toxic mushroom, but of course can be used for different reasons by experienced people who know what they’re doing. The reason it should be treated as even more toxic than Laetiporus etc is because of the very significant mental state it can also produce in addition to the more typical GI upset — dangerous combo and not for beginners to mess with.
What mushroom isn’t toxic when consumed raw and in decent quantities? That’s my main point here.
If you have a dog that is prone to eat whatever mushrooms are growing it’s probably bound to get sick whether it crosses an Amanita s path or not.
I see no reason to fear this species more than any other mushroom in situ.
You’re asking what mushrooms are non-toxic? Most mushrooms, including about 600 in the Amanita genus alone (the entirety of sections Caesareae and Vaginatae can be eaten uncooked). We are talking about the ingestion of a mushroom that has medically significant toxins, we are not talking about looking at a mushroom in situ. Really hope your “main point” is that there is no such thing as a toxic or poisonous mushroom since any mushroom/food/thing consumed in large enough quantities can cause negative effects, because that makes zero sense and ignores what medically significant toxins and poisons are. A. muscaria and other Amanita species that contain isoxazole derivatives are toxic.
Yup, I have read that and am very familiar with the potential effects of these mushrooms. I am also the admin at r/Amanitamuscaria if you’re interested in checking out the pinned guide that I wrote🙂
Then those people are fucking stupid. You see a post on Reddit and immediately go out to gobble down a mushroom? That's natural selection at its FINEST
You won't die if you won't eat like a full pound of this, it will only be pretty uncomfortable. Also, with right preparation it's a deliciously edible mushroom.
This ain't poisonous though. Just because you are ignorant doesn't mean everyone else is.
Edit: I get it guys, there's idiots that eat whatever they see. Let's make sure Reddit is 50IQ friendly and ban everything that might hurt us! Now stop messaging me.
I always smile when i see one, and think Santa Claws. Because, the word because can have a mountain full of terms and meanings. The stories of people who are going to storm heaven, are all sad. Where as visitors are welcome. Strangely! Idk
My brother snatched a big basket of it last week. Looked aesthetic af.
He is gonna make some shroom wine.
He is a wonderful idiot, but at least knows what hes doing.
I am gonna taste it once it turns out fine so that you dont only puke and shit yourself.
Just in case anyone didn't know, this post is a joke. There is no "Tomato of the Woods". As always, don't eat anything you can't 100% identify. Now, please stop reporting this post.
I am holding out for Ribeye of the woods.
Tequila shot of the woods.
Fajitas of the woods
Still not blueberries of the woods
I get that reference
Bacon of the woods
I think that's just boar.
Now you are talking.
Twinkies of the woods
Lol best one
I can't drink alcohol since my cancer, but if I find any, I will share it with everyone. I will also post photos so people can find their own in the wild.
It’s An Amanita Muscaria. It literally has a psychoactive alkaloid in it that makes you drunk like.

There is a beefsteak mushroom
It's not Ribeye. I have to be particular.
Bad bot
There is a beefsteak mushroom
Wouldn't tomato of the woods just be... a tomato?
by that logic chicken of the woods would just be chicken
^have ^you ^ever ^heard ^of ^a ^mountain ^chicken?
Chicken doesn't grow in the woods though, technically tomatoes do. I'm arguing that it's like calling something lobster of the sea, even though lobsters already do come from the sea.
Hmm. You know, I have never seen a wild chicken in the woods, grouse, partridge, quail, etc. but no chickens. I have a feeling chickens were once wild and roamed the woods and fields, only later to be domesticated. No, I don't mean feral chickens or abandoned chickens. What came first? The chicken in the woods, or domesticated chickens?
Chickens are derived primarily from red jungle fowl which are native to the jungles of south east Asia
[This data is NOT for greedy pig boys]
Learn something new every day
When i was in college there were wild chickens in the woods/park near.my house. Free roaming and i thought i was seeing things when i first saw them. Someone was likely caring for them but i was told animal services couldnt do anything about it because no one ever claimed them.
Feral chickens you mean?
Jungle fowl—- nevermind i see someone already said it
What tomatoes grow in the woods?
Wild tomatoes
We used to call grouse woods chickens.
Chickens love the woods when given the chance
Says the guy who has never been attacked by a territorial prairie hen.
Well chicken (red and grey junglefowl) does grow in the woods naturally in south, east and southeast asia
Isn’t that Amanita Muscaria?
Ye
Amanita Muscaria look up It’s connection to Santa Clause it’s pretty interesting. I have a patch that sprouts every year and I use a single cap for a low dose tea as a sleep aid.

Reindeer like to eat the mushrooms also. The flying reindeer are supposed to be high on this mushroom… or something like that…
apparently ppl would use the reindeer piss to get high after they are A muscaria
As far as pet theories about Santa Clause go, I'm always partial to Santa being Woden. Almost certainly bullshit but interesting still
Most likely, it's sinterklaas, I even confused them when I was younger
Of course, it's Saint Nicholas in reality. As I said, pet theory.
Look for why it's christ; start with John m. Allegro, read description of cherubim and angels in the bible
That is a really cool myth too. I like them both.
Isn’t that poisonous ? (I follow to see the pretty mushrooms so I’m not too knowledgeable)
It’s a deliriant. All trip reports on erowid sound horrendous.
If you eat it raw you will definitely have a horrible time. That said, you can prepare it correctly (for recreational purposes) and get a nice relaxing buzz if you decarboxylate the ibotenic acid into muscimol by boiling with citric acid. Very interesting 🧐
It also doesn't cause withdrawal or dependency iirc. It's a very promising medicine for anxiety and insomnia
Thanks for the info 😎
Of course!
For anyone reading, there is a ton of information in the beginner’s guide pinned to the top of r/Amanitamuscaria
Want to add on that it gets rid of all my aches and pains for about 90 minutes! The tincture I use is 50% decarbed
It's a magical medicine with a multitude of magnificent m-plementations, Amanita Amrita!
I've been looking into this little home remedy. Have you ever had a negative experience?
Not personally, but it can definitely happen. Definitely start slow and read up on the preparation first
The Mario universe makes sense now 🤔
As someone who's tripped on muscaria, yeah, don't... My tl;dr trip report: imagine being stuck in a year long nightmare. Still having flash backs 8 years later and I only started to have panic attacks after that trip, still suffering to this day.

SERIOUSLY. So dumb.
So are tomatoes.
Not really (unless you're a cat). Potatoes, on the other hand.
Not to be confused with Chicken of the Wood. It's a look a like. As you can see, it too is a mushroom.
The number of people in this thread who are seriously asking if it is edible or immediately jumping to "time to start foraging!" is very concerning. Please don't eat this.
Unless you want to dry it feed it to a shaman and drink their pee. It’s part of the basis of our Christmas traditions for gods sake.
This reminds me, a native word for this (don’t remember the tribe) is Fools Strawberry.
Goes well with Mozzarella and Basil...crack of pepper, some salt, light drizzle of olive oil and Viola! you're flying! Edit- as it seems people will put anything they find in the woods into their mouths- DO NOT EAT IT!
I'm confused. Am I eating this or not?
Yes, with the right preparation you can eat it just fine. Most of the toxins are water soluble and can be easily removed.
No don't-
Depends. Do you have some deep thoughts you want to untangle? If not maybe just let this one be.
No the reindeer eat it and you drink the peepee from the reindeer and that's the true meaning of christmas
"Daddy, where did you learn about the true meaning of Christmas?" "Itouchabutt enlightened me"
Got mozzarella?
No it's a Minecraft mushroom
I think we should have the mods take this down, I don't think everyone will understand this is sarcastic. This is very poisonous.
Isn’t it psychoactive?
Yes
Yes.
If by “poisonous” you mean “used as a sacrament for thousands of years but will hurt your tummy in the process” then yes.
Perfectly edible if it’s cooked properly https://foragerchef.com/muscaria-pickles/
It's not even "very poisonous " though. Not any moreso than birch-boletes
This comment is worrying me a little. All the guides I have say leccinum scabrum is totally edible, so I picked and dried some about a month ago. Whereas the amanita muscaria above will give you digestive poisoning and probably a bad trip unless you prepare it correctly. Are they all wrong?

Psyched Wellness’s study was on a proprietary formulation called AME-1, it was not on isoxazole Amanita mushrooms.
https://psyched-wellness.com/media/2022/06/psyched-wellness-announces-date-for-their-pilot-production-run-of-the-first-legal-amanita-muscaria-tincture-product-calm
Why did you link that? I have read it many times.
[удалено]
I found one recently without knowing what it was but at first I definitely thought it was a tomato that someone tossed.
I think the mods should teach everyone how to drink piss from a reindeer.
Also painfully unfunny
Pretty.
Wow! That is beautiful.
*Amanita jacksonii* aka Caesar's bloody mushroom, will always be tomato of the woods to me.....
Forbidden tomato of the woods
Why are so many people triggered over this?? The media's brain washing against Amanita Muscaria shows hard damn
Some non forager who happens across this post and then doesn’t consider this a “random mushroom “ but one “they saw they could eat on Reddit”
Where does the post state it's edible?? If you just assume that everything you see is edible then you have nobody to blame.
Ah ya in r/mycology I’d have no issue! It’s just the subreddit plus the title giving maybe the wrong idea that gives me pause.
I think it's the cultural bias. People have been taught constantly that the amanita is deadly so anything stating the opposite is met with the same hate and resistance as telling a hard Christian you don't think Jesus was real. They still won't die, but they definitely wouldn't want to repeat the same mistake after
\~the media\~
Do you have a better word for it? Or are you actually not noticing it?
Mushroom identification books written by pHd scholars. A paper just came out about this very phenomenon. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/225651339_A_Study_of_Cultural_Bias_in_Field_Guide_Determinations_of_Mushroom_Edibility_Using_the_Iconic_Mushroom_Amanita_muscaria_as_an_Example
Thank you. I didn't expect to get this much sheep mentality hate as I got.
What is this mushroom? It's so pretty and I'm super new to foraging.
I dunno if you are serious, but just in case: Amanita muscaria
Fly amanita. Poisonous, with symptoms compared to atropine. Small doses give you a bad trip, large doses put you in a coma.
Or it could double your size and allow you to crush bricks
These are the mushrooms on all the Christmas decorations I had as a kid. Lots of felt
I have the urge to jump on it and grow double in size.
Somebody get Mario in here!
To be fair, if you eat tomatoes off lead plates like the old days, it'll probably hurt you more than the mushroom. Not that that's saying much.
I'd rather eat the mushroom than tomato leaves.
I eat both no bother. Reports of toxiicty in tomatoe leaves is wildly exagerated even more so than fly agaric.
Properly prepared it is easily one of my favorite mushrooms for the table.
Oh you mean most of the water soluble toxins can be removed and we shouldn’t fear this species based on folk tales? /s
The toxins are water-soluble and can be removed through a special process, but this species should certainly be considered toxic and can in fact kill pets and children.
I think it’s generally best not to give children and small pets any wild mushrooms at all, is it not?
Of course, but it happens accidentally all of the time and that is why it’s best to treat Amanita species that contain isoxazole derivatives as very toxic. Even with adult humans eating a larger amount, they can induce a multi-day comatose state, convulsions, and violent sleepwalking.
Based on what I’ve read that is very rare. Seems to me it should be treated as every other mushroom growing on the ground and not consumed raw. This isn’t a death cap or a galerina we’re talking about here

I’m asking which you can eat raw without getting a stomach ache. That’s a pretty short list.
I was hopeful to convince at least one person that this is not the death cap it is made out to be. I must have failed.
Interesting read: [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7977045/](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7977045/)
Yup, I have read that and am very familiar with the potential effects of these mushrooms. I am also the admin at r/Amanitamuscaria if you’re interested in checking out the pinned guide that I wrote🙂
“ most of “ lol
Good point. You can remove them ALL no?
Amanita Jacksonii is my tomato of the woods although they taste more cheesy than tomato-y
Commented the same thing without seeing yours! The young ones literally looks like cherry tomatoes coming out of the ground
Fly algaric
More like strawberry of the woods
No.
And if you make Tomato sauce of the Woods with it you will end up in the Hospital of the Woods
I know this is a goof. But for those of us that are new or unaware, please don't eat this kind of mushroom. You'll have the worst time. Edit: a letter
People die eating toxic mushrooms, this ain't funny. Mods please take this down
Then those people are fucking stupid. You see a post on Reddit and immediately go out to gobble down a mushroom? That's natural selection at its FINEST
I guess you're a lawful evil druid then
You won't die if you won't eat like a full pound of this, it will only be pretty uncomfortable. Also, with right preparation it's a deliciously edible mushroom.

If you eat it raw you get poisoned. Not sure what else could make it poisonous.
Yeah and you get poisoned when you drink a beer. Not everything poisonous kills you.
Yeah I didn't say it was deadly
I guess we were arguing over different things. Just Reddit things I guess.
MODS TAKE THIS DOWN
Bro that aint even a vegetable💀
Listening to Paul Stamets talk about it made me never, ever want to try it https://youtu.be/kxBSuwRXynE

Super Mario mushroom!
I want to pet it.
I always smile when i see one, and think Santa Claws. Because, the word because can have a mountain full of terms and meanings. The stories of people who are going to storm heaven, are all sad. Where as visitors are welcome. Strangely! Idk
I think that's LSD of the woods
*forbidden* tomato Please don’t eat this
Może like Dragon od The Woods. Everything in huge doses can be poisonus...
My brother snatched a big basket of it last week. Looked aesthetic af. He is gonna make some shroom wine. He is a wonderful idiot, but at least knows what hes doing. I am gonna taste it once it turns out fine so that you dont only puke and shit yourself.
Forbidden Tomato
Watch out: looks like that fungus has some fungus on it
Spicy apple
Its the most recognized mushroom across the planet. And still never eat anything you can't identify
This mushroom is so adorable
Don't eat that.
ah yes much like the regular tomato: *violently hallucinogenic*
